Abstract
The current work involves the modification of diatomite's biosiliceous frustules employing chitosan polymer chains (CS/Di) to serve as low-cost, biocompatible, multifunctional, and enhanced pharmaceutical delivery systems for 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu) together with oxaliplatin (OXPL). The CS/Di carrier displayed strong loading characteristics, notably at saturation (249.17 mg/g (OXPL) and 267.6 mg/g (5-Fu)), demonstrating a substantial 5-Fu affinity. The loading of the two types of medications onto CS/Di was conducted based on the kinetic behaviors of the conventional pseudo-first-order theory (R2 > 0.90). However, while the loading of OXPL follows the isotherm assumptions of the classic Langmuir model (R2 = 0.99), the loading of 5-Fu displays Fruendlich isotherm properties. Therefore, the 5-Fu loading displayed physical, heterogeneous, and multilayer loading properties, whereas the loading of OXPL occurred in homogeneous and monolayer form. The densities of occupied active sites of CS/Di were 37.19 and 32.8 mg/g for the sequestrations of OXPL and 5-Fu, respectively. Furthermore, by means of multimolecular processes, each loading site of CS/Di can bind up to 8 molecules of OXPL and 9 molecules of 5-Fu in a vertical orientation. This observation explains the higher loading capacities of 5-Fu in comparison to OXPL. The loading energies, which exhibit values <40 kJ/mol, provide confirmation of the dominant and significant consequences of physical processes as the regulating mechanisms. The release patterns of OXPL and 5-Fu demonstrate prolonged features over a duration of up to 120 h. The release kinetic simulation and diffusion exponents which are more than 0.45 provide evidence of the release of OXP and 5-Fu via non-Fickian transportation characteristics and the erosion/diffusion mechanism. The CS/Di carrier exhibited a substantial enhancement in the cytotoxicity of OXPL and 5-Fu against HCT-116 carcinoma cell lines, resulting in a reduction in cell viability by 4.61 and 2.26% respectively.

Cerium(IV) chitosan-based hydrogel composite for efficient adsorptive removal of phosphates(V) from aqueous solutions. Sci Rep 2023; 13:13049. Abstract
The excess presence of phosphate(V) ions in the biosphere is one of the most serious problems that negatively affect aqueous biocenosis. Thus, phosphates(V) separation is considered to be important for sustainable development. In the presented study, an original cerium(IV)-modified chitosan-based hydrogel (Ce-CTS) was developed using the chemical co-precipitation method and then used as an adsorbent for efficient removal of phosphate(V) ions from their aqueous solutions. From the scientific point of view, it represents a completely new physicochemical system. It was found that the adsorptive removal of phosphate(V) anions by the Ce-CTS adsorbent exceeded 98% efficiency which is ca. 4-times higher compared with the chitosan-based hydrogel without any modification (non-cross-linked CTS). The best result of the adsorption capacity of phosphates(V) on the Ce-CTS adsorbent, equal to 71.6 mg/g, was a result of adsorption from a solution with an initial phosphate(V) concentration 9.76 mg/dm3 and pH 7, an adsorbent dose of 1 g/dm3, temperature 20 °C. The equilibrium interphase distribution data for the Ce-CTS adsorbent and aqueous solution of phosphates(V) agreed with the theoretical Redlich-Peterson and Hill adsorption isotherm models. From the kinetic point of view, the pseudo-second-order model explained the phosphates(V) adsorption rate for Ce-CTS adsorbent the best. The specific effect of porous structure of adsorbent influencing the diffusional mass transfer resistances was identified using Weber-Morris kinetic model. The thermodynamic study showed that the process was exothermic and the adsorption ran spontaneously. Modification of CTS with cerium(IV) resulted in the significant enhancement of the chitosan properties towards both physical adsorption (an increase of the point of zero charge of adsorbent), and chemical adsorption (through the presence of Ce(IV) that demonstrates a chemical affinity for phosphate(V) anions). The elaborated and experimentally verified highly effective adsorbent can be successfully applied to uptake phosphates(V) from aqueous systems. The Ce-CTS adsorbent is stable in the conditions of the adsorption process, no changes in the adsorbent structure or leaching of the inorganic filling were observed.

