Butterfly M2 IIIEr2 (MIII = Fe and Al) SMMs: Synthesis, Characterization, and Magnetic Properties

Gaining Insights into the Interplay between Optical and Magnetic Properties in Photoexcited Coordination Compounds

We describe early and recent advances in the fascinating field of combined magnetic and optical properties of inorganic coordination compounds and in particular of 3d-4f single molecule magnets. We cover various applied techniques which allow for the correlation of results obtained in the frequency and time domain in order to highlight the specific properties of these compounds and the future challenges towards multidimensional spectroscopic tools. An important point is to understand the details of the interplay of magnetic and optical properties through performing time-resolved studies in the presence of external fields especially magnetic ones. This will enable further exploration of this fundamental interactions i. e. the two components of electromagnetic radiation influencing optical properties.

SMM features of a large lanthanide family of butterfly CrIII2LnIII2 pivalate complexes (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb)

In this work we report the synthesis, structural characterization and magnetic properties of a family of butterfly complexes {Cr2Ln2} with Ln = Tb (4), Ho (5), Er (6), Tm (7) and Yb (8), extending the family of previously reported isostructural compounds with Gd (1), Dy (2) and Y (3). As in 1 and 2, an anti-ferromagnetic Cr(III)-Ln(III) exchange interaction is found. For oblate ions 4 and 5, SMM behavior with a purely Orbach relaxation mechanism is observed with thermal barriers of 38 cm-1 (4) and 32 cm-1 (5). Complex 4 displays hysteresis opening up to 2.4 K with loss of magnetization at zero field. The prolate complex ions 6 and 7 are field-induced SMM's with dominant Orbach, direct and QTM relaxation mechanisms. Compound 8 did not show SMM properties.

Self-Assembly of Lanthanide-Aluminum Cluster-Organic Frameworks with Magnetocaloric Effect and Luminescence

The self-assembly of the lanthanide metal-organic frameworks presents a formidable challenge but profound significance. Compared with the metal-organic frameworks based on 4f-3d ions, the chemistry of 4f-3p metal-organic frameworks has not been fully explored so far. In this study, two lanthanide-aluminum-based clusters [Ln6Al(IN)10(μ3-OH)5(μ3-O)3(H2O)8]·xH2O (x = 2, Ln = Gd, abbreviated as Gd6Al; x = 2.5, Ln = Eu, abbreviated as Eu6Al; HIN = isonicotinic acid) have been meticulously designed and obtained by hydrothermal reaction at low pH. The crystallographic study revealed that both Gd6Al and Eu6Al clusters exhibit an unprecedented sandwiched metal-organic framework holding a highly ordered honeycomb network. To our knowledge, it is the first case of Ln-Al-based cluster-organic frameworks. Furthermore, magnetic investigation of Gd6Al manifests a decent magnetic entropy change of -ΔSmmax = 28.8 J kg-1 K-1 at 2 K for ΔH = 7.0 T. Significantly, the introduction of AlIII ions into the lanthanide metal-organic frameworks displays excellent solid-state luminescent capability with a lifetime of 371.6 μs and quantum yield of 6.64%. The construction and investigation of these two Ln-Al clusters represent great progress in the 4f-3p metal-organic framework.

From the {FeIII 2 Ln2 } Butterfly's Perspective: the Magnetic Benefits and Challenges of Cooperativity within 3 d-4 f Based Coordination Clusters

In this Review we discuss the tuning handles which can be used to steer the magnetic properties of Fe^III‐4 f “butterfly” compounds. The majority of presented compounds were produced in the context of project A3 “Di‐ to tetranuclear compounds incorporating highly anisotropic paramagnetic metal ions” within the SFB/TRR88 “3MET”. These contain {Fe^III₂Ln₂} cores encapsulated in ligand shells which are easy to tune in a “test‐bed” system. We identify the following advantages and variables in such systems: (i) the complexes are structurally simple usually with one crystallographically independent Fe^III and Ln^III, respectively. This simplifies theory and anaylsis; (ii) choosing Fe allows ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy to be used as an additional technique which can give information about oxidation levels and spin states, local moments at the iron nuclei and spin‐relaxation and, more importantly, about the anisotropy not only of the studied isotope, but also of elements interacting with this isotope; (iii) isostructural analogues with all the available (i. e. not Pm) 4 f ions can be synthesised, enabling a systematic survey of the influence of the 4 f ion on the electronic structure; (iv) this cluster type is obtained by reacting [Fe^III₃O(O₂CR)₆(L)₃](X) (X=anion, L=solvent such as H₂O, py) with an ethanolamine‐based ligand L′ and lanthanide salts. This allows to study analogues of [Fe^III₂Ln₂(μ₃‐OH)₂(L′)₂(O₂CR)₆] using the appropriate iron trinuclear starting materials. (v) the organic main ligand can be readily functionalised, facilitating a systematic investigation of the effect of organic substituents on the ligands on the magnetic properties of the complexes. We describe and discuss 34 {M^III₂Ln₂} (M=Fe or in one case Al) butterfly compounds which have been reported up to 2020. The analysis of these gives perspectives for designing new SMM systems with specific electronic and magnetic signatures

