Drying kinetics and energy efficiency of soot ash of smelting silicon manganese alloys under microwave heating

When smelting silicon manganese alloy in an industrial electric furnace, it will produce smoke and dust waste gas, which can be utilized again back to the furnace and improve the utilization rate of raw materials after a particular trapping device and collection treatment. However, at higher moisture levels, they are prone to explode. Effects of various initial masses, initial moisture contents, and microwave output powers on the soot ash of smelting silicon manganese alloy were studies. The findings indicate that the microwave drying rate increases with all three variables. The time for complete microwave drying is directly proportional to the sample's initial moisture content and the sample's initial mass, and the time for complete microwave drying is inversely proportional to the microwave output power. The results demonstrate that the Modified Page model can accurately describe the microwave drying process. The experimental data were fitted experimentally by drying kinetic models. Microscopic characterization of soot ash from refining silico‑manganese alloys before and after drying was carried out using FTIR and SEM. Through FTIR characterization, the peak value of the -OH absorption peak decreases upon drying, and SEM results in no agglomeration caused by microwave drying and better dispersion of the soot ash of the dried smelted silica‑manganese alloys, all of which proved that microwaves could effectively remove water. It was discovered that the diffusion coefficient increased gradually with increasing power when it was computed using Fick's second law. The diffusion coefficient increases and then decreases as the moisture content increases. The diffusion coefficient decreases as the initial mass increases. Activation energy of microwave drying of soot ash from the refining of silicomanganese alloys was calculated to be -1.4467 W/g. Its purpose is to offer a detailed guide for the industrial drying of soot ash from silicomanganese alloy refinement using microwave drying technology.

Buriti (Mauritia flexuosa) shell flour: Nutritional composition, chemical profile, and antioxidant potential as a strategy for valuing waste from native Brazilian fruits

The Cerrado is one of the most biodiverse biomes in the world, characterized by a wealth of native fruits with unique nutritional characteristics. In this sense, the social, economic, and environmental importance of fully utilizing food is widely recognized. Therefore, generally considered waste, fruit shells can be transformed into a coproduct with high added value. The objective of this work was to carry out a comprehensive assessment of the physicochemical properties, carbohydrate and fatty acid profile, phytochemical compounds, phenolic profile, and antioxidant potential of the recovered extracts of buriti (Mauritia flexuosa) shells in natura and dehydrated at 55 °C (flour). In addition, the functional properties were verified by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) from buriti shell flour. The results indicated high fiber content and energy value for the sample processed at 55 °C (58.95 g/100 g and 378.91 kcal/100 g, respectively) and low lipid and protein content (1.03 g/100 g and 1.39 g/100 g, respectively). Regardless of the sample analyzed, maltose was the majority sugar (37.33 - 281.01 g/100 g). The main fatty acids detected were oleic acid (61.33 - 62.08 %) followed by palmitic acid (33.91 - 34.40 %). The analysis of the mineral profile demonstrated that the samples did not differ significantly from each other, showing that the drying process did not interfere with the results obtained (p ≤ 0.05). The analysis of individual phenolics allowed the identification of six phenolic compounds in buriti shells. However, it is possible to observe that the drying method had a positive and significant influence on the phenolic profile (p ≤ 0.05), with chlorogenic acid (2.63 - 8.27 mg/100 g) and trigonelline (1.06 - 41.52 mg/100 g), the majority compounds. On the other hand, it is important to highlight that buriti shells have a high content of carotenoids, mainly β-carotene (27.18 - 62.94 µg/100 g) and α-carotene (18.23 - 60.28 µg/100 g), also being positively influenced by the drying process at 55 °C (p ≤ 0.05). The dried shells showed a high content of phytochemical compounds and high antioxidant activity based on the different methods tested. The results show that buriti shell flour can be fully utilized and has nutritional and chemical aspects that can be applied to develop new sustainable, nutritious, and functional food formulations.

