In Situ Generation of Red-Emissive AIEgens from Commercial Sources for Nondoped OLEDs

Effect of luminescent materials on the aquatic macrophyte Vallisneria natans and periphytic biofilm

Luminescent materials can adjust the spectrum of light energy utilization by plants. However, current research on the effects of luminescent materials on aquatic plants and periphytic biofilms is limited. This study investigated the effects of the luminescent materials 4-(di-p-tolylamino) benzaldehyde-A (DTB-A) and 4-(di-p-tolylamino) benzaldehyde-M (DTB-M) on the submerged macrophyte Vallisneria natans (V. natans) and periphytic biofilm. Result demonstrated that low concentrations of DTB (0.1 μM) significantly promoted the growth and photosynthetic rate of V. natans. In terms of enzyme activity, exposure to a higher concentration of DTB (10 μM) increased the activities of peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). A combination of DTB-A and DTB-M treatment significantly changed the V. natans morphology and physiological characteristics, reducing the thickness of the cell wall and subsequently, promoting protein accumulation in leaves. There was no difference in the removal of ammonia or phosphate by V. natans at the 0.1 μM concentration, and the removal of ammonia and phosphate by V. natans decreased significantly as the concentration of luminescent material increased. A total of 3563 OTUs were identified in the biofilm community. The microbial community was dominated by Pseudomonas and Fusobacteria. Furthermore, results showed that an obvious decrease in diversity in the DTB-A and DTB-M mixed treatment group. In addition, the migratory aggregation of DTB molecules in plants was observed by fluorescence imaging. Overall, these findings extend our understanding of the mechanism of effect of luminescent materials on submerged macrophytes and their periphytic microorganisms.

Creation of High-Quality Deep-Blue AIE Emitter with a Crossed Long-Short Axis Structure for Efficient and Versatile OLEDs

Developing deep-blue emitters for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) is critical but challenging, which requires a good balance between light color, exciton utilization, and photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of solid film. Herein, a high-quality deep-blue emitter, abbreviated 2TriPE-CzMCN, is designed by introducing an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) group into a crossed long-short axis (CLSA) skeleton. Theoretical and experimental investigations reveal that the CLSA molecular design can achieve a balance between deep-blue emission and triplet-excitons utilization, while the high PLQY of the solid film resulting from the AIE feature helps to improve the performance of OLEDs. Consequently, when 2TriPE-CzMCN is used as the emitting dopant, the OLED exhibits a deep-blue emission at 430 nm with a record-high maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 8.84%. When 2TriPE-CzMCN serves as the host material, the sensitized monochrome orange and two-color white OLEDs (WOLEDs) realize high EL performances that exceed the efficiency limit of conventional fluorescent OLEDs. Moreover, high-performance three-color WOLEDs with a color rendering index (CRI) exceeding 90 and EQE up to 18.08% are achieved by using 2TriPE-CzMCN as the blue-emitting source. This work demonstrates that endowing CLSA molecule with AIE feature is an effective strategy for developing high-quality deep-blue emitters, and high-performance versatile OLEDs can be realized through rational device engineering.

Unlocking Diverse π-Bond Enrichment Frameworks by the Synthesis and Conversion of Boronated Phenyldiethynylethylenes

The π-bond enrichment frameworks not only serve as a crucial building block in organic synthesis but also assume a pivotal role in the fields of materials science, biomedicine, photochemistry, and other related disciplines owing to their distinctive structural characteristics. The incorporation of various substituents into the C═C double bonds of tetrasubstituted alkenes is currently a highly significant research area. However, the synthesis of tetrasubstituted alkenes with diverse substituents on double bonds poses a significant challenge in achieving stereoselectivity. Here, we reported an efficient and convergent route of Cu-catalyzed borylalkynylation of both symmetrical and unsymmetrical 1,3-diynes, B2pin2, and acetylene bromide to the construction of boronated phenyldiethynylethylene (BPDEE) derivatives with excellent chemo-, stereo-, and regioselectivities. BPDEE derivatives could transform into novel tetrasubstituted organic π-conjugated gem-diphenyldiethynylethylene (DPDEE), vinylphenyldiethynylethylene (VPDEE), and phenyltriethynylethylene (PTEE) derivatives by a stepwise process, which provides a flexible platform for the synthesis of complex π-bond enrichment frameworks that were difficult to synthesize by previous methods. The initial optical characterization revealed that the synthesized molecules exhibited aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties, which further establishes the groundwork for future applications and enriches and advances the field of functional π-conjugated frameworks research.

Wavelength-tunable AIEgens based on 6-methoxy-2-naphthaldehyde: AIE behavior and bioimaging performance

AIE-active dyes have lately received considerable attention due to their versatile applications, especially in bioimaging and theranostics. Herein, 6-methoxy-2-naphthaldehyde was used to construct fluorophores through Knoevenagel condensation with various active methylene compounds. All the obtained compounds showed varying degrees of AIE characteristics. It was worth mentioning that the condensation product of 6-methoxy-2-naphthaldehyde and malononitrile (MOP-e) exhibited a large redshift and a large Stokes shift when forming aggregates. Furthermore, it showed an ultra-wide AIE band which enabled it to be utilized for dual-channel bioimaging. The single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis showed that two different molecular arrangement modes, the monomolecular stacking and the discrete π-π dimeric stacking, existed in the aggregates of MOP-e. The discrete dimeric stacking leads to excimer-induced enhanced emission, which results in its unique AIE behavior. Moreover, MOP-e displayed an excellent bioimaging performance in living cells in green channel and in red channel respectively.