Two types of Ln2Cu2 hydroxo-trimethylacetate complexes with 0D and 1D motifs: synthetic features, structural differences, and slow magnetic relaxation

Two series of heterometallic Ln^III-Cu^II compounds containing a butterfly-like tetranuclear metal core were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction and magnetometry. The structures of the new compounds were shown to depend on the nature of the hydroxide used for the synthesis. The reactions of copper(II) and lanthanide(III) salts with Hpiv (Hpiv is trimethylacetic acid) and LiOH in a MeCN-EtOH mixture afford the molecular complexes [Ln₂Cu₂(μ₃-OH)₂(piv)₈(H₂O)₄]·4EtOH (1Ln, Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Yb), whereas the similar reactions using NaOH instead of LiOH give the 1D coordination polymers [Na₂Ln₂Cu₂(μ₃-OH)₂(piv)₁₀(EtOH)₂]·EtOH (2Ln, Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Yb). According to ac susceptibility measurements, the Dy^III-Cu^II compounds (1Dy and 2Dy) exhibit slow relaxation of magnetization indicative of single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior. In the series of Yb^III-Cu^II compounds, only complex 2Yb shows frequency-dependent out-of-phase ac susceptibility signals. This is the first reported example of carboxylate-based Yb^III-Cu^II compound displaying slow magnetic relaxation.

Evolution from a single relaxation process to two-step relaxation processes of Dy2 single-molecule magnets via the modulations of the terminal solvent ligands

To explore the influences of magnetic interactions on the relaxation dynamics of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) and to understand the relationship between single-ion relaxation and the relaxation of a molecular entity, it is very important to design dinuclear lanthanide-based SMMs with two-step relaxation processes. Here, three Dy₂ complexes of compositions [Dy₂(L)₂(NO₃)₂(MeOH)₂] (1), [Dy₂(L)₂(NO₃)₂(EtOH)₂] (2), and [Dy₂(L)₂(NO₃)₂(DMF)₂]·0.5EtOH (3) (H₂L = 2-(((2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl)imino)methyl)-4-methoxyphenol) were successfully synthesized via elaborately introducing different terminal solvent ligands. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analyses revealed that complexes 1-3 are isostructural. The two Dy^III ions of 1 and 2 both adopt D_2d symmetry, while the two Dy^III centres of 3 display D_2d and D_4d symmetries, respectively. The magnetic property studies of 1-3 indicated that all three complexes exhibit single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviours with energy barriers of 104 K for 1, 98.94 K for 2, and 76.28 K and 45.54 K for 3 under zero dc field. The target of assembling Dy₂ SMMs with two-step relaxation processes was achieved by gradually increasing the sizes of the terminal solvent ligands. Complex 3 exhibits two-step relaxation processes. Complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations were performed on 1-3 to rationalize the observed differences in the magnetic behaviour. It is found that both the angles θ between the magnetic axis and the vector connecting two Dy^III ions and the symmetries of Dy^III ions are vital factors that affect the energy barriers of 1-3. The high local symmetries of the central metals in 1 and 2 make the complexes act as SMMs with higher energy barriers, while the smaller θ angle and different symmetries of the two Dy^III ions render complex 3 as a SMM with a two-step relaxation process. This work demonstrates a new methodology for preparing SMMs with two-step relaxation processes by fine-tuning the terminal solvent ligands.

Designing asymmetric Dy2 single-molecule magnets with two-step relaxation processes by the modification of the coordination environments of Dy(iii) ions

The reaction of Dy(NO₃)₃·6H₂O and an asymmetric Schiff-base ligand H₂L afforded two asymmetric dinuclear compound. Both complexes exhibit single-molecule magnet behavior with two-step slow relaxation processes.

Regulation of magnetic relaxation behavior by replacing 3d transition metal ions in [M2Dy2] complexes containing two different organic chelating ligands

Two [MIII2DyIII2] complexes (M = Fe for 1 and Co for 2) with mixed organic ligands were obtained. Complex 2 exhibits single molecule magnet behavior with U_eff = 64.0(9) K.

A homochiral Zn–Dy heterometallic left-handed helical chain complex without chiral ligands: anion-induced assembly and multifunctional integration

The Zn₃Dy₂ pentanuclear complex evolved into a heterometallic left-handed helical chain multifunctional complex by the template action of perchlorate anion.
