Cyanosilylation of Aromatic Aldehydes by Cationic Ruthenium(II) Complexes of Benzimidazole-Derived O-Functionalized N-Heterocyclic Carbenes at Ambient Temperature under Solvent-Free Conditions

A Multivariate 2D Metal-Organic Framework with Open Metal Sites for Catalytic CO2 Cycloaddition and Cyanosilylation Reactions

This work reports the synthesis of a dual functional 2D framework, {[Zn2(4-tpom)2(oxdz)2]·4H2O}n (1), at room temperature, where a bent dicarboxylate, oxdz2- (4,4'-(1,3,4-oxadiazole-2,5-diyl)dibenzoate), and a neutral flexible N-donor linker, 4-tpom (tetrakis(4-pyridyloxymethylene)methane), are utilized. Its single-crystal X-ray analysis indicated a 2-fold interpenetrated 2D framework having tetracoordinated Zn(II) centers and dangling pyridyl groups. Its further characterization was carried out with elemental microanalysis, FTIR spectroscopy, TG analysis, and powder X-ray diffraction. The tetracoordinated Zn(II) centers as active Lewis acidic sites and the N atoms of 4-tpom as Lewis basic sites in 1 are explored for its functioning as a heterogeneous catalyst in two important reactions, (i) cycloaddition of CO2 with various epoxides and (ii) cyanosilylation reaction under solvent-free conditions. We could successfully show the cycloaddition of styrene oxide with CO2 (99% conversion) under balloon pressure with low catalyst (0.2-0.3 mol %) and cocatalyst (0.5-0.75 mol %) loadings, which is otherwise difficult to achieve. It was observed that all the substrates (aromatic and aliphatic), irrespective of their sizes, showed conversion percentage >99%. In the cyanosilylation reaction, a conversion of 96% was obtained with 1.5 mol % of 1 at room temperature for 12 h. This framework emerged as an excellent recyclable catalyst for both the reactions.

Discrete Singular Metallophilic Interaction in Stable Large 12-Membered Binuclear Silver and Gold Metallamacrocycles of Amido-Functionalized Imidazole and 1,2,4-Triazole-Derived N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

Metallophilic interactions were observed in four pairs of 12-membered metallamacrocyclic silver and gold complexes of imidazole-derived N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), [1-(R¹)-3-N-(2,6-di-(R²)-phenylacetamido)-imidazol-2-ylidene]₂M₂ [R¹ = p-MeC₆H₄, R² = Me, M = Ag (1b) and Au (1c); R¹ = Me, R² = i-Pr, M = Ag (2b) and Au (2c); R¹ = Et, R² = i-Pr, M = Ag (3b) and Au (3c)], and a 1,2,4-triazole-derived N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC), [1-(i-Pr)-4-N-(2,6-di-(i-Pr)-phenylacetamido)-1,2,4-triazol-2-ylidene]₂M₂ [M = Ag (4b) and Au (4c)]. The X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, and computational studies indicate the presence of metallophilic interactions in these complexes, which are significantly influenced by the sterics and the electronics of the N-amido substituents of the NHC ligands. The argentophilic interaction in the silver 1b-4b complexes was stronger than the aurophilic interaction in the gold 1c-4c complexes, with the metallophilic interaction decreasing in the order 4b > 1b > 1c > 4c > 3b > 3c > 2b > 2c. The 1b-4b complexes were synthesized from the corresponding amido-functionalized imidazolium chloride 1a-3a and the 1,2,4-triazolium chloride 4a salts upon treatment with Ag₂O. The reaction of 1b-4b complexes with (Me₂S)AuCl gave the gold 1c-4c complexes.

One pot tandem dehydrogenative cross-coupling of primary and secondary alcohols by ruthenium amido-functionalized 1,2,4-triazole derived N-heterocyclic carbene complexes

