Electrochemical and Electronic Properties of Transparent Coating from Highly Solution Processable Graphene Using Block Copolymer Supramolecular Assembly: Application toward Metal Ion Sensing and Resistive Switching Memory

Disposable paper electrodes for detection of changes in dopamine concentrations in rat brain homogenates

Dopamine, the main catecholamine neurotransmitter plays an important role in renal, cardiovascular, central nervous systems, and pathophysiological processes. The abnormal dopamine levels can result in neurological disorders such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, acute anxiety, neuroblastoma and also contribute to cognitive dysfunctions. Given the widespread importance of dopamine concentration levels, it is imperative to develop sensors that are able to monitor dopamine. Herein, we have developed pre-anodized disposable paper electrode modified with 1-pyrenebutyric acid, for the selective and sensitive determination of dopamine. The sensor was characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical techniques for addressing the robust formation and electrochemical activity. The modified electrode exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity towards dopamine without the common interference from ascorbic acid. The calibration plot for the dopamine sensor resulted linear range from 0.003 μM to 0.5 μM with a detection limit of 0.11 nM. The sensor's potential utility was tested by monitoring dopamine concentration changes in rat brain homogenates when subjected to neurotoxicity. The developed sensor was validated with gold-standard UV-Vis spectroscopy studies and computational studies were performed to understand the interaction between 1-pyrenebutyric acid and dopamine.

Fabrication of Nanodevices Through Block Copolymer Self-Assembly

Block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly, as a novel bottom-up patterning technique, has received increasing attention in the manufacture of nanodevices because of its significant advantages of high resolution, high throughput, low cost, and simple processing. BCP self-assembly provides a very powerful approach to constructing diverse nanoscale templates and patterns that meet large-scale manufacturing practices. For the past 20 years, the self-assembly of BCPs has been extensively employed to produce a range of nanodevices, such as nonvolatile memory, bit-patterned media (BPM), fin field-effect transistors (FinFETs), photonic nanodevices, solar cells, biological and chemical sensors, and ultrafiltration membranes, providing a variety of configurations for high-density integration and cost-efficient manufacturing. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in the fabrication of nanodevices using the templates of BCP self-assembly, and present current challenges and future opportunities.

Switching-Modulated Phase Change Memory Realized by Si-Containing Block Copolymers

The phase change memory (PCM) is one of the key enabling memory technologies for next-generation non-volatile memory device applications due to its high writing speed, excellent endurance, long retention time, and good scalability. However, the high power consumption of PCM devices caused by the high switching current from a high resistive state to a low resistive state is a critical obstacle to be resolved before widespread commercialization can be realized. Here, a useful approach to reduce the writing current of PCM, which depends strongly on the contact area between the heater electrode and active layer, by employing self-assembly process of Si-containing block copolymers (BCPs) is presented. Self-assembled insulative BCP pattern geometries can locally block the current path of the contact between a high resistive film (TiN) and a phase-change material (Ge₂ Sb₂ Te₅ ), resulting in a significant reduction of the writing current. Compared to a conventional PCM cell, the BCP-modified PCM shows excellent switching power reduction up to 1/20 given its use of self-assembled hybrid SiFe_x O_y /SiO_x dot-in-hole nanostructures. This BCP-based bottom-up process can be extended to various applications of other non-volatile memory devices, such as resistive switching memory and magnetic storage devices.

Metal-Immobilized Micellar Aggregates of a Block Copolymer from a Mixed Solvent for a SERS-Active Sensing Substrate and Versatile Dip Catalysis

Here, we have reported micellar aggregations of an amphiphilic block copolymer in mixed solvent and their subsequent use as a template for the fabrication of a very dense, tunable metal nanoparticle-decorated surface for SERS and flexible dip catalysis applications. A silver nanoparticle-immobilized layer on silicon substrates shows excellent SERS (surface-enhanced Raman scattering)-based sensing performance for model analyte rhodamine B up to 10^-6 M concentration with a well-defined calibration curve. Furthermore, a facile approach to the preparation of metal NP-immobilized BCP membranes as efficient dip catalyst for two model reactions (the reduction of nitrophenol and the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction of iodobenzene or 2,7-diiodofluorene with phenyl boronic acid) is also demonstrated. The Ag NP-decorated film exhibits high efficiency and extensive reusability in a prototype reaction such as the reduction of nitrophenol by sodium borohydride with a very high turnover number, >126 (for a single use), whereas the Pd NP-immobilized film also has a high, ∼100%, reaction yield and extensive reusability and applicable for different aromatic systems. This work provides a new platform for the design and synthesis of a functionalizable, flexible, and highly mechanically stable dip catalyst which is highly demanded in the catalytic production of value-added chemicals and environmental applications such as wastewater treatment.

A hydrogen bond cross-linked luminescent supramolecular network polymer and its application for the detection of alkyl iodides with differentiation capabilities from aromatic iodides

A luminescent supramolecular polymer consisting of poly(4-vinyl pyridine) and perylene diimide was prepared through a H-bond cross-linking strategy and used for alkyl iodide sensing.

Biomemristic Behavior for Water-Soluble Chitosan Blended with Graphene Quantum Dot Nanocomposite

Bionanocomposite has promising biomemristic behaviors for data storage inspired by a natural biomaterial matrix. Carboxylated chitosan (CCS), a water-soluble derivative of chitosan avoiding the acidic salt removal, has better biodegradability and bioactivity, and is able to absorb graphene quantum dots (GQDs) employed as charge-trapping centers. In this investigation, biomemristic devices based on water-soluble CCS:GQDs nanocomposites were successfully achieved with the aid of the spin-casting method. The promotion of binary biomemristic behaviors for Ni/CCS:GQDs/indium-tin-oxide (ITO) was evaluated for distinct weight ratios of the chemical components. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy (temperature dependence), thermogravimetric analyses and scanning electron microscopy were performed to assess the nature of the CCS:GQDs nanocomposites. The fitting curves on the experimental data further confirmed that the conduction mechanism might be attributed to charge trapping-detrapping in the CCS:GQDs nanocomposite film. Advances in water-soluble CCS-based electronic devices would open new avenues in the biocompatibility and integration of high-performance biointegrated electronics.

Reorientation of Polymers in an Applied Electric Field for Electrochemical Sensors

This mini review investigates the relationship and interactions of polymers under an applied electric field (AEF) for sensor applications. Understanding how and why polymers are reoriented and manipulated by under an AEF is essential for future growth in polymer-based electrochemical sensors. Examples of polymers that can be manipulated in an AEF for sensor applications are provided. Current methods of monitoring polymer reorientation will be described, but new techniques are needed characterize polymer response to various AEF stimuli. The unique and reproducible stimuli response of polymers elicited by an AEF has significant potential for growth in the sensing community.