Abstract
Due to rapid socioeconomic development, increased phosphorus concentrations can cause eutrophication of water bodies, with devastating effects on environmental sustainability and aquatic ecosystems. In this study, ZIF-8-PhIm was prepared for phosphorus removal using 2-phenylimidazole via the solvent-assisted ligand exchange (SALE) method. The structure and composition of ZIF-8-PhIm were characterized by various methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. Compared to the ZIF-8 material, it exhibited a multistage pore structure with larger pore capacity and pore size, increased hydrophilicity, exposure of more adsorption sites, and also stronger electrostatic interaction. Under optimized conditions (T = 298 K, C0 = 150 mg/L, dose = 0.2 g/L), the adsorption capacity of ZIF-8-PhIm reached 162.93 mg/g, which was greater than that of the ZIF-8 material (92.07 mg/g). The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were suitable for describing the phosphate adsorption of ZIF-8-PhIm. The main effects of ZIF-8-PhIm on phosphate adsorption were Zn-O-P bonding and electrostatic interactions. It also had good regeneration properties. The ZIF-8-PhIm/CS spheres were prepared using chitosan (CS) as the cross-linking agent. The results of dynamic adsorption experiments on the spheres showed a saturation capacity of 85.69 mg/g and a half-penetration time of 514.15 min at 318 K according to the fitted results.

Abstract
Over the past two decades, there has been increasing interest in the use of low-cost and effective sorbents in water treatment. Hybrid chitosan sorbents are potential materials for the adsorptive removal of phosphorus, which occurs in natural waters mainly in the form of orthophosphate(V). Even though there are numerous publications on this topic, the use of such sorbents in industrial water treatment and purification is limited and controversial. However, due to the explosive human population growth, the ever-increasing global demand for food has contributed to the consumption of phosphorus compounds and other biogenic elements (such as nitrogen, potassium, or sodium) in plant cultivation and animal husbandry. Therefore, the recovery and reuse of phosphorus compounds is an important issue to investigate for the development and maintenance of a circular economy. This paper characterizes the problem of the presence of excess phosphorus in water reservoirs and presents methods for the adsorptive removal of phosphate(V) from water matrices using chitosan composites. Additionally, we compare the impact of modifications, structure, and form of chitosan composites on the efficiency of phosphate ion removal and adsorption capacity. The state of knowledge regarding the mechanism of adsorption is detailed, and the results of research on the desorption of phosphates are described.

Abstract
Petrochemical wastewater contains p-nitrophenol, a highly toxic, bioaccumulative and persistent pollutant that can harm ecosystems and environmental sustainability. In this study, ZIF-8-PhIm was prepared for p-nitrophenol removal from petrochemical wastewater using solvent-assisted ligand exchange (SALE) with 2-phenylimidazole(2-PhIm). The ZIF-8-PhIm's composition and structure were characterised using the XRD, SEM, FT-IR, 1H NMR, XPS and BET methods. The adsorption effect of ZIF-8-PhIm on p-nitrophenol was investigated with the static adsorption method. Compared to the ZIF-8 materials, ZIF-8-PhIm exhibited stronger π-π interactions, produced a multistage pore structure with larger pore capacity and size, and had increased hydrophilicity and exposure of adsorption sites. Under optimised conditions (dose = 0.4 g/L, T = 298 K, C0 = 400 mg/L), ZIF-8-PhIm achieved an adsorption amount of 828.29 mg/g, which had a greater p-nitrophenol adsorption capacity compared to the ZIF-8 material. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models appropriately described the p-nitrophenol adsorption of ZIF-8-PhIm. Hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions dominated the p-nitrophenol adsorption of ZIF-8-PhIm. It also had relatively good regeneration properties.
