MoDoop: An Automated Computational Approach for COSMO-RS Prediction of Biopolymer Solubilities in Ionic Liquids

Magnetic superhydrophobic melamine sponges for crude oil removal from water

This paper proposes the preparation of a new sorbent material based on melamine sponges (MS) with superhydrophobic, superoleophilic, and magnetic properties. This study involved impregnating the surface of commercially available MS with eco-friendly deep eutectic solvents (DES) and Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The DES selection was based on the screening of 105 eutectic mixtures using COSMO-RS modeling. Other parameters affecting the efficiency and selectivity of oil removal from water were optimized using the Box-Bhenken model. Menthol:Thymol (1:1)@Fe3O4-MS exhibited the highest sorption capacity for real crude oils (101.7-127.3 g/g). This new sponge demonstrated paramagnetic behavior (31.06 emu/g), superhydrophobicity (151°), superoleophobicity (0°), low density (15.6 mg/cm3), high porosity (99 %), and excellent mechanical stability. Furthermore, it allows multiple regeneration processes without losing its sorption capacity. Based on these benefits, Menthol:Thymol (1:1)@Fe3O4-MS shows promise as an efficient, cost-effective, and eco-friendly substitute for the existing sorbents.

Screening ionic liquids for dissolving hemicellulose by COSMO-RS based on the selective model

The utilization of biomass resources has attracted more and more attention due to the consumption of non-renewable resources. Compared with cellulose and lignin, hemicellulose has been less studied. Some ionic liquids (ILs) have been proved to be excellent solvents for lignocellulosic pretreatment. However, screening of more efficient ILs is difficult due to numerous possible ILs. Computational chemistry has been proved effective in solvent screening, but a precise model is indispensable. In this work, we focused on building several appropriate models and selected the most suitable one. According to the structure of hemicellulose, six hemicellulose models were constructed and the mid-dimer of the xylan chain hemicellulose (MDXC) model was proved to be the best compared with the reported experimental results. Based on the MDXC model, 1368 ILs were screened to evaluate their ability to dissolve hemicellulose by Conductor-like Screening Model for Real Solvents (COSMO-RS). The activity coefficient (γ), excess enthalpy (HE), and σ-profile indicated that the hydrogen-bond (H-bond) played a vital role in the dissolution of hemicellulose. Anions played a more critical role than cations, where small anions with H-bond acceptor groups could enhance the molecular interactions with hemicellulose. This work provided a thermodynamic understanding of hemicellulose and IL solvent systems. It highlights the importance of building appropriate solute models, which may be necessary to predict of the other thermodynamic properties in the future.

New Screening Protocol for Effective Green Solvents Selection of Benzamide, Salicylamide and Ethenzamide

New protocol for screening efficient and environmentally friendly solvents was proposed and experimentally verified. The guidance for solvent selection comes from computed solubility via COSMO-RS approach. Furthermore, solute-solvent affinities computed using advanced quantum chemistry level were used as a rationale for observed solvents ranking. The screening protocol pointed out that 4-formylomorpholine (4FM) is an attractive solubilizer compared to commonly used aprotic solvents such as DMSO and DMF. This was tested experimentally by measuring the solubility of the title compounds in aqueous binary mixtures in the temperature range between 298.15 K and 313.15 K. Additional measurements were also performed for aqueous binary mixtures of DMSO and DMF. It has been found that the solubility of studied aromatic amides is very high and quite similar in all three aprotic solvents. For most aqueous binary mixtures, a significant decrease in solubility with a decrease in the organic fraction is observed, indicating that all systems can be regarded as efficient solvent-anti-solvent pairs. In the case of salicylamide dissolved in aqueous-4FM binary mixtures, a strong synergistic effect has been found leading to the highest solubility for 0.6 mole fraction of 4-FM.

