Abstract
This study describes the development of a fast and cost-effective method for the detection and removal of Hg2+ ions from aqueous media, consisting of hydrogels incorporating chelating agents and a rhodamine derivative (to afford a qualitative evaluation of the heavy metal entrapment inside the 3D polymeric matrix). These hydrogels, designed for the simultaneous detection and entrapment of mercury, were obtained through the photopolymerization of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPSA) and N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP), utilizing N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as crosslinker, in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a rhodamine B derivative, and one of the following chelating agents: phytic acid, 1,3-diamino-2-hydroxypropane-tetraacetic acid, triethylenetetramine-hexaacetic acid, or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt. The rhodamine derivative had a dual purpose in this study: firstly, it was incorporated into the hydrogel to allow the qualitative evaluation of mercury entrapment through its fluorogenic switch-off abilities when sensing Hg2+ ions; secondly, it was used to quantitatively evaluate the level of residual mercury from the decontaminated aqueous solutions, via the UV-Vis technique. The ICP-MS analysis of the hydrogels also confirmed the successful entrapment of mercury inside the hydrogels and a good correlation with the UV-Vis method.

Abstract
By considering the importance of water and its purity, herein, a powerful adsorbent has been developed for the adsorption of two toxic contaminants that commonly exist in water, viz., divalent mercury and hexavalent chromium. The efficient adsorbent, CNTs-PLA-Pd, was prepared by covalent grafting polylactic acid to carbon nanotubes and subsequent deposition of palladium nanoparticles. The CNTs-PLA-Pd could adsorb Hg(II), and Cr(VI) entirely exists in water. The adsorption rate for Hg(II) and Cr(VI) was rapid at initial stage, followed by gradual decrease, and attained the equilibrium. The Hg(II) and Cr(VI) adsorption was perceived within 50 min and 80 min, respectively with CNTs-PLA-Pd,. Further, experimental data for Hg(II) and Cr(VI) adsorption was analyzed, and kinetic parameters were estimated using pseudo-first and second-order models. The adsorption process of Hg(II) and Cr(VI) followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics, and the rate-limiting step in the adsorption was chemisorption. The Weber-Morris intraparticle pore diffusion model revealed that the Hg(II) and Cr(VI) adsorption over CNTs-PLA-Pd occurs through multiple phases. The experimental equilibrium parameters for the Hg(II) and Cr(VI) adsorption were estimated by Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherms models. All three models were well suited and demonstrated that Hg(II) and Cr(VI) adsorption over CNTs-PLA-Pd transpires through monolayer molecular covering and chemisorption.

Abstract
The present research investigates the performance of bentonite clay@biochar@Fe3O4 nanocomposite in removing mercury ions (Hg2+) from aqueous media. The physical and structural properties of bentonite clay@biochar@Fe3O4 were determined using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and Raman analyses. The highest uptake efficiency of Hg2+ was obtained at pH 6, Hg2+ concentration of 10 mg/L, contact time of 80 min, and the composite dose of 1.5 g/L. Under these conditions, the uptake efficiency of bentonite clay@biochar@Fe3O4 and bentonite clay was obtained as 98.78% and 97.67%, respectively, which are remarkable values. Also, the qmax values in Hg2+ removal using bentonite clay@biochar@Fe3O4 and bentonite clay were obtained as 66.66 and 60.98 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the uptake process of Hg2+ ions using bentonite clay@biochar@Fe3O4 nanocomposite and bentonite was spontaneous, physical, favorable, and exothermic. Besides, the impact of various divalent ions such as Co2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+ on the removal efficiency of Hg2+ was studied. The results showed that Co2+ and Zn2+ ions have the highest and lowest interference effect in Hg2+ removal, respectively. Also, the reusability of both adsorbents showed that they have high stability and can be used for at least 5 cycles with high uptake efficiency. Additionally, the removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), Hg2+, As3+, and As5+ from real wastewater using bentonite clay@biochar@Fe3O4 was obtained as 37.5%, 28.9%, 65%, 60.5%, and 50%, respectively, indicating its remarkable performance.

Rapid Determination of Mercury Ions in Environmental Water Based on an N-Rich Covalent Organic Framework Potential Sensor. INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING 2022. Abstract
In this article, an N-rich covalent organic framework (COFTFPB-TZT) was successfully synthesized using 4,4′,4′-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl) trianiline (TZT), and 4-[3,5-bis (4-formyl-phenyl) phenyl] benzaldehyde (TFPB). The as-prepared COFTFPB-TZT possesses irregular cotton wool patches with a large specific surface area. A novel selective electrode based on COFTFPB-TZT was used for the determination of Mercury ions. The abundance of N atoms in COFTFPB-TZT provides more coordination sites for Hg2+ adsorption, resulting in a change in the surface membrane potential of the electrode to selectively recognize Hg2+. Under optimal experimental conditions, the ion-selective electrode shows a good potential response to Hg2+, with a linear range of 1.0 × 10−9∼1.0 × 10−4, a Nernst response slope of 30.32 ± 0.2 mV/-PC at 25°C and a detection limit of 4.5 pM. At the same time, the mercury-ion electrode shows a fast response time of 10 s and good reproducibility and stability. The selectivity coefficients for Fe2+, Zn2+, As3+, Cr6+, Cu2+, Cr3+, Al3+, Pb2+, NH4+, Ag+, Ba2+, Mg2+, Na+, and K+ are found to be small, indicating no interference in the detection system. The proposed method can be successfully applied to the determination of Hg2+ in 3 typical environmental water samples, with a recovery rate of 98.6–101.8%. In comparison with the spectrophotometric method utilizing dithizone, the proposed method is simple and fast and holds great potential application prospects in environmental water quality monitoring and other fields.
