Biodegradable Poly(Butylene Succinate) Nanocomposites Based on Dimeric Surfactant Organomodified Clays with Enhanced Water Vapor Barrier and Mechanical Properties

Eggshell waste act as multifunctional fillers overcoming the restrictions of starch-based films

Starch has great potential to replace petroleum-based plastics in food packaging applications. However, starch films often exhibit poor mechanical and barrier properties, and are vulnerable to moisture and bacterial contamination. This study proved that the incorporation of eggshell powder (ES) enhanced the hydrogen bonding in starch-based films significantly, which contributed to improved tensile strength, Young's modulus, and water resistance of the films. The performance of ES-incorporated films could be optimized by adjusting the size, concentration, and surface property of ES in the film matrix. Notably, adsorbing epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on the surface of porous ES contributed to enhanced dispersibility of the fillers in the film matrix, which increased the tortuous path of light, water vapor, and oxygen have to take through the films, resulting in increased UV screening performance, water vapor and oxygen barrier property of the films by 60 %, 7.2 %, and 27.9 %, respectively. Meanwhile, loading EGCG in ES also enable superior antibacterial activity of the final films. This study suggests that eggshell fillers offer a sustainable means of improving the functional performance of starch-based films, which may increase their application as packaging materials in the food industry.

Polysaccharides and proteins based bionanocomposites as smart packaging materials: From fabrication to food packaging applications a review

Food industry is the biggest and rapidly growing industries all over the world. This sector consumes around 40 % of the total plastic produced worldwide as packaging material. The conventional packaging material is mainly petrochemical based. However, these petrochemical based materials impose serious concerns towards environment after its disposal as they are nondegradable. Thus, in search of an appropriate replacement for conventional plastics, biopolymers such as polysaccharides (starch, cellulose, chitosan, natural gums, etc.), proteins (gelatin, collagen, soy protein, etc.), and fatty acids find as an option but again limited by its inherent properties. Attention on the initiatives towards the development of more sustainable, useful, and biodegradable packaging materials, leading the way towards a new and revolutionary green era in the food sector. Eco-friendly packaging materials are now growing dramatically, at a pace of about 10-20 % annually. The recombination of biopolymers and nanomaterials through intercalation composite technology at the nanoscale demonstrated some mesmerizing characteristics pertaining to both biopolymer and nanomaterials such as rigidity, thermal stability, sensing and bioactive property inherent to nanomaterials as well as biopolymers properties such as flexibility, processability and biodegradability. The dramatic increase of scientific research in the last one decade in the area of bionanocomposites in food packaging had reflected its potential as a much-required and important alternative to conventional petroleum-based material. This review presents a comprehensive overview on the importance and recent advances in the field of bionanocomposite and its application in food packaging. Different methods for the fabrication of bionanocomposite are also discussed briefly. Finally, a clear perspective and future prospects of bionanocomposites in food packaging were presented.

Development and characterization of active starch-based films incorporating graphene/polydopamine/Cu2+ nanocomposite fillers

With increasing environmental awareness and food safety concern worldwide, biodegradable active food packaging gained wide attention in recent years. Starch has been regarded as one of the most potential biomaterials to produce biodegradable films. However, relatively poor functional performance of starch-based films severely limits their application as food packaging materials. Carbon-based fillers can be used to enhance the functional attributes of starch-based films, but they are often difficult to incorporate because of their poor matrix dispersibility. In this study, we developed a simple green method to improve the dispersity of graphene in starch-based films by modifying the graphene surfaces using mussel-inspired polydopamine and copper ions. Spectroscopy and morphology analyses showed the surface of graphene was successfully modified. The addition of the nanocomposites positively influenced the microstructure of the starch-based films, as well as impacting their mechanical, barrier, and thermal properties. Additionally, the composite films exhibited antibacterial activity against food borne pathogens, suggesting promising potential of the films acting as active food packaging. Overall, the method developed in this study has the potential for optimizing and endowing extra properties of starch-based films so as to increase their application in biodegradable food packaging.
