Influence of Solvent Relative Permittivity in Swab Spray Mass Spectrometry

The influence of solvent properties on ion generation by swab spray ionization was investigated. The ability of a variety of solvents of different relative permittivity, surface tension, and viscosity to form a stable and reproducible electrospray was examined. It is demonstrated that in swab spray ionization, a crucial balance between solvent composition, applied potential, and the solvent flow fed to the swab head must be maintained. The solvent composition was found to significantly affect the shape of the Taylor cone and the emerging cone jet, which eventually have an impact on the resulting ion yield. The results indicate that the relative permittivity of solvents measured under standard conditions is the main factor governing jet shaping, and consequently, the ionization efficacy. Short jets, which are required for maximum ion yield, were observed for solvents with relative permittivity εr higher than 25. Solvents exhibiting lower relative permittivity required the addition of 20% to 60% methanol to limit the jet length and to avoid the ineffective dripping pulsation. The observed effects were compared to conventional electrospray ionization and paper spray ionization.

Effects of structural variation in electrospray systems on spray characteristics

Electrospraying is a method of atomizing fluids using a high voltage potential difference. Since the atomization of electrostatic atomization does not directly charge the nozzle but only uses the potential difference, various equipment structures are possible. In the case of this study, 12 different equipment structures of nozzle, ring electrode, and substrate were configured, and data on atomization characteristics of electrospray, such as spray modes applied voltage, coating area, coating current, spray velocity, and factors used in industrial processes, were verified. Data are provided for the generation process using uniform and continuous electrospray.

Recent advances of electrospray technique for multiparticulate preparation: Drug delivery applications

The electrospray (ES) technique has proven to be an effective and a versatile approach for crafting drug delivery carriers with diverse dimensions, multiple layers, and varying morphologies. Achieving the desired particle properties necessitates careful optimization of various experimental parameters. This review delves into the most prevalent ES system configurations employed for this purpose, such as monoaxial, coaxial, triaxial, and multi-needle setups with solid or liquid collector. In addition, this work underscores the significance of ES in drug delivery carriers and its remarkable ability to encapsulate a wide spectrum of therapeutic agents, including drugs, nucleic acids, proteins, genes and cells. Depth examination of the critical parameters governing the ES process, including the choice of polymer, surface tension, voltage settings, needle size, flow rate, collector types, and the collector distance was conducted with highlighting on their implications on particle characteristics, encompassing morphology, size distribution, and drug encapsulation efficiency. These insights illuminate ES's adaptability in customizing drug delivery systems. To conclude, this review discusses ES process optimization strategies, advantages, limitations and future directions, providing valuable guidance for researchers and practitioners navigating the dynamic landscape of modern drug delivery systems.

Experimental Investigation of Electrospraying Properties Based on Ring Electrode Modification

Electrospraying uses a high-voltage potential difference to create fine droplets. This study conducts a comparative analysis of the spray pattern and droplet properties using ring electrode parameters. The spray pattern and droplet characteristics are analyzed based on the experimental parameters of the ring electrode. The results show that the cone-jet mode forms quickly for the ring electrode. In addition, as the ring diameter decreases, the ring voltage increases and an increase in the distance between the ring and the nozzle in the bottom direction decreases the Sauter mean diameter and its standard deviation. The optimal conditions for the formation of fine and uniform droplets include a ring diameter of 15 mm, a ring voltage of 7 kV, and a nozzle-to-ring distance of (+) 20 mm.