In Vitro Hemostatic Activity of Novel Fish Gelatin-Alginate Sponge (FGAS) Prototype

A hemostatic sponge prototype was successfully synthesized from fish gelatin as an alternative to mammalian gelatin; it was mixed with alginate in certain combinations, double cross-linked with calcium ions, and gamma irradiated at a dose of 20 kGy to improve the characteristics and effectiveness of its function as a local hemostatic agent. There were improvements in the physicochemical and mechanical properties, porosity index, absorption capacity, biodegradation properties, biocompatibility, and hemocompatibility of the fish gelatin-alginate sponge (FGAS) prototypes compared with the pure fish gelatin sponge. Hemostatic activity tests showed that the means for clotting time, prothrombin time, and activated partial thromboplastin time were shorter in the FGAS prototype than in the negative control, and there was no significant difference compared with the commercial gelatin sponge. The hemostatic mechanism of the FGAS prototype combined a passive mechanism as a concentrator factor and an active mechanism through the release of calcium ions as a coagulation factor in the coagulation cascade process.

Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of the Inhibitor Efficiency of Eucalyptus globulus Leaf Essential Oil (EuEO) on Mild Steel Corrosion in a Molar Hydrochloric Acid Medium

As a corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in a molar hydrochloric acid medium, we investigated the potential of Eucalyptus globulus essential oil (EuEO). Through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization curves, and theoretical methods, including DFT/B3LYP 6-31G (d, p) and Monte Carlo simulations, the interactions between the EuEO components and the steel surface were analyzed. D-Allose, Betulinaldehyde, and Uvaol were identified as the major active compounds in the GC-MS analysis. The experimental results showed that EuEO reached an inhibitory efficiency as high as 97% at a 1 g/L concentration. The findings suggest that EuEO operates as a mixed-type inhibitor, reducing both cathodic and anodic reactions, as well as building up a protective coating on the steel surface. Simulations also confirmed that EuEO molecules function as electron donors and acceptors, enhancing corrosion resistance.

Commercializable Naphthalene Diimide Anolytes for Neutral Aqueous Organic Redox Flow Batteries

Neutral aqueous organic redox flow batteries (AORFBs) hold the potential to facilitate the transition of renewable energy sources from auxiliary to primary energy, the commercial production of anolyte materials still suffers from insufficient performance of high-concentration and the high cost of the preparation problem. To overcome these challenges, this study provides a hydrothermal synthesis methodology and introduces the charged functional groups into hydrophobic naphthalene diimide cores, and prepares a series of high-performance naphthalene diimide anolytes. Under the synergistic effect of π-π stacking and H-bonding networks, the naphthalene diimide exhibits excellent structural stability and the highest water solubility (1.85 M for dex-NDI) reported to date. By employing the hydrothermal method, low-cost naphthalene diimides are successfully synthesized on a hundred-gram scale of $0.16 g-1 ($2.43 Ah-1), which is also the lowest price reported to date. The constructed full battery achieves a high electron concentration of 2.4 M, a high capacity of 54.4 Ah L-1, and a power density of 318 mW cm-2 with no significant capacity decay observed during long-duration cycling. These findings provide crucial support for the commercialization of AORFBs and pave the way for revolutionary developments in neutral AORFBs.

Evaluating a polymicrobial biofilm model for structural components by co-culturing Komagataeibacter hansenii produced bacterial cellulose with Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1

A polymicrobial biofilm model of Komagataeibacter hansenii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was developed to understand whether a pre-existing matrix affects the ability of another species to build a biofilm. P. aeruginosa was inoculated onto the preformed K. hansenii biofilm consisting of a cellulose matrix. P. aeruginosa PAO1 colonized and infiltrated the K. hansenii bacterial cellulose biofilm (BC), as indicated by the presence of cells at 19 μm depth in the translucent hydrogel matrix. Bacterial cell density increased along the imaged depth of the biofilm (17-19 μm). On day 5, the average bacterial count across sections was 67 ± 4 % P. aeruginosa PAO1 and 33 ± 6 % K. hansenii. Biophysical characterization of the biofilm indicated that colonization by P. aeruginosa modified the biophysical properties of the BC matrix, which inlcuded increased density, heterogeneity, degradation temperature and thermal stability, and reduced crystallinity, swelling ability and moisture content. This further indicates colonization of the biofilm by P. aeruginosa. While eDNA fibres - a key viscoelastic component of P. aeruginosa biofilm - were present on the surface of the co-cultured biofilm on day 1, their abundance decreased over time, and by day 5, no eDNA was observed, either on the surface or within the matrix. P. aeruginosa-colonized biofilm devoid of eDNA retained its mechanical properties. The observations demonstrate that a pre-existing biofilm scaffold of K. hansenii inhibits P. aeruginosa PAO1 eDNA production and suggest that eDNA production is a response by P. aeruginosa to the viscoelastic properties of its environment.