One-pot tandem dehydrogenative cross-coupling of primary and secondary alcohols was catalyzed by three ruthenium complexes [1-(R)-4-N-(furan-2-ylmethyl)acetamido-1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidene]Ru(p-cymene)Cl [R = Et (1b), i-Pr (2b), Bn (3b)], of amido-functionalized 1,2,4-triazole derived N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were employed for the ruthenium (1b) precatalyst to understand this reaction mechanism completely, and the mechanisms adapted are divided categorically into three steps (i) nucleophilic substitution of chloride ions by alcohols, (ii) dehydrogenation of primary and secondary alcohols, and (iii) olefin and ketone hydrogenation. Our mechanistic study reveals that the formation of a deprotonated Ru-alcoholate (A) or (E) intermediate is favorable compared to the protonated form (A') or (E') from (1b) by associative nucleophilic substitution. Though an ionic pathway that proceeds through (A') or (E'), has less barriers in the dehydrogenation and olefin/ketone hydrogenation steps than that of the neutral pathway, proceeding through (A) or (E), a steep energy barrier was observed in the first nucleophilic substitution step, prohibiting the reaction to proceed via the intermediate (A') or (E'). Thus, our thorough mechanistic study reveals that the reaction proceeds via deprotonated Ru-alcoholate (A) or (E) species. Furthermore, the 1,4 addition of an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compound is kinetically and thermodynamically favorable over the 1,2 addition, and the experiments support these observations. As a testimony towards practical application in synthesizing bio-active flavonoid based natural products, five different flavan derivatives (16-20), were synthesized by the dehydrogenative coupling reaction using the neutral ruthenium (1-3)b complexes.

One pot tandem dual CC and CO bond reductions in the β-alkylation of secondary alcohols with primary alcohols by ruthenium complexes of amido and picolyl functionalized N-heterocyclic carbenes

Two different classes of ruthenium complexes, namely, [1-mesityl-3-(2,6-Me₂-phenylacetamido)-imidazol-2-ylidene]Ru(p-cymene)Cl (1c) and {[1-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-3-(2,6-Me₂-phenyl)-imidazol-2-ylidene]Ru(p-cymene)Cl}Cl (2c), successfully catalyzed the one-pot tandem alcohol-alcohol coupling reactions of a variety of secondary and primary alcohols, in moderate to good yields of ca. 63-89%. The mechanistic investigation performed on two representative catalytic substrates, 1-phenylethanol and benzyl alcohol using the neutral ruthenium (1c) complex showed that the catalysis proceeded via a partially reduced CC hydrogenated carbonyl species, [PhCOCH₂CH₂Ph] (3'), to the fully reduced CO and CC hydrogenated secondary alcohol, [PhCH(OH)CH₂CH₂Ph] (3). Furthermore, the time dependent study showed that the major product of the catalysis modulated between (3') and (3) during the catalysis run performed over an extended period of 120 hours. Finally, the practical utility of the alcohol-alcohol coupling reaction was demonstrated by preparing five different flavan derivatives (13-17) related to various bioactive flavonoid natural products, in a one-pot tandem fashion.

Novel primary amide-based cationic metal complexes: green synthesis, crystal structures, Hirshfeld surface analysis and solvent-free cyanosilylation reaction

A new symmetrical and flexible primary amide functionalized ligand, 2,2'-(ethane-1,2-diylbis((pyridin-2-ylmethyl)azanediyl))diacetamide (2-BPEG), has been synthesized and structurally characterized. Using this multidentate ligand, four novel metal complexes, namely [Cu(2-BPEG)](ClO4)2·0.5H2O (1), [Zn(2-BPEG)](ClO4)2 (2), [Zn(2-BPEG)](ZnCl4)·H2O (3) and [Cd(2-BPEG)(H2O)](ClO4)2·H2O (4), have been synthesized under ambient conditions and characterized by elemental, spectroscopic and thermal analysis, and single and powder X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1-3 are hexacoordinated with an N4O2 donor set (provided by the hexadentate 2-BPEG ligand), while complex 4 is heptacoordinated with an additional coordinated water molecule. In all cases, the 2-BPEG ligand acts as a hexadentate ligand. A change in the starting metal salt has resulted in the formation of 2 and 3 with different tetrahedral anions, ClO4- and ZnCl4-, respectively. This has provided an opportunity to showcase anion-directed supramolecular networks for these compounds. Compounds 1, 2 and 4 with perchlorate anions show similar and comparable intermolecular interactions in their 3D networks. On the other hand, the supramolecular self-assembly of 3 is dominated by a variety of intermolecular interactions such as C-HCl, N-HCl, O-HCl and C-HO due to the presence of a tetrachlorozincate(ii) ion. Moreover, the role of weak intermolecular interactions in the crystal packing has been analysed and quantified using Hirshfeld surface analysis. Furthermore, compound 4 exhibiting an open Lewis acid site has been found to be a very efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for the solvent-free cyanosilylation of various aldehydes with trimethylsilyl cyanide (TMSCN) producing the corresponding trimethylsilyl ether in high yields.
