NaNbO3 Nanorods: Photopiezocatalysts for Elevated Bacterial Disinfection and Wastewater Treatment

Application of catalytic technology based on the piezoelectric effect in wastewater purification

The demands of human life and industrial activities result in a significant influx of toxic contaminants into aquatic ecosystems. In particular, organic pollutants such as antibiotics and dye molecules, bacteria, and heavy metal ions are represented, posing a severe risk to the health and continued existence of living organisms. The method of removing pollutants from water bodies by utilizing the principle of the piezoelectric effect in combination with chemical catalytic processes is superior to other wastewater purification technologies because it can collect water energy, mechanical energy, etc. to achieve cleanliness and high removal efficiency. Herein, we briefly introduced the piezoelectric mechanisms and then reviewed the latest advances in the design and synthesis of piezoelectric materials, followed by a summary of applications based on the principle of piezoelectric effect to degrade pollutants in water for wastewater purification. Moreover, water purification technologies incorporating the piezoelectric effect, including piezoelectric effect-assisted membrane filtration, activation of persulfate, and battery electrocatalysis are elaborated. Finally, future challenges and research directions for the piezoelectric effect are proposed.

Enhanced piezocatalytic and piezo-photocatalytic dye degradation via S-scheme mechanism with photodeposited nickel oxide nanoparticles on PbBiO2Br nanosheets

The fabrication of an S-scheme heterojunction demonstrates as an efficient strategy for achieving efficient charge separation and enhancing catalytic activity of piezocatalysts. In this study, a new S-scheme heterojunction was fabricated on the PbBiO2Br surface through the photo-deposition of NiO nanoparticles. It was then employed in the piezoelectric catalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). The results demonstrate that the NiO/PbBiO2Br composite exhibits efficient performance in piezocatalytic RhB degradation. The optimal sample is the NiO/PbBiO2Br synthesized after 2 h of irradiation, achieving a RhB degradation rate of 3.11 h-1, which is 12.4 times higher than that of pure PbBiO2Br. Simultaneous exposure to visible light and ultrasound further increases in the RhB degradation rate, reaching 4.60 h-1, highlighting the synergistic effect of light and piezoelectricity in the NiO/PbBiO2Br composite. A comprehensive exploration of the charge migration mechanism at the NiO/PbBiO2Br heterojunction was undertaken through electrochemical analyses, theoretical calculations, and in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The outcomes reveal that p-type semiconductor NiO and n-type semiconductor PbBiO2Br possess matching band structures, establishing an S-scheme heterojunction structure at their interface. Under the combined effects of band bending, interface electric fields, and Coulomb attraction, electrons and holes migrate and accumulate on the conduction band of PbBiO2Br and valence band of NiO, respectively, thereby achieving effective spatial separation of charge carriers. The catalyst's synergistic photo-piezoelectric catalysis effect can be ascribed to its role in promoting the generation and separation of charge carriers under both light irradiation and the piezoelectric field. The results of this investigation offer valuable insights into the development and production of catalytic materials that exhibit outstanding performance through the synergy of piezocatalysis and photocatalysis.

A 2D nanoflower-like ordered mesoporous Bi12ZnO20 catalyst with excellent photocatalytic antibacterial properties

The ordered mesoporous ZnO was successfully synthesized using the template method in this article, and Bi ions were etched into ZnO to form two-dimensional nanoflower structures of Bi12ZnO20 with NA3SSA as a guiding agent. The crystal structure, morphology, and optical properties of the photocatalyst were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometer(EDS), and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectrum (UV-vis DRS). Under illumination conditions, the obtained materials exhibited excellent bactericidal ability against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as effective inhibition against fungi. Among them, the bactericidal effect of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found to be the most rapid, achieving a sterilization rate of 100% within 30 min of light irradiation. Even after three cycles of antibacterial activity testing, the Bi12ZnO20 material still demonstrated good photocatalytic performance. The nanoflower-shaped materials provide an enhanced fluid adsorption capacity and more active centers for photocatalytic reactions while also improving light absorption capacity, photogenerated electron-hole separation efficiency, and electron transport efficiency. The cytotoxicity assessment of Bi12ZnO20 revealed no significant toxic effects. Therefore, this study presents a nanoflower-shaped material with highly efficient photocatalytic antibacterial properties for applications in production and daily life; it holds significant importance in eliminating harmful bacteria and plays a crucial role in environmental protection.