Electricity out of electronic trash: Triboelectric nanogenerators from discarded smartphone displays for biomechanical energy harvesting

In the context of escalating electronic waste (e-waste) generated by the rapid evolution of electronic devices, particularly smartphones/mobiles, the imperative for effective e-waste management to mitigate adverse environmental and health consequences has become increasingly apparent. Herein, novel mobile phone-based triboelectric nanogenerators (M-TENGs) are fabricated from discarded smartphone displays of eight different brands (B1-B8) for harvesting electrical energy. Analytical characterization techniques such as SEM and EDS are employed for morphological investigation. The tribopositivity and tribonegativity of the smartphone display layers are confirmed using the FTIR technique and test materials. The percentage tensile strength of the selected triboactive layers is measured to assess the mechanical durability. The electrical measurements are performed for all eight M-TENG devices, notably the device constructed from B8 smartphone display layers outperforms other brands by generating about three and five times higher voltage and current than the M-TENG device composed of B1 layers. Further, the optimized device is subjected to frequency, force, and stability tests, and also the impact of fluctuating humidity on the device performance is analyzed. Moreover, the M-TENG demonstrates its versatility by efficiently charging commercial electrolytic capacitors, powering LEDs, and effectively harvesting biomechanical energy. Thus, the present study represents a significant step towards mitigating the challenges posed by electronic smartphone waste disposal while simultaneously offering a viable pathway to harvest electricity and power a variety of applications.

The role of macrophage polarization and related key molecules in pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis induced by coal dust dynamic inhalation exposure in Sprague-Dawley rats

Coal dust is the main occupational hazard factor during coal mining operations. This study aimed to investigate the role of macrophage polarization and its molecular regulatory network in lung inflammation and fibrosis in Sprague-Dawley rats caused by coal dust exposure. Based on the key exposure parameters (exposure route, dose and duration) of the real working environment of coal miners, the dynamic inhalation exposure method was employed, and a control group and three coal dust groups (4, 10 and 25 mg/m3) were set up. Lung function was measured after 30, 60 and 90 days of coal dust exposure. Meanwhile, the serum, lung tissue and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were collected after anesthesia for downstream experiments (histopathological analysis, RT-qPCR, ELISA, etc.). The results showed that coal dust exposure caused stunted growth, increased lung organ coefficient and decreased lung function in rats. The expression level of the M1 macrophage marker iNOS was significantly upregulated in the early stage of exposure and was accompanied by higher expression of the inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and the chemokines IL-8, CCL2 and CCL5, with the most significant trend of CCL5 mRNA in lung tissues. Expression of the M2 macrophage marker Arg1 was significantly upregulated in the mid to late stages of coal dust exposure and was accompanied by higher expression of the anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-10 and TGF-β. In conclusion, macrophage polarization and its molecular regulatory network (especially CCL5) play an important role in lung inflammation and fibrosis in SD rats exposed to coal dust by dynamic inhalation.

Optimization of Plasma Activated Water Extraction of Pleurotus ostreatus Polysaccharides on Its Physiochemical and Biological Activity Using Response Surface Methodology

This study focused on optimizing the extraction of P. ostreatus polysaccharides (POPs) using plasma-activated water (PAW). A single factor and response surface methodology were employed to optimize and evaluate the polysaccharide yield, physiochemical characteristics, and biological activities of POPs. The observed findings were compared to those obtained by the conventional hot water extraction method (100 °C, 3 h), as the control treatment. The optimal extraction conditions were obtained at 700 W PAW power, 58 s treatment time, 1:19 sample-to-water ratio, and 15 L/min gas flow rate. In these conditions, the PAW-treated samples experienced changes in surface morphology due to plasma etching, leading to a 288% increase in the polysaccharide yield (11.67%) compared to the control sample (3.01%). Furthermore, the PAW-treated sample exhibited superior performance in terms of biological activities, namely phenolic compounds (53.79 mg GAE/100 g), DPPH scavenging activity (72.77%), and OH scavenging activity (65.03%), which were 29%, 18%, and 38% higher than those of control sample, respectively. The results highlighted the importance of process optimization and provided new evidence for PAW as an alternative approach to enhance the extraction efficiency of POPs, a novel source of natural antioxidants which enables diverse applications in the food industry.
