Kinetics of Catalytic Wet Peroxide Oxidation of Phenolics in Olive Oil Mill Wastewaters over Copper Catalysts

Treatment of Oil Sands’ Mature Fine Tailings Using Advanced Wet Air Oxidation (WAO) and Wet Air Peroxide Oxidation (WAPO)

Mature Fine Tailings (MFT) generated from oil sands processing represent a growing environmental issue, as settling of these tailings’ emulsion can take decades, increasing the risk of the toxic material’s leaching if left untreated. This study uses advanced wet air oxidation (WAO) and wet air peroxide oxidation (WAPO) to break down the MFT emulsions for faster settling. Three oxidation time intervals (5, 15, and 30 min) were investigated using compressed air and hydrogen peroxide in a pressurized vessel of 3.1–3.4 MPa internal pressure and at 200 °C temperature. The results showed that the WAO process was able to break the MFT emulsion, release trapped water, and recover residual bitumen. The WAPO process was much faster in breaking the emulsion; however, the presence of extra oxidants also resulted in the degradation of the residual bitumen. The 5 min oxidation time interval was found to be sufficient in breaking emulsions, separating water from soil particles, and recovering residual bitumen under the tested conditions. The oxidation process proved to be efficient by degrading all inorganic carbon, whereas 70% of the dissolved organic carbon in the recovered water after oxidation comprised only low molecular weight biodegradable hydrocarbons. Therefore, the WAO process was capable of breaking the MFT emulsions and allowing a faster settling of these tailings, with the added benefit of recovering residual bitumen.

Accelerating Microbial Activity of Soil Aquifer Treatment by Hydrogen Peroxide

Soil aquifer treatment (SAT), as a gravity-based wastewater reuse process, is limited by oxygen availability to the microbial community in the soil. Using oxygen from enzymatic degradation of H2O2 to generate hyper-oxygen conditions can exceed solubility limitations associated with aeration, but little is known about the effect of hyper-oxygen conditions on the microbial community and the dominant bio-reactions. This study examined the impact of H2O2 addition on the community structure and process performance, along with SAT depth. Overall, two soil columns were incrementally fed synthetic secondary effluents to simulate infiltration through SAT. The experimental column received 14 mg/L hydrogen peroxide to double the level of natural oxygen available. The microbial kinetics of nitrifiers and heterotrophs were evaluated. We found that all of the H2O2 was degraded within the top 10 cm of the column, accompanied by a higher removal of COD (23 ± 0.25%) and ammonia (31 ± 3%) in comparison to the reference column. Higher nitrogen removal (23 ± 0.04%) was obtained for the whole process using H2O2. Analysis of nitrifiers indicated that ammonia-oxidizing bacteria were most influenced, obtaining higher concentration and abundance when exposed to H2O2. DNA sequencing analysis of samples exposed to H2O2 revealed significant community structure and diversity differences among heterotrophs. This study shows that not only aerobic, but also anoxic, microbial activity and process performance in a SAT system could be accelerated in existing infrastructure with H2O2, which could significantly decrease the associated environmental footprint.

Olive Mill Wastewater Valorization through Steam Reforming Using Multifunctional Reactors: Challenges of the Process Intensification

Olive oil mill wastewater (OMW) is a polluting stream derived from the production of olive oil and is a source of environmental pollution; this is relevant in many countries around the world, but particularly in all the Mediterranean region where major producers are located. In this effluent, several pollutants are present—namely, sugars, fatty acids, and polyphenols, among others. Nowadays, to reduce the pollutant load, several treatment techniques are applied, but these technologies have numerous cost and efficiency problems. For this reason, the steam reforming of the OMW (OMWSR) presents as a good alternative, because this process decreases the pollutant load of the OMW and simultaneously valorizes the waste with the production of green H2, which is consistent with the perspective of the circular economy. Currently, the OMWSR is an innovative treatment alternative in the scientific field and with high potential. In the last few years, some groups have studied the OMWSR and used innovative reactor configurations, aiming to improve the process’ effectiveness. In this review, the OMW treatment/valorization processes, the last developments on catalysis for OMWSR (or steam reforming of similar species present in the effluent), as well as the last advances on OMWSR performed in multi-functional reactors are addressed.

