Development and Application of Ruthenium(II) and Iridium(III) Based Complexes for Anion Sensing

Improvements in the design of receptors for the detection and quantification of anions are desirable and ongoing in the field of anion chemistry, and remarkable progress has been made in this direction. In this regard, the development of luminescent chemosensors for sensing anions is an imperative and demanding sub-area in supramolecular chemistry. This decade, in particular, witnessed advancements in chemosensors based on ruthenium and iridium complexes for anion sensing by virtue of their modular synthesis and rich chemical and photophysical properties, such as visible excitation wavelength, high quantum efficiency, high luminescence intensity, long lifetimes of phosphorescence, and large Stokes shifts, etc. Thus, this review aims to summarize the recent advances in the development of ruthenium(II) and iridium(III)-based complexes for their application as luminescent chemosensors for anion sensing. In addition, the focus was devoted to designing aspects of polypyridyl complexes of these two transition metals with different recognition motifs, which upon interacting with different inorganic anions, produces desirable quantifiable outputs.

Current Advances in Diazoles-based Chemosensors for CN- and FDetection

Advances in molecular probes have recently intensified because they are valuable tools in studying species of interest for human health, the environment, and industry. Among these species, cyanide (CN-) and fluoride (F-) stand out as hazardous and toxic ions in trace amounts. Thus, there is a significant interest in probes design for their detection with diverse diazoles (pyrazole and imidazole) used for this purpose. These diazole derivatives are known as functional molecules because of their known synthetic versatility and applicability, as they exhibit essential photophysical properties with helpful recognition centers. This review provides an overview of the recent progress (2017-2021) in diazole-based sensors for CN- and F- detection, using the azolic ring as a signaling or recognition unit. The discussion focuses on the mechanism of the action described for recognizing the anion, the structure of the probes with the best synthetic simplicity, detection limits (LODs), application, and selectivity. In this context, the analysis involves probes for cyanide sensing first, then probes for fluoride sensing, and ultimately, dual probes that allow both species recognition.

Synthesis and Optoelectronic Properties of Cationic Iridium(III) Complexes with o-Carborane-Based 2-Phenyl Benzothiazole Ligands

A series of cationic cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes with o-carborane cage on the main ligand of 2-phenylbenzothiazole were synthesized. The prepared iridium complexes (C1-C6) were fully characterized by UV-vis, NMR, and FT-IR spectra. The exact molecular structure of complex C1 was further studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The different substitution position of o-carborane on the 2-phenylbenzothiazole ring lead to obvious differences in the emission properties of the synthesized complexes. The o-carboranyl unit results in a bathochromic shift of 10 nm in the fluorescence emission spectrum of C2. In addition, the presence of an o-carborane fragment promoted the strong fluorescence intensity of C1 and C4, which can be used as a tool to effectively boost the intensity of fluorescence properties. The emission fluorescent behavior of iridium(III) complexes can be facilely tuned by structural variations in the main ligands of these materials.

Multifunctional rhodamine B appended ROMP derived fluorescent probe detects Al3+ and selectively labels lysosomes in live cells

There a few reports of rhodamine-based fluorescent sensors for selective detection of only Al3+, due to the challenge of identifying a suitable ligand for binding Al3+ ion. The use of fluorophore moieties appended to a polymer backbone for sensing applications is far from mature. Here, we report a new fluorescent probe/monomer 4 and its ROMP derived polymer P for specific detection of Al3+ ions. Both monomer 4 and its polymer P exhibit high selectivity toward only Al3+ with no interference from other metal ions, having a limit detection of 0.5 and 2.1 µM, respectively. The reversible recognition of monomer 4 and P for Al3+ was also proved in presence of Na2EDTA by both UV-Vis and fluorometric titration. The experimental data indicates the behavior of 4 and P toward Al3+ is pH independent in medium conditions. In addition, the switch-on luminescence response of 4 at acidic pH (0 < 5.0), allowed us to specifically stain lysosomes (pH ~ 4.5-5.0) in live cells.

Tandem Detection of Sub-Nano Molar Level CN- and Hg2+ in Aqueous Medium by a Suitable Molecular Sensor: A Viable Solution for Detection of CN- and Development of the RGB-Based Sensory Device

An inimitable urea-based multichannel chemosensor, DTPH [1,5-bis-(2,6-dichloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)carbonohydrazide], was examined to be highly proficient to recognize CN- based on the H-bonding interaction between sensor -NH moiety and CN- in aqueous medium with explicit selectivity. In the absorption spectral titration of DTPH, a new peak at higher wavelength was emerged in titrimetric analytical studies of CN- with the zero-order reaction kinetics affirming the substantial sensor-analyte interaction. The isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) experiment further affirmed that the sensing process was highly spontaneous with the Gibbs free energy of -26 × 104 cal/mol. The binding approach between DTPH and CN- was also validated by more than a few experimental studies by means of several spectroscopic tools along with the theoretical calculations. A very low detection limit of the chemosensor toward CN- (0.15 ppm) further instigated to design an RGB-based sensory device based on the colorimetric upshots of the chemosensor in order to develop a distinct perception regarding the presence of innocuous or precarious level of the CN- in a contaminated solution. Moreover, the reversibility of the sensor in the presence of CN- and Hg2+ originated a logic gate mimic ensemble. Additionally, the real-field along with the in vitro CN- detection efficiency of the photostable DTPH was also accomplished by using various biological specimens.

Novel "Turn-On" Fluorescent Probe for Highly Selectively Sensing Fluoride in Aqueous Solution Based on Tb3+-Functionalized Metal-Organic Frameworks

A Zr-based metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF) which has free carbonyl groups is synthesized successfully through mix-ligand strategy. Subsequently, Tb³⁺ is encapsulated into a Zr-MOF by postcoordinated modification. The Tb³⁺@Zr-MOF exhibits the characteristic emission of Tb³⁺ because of efficient sensitization through antenna effects. The Tb³⁺@Zr-MOF is further developed as a novel "turn-on" fluorescent probe to detect fluoride ions in aqueous solution. The results show that Tb³⁺@Zr-MOF exhibits excellent selectivity, high stability, low detection limits, and good anti-interference for sensitizing fluoride ions. In addition, the possible sensing mechanism that the induced luminescence properties may be attributed to Lewis acid-base interactions is discussed.

A new fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensor for Al3+ and F−/CN− based on a julolidine unit and its bioimaging in living cells

A novel multifunctional chemosensor HL bearing a julolidine unit and a Schiff base unit has been synthesized. As a fluorescent sensor, HL exhibited excellent selectivity and high sensitivity to Al³⁺ and F⁻/CN⁻ with a low detection limit in acetonitrile. Moreover, HL also showed good colorimetric selectivity to F⁻/CN⁻; a solution color change from colorless to light yellow in acetonitrile was observed by the ‘naked-eye’. The properties of HL with Al³⁺ and F⁻/CN⁻ were studied by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry and ¹H NMR titration. Furthermore, the cell imaging experimental results indicated that the chemosensor HL could be applied for the detection of Al³⁺ in living cells.

A novel pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular sensor (AP5N) for tandem fluorescence detection of Fe³⁺ and F⁻ was successfully prepared. Interestingly, the sensor AP5N shows excellent facile separation property for Fe³⁺.
