One-Pot Synthesis of Pd-Based Ternary Pd@CdS@TiO2 Nanoclusters via a Solvothermal Route and Their Catalytic Reduction Efficiency toward Toxic Hexavalent Chromium

Sustainable Bifunctional ZnO Composites For Synchronous Adsorption And Reduction Of Cr(VI) to Cr(III)

In decentralized systems, adsorption-based strategies offer inherent advantages for the treatment of drinking water contaminated with oxoanion. However, these strategies only involve phase transfer and not the transformation to an innocuous state. The requirement for an after-treatment procedure to manage the hazardous adsorbent further complicates the process. Here we formulate green bifunctional ZnO composites for the simultaneous adsorption and photoreduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Three non-metal-ZnO composites based on raw charcoal- ZnO, modified charcoal- ZnO charcoal, and chicken feather- ZnO were prepared from the combination of ZnO with non-metal precursors. The composites were characterized and both the adsorption and photocatalyst features were studied, separately, in synthetic feedwater and groundwater contaminated with Cr(VI). The adsorption efficiency of the composites for Cr(VI) at different initial concentrations, under solar illumination without hole scavenger, and in the dark without hole scavenger, were appreciable (between 48 and 71%), and initial concentration dependent. The photoreduction efficiencies (PE%) of all the composites were > 70%, irrespective of the initial Cr(VI) concentration. The occurrence of the transformation of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) during the photoredox reaction was established. Whereas the initial solution pH value, organic load, and ionic strength had no influence on the PE (%) of all the composites, CO32- and NO3- had negative impacts. The PE (%) values of the different ZnO-composites obtained for both the synthetic feedwater and groundwater systems were comparable.

Recent applications of nanoparticles in organic transformations

A variation in the size of metal nanoparticles leads to a difference in their properties. As the size of metal nanoparticles decreases, the surface area increases which leads to an increase in the reactivity of metal nanoparticles. Metals like Au, Ag, Pd, and Pt have interesting properties when used in nanometric dimensions. They function efficiently in significant industrial processes as electrocatalysts and photocatalysts in various organic reactions. Recently, the green biosynthesis of nanoparticles has attracted the attention of researchers. With environmental pollution rising over the past few decades, metal nanoparticle catalysts could be the key to subdue the toxic effects. Being versatile, they can be used to degrade pollutants, develop solar cells, convert toxic nitroaromatic compounds, significantly reduce CO₂ emissions per unit of energy, and many more. Owing to their unique properties, nanoparticles have wide applications in biomedicine, for example, gold cages are promising agents for cancer diagnosis and therapy. Transition metal-oxide nanoparticles have been considered one of the best supercapacitor electrodes with high electrochemical performance. In this review, we have summarised fundamental concepts of metal nanoparticles over the last decade's main emphasis from 2010 to 2021. It focuses on the exceptional use of these nanocatalysts in various organic reactions. Additionally, we have also discussed the utility of these reactions and their crucial role in solving the problems of today. Through this article, we hope to provide the necessary framework needed to further advance the applications of metal nanoparticles as catalysts.

Layered Molybdenum (Meta)phosphate for Photoreduction of Hexavalent Chromium and Degradation of Methylene Blue under Sunlight Radiance

Noble metal, semiconductor, or metal-free nanomaterials have shown promising applicability as potential photocatalyst materials. A one-step process has been established for the synthesis of layered molybdenum (meta)phosphate [MoO₂(PO₃)₂] using a solvothermal method. The nanopowders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), surface area analysis (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET)), electron spin resonance (ESR), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Through this study, we demonstrate the use of MoO₂(PO₃)₂ as a photocatalyst for wastewater treatment. The photoreduction of toxic Cr⁶⁺ to Cr³⁺ by layered molybdenum (meta)phosphate is investigated using formic acid as a scavenger. This catalyst has also been used for photodegrading organic dyes like methylene blue. MoO₂(PO₃)₂ has been shown to complete photoreduction of toxic Cr⁶⁺ to Cr³⁺ in 6 min and achieved 78% degradation efficiency for methylene blue in 36 min. The reactive species trapping experiments revealed that the key active species like O₂ ^•-, ^•OH, and h⁺ can exist and play an important role in methylene blue photodegradation.

Metallic nanoparticles for catalytic reduction of toxic hexavalent chromium from aqueous medium: A state-of-the-art review

The ever increasing concentration of toxic and carcinogenic hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) in various environmental mediums including water-bodies due to anthropogenic activities with rapid civilization and industrialization have become the major issue throughout the globe during last few decades. Therefore, developing new strategies for the treatment of Cr(VI) contaminated wastewaters are in great demand and have become a topical issue in academia and industry. To date, various techniques have been used for the remediation of Cr(VI) contaminated wastewaters including solvent extraction, adsorption, catalytic reduction, membrane filtration, biological treatment, coagulation, ion exchange and photo-catalytic reduction. Among these methods, the transformation of highly toxic Cr(VI) to benign Cr(III) catalyzed by metallic nanoparticles (M-NPs) with reductant has gained increasing attention in the past few years, and is considered to be an effective approach due to the superior catalytic performance of M-NPs. Thus, it is a timely topic to review this emerging technique for Cr(VI) reduction. Herein, recent development in synthesis of M-NPs based non-supported, supported, mono-, bi- and ternary M-NPs catalysts, their characterization and performance for the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) are reviewed. The role of supporting host to stabilize the M-NPs and leading to enhance the reduction of Cr(VI) are discussed. The Cr(VI) reduction mechanism, kinetics, and factors affecting the kinetics are overviewed to collect the wealthy kinetics data. Finally, the challenges and perspective in Cr(VI) reduction catalyzed by M-NPs are proposed. We believe that this review will assist the researchers who are working to develop novel M-NPs catalysts for the reduction of Cr(VI).

