Fabrication of an Active Electronic Device Using a Hetero-bimetallic Coordination Polymer

Synthesis, Molecular, and Supramolecular Structures of Two Azide-Bridged Cd(II) and Cu(II) Coordination Polymers

Two 1D coordination polymers were synthesized by reaction of two ligands, 2-amino-4-picoline (2A4Pic) and quinoline-6-carboxylic acid (Qu-6-COOH) with two metal (II) nitrate (M = Cd and Cu) in the presence of azide as a linker. The synthesized metal complexes [Cd(2A4Pic)2(N3)2]n; (1) and [Cu(Qu-6-COO)(N3)(H2O)]n; (2) were isolated in single crystals and their X-ray structures revealed a 1D polymeric structure. Due to symmetry considerations, the asymmetric formula is half a [Cd(2A4Pic)2(N3)2] unit for 1 and one [Cu(Qu-6-COO)(N3)(H2O)] unit for 2. In complex 1, the Cd(II) is hexa-coordinated with two 2A4Pic molecules and four μ(1,1) azide units. Hence, the CdN6 coordination environment has a slightly distorted octahedral geometry. In 2, the Cu(II) is hexa-coordinated with three different ligands (Qu-6-COO¯, H2O and μ(1,1) N3¯) where all are connectors between the crystallographically related Cu(II) sites. Additionally, complex 2 distorted CuN2O4 octahedral geometry. In both complexes, the polymer arrays are connected by N…H hydrogen bonds and π–π stacking interactions. Based on Hirshfeld analysis, the percentages of N…H contacts are 43.1 and 27.4% for 1 and 2, respectively, while %C...C are 5.6 and 9.3%, respectively. Analysis of Cu-N, Cu-O, and Cd-N bonds using DFT calculations showed predominantly closed-shell coordination interactions with little covalent characters. Additionally, the negatively charged ligand groups were found to compensate the positive charge of the central metal ion to a larger extent than the electrically neutral ligands.

Synthesis, spectroscopic findings and crystal engineering of Pb(ii)-Salen coordination polymers, and supramolecular architectures engineered by σ-hole/spodium/tetrel bonds: a combined experimental and theoretical investigation

Spontaneous self-assembly is one of the available synthetic routes to achieve structurally versatile and unique crystal complexes with selected metal-ligand combinations in the spirit of pseudohalides. In this endeavour, we designed a novel 1D coordination polymer (CP), [(Cd)(Pb)(L)(η¹-NCS)(η¹-SCN)] _n (1), using a compartmental Salen ligand (H₃L) in the presence of NaSCN. The characterization of the CP was accomplished using several spectroscopic techniques: MALDI-TOF, PXRD, SEM, EDX mapping, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The CP crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2₁/c with Z = 4. SCXRD reveals Cd(ii) and Pb(ii) metal ions fulfilled distorted square pyramidal and hemi-directed coordination spheres. Cd(ii) is placed in the inner N₂O₂ and heavier Pb(ii) in the outer O₄ compartments of the de-protonated form of the ligand [L]^2-. Supramolecular interactions in the intricate crystal structure produced attractive molecular architectures of the compound. The flexible aliphatic -OH pendent group coordinates with the Pb(ii) ions. This unique binding further elevates the supramolecular crystal topographies. The supramolecular interactions were authenticated by Hirshfeld surface analysis (HSA). The observation of the recurring unconventional tetrel bonds was rationalized by DFT calculations and surface plots of molecular electrostatic potential (MEP). In the 1D polymeric chain in the complex, the O-atom of the -OH groups shows a tetrel bonding interaction with the Pb atom. We have found that the combination of QTAIM/NCI and QTAIM/ELF plots helps reveal the nature of these contacts. Moreover, the QTAIM/ELF plot determines the donor-acceptor interaction between the O-atom and the Pb atom, establishing the σ-hole. Agreeably, the σ-hole interaction also helps Pb(ii) serve as a Lewis acid in the complex. Finally, spodium and tetrel bonds are formed, possible thanks to a hemi-directional coordination sphere of the Pb atoms in the polymer described.

