Cellulose Acetate-Cellulose Nanowhisker Nanocomposite Immobilized with a DCDHF-Hydrazone Chromophore toward a Smart Test Strip for Colorimetric Detection of Diethyl Chlorophosphate as a Nerve Agent Mimic

Chromogenic Detection of the Organophosphorus Nerve Agent Simulant DCP Mediated by Rhodium(II,II) Paddlewheel Complexes

Organophosphorus nerve agents (OPNAs) pose a great threat to humanity. Possessing extreme toxicity, rapid lethality, and an unassuming appearance, these chemical warfare agents must be quickly and selectively identified so that treatment can be administered to those affected. Chromogenic detection is the most convenient form of OPNA detection, but current methods suffer from false positives. Here, nitrogenous base adducts of dirhodium(II,II) acetate were synthesized and used as chromogenic detectors of diethyl chlorophosphate (DCP), an OPNA simulant. UV-vis spectrophotometry was used to evaluate the sensitivity and selectivity of the complexes in the detection of DCP. Visual limits of detection (LOD) for DCP were as low as 1.5 mM DCP, while UV-vis-based LODs were as low as 0.113 μM. The dirhodium(II,II) complexes were also tested with several potential interferents, none of which produced a visual color change that could be mistaken for OPNA response. Ultimately, the Rh2(OAc)4(1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene)2 complex showed the best combination of detection capability and interferent resistance. These results, when taken together, show that dirhodium(II,II) paddlewheel complexes with nitrogenous base adducts can produce instant, selective, and sensitive detection of DCP. It is our aim to further explore and apply this new motif to produce even more capable OPNA sensors.

Cellulose acetate/MOF film-based colorimetric ammonia sensor for non-destructive remote monitoring of meat product spoilage

Herein, we designed an on-site and portable colorimetric assay using cellulose acetate polymeric films incorporated with HKUST-1 metal-organic framework while immersed in a solution of methyl red and brilliant cresyl blue organic dyes as an indicator for monitoring ammonia levels. Ammonia serves as a significant biomarker of food spoilage which falls under the category of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The designed colorimetric solid-state sensor was comprehensively characterized using FE-SEM, EDS-mapping, XRD, FTIR, and contact angle analyses. The results confirmed the superior stability, water permeability, good crystallinity and desirable morphology of the prepared sensor platform. Additionally, customized smartphone was developed and applied for online signaling and colorimetric analysis. The findings demonstrated two linear ranges: 1-100 ppb and 0.1-1340 ppm with a detection limit of 0.02 ppm. The solid-state sensor exhibited high selectivity in the presence of other VOCs such as methanol, ethanol, acetone, 2-propanol, toluene, humidity, and hexane. It displayed acceptable repeatability in both inter-day (RSD = 3.38 %) and intraday (RSD = 3.86 %), long-term stability over 4 days as well as reusability over 3 cycles. We successfully applied this sensing platform for ammonia monitoring in spoiled meat foods including veal, fish and chicken. The results indicated favorable percentage recovery and repeatability, confirming the feasibility and potential applicability of this intelligent packaging system for monitoring freshness. The platform allows for real-time monitoring and data analysis via smartphone-based online signaling, providing a convenient and effective method for ensuring food quality.

Carbon dots using a household cleaning liquid as a dopant for iron detection in hydroponic systems

Iron (Fe) is a required micronutrient in plants for the production of chlorophyll and transport of oxygen. A commonly used surrogate for measuring nutrient levels is the measurement of electrical conductivity or total dissolved solids, but this technique is not selective towards any particular dissolved ion. In this study, using a conventional microwave, fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) are produced from glucose and a household cleaning product and applied towards monitoring dissolved ferric iron levels in hydroponic systems through fluorescent quenching. The produced particles have an average size of 3.19 ± 0.76 nm with a relatively high degree of oxygen surface groups. When using an excitation of 405 nm, a broad emission peak is centered at approximately 500 nm. A limit-of-detection of 0.196 ± 0.067 ppm (3.51 ± 1.21 μM) with minimal interference from common heavy metal quenchers and ions found in hydroponic systems was determined. Butterhead lettuce was grown while discretely monitoring iron levels via the CDs for three separate weeks of growth. The CDs displayed a non-significant difference (p > 0.05) in performance when compared to a standard method. These results along with a simple and relatively low-cost production method make the CDs in this study a promising tool for monitoring iron levels in hydroponic systems.

Novel Hydrazone Chromophore Sensor for Metallochromic Determination of Cadmium Ions

For the detection of Cd(II) in aquatic media, a novel dicyanomethylene dihydrofuran hydrazone(DCDHFH)-based colorimetric chemosensor was developed. DCDHFH was prepared by an azo-coupling process involving the diazonium chloride of 2, 4-dichloroaniline and a dicyanomethylene dihydrofuran heterocyclic moiety bearing an active methyl group. The DCDHFH chromophore showed strong solvatochromism depending on solvent polarity due to electronic delocalization. The pH sensory effects of the DCDHFH chromophore were also explored. DCDHFH could be used to identify Cd(II) in the presence of other competitive metals, as indicated by variations in color and absorbance spectra. In the presence of cadmium ions, the synthesized DCDHFH probe with hydrazone recognition moiety exhibited a significant sensitivity and selectivity to cadmium ions at the ppm concentration level (10–250 ppm). A DCDHFH-immobilized paper test strip was also prepared and effectively used for the detection of cadmium in aqueous media at various concentrations. According to CIE Lab’s criteria, colorimetric strength (K/S), and the UV–Vis absorbance spectra, the cadmium detection abilities of the DCDHFH-immobilized paper strips were evaluated. The optimal pH range for the determination of Cd(II) was monitored in the area of 5.5–6.3, with a fast chromogenic change from yellow to red relying on the Cd(II) concentration. The deposition of dicyanomethylene dihydrofuran hydrazone onto the paper strip’s surface was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
