Modeling of the Phase Inversion Point of Crude Oil Emulsion by Characterization of Crude Oil Physical Properties

The Influencing Factors and Mechanism of Anionic and Zwitterionic Surfactant on Viscosity Reduction in Heavy O/W Emulsions

The high viscosity of heavy crude oil has been an obstacle to its safe production and economic transportation. In this work, a screened emulsified viscosity reducer system is conducted. Experimental results demonstrate that the most effective viscosity reducing agent comprises sodium oleate (NaOl) and cocamidopropyl betaine (CAB-35) in a ratio of 1:2, achieving a viscosity reduction rate of 94.65%. Additionally, the interfacial tension between oil and water decreases from 27 to 4 mN/m with 0.1 mass % TEOA and NaOH in a 1:1 ratio. The oil droplet size is uniformly distributed with D mean is 14 μm and D 50 is 11 μm. Droplets flocculate as the salinity increases to 0.2 mol/L, which corresponds to the apparent increase of viscosity. The adsorption of long alkyl chain lipophilic groups on surfactant molecules at the oil-water interface and the water film alters the wettability of pipe steel to water-wet, further enhancing the application of emulsification and viscosity reduction effects. The primary mechanism behind the viscosity reduction in emulsification is attributed to strong electrostatic interactions stemming from molecular electrostatic potential distributions.

A Wax-Elastomer Superwetting Membrane with Controllable Permeability: Toward Separating a Crude Oil-in-Water Emulsion from an Oil Field

Smart superwetting membranes with finely tunable properties have attracted increased attention recently. However, they mostly focus on controllable wettability rather than controllable permeability. Also, the oil/water separation performance is usually tested with laboratory-simulated samples, making it hard for the materials to meet practical applications. Herein, we fabricate thermally responsive superwetting membranes with wax, polystyrene-B-poly(ethylene-ran-butylene)-B-polys (SEBS, a kind of elastomer), and polydopamine (PDA) to realize emulsion separation with controllable permeability. Benefiting from the elasticity of SEBS and the fluidity difference of wax at different temperatures, the pore size of the membrane could be readily tuned, resulting in different permeability. The separation flux is 0 at ambient temperature (pore size 0.394 μm) and is over 100 L m-2 h-1 at a high temperature (pore size 0.477 μm). The membrane could realize the separation of simulated oil-in-water emulsions with efficiency above 99.4%. Furthermore, it successfully achieved crude oil-in-water emulsion separation from the oil field with oil residues of less than 300 mg L-1 in the temperature range of 60-80 °C, which is the actual working temperature adopted in industrial production. Such a polydopamine/wax-SEBS modified membrane with unprecedented controllable permeability can promote the development of the emulsion treatment field and provide a new direction for designing smart superwetting materials.

The Influences of Emulsification Variables on Emulsion Characteristics Prepared through the Phase Inversion Temperature Method as Engine Fuel

The effects of emulsification variables, such as surfactant type and heating/cooling emulsion processes, on the emulsification characteristics of silicone oil’s emulsions prepared by the phase inversion temperature method were investigated in this study. The water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions have been widely applied to enhance burning efficiency and reduce both pollutant emissions and fuel consumption. The silicone oil was emulsified with de-ionized water with the assistance of nonionic surfactants to form oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. The hydrophilic–lipophilic balance (HLB) value of the Span 80 and Tween 20 surfactant mixture was set equal to 10 based on their weight proportions and the respective HLB values of the two surfactants. The experimental results show that the emulsions with the Span 80/Tween 20 surfactant mixture appeared to have a higher phase inversion temperature and a larger electrical conductance. On the other hand, it has a lower emulsification stability and a narrower range of phase inversion temperature than the emulsions prepared with a Brij 30 surfactant (polyoxyethylene (4) lauryl ether). The increase in surfactant concentration from 1 wt.% to 10 wt.% decreased the electrical conductance and phase inversion temperature while increasing the suspensibility and absorbance value for the emulsions prepared with either Span 80/Tween 20 mixture or Brij 30.