Photo-Fenton Oxidation of Methyl Orange Dye Using South African Ilmenite Sands as a Catalyst

In this study, the viability of South African ilmenite sands as a catalyst in the photo-Fenton-like degradation of methyl orange (MO) dye was investigated. The mineralogy and other properties of the material were characterized. Complete decolorization occurred under acidic conditions (pH < 4) in the presence of ilmenite and H2O2. Light irradiation accelerated the rate of reaction. Parameter optimization revealed that a pH of 2.5, UVB irradiation, 2 g/L catalyst loading, and a hydrogen peroxide concentration of 1.0 mM were required. Under these conditions, complete decolorization was observed after 45 min. Degradation kinetics were best described by the pseudo-first order (PFO) model. Rate constants of 0.095 and 0.034 min−1 were obtained for 5 and 20 mg/L MO concentrations, respectively. A 37% total organic carbon removal was observed after 60 min. This suggests a stepwise MO degradation pathway with intermediate formation rather than complete mineralization. Although iron leaching was detected, the mineralogy of the catalyst recovered after the reaction was similar to the fresh catalyst.

Effect of copper ion-exchange on catalytic wet peroxide oxidation of phenol over ZSM-5 membrane

Cu-ZSM-5 zeolite membrane catalysts prepared by ion exchange method were synthesized on paper-like sintered stainless fibers (PSSFs) with three-dimensional net structure for the catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) of phenol in structured fixed bed reactor. The experimental results exhibited that the BET of optimal catalyst was 165 m²/g with the ion exchange concentration of 0.1 M and time of 24 h, respectively, at temperature of 40 °C and one time ion exchange. The FT-IR results illustrated that band intensity was the lowest, and original Cu⁺ species and lattice oxygen were predominant in optimal catalyst according to the XPS results. Then, the effects of ion exchange concentration, time, temperature and times on catalytic performance of phenol were also investigated in structured fixed bed. It was found that the phenol was completely removed, TOC conversion (around 76.6%), high CO₂ selectivity (about 78%) and low copper leaching rate (about 30%) were achieved with only 1.91 wt% copper loading over the optimal catalyst. Finally, a reasonable reaction mechanism occurring in the presence of H₂O₂ for CWPO of phenol was proposed by analyzing the HPLC results, which indicated Fenton-like reactions were mainly based on the HO· production by catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide with Cu⁺ species.

Fitting Biochars and Activated Carbons from Residues of the Olive Oil Industry as Supports of Fe- Catalysts for the Heterogeneous Fenton-Like Treatment of Simulated Olive Mill Wastewater

A series of biochars and activated carbons (ACs) was prepared combining carbonization and physical or chemical activation of cheap and abundant residues of the olive oil industry. These materials were used as Fe-support to develop low-cost catalysts for the heterogeneous Fenton-like oxidation of simulated olive mill wastewater (OMW), the highly pollutant effluent generated by this agroindustry. Commercial ACs were also used as reference. All catalysts prepared were extensively characterized and results related with their performances in the catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO). Results showed a linear relationship of the textural properties of the catalysts with the adsorptive and catalytic performance, as well as the preferential adsorption and degradation of some phenolic compounds (caffeic and gallic acids) by specific interactions with the catalysts’ surface. Despite the best performance of catalysts developed using commercial supports, those prepared from agro-industrial residues present some advantages, including a smaller catalyst deactivation by iron leaching. CWPO results show that catalysts from physically activated olive stones are the most promising materials, reaching total organic carbon and toxicity reductions of 35% and 60%, respectively, as well an efficient use of H₂O₂, comparable with those obtained using commercial supports. This approach showed that the optimized treatment of this type of residues will allow their integration in the circular economic process of the olive oil production.