Efficient Extraction of Fermentation Inhibitors by Means of Green Hydrophobic Deep Eutectic Solvents

The methods for hydrogen yield efficiency improvements, the gaseous stream purification in gaseous biofuels generation, and the biomass pretreatment are considered as the main trends in research devoted to gaseous biofuel production. The environmental aspect related to the liquid stream purification arises. Moreover, the management of post-fermentation broth with the application of various biorefining techniques gains importance. Chemical compounds occurring in the exhausted liquid phase after biomass pretreatment and subsequent dark and photo fermentation processes are considered as value-added by products. The most valuable are furfural (FF), 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and levulinic acid (LA). Enriching their solutions can be carried with the application of liquid–liquid extraction with the use of a suitable solvent. In these studies, hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were tested as extractants. The screening of 56 DESs was carried out using the Conductor-like Screening Model for Real Solvents (COSMO-RS). DESs which exposed the highest inhibitory effect on fermentation and negligible water solubility were prepared. The LA, FF, and HMF were analyzed using FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. In addition, the basic physicochemical properties of DES were carefully studied. In the second part of the paper, deep eutectic solvents were used for the extraction of FF, LA, and HMF from post-fermentation broth (PFB). The main extraction parameters, i.e., temperature, pH, and DES: PFB volume ratio (V_DES:V_PFB), were optimized by means of a Box–Behnken design model. Two approaches have been proposed for extraction process. In the first approach, DES was used as a solvent. In the second, one of the DES components was added to the sample, and DES was generated in situ. To enhance the post-fermentation broth management, optimization of the parameters promoting HMF, FF, and LA extraction was carried under real conditions. Moreover, the antimicrobial effect of the extraction of FF, HMF, and LA was investigated to define the possibility of simultaneous separation of microbial parts and denatured peptides via precipitation.

Removal of Siloxanes from Model Biogas by Means of Deep Eutectic Solvents in Absorption Process

The paper presents the screening of 20 deep eutectic solvents (DESs) composed of tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPABr) and glycols in various molar ratios, and 6 conventional solvents as absorbents for removal of siloxanes from model biogas stream. The screening was achieved using the conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS) based on the comparison of siloxane solubility in DESs. For the DES which was characterized by the highest solubility of siloxanes, studies of physicochemical properties, i.e., viscosity, density, and melting point, were performed. DES composed of tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPABr) and tetraethylene glycol (TEG) in a 1:3 molar ratio was used as an absorbent in experimental studies in which several parameters were optimized, i.e., the temperature, absorbent volume, and model biogas flow rate. The mechanism of siloxanes removal was evaluated by means of an experimental FT-IR analysis as well as by theoretical studies based on σ-profile and σ-potential. On the basis of the obtained results, it can be concluded that TPABr:TEG (1:3) is a very effective absorption solvent for the removal of siloxanes from model biogas, and the main driving force of the absorption process is the formation of the hydrogen bonds between DES and siloxanes.

Theoretical and Economic Evaluation of Low-Cost Deep Eutectic Solvents for Effective Biogas Upgrading to Bio-Methane

This paper presents the theoretical screening of 23 low-cost deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as absorbents for effective removal of the main impurities from biogas streams using a conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS). Based on thermodynamic parameters, i.e., the activity coefficient, excess enthalpy, and Henry’s constant, two DESs composed of choline chloride: urea in a 1:2 molar ratio (ChCl:U 1:2), and choline chloride: oxalic acid in a 1:2 molar ratio (ChCl:OA 1:2) were selected as the most effective absorbents. The σ-profile and σ-potential were used in order to explain the mechanism of the absorptive removal of CO2, H2S, and siloxanes from a biogas stream. In addition, an economic analysis was prepared to demonstrate the competitiveness of new DESs in the sorbents market. The unit cost of 1 m3 of pure bio-methane was estimated to be in the range of 0.35–0.37 EUR, which is comparable to currently used technologies.

MoleGear: A Java-Based Platform for Evolutionary De Novo Molecular Design

A Java-based platform, MoleGear, is developed for de novo molecular design based on the chemistry development kit (CDK) and other Java packages. MoleGear uses evolutionary algorithm (EA) to explore chemical space, and a suite of fragment-based operators of growing, crossover, and mutation for assembling novel molecules that can be scored by prediction of binding free energy or a weighted-sum multi-objective fitness function. The EA can be conducted in parallel over multiple nodes to support large-scale molecular optimizations. Some complementary utilities such as fragment library design, chemical space analysis, and graphical user interface are also integrated into MoleGear. The candidate molecules as inhibitors for the human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) protease were designed by MoleGear, which validates the potential capability for de novo molecular design.