Aggregation-induced emission luminogens for augmented photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is promising in sequestrating carbon dioxide and providing food and biofuel. Recent findings have shown that luminescent materials could shift the wavelength of light to a more usable range for augmented photosynthesis. Among them, aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) have advantages of efficient light conversion, high biocompatibility, large Stokes' shift, and so on. In this perspective, emerging reports of augmented photosynthesis with luminescent materials, especially the AIEgens are included. We emphasized the spectra shift characteristics, material formation, and sustainable development based on augmented photosynthesis.

A Fluorescent Linear Conjugated Polymer Constructed from Pillararene and Anthracene

Over the past few years, conjugated polymers (CPs) have aroused much attention owing to their rigid conjugated structures, which can perform well in light harvesting and energy transfer and offer great potential in materials chemistry. In this article, we fabricate a new luminescent linear CP p(P[5](OTf)₂-co-9,10-dea) via the Sonogashira coupling of 9,10-diethynylanthracene and trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride (OTf) modified pillar[5]arene, generating enhanced yellow-green fluorescence emission at around 552 nm. The reaction condition was screened to get a deeper understanding of this polymerization approach, resulting in an excellent yield as high as 92% ultimately. Besides the optical properties, self-assembly behaviors of the CP in low/high concentrations were studied, where interesting adjustable morphologies from tube to sheet were observed. In addition, the fluorescence performance and structural architecture can be disturbed by the host–guest reorganization between the host CP and the guest adiponitrile, suggesting great potential of this CP material in the field of sensing and detection.

Restriction of Conformation Transformation in Excited State: An Aggregation-Induced Emission Building Block Based on Stable Exocyclic C=N Group

The development of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) building block and deciphering its luminescence mechanism are of great significance. Here a feasible strategy for the construction of AIE unit based on E-Z isomerization (EZI) of exocyclic C=N double bond is proposed. Taking [1,2,4]thiadiazole[4,3-a]pyridine (TZP) derivative as an example, its aryl-substituted derivative (TZPP) shows obvious AIE character. The analysis of spectral data and theoretical calculations indicates that fast structural relaxation of TZPP in the emissive state plays a key role in a low fluorescence quantum yield in dilute solution, which should be caused by the small energy gap between locally excited (LE) state and twisted intramolecular charge transfer state. When in solid state, the bright emission with LE state characteristic reappears due to the large shift barrier of geometry transformation. As a potential building block for AIEgens with special heterocyclic structure, these findings would open up opportunities for developing various functional materials.

ICT and AIE Characteristics Two Cyano-Functionalized Probes and Their Photophysical Properties, DFT Calculations, Cytotoxicity, and Cell Imaging Applications

Two probes, AIE-1 and AIE-2, were synthesized to investigate the effect of substitutional functional group on aggregation (aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) or aggregation-induced emission (AIE)) and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) behavior as well as on the cell imaging aspect. The yellow-color non-substituted probe AIE-1 showed weak charge-transfer absorption and an emission band at 377 nm and 432 nm, whereas the yellowish-orange color substituted probe AIE-2 showed a strong charge-transfer absorption and an emission band at 424 nm and 477 nm in THF solvent. The UV-Vis studies of AIE-1 and AIE-2 in THF and THF with different water fractions showed huge absorption changes in AIE-2 with high water fractions due to its strong aggregation behavior, but no such noticeable absorption changes were observed for AIE-1. Interestingly, the fluorescence intensity of AIE-1 at 432 nm gradually decreased with increasing water fractions and became almost non-emissive at 90% water. However, the monomer-type emission of AIE-2 at 477 nm was shifted to 584 nm with a 6-fold increase in fluorescence intensity in THF-H2O (1:9, v/v) solvent mixtures due to the restriction of intramolecular rotation on aggregation in high water fractions. This result indicates that the probe AIE-1 shows ACQ and probe AIE-2 shows AIE behaviors in THF-H2O solvent mixtures. Furthermore, the emission spectra of AIE-1 and AIE-2 were carried out in different solvent and with different concentrations to see the solvent- or concentration-dependent aggregation behavior. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments were also conducted to assess the morphology and particle size of two probes before and after aggregation. Both of the probes, AIE-1 and AIE-2, showed less toxicity on HeLa cells and were suitable for cell imaging studies. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation was also carried out to confirm the ICT process from an electron-rich indole moiety to an electron-deficient cyano-phenyl ring of AIE-1 or AIE-2.

Albumin tailoring fluorescence and photothermal conversion effect of near-infrared-II fluorophore with aggregation-induced emission characteristics

Fluorophores with donor-acceptor-donor groups with the emission spanning the second near-infrared window (NIR-II) have recently received great attention for biomedical application. Yet, the mechanism underlying the equilibrium between fluorescence (radiative decay) and photothermal effect (non-radiative decay) of these fluorophores remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate that a lipophilic NIR-II fluorophore, BPBBT, possesses both twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics. Human serum albumin (HSA) binds to BPBBT, which changes the planarity of the fluorophore and restricts its intramolecular rotation. The binding results in alteration to the equilibrium between AIE and TICT state of BPBBT, tailoring its fluorescence and photothermal efficiency. Under the guidance of intraoperative NIR-II fluorescence image, the prepared HSA-bound BPBBT nanoparticles delineate primary orthotopic mouse colon tumor and metastatic lesions with dimensions as small as 0.5 mm × 0.3 mm, and offer photothermal ablation therapy with optimized timing, dosing and area of the laser irradiation.
