Dynamic Plasmonic Platform To Investigate the Correlation between Far-Field Optical Response and SERS Signal of Analytes

Tunable metalensing based on plasmonic resonators embedded on thermosresponsive hydrogel

Metalenses of adjustable power and ultrathin flat zoom lens system have emerged as a promising and key photonic device for integrated optics and advanced reconfigurable optical systems. Nevertheless, realizing an active metasurface retaining lensing functionality in the visible frequency regime has not been fully explored to design reconfigurable optical devices. Here, we present a focal tunable metalens and intensity tunable metalens in the visible frequency regime through the control of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic behavior of freestanding thermoresponsive hydrogel. The metasurface is comprised of plasmonic resonators embedded on the top of hydrogel which serves as dynamically reconfigurable metalens. It is shown that the focal length can be continuously tuned by adjusting the phase transition of hydrogel, the results reveal that the device is diffraction limited in different states of hydrogel. In addition, the versatility of hydrogel-based metasurfaces is further explored to design intensity tunable metalens, that can dynamically tailor the transmission intensity and confined it into the same focal spot under different states, i.e., swollen and collapsed. It is anticipated that the non-toxicity and biocompatibility make the hydrogel-based active metasurfaces suitable for active plasmonic devices with ubiquitous roles in biomedical imaging, sensing, and encryption systems.

Fabry-Perot Cavity Control for Tunable Raman Scattering

The Fabry-Perot (FP) resonator is an intuitive and versatile optical structure owing to its uniqueness in light-matter interactions, yielding resonance with a wide range of wavelengths as it couples with photonic materials encapsulated in a dielectric cavity. Leveraging the FP resonator for molecular detection, a simple geometry of the metal-dielectric-metal structure is demonstrated to allow tuning of the enhancement factors (EFs) of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The optimum near-field EF from randomly dispersed gold nano-gaps and dynamic modulation of the far-field SERS EF by varying the optical resonance of the FP etalon are systematically investigated by performing computational and experimental analyses. The proposed strategy of combining plasmonic nanostructures with FP etalons clearly reveals wavelength matching of FP resonance to excitation and scattering wavelengths plays a key role in determining the magnitude of the SERS EF. Finally, the optimum near-field generating optical structure with controlled dielectric cavity is suggested for a tunable SERS platform, and its dynamic SERS switching performance is confirmed by demonstrating information encryption through liquid immersion.

Au Nanorods on Carbon-Based Nanomaterials as Nanohybrid Substrates for High-Efficiency Dynamic Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Gold nanorods (AuNRs) with different aspect ratios were prepared by the seed-mediated growth method and combined with three carbon-based nanomaterials of multiple dimensions (i.e., zero-dimensional (0D) carbon black (CB), one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and two-dimensional (2D) graphene oxide (GO)). The AuNR/carbon-based nanomaterial hybrids were utilized in dynamic surface-enhanced Raman scattering (D-SERS). First, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was used to stabilize and coat the AuNRs, enabling them to be dispersed in water and conferring a positive charge to the surface. AuNR/carbon-based nanomaterial hybrids were then formed via electrostatic attraction with the negatively charged carbon-based nanomaterials. Subsequently, the AuNR/carbon-based nanomaterial hybrids were utilized as large-area and highly sensitive Raman spectroscopy substrates. The AuNR/GO hybrids afforded the best signal enhancement because the thickness of GO was less than 5 nm, which enabled the AuNRs adsorbed on GO to produce a good three-dimensional hotspot effect. The enhancement factor (EF) of the AuNR/GO hybrids for the dye molecule Rhodamine 6G (R6G) reached 1 × 10⁷, where the limit of detection (LOD) was 10^-8 M. The hybrids were further applied in D-SERS (detecting samples transitioning from the wet state to the dry state). During solvent evaporation, the system spontaneously formed many hotspots, which greatly enhanced the SERS signal. The final experimental results demonstrated that the AuNR/GO hybrids afforded the best D-SERS signal enhancement. The EF value for R6G reached 1.1 × 10⁸ after 27 min, with a limit of detection of 10^-9 M at 27 min. Therefore, the AuNR/GO nanohybrids have extremely high sensitivity as molecular sensing elements for SERS and are also very suitable for the rapid detection of single molecules in water quality and environmental management.

Shell thickness-controlled synthesis of Au@Ag core-shell nanorods structure for contaminants sensing by SERS

The accessibility of contaminants detection methods is urgently required for environmental and food safety control. In this report, we developed the Au@Ag core-shell nanorod structures for contaminants sensing by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The silver shell thickness and the corresponding plasmon wavelength of Au@Ag core-shell nanorods were tuned by changing the coating time and the silver precursor amount. Moreover, these structures exhibit ultra-sensitive detection ability for Nile blue A dye and Fenobucarb pesticide sensing by SERS. Interestingly, the highest Raman enhancement factor is obtained for the Au@Ag core-shell sample with a minimal silver shell thickness leaded by the optimal enhancement of the electromagnetic field of bimetallic structures. Hence, our report demonstrates that the combination of unique features of two plasmonic metals into core-shell structures promises potential applicability in SERS-based analysis.