Treated activated carbon as a metal-free catalyst for effectively catalytic reduction of toxic hexavalent chromium

In this work, activated carbon treated in N₂ atmosphere, as a non-metallic catalyst, exhibits excellent catalytic performance in reduction of Cr (VI) to Cr (III) using HCOOH as the reducing agent at room temperature. A series of characterizations and control experiments were carried out to deduce the possible reaction mechanism. The results showed that the improved catalytic performance can be attributed to the enhanced graphitization degree and basic sites such as pyrone-like, which favor electron transferring and activation of reactant. The reaction rate constant observed herein for the C-800 was 22 and 6 times more than that for C-0 and Pd/C catalyst, respectively. In addition, C-800 showed good recycle performance, and no loss of activity was observed after 5 cycles. This study broadens the application of nonmetallic catalyst and provides an easy-available and cost-effective catalytic material for removing toxic Cr (VI).

Nonprecious bimetallic (Mo, Fe)-N/C nanostructures loaded on PVDF membrane for toxic CrVI reduction from water

Nonprecious bimetallic molybdenum and iron embedded into N-doped carbon (MoFe-NC) hybrids were designed and fabricated by pyrolysis of mixed precursors and then immobilized on poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) films via a phase inversion process to obtain novel catalytic membranes (MoFe-NC@PVDF) for toxic Cr^VI reduction. The catalytic membranes are highly active for aqueous Cr^VI reduction using formic acid (FA) as a sacrificial electron donor under mild conditions. The results demonstrated that the parameters of synthesis process can efficiently adjust the morphology and textural properties of the as-synthesized MoFe-NC@PVDF membrane, and thus have a significant impact on the catalytic behavior. Cr^VI reduction rates significantly increased with increasing FA concentrations (0.234-0.936 M) and reaction temperature (5-35℃), but declined with the increase of Cr^VI concentrations (5-40 mg/L) and pH values of solution (1.87-4.62). Mo-N_x, Fe-N_x, and C-N_x are the active sites, boosting the dissociation of FA molecules into active H* species for effective catalytic reduction of Cr^VI. The catalytic PVDF membrane exhibited distinct porous structure and numerous interaction sites, which not only stabilized metallic nanoparticles, but also promoted mass transfer across the membrane. This cost-effective catalytic membrane provides a new approach toward the treatment of Cr^VI-containing water.

Facile strategy for the fabrication of noble metal/ZnS composites with enhanced photocatalytic activities

The introduction of noble metal nanoparticles to photocatalysts can effectively improve the separation efficiency of the photogenerated electron–holes. Therefore, noble metal/ZnS composites were synthesized using a low-temperature solid-phase chemical method with sodium borohydride as the reducing agent. The characterization results showed that the noble metal/ZnS composites have been successfully obtained and that the noble metals were distributed on the surface of ZnS. The catalytic results suggested that the composites exhibited improved activity after introduction of noble metals, which can be attributed to the rapid migration of carriers and the enhancement of the light absorption, mainly owing to the tight combination between the ZnS and noble metals and the plasmon resonance effect of the noble metals. The catalytic mechanism was explored by using photoluminescence spectroscopy, photocurrent spectra, valence band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS-VB) spectra and capture agent experiments, and a possible mechanism was proposed. This work provides a new strategy for the high-volume synthesis of noble metal-based composite photocatalysts, which could be helpful for sustainable development.

Preparation of CdS-TiO2-Based Palladium Heterogeneous Nanocatalyst by Solvothermal Route and Its Catalytic Activity for Reduction of Nitroaromatic Compounds

In this study, bare CdS nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by solvothermal method using CdCl₂(3-methylbenzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone)₂ as a single-source molecular precursor in the presence of ethylene glycol. Further, these CdS NPs were used for the preparation of binary (CdS-TiO₂) and ternary (CdS-TiO₂/Pd) heterogeneous nanocatalysts. Characterization of the as-prepared nanocatalysts has been carried out using different techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and photoluminescence studies. The peak observed at 2θ = 39.5° in XRD confirms the successful doping of noble metal (Pd) on the surface of CdS-TiO₂ nanocatalyst, which is well supported by Raman analysis. From FESEM and TEM analyses, mixed morphology has been observed and elemental composition was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy elemental mapping. Furthermore, the as-prepared bare CdS NPs, binary CdS-TiO₂, and ternary CdS-TiO₂/Pd heterogeneous nanocatalysts were used for the reductive transformation of various nitroaromatic compounds to their corresponding aromatic amines at room temperature. It has been observed that among all of the catalysts, ternary CdS-TiO₂/Pd heterogeneous nanocatalyst has excellent catalytic property to reduce all nitroaromatic compounds in very short time span.