IMPORTANCE

The flower-shaped photocatalytic material Bi12ZnO20, consisting of nanoparticles, was successfully synthesized in this study. Rigorous antibacterial experiments were conducted on various fungi using the material, yielding excellent results. Furthermore, the application of this material for antibacterial treatment of livestock and poultry manure sewage in real-life scenarios demonstrated remarkable efficacy.

Interconnected Periodic Macroporous NaNbO3 for High-Efficiency Solar-Driven Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Highly ordered periodic macroporous structures have been extensively utilized to significantly enhance the photocatalytic activity. However, constructing 3D interconnected ordered porous ternary nanostructures with highly crystalline frameworks remains a formidable challenge. Here, we introduce the design and fabrication of 3D interconnected periodic macroporous NaNbO3 (PM NaNbO3) to effectively increase the density of surface-active sites and optimize the photogenerated carrier-transfer efficiency. By incorporating Pt as a cocatalyst, PM NaNbO3 exhibits an exceptional photocatalytic hydrogen generation rate of 10.04 mmol h-1 g-1, which is approximately six and five times higher than those of calcined NaNbO3 (C-NaNbO3) and hydrothermal NaNbO3 (H-NaNbO3), respectively. This outstanding performance can be attributed to the synergistic effects arising from its well-interconnected pore architecture, large surface area, enhanced light absorption capability, and improved charge carrier separation and transport efficiency. The findings presented in this study demonstrate an innovative approach toward designing hierarchically periodic macroporous materials for solar-driven hydrogen production.

Borophene: a piezocatalyst for water remediation

Borophene is an emerging two-dimensional material exhibiting exceptional piezocatalytic activity under the influence of ultrasonic vibrations, as exemplified herein by the decomposition of highly stable organic dyes in water. After 6 minutes of exposure, borophene sheets converted up to 92 percent of a mixture of dye molecules at room temperature.

Photocatalytic activity in graded off-valent cations substituted NaNbO3

This study investigates the impact of off-valent doping on the photocatalytic properties of NaNbO3 concerning the degradation of Methylene Blue. Compositions with x values of 0.00 (representing pure NaNbO3, denoted as NBO) and 0.05 within the material system Na1-xAxNbO3 (where A is K1+, Ba2+, La3+, abbreviated as K-NBO, Ba-NBO, and La-NBO respectively) were synthesized using the conventional solid-state reaction method. The UV-visible analysis revealed a decrease in the band gap for samples K-NBO and Ba-NBO, while an increase was observed for sample La-NBO. Raman modes of lower wave numbers merged and shifted towards the higher wave number side. The determination of valence band edge and conduction band edge involved computational analysis based on XPS survey scans, and the band gap energy values were derived from UV-Visible spectroscopy results. Examining the band diagram of the samples (NBO, K-NBO, Ba-NBO, and La-NBO) in conjunction with the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels of MB dye provided insights into potential degradation mechanisms. Photocatalytic dye degradation experiments for Methylene Blue demonstrated that doping increased the degradation efficiency of samples K-NBO, Ba-NBO, and La-NBO compared to NBO. Among all NaNbO3 based prepared samples, Ba-NBO exhibited the highest degradation efficiency of 96%, however slightly less than the reference sample P25 TiO2.

Macroscopic Spontaneous Piezopolarization and Oxygen-Vacancy Coupled Robust NaNbO3/FeOOH Heterojunction for Pharmaceutical Drug Degradation and O2 Evolution: Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study

Prompt recombination of photoproduced charges in bulk and surface of a photocatalyst significantly impedes catalytic efficiency. To address these challenges, FeOOH nanorods (NRs) anchored NaNbO3 (NNO) piezoelectric microcubes (MCs) have been fabricated for ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation and oxygen evolution through water splitting by coupling macroscopic spontaneous piezoelectric polarization and a built-in electric field. The local electric field induced by surface oxygen vacancies (Ovs) and orientation of FeOOH NRs over NNO MCs afford the polarization electric field a significant boost, driving the quick separation/migration of charge carriers from bulk to the surface. The polarized NNO/FeOOH composite with ample Ovs demonstrates an outstanding piezophotocatalytic CIP degradation of 93% in 1 h, higher than pristine materials (NNO and FeOOH), and a high O2 evolution rate of 1155 μmol h-1. The effect of piezoelectric polarization on the catalytic activity is supplemented by theoretical simulations. This work offers an avenue for selective pollutant remediation and water splitting through the rational design of piezoelectric polarization-mediated heterostructure systems with surface Ovs.