Phenoxo-bridged dinuclear mixed valence cobalt(III/II) complexes with reduced Schiff base ligands: synthesis, characterization, band gap measurements and fabrication of Schottky barrier diodes

Two homometallic class-I dinuclear mixed valence cobalt complexes, [(N3)CoIIIL1(μ-C6H4(NO2)CO2)CoII(N3)] (1) and [(N3)CoIIIL2(μ-C6H4(NO2)CO2)CoII(N3)] (2), have been synthesized using multisite N2O4 coordination ligands, H2L1 {where H2L1 = (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediyl)bis(iminomethylene)bis(6-methoxyphenol) and H2L2 = (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediyl)bis(iminomethylene)bis(6-ethoxyphenol)}. Each complex has been structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and spectral analysis. Both the cobalt centers in these dinuclear complexes adopt a distorted-octahedral geometry, where the cobalt(iii) center resides at the inner N2O2 cavity and the cobalt(ii) center resides at the outer O4 cavity of the reduced Schiff base. Both of them show good electrical conductivity, which has been rationalized by band gap measurements. The band gap in the solid state has been determined by experimental and DFT calculations and it confirms that each of the two complexes behaves as a semiconductor. The space-charge-limited current (SCLC) theory is employed to evaluate the charge transport parameters such as effective carrier mobility and transit time for both complexes. The difference in the conductivity values of the complexes may be correlated with the strengths of extended supramolecular interactions in the complexes. Bader's quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules (QTAIM) is applied extensively to get quantitative and qualitative insights into the physical nature of weak non-covalent interactions. In addition, the non-covalent interaction reduced density gradient (NCI-RDG) methods well support the presence of such non-covalent intermolecular interactions.

Theoretical insights on the encapsulated hydronium ion mediated supramolecular assembly of nickel(ii) Schiff base complexes: strong hydrogen bonding interaction due to charge transfer from the lone pair of oxygen to the antibonding orbital of the O–H bond

Strong hydrogen bonding interactions are observed in a hydronium ion trapped nickel(ii) Schiff base complex. The energetics regarding these interactions which provide the stability to the supramolecular structure are analysed by DFT calculations.

Synthesis of an electrically conductive square planar copper(ii) complex and its utilization in the fabrication of a photosensitive Schottky diode device and DFT study

A naphthalene based square planar copper(ii) complex shows significant C–H⋯π interactions to form a supramolecular chain structure. The complex shows efficient charge transport and reveals Schottky barrier diode behavior.

Methylene spacer regulated variation in molecular and crystalline architectures of cobalt(iii) complexes with reduced Schiff base ligands: a combined experimental and theoretical study

Two heteronuclear cobalt(iii)/sodium complexes, [(H₂O)₂Co(H₂L¹)Na(N₃)₂] (1) and (μ-N₃)₂[(N₃)Co(H₂L²)Na]₂ (2) have been synthesized by the reaction of two compartmental reduced Schiff bases, H₂L¹ [(1,2-propanediyl)bis(iminomethylene)bis(6-ethoxyphenol)] and H₂L² [(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediyl)bis(iminomethylene)bis(6-ethoxyphenol)], with cobalt(ii) nitrate hexahydrate in methanol. Structures of both the complexes have been confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In each complex, cobalt(iii) is located in the inner N₂O₂ compartment and sodium is placed in the outer O₂O'₂ compartment of the respective ligands. In complex 1, the saturated five-membered chelate ring assumes a half-chair conformation, thereby facilitating the anti-orientations of two N-H bonds, which in turn favours the formation of very strong hydrogen bonds forming an infinite one-dimensional assembly. Formation of this one-dimensional chain is also supported by C-Hπ (arene) interactions. On the other hand, the best hydrogen bond donor NH groups are in syn disposition (as the saturated chelate ring is six-membered and assumes a chair conformation) and do not participate in the crystal packing in complex 2. However, very strong C-Hπ(N₃) interactions have been established in complex 2, where the π-system of the bridging azide ligand participates as the π-donor. A search in the Cambridge structural database (CSD) has also been carried out to investigate the abundance and directionality of the interaction using different pseudohalides. Energies of all these supramolecular interactions were estimated by DFT calculations including Grimme's dispersion correction and characterized by the NCI plot index computational tool.

A tetranuclear nickel(ii)/lead(ii) complex has been synthesized and characterized. The complex based device behaves as a Schottky diode. The charge transfer kinetics of the complex is enhanced after light soaking.