Highly Heterogeneous Polarization and Solvation of Gold Nanoparticles in Aqueous Electrolytes

The performance of gold nanoparticles (NPs) in applications depends critically on the structure of the NP-solvent interface, at which the electrostatic surface polarization is one of the key characteristics that affects hydration, ionic adsorption, and electrochemical reactions. Here, we demonstrate significant effects of explicit metal polarizability on the solvation and electrostatic properties of bare gold NPs in aqueous electrolyte solutions of sodium salts of various anions (Cl^-, BF₄^-, PF₆^-, nitrophenolate, and 3- and 4-valent hexacyanoferrate), using classical molecular dynamics simulations with a polarizable core-shell model for the gold atoms. We find considerable spatial heterogeneity of the polarization and electrostatic potentials on the NP surface, mediated by a highly facet-dependent structuring of the interfacial water molecules. Moreover, ion-specific, facet-dependent ion adsorption leads to considerable alterations of the interfacial polarization. Compared to nonpolarizable NPs, surface polarization modifies water local dipole densities only slightly but has substantial effects on the electrostatic surface potentials and leads to significant lateral redistributions of ions on the NP surface. Besides, interfacial polarization effects cancel out in the far field for monovalent ions but not for polyvalent ions, as anticipated from continuum "image-charge" concepts. Far-field effective Debye-Hückel surface potentials change accordingly in a valence-specific fashion. Hence, the explicit charge response of metal NPs is crucial for the accurate description and interpretation of interfacial electrostatics (e.g., for charge transfer and interfacial polarization in catalysis and electrochemistry).

Single plasmonic nanostructures for biomedical diagnosis

The field of single nanoparticle plasmonics has grown enormously. There is no doubt that a wide diversity of the nanoplasmonic techniques and nanostructures represents a tremendous opportunity for fundamental biomedical studies as well as sensing and imaging applications. Single nanoparticle plasmonic biosensors are efficient in label-free single-molecule detection, as well as in monitoring real-time binding events of even several biomolecules. In the present review, we have discussed the prominent advantages and advances in single particle characterization and synthesis as well as new insight into and information on biomedical diagnosis uniquely obtained using single particle approaches. The approaches include the fundamental studies of nanoplasmonic behavior, two typical methods based on refractive index change and characteristic light intensity change, exciting innovations of synthetic strategies for new plasmonic nanostructures, and practical applications using single particle sensing, imaging, and tracking. The basic sphere and rod nanostructures are the focus of extensive investigations in biomedicine, while they can be programmed into algorithmic assemblies for novel plasmonic diagnosis. Design of single nanoparticles for the detection of single biomolecules will have far-reaching consequences in biomedical diagnosis.

Growth of Nanostructured Silver Flowers by Metal-Mediated Catalysis for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Application

Metallic flowers with nanoscale surface roughness can provide a platform for highly sensitive and reproductive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Here, we present a method to grow a nanostructured silver flower (NSF) at the apex of a plasmonic tip based on metal-mediated catalysis, where the NSF was rapidly generated in no more than 1 min. The NSF was used as the SERS substrate under linear polarization beam (LPB) excitation to achieve a 10^-9 M detection sensitivity for the malachite green analyte. The reproducibility for SERS is examined to have been guaranteed by comparing Raman intensity enhanced by different NSFs. Compared with the LPB, the azimuthal vector beam (AVB) excitation can further improve the SERS activity of the NSF, which is consistent with the simulation result that the gap mode can be effectively generated between two adjacent Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and between the NPs and the Ag pyramids on the surface of the NSF under AVB illumination. This work makes it promising for plasmonic tip-mediated catalysis to be applied in nanofabrication, the products of which can be further exploited in nanostructure-based ultrasensitive detection.

Ion-Specific Adsorption on Bare Gold (Au) Nanoparticles in Aqueous Solutions: Double-Layer Structure and Surface Potentials

We study the solvation and electrostatic properties of bare gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) of 1-2 nm in size in aqueous electrolyte solutions of sodium salts of various anions with large physicochemical diversity (Cl^-, BF₄^-, PF₆^-, Nip^- (nitrophenolate), 3- and 4-valent hexacyanoferrate (HCF)) using nonpolarizable, classical molecular dynamics computer simulations. We find a substantial facet selectivity in the adsorption structure and spatial distribution of the ions at the AuNPs: while sodium and some of the anions (e.g., Cl^-, HCF^3-) adsorb more at the "edgy" (100) and (110) facets of the NPs, where the water hydration structure is more disordered, other ions (e.g., BF₄^-, PF₆^-, Nip^-) prefer to adsorb strongly on the extended and rather flat (111) facets. In particular, Nip^-, which features an aromatic ring in its chemical structure, adsorbs strongly and perturbs the first water monolayer structure on the NP (111) facets substantially. Moreover, we calculate adsorptions, radially resolved electrostatic potentials as well as the far-field effective electrostatic surface charges and potentials by mapping the long-range decay of the calculated electrostatic potential distribution onto the standard Debye-Hückel form. We show how the extrapolation of these values to other ionic strengths can be performed by an analytical Adsorption-Grahame relation between the effective surface charge and potential. We find for all salts negative effective surface potentials in the range from -10 mV for NaCl down to about -80 mV for NaNip, consistent with typical experimental ranges for the zeta potential. We discuss how these values depend on the surface definition and compare them to the explicitly calculated electrostatic potentials near the NP surface, which are highly oscillatory in the ±0.5 V range.

The laser-triggered dynamical plasmonic optical trapping of targets and advanced Raman detection sensitivity

Targets can be captured at hot spots during the laser-induced agglomeration of AgNPs via dynamical plasmonic optical trapping.