Defective ReS2 Triggers High Intrinsic Piezoelectricity for Piezo-Photocatalytic Efficient Sterilization

Rhenium disulfide (ReS2) is a promising piezoelectric catalyst due to its excellent electron transfer ability and abundant unsaturated sites. The 1T' phase structure leads to the evolution of ReS2 into a centrosymmetric spatial structure, which restricts its application in piezoelectric catalysis. Herein, we propose a controllable defect engineering strategy to trigger the piezoelectric response of ReS2. The introduction of vacancy defects disrupts the initial centrosymmetric structure, which breaks the piezoelectric polarization bond and generates piezoelectric properties. By using transmission electron microscopy, we characterized it at the atomic scale and determined that vacancy defects contribute to an excellent piezoelectric property through first-principles calculations. Notably, the piezoelectric coefficient of the catalyst with 40 s-etching (ReS2@C-40) is 23.07 pm/V, an order of magnitude greater than other transition metal dichalcogenides. It demonstrated the feasibility of optimizing piezoelectric properties by increasing the conformational asymmetry. Based on its remarkable piezoelectric activity, ReS2@C-40 exhibits highly efficient piezo-photocatalytic synergistic sterilization performance with 99.99% eradication of Escherichia coli and 96.67% of Staphylococcus aureus within 30 min. This pioneering research on the coupling effect of ReS2 in piezoelectric catalysis and photocatalysis provides ideas for the development of piezo-photocatalysts and efficient water purification technologies.

New insight on interfacial charge transfer at graphitic carbon nitride/sodium niobate heterojunction under piezoelectric effect for the generation of reactive oxygen species

Piezocatalytic removal of metronidazole (MET) using graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4, GCN)/sodium niobate (NaNbO3) heterojunction was investigated under ultrasonication. Herein, optimized GCN(50)/NaNbO3 heterojunction achieved 87.2% MET removal within 160 min (k = 0.0138 min-1). A new pathway for the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) via GCN(50)/NaNbO3 piezocatalytic heterojunction was identified. The type-II heterojunction formulated using optimized GCN(50)/NaNbO3 was found to generate hydroxyl radical (.OH); however, it was thermodynamically not feasible. The main reasons are; (i) piezopotential generated converted type-II to S-scheme heterojunction and resulted in the participation of high oxidizing potential holes in valence band (VB) of NaNbO3, and (ii) formation of depletion region at the GCN-water interface and subsequent improvement in the redox potential of holes, and (iii) piezopotential generated at NaNbO3 provided bias to GCN and established a piezo-electrocatalytic system. The higher screening of piezopotential in presence of external ions was found to reduce the generation of .OH. Overall, self-powered NaNbO3 has great ability to improve interfacial charge transfer at GCN(50)/NaNbO3 to form ROS.

Piezocatalytic Techniques in Environmental Remediation

As a consequence of rapid industrialization throughout the world, various environmental pollutants have begun to accumulate in water, air, and soil. This endangers the ecological environment of the earth, and environmental remediation has become an immediate priority. Among various environmental remediation techniques, piezocatalytic techniques, which uniquely take advantage of the piezoelectric effect, have attracted much attention. Piezoelectric effects allow pollutant degradation directly, while also enhancing photocatalysis by reducing the recombination of photogenerated carriers. In this Review, we provide a comprehensive summary of recent developments in piezocatalytic techniques for environmental remediation. The origin of the piezoelectric effect as well as classification of piezoelectric materials and their application in environmental remediation are systematically summarized. We also analyze the potential underlying mechanisms. Finally, urgent problems and the future development of piezocatalytic techniques are discussed.
