Highly Magnetizable Crosslinked Chloromethylated Polystyrene-Based Nanocomposite Beads for Selective Molecular Separation of 4-Aminobenzoic Acid

A high loading nanocarrier for the 5-fluorouracil anticancer drug based on chloromethylated graphene

In the present work, we report a facile and simple strategy to functionalize graphene with the chloromethyl (CH2Cl) functional group as a nanoplatform for effectual loading of the 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) anticancer drug. To achieve the highest loading capacity, hydrochloric acid concentration, the quantity of paraformaldehyde, ultrasonic treatment time, and stirring duration were all carefully optimized. The results revealed that the optimum conditions for functionalizing graphene were obtained at 70 mL of hydrochloric acid, 700 mg of paraformaldehyde, and times of 35 min and 2 h of ultrasonication and stirring. Later, the drug (5-FU) was loaded onto CH2Cl-functionalized graphene through hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions. The chemical structure of the functionalized material and the loading of the 5-FU drug were confirmed by FTIR analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The 5-FU loading capacity of as-prepared materials was determined using the ion chromatography instrument. Our findings demonstrate that chloromethylated graphene is a very excellent nano-platform for high-efficiency drug loading, yielding a loading capacity of 52.3%, comparatively higher than pure graphene (36.54%).

A lipase/poly (ionic liquid)-styrene microspheres/PVA composite hydrogel for esterification application

Enzymes are particularly attractive as biocatalysts for the green synthesis of chemicals and pharmaceuticals. However, the traditional enzyme purification and separation process is complex and inefficient, which limits the wide application of enzyme catalysis. In this paper, an efficient strategy for enzyme purification and immobilization in one step is proposed. A novel poly (ionic liquid)-styrene microsphere is prepared by molecular design and synthesis for adsorbing and purifying high activity lipase from fermentation broth directly. By optimizing the surface morphologies and charge of the microspheres, the enzyme loading is significantly improved. In order to further stabilize the catalytic environment of lipase, the resulting lipase/poly (ionic liquid)-styrene microspheres are immobilized in physical crosslinking hydrogel to obtain a complex lipase catalytic system, which can be prepared into various shapes according to the requirements of catalytic environment. In the actual catalytic reaction process, this complex lipase catalytic system exhibits excellent catalytic activity (6314.69 ± 21.27 U mg^-1) and good harsh environment tolerance compared with the lipase fermentation broth (1672.87 ± 36.68 U mg^-1). Under the condition of cyclic catalysis, the complex lipase catalytic system shows the outstanding reusability (After 8 cycles the enzymatic activity is still higher than that of the lipase fermentation broth) and is easily separated from the products.

Preparation and dye adsorption properties of an oxygen-rich porous organic polymer

Porous organic polymers (POPs), allowing fine synthetic control over their chemical structures, have shown great promise for addressing environmental issues. The high specific surface area and abundant porous structures of POPs can provide large storage space to adsorb dye molecules. Meanwhile, the introduction of polar groups, such as oxygen-containing functional groups in POPs, can not only improve the hydrophilicity, but also provide a strong interaction with dye molecules, thereby improving their adsorption performance. In this paper, an oxygen-rich porous polymer, POP-O, containing polar carbonyl and hydroxyl groups, was prepared by Sonogashira-Hagihara cross-coupling polycondensation. The characteristic results show that POP-O exhibits a hierarchical pore structure with a high specific surface area of 619 m² g^-1. The combination of abundant polar functional groups and high porosity endows POP-O with decent dye adsorption performance, and its theoretical maximum adsorption capacity for Rhodamine B (Rh B) is calculated to be 1012 mg g^-1.

Determination of phenols in natural and waste waters by capillary electrophoresis after preconcentration on magnetic nanoparticles coated with aminated hypercrosslinked polystyrene

An efficient sorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction was developed from Fe₃ O₄ nanoparticles covered with aminated hypercrosslinked polystyrene. The sorbent has a saturation magnetization of 47 emu/g and a surface area of 509 mg/g and was tested for the extraction of 11 phenols from aqueous media. The optimum conditions were as follows: pH 3; adsorbent mass, 20.0 mg; adsorption time, 30 min; eluent (acetone) volume, 0.5 mL; and desorption time, 5 min. The enrichment factor after desorption reached 1595-1716 and the maximum adsorption capacity was 501-909 mg/g. Capillary electrophoresis was applied successively to separate 11 phenols after solid-phase extraction. The best separation was achieved using a fused silica capillary and borate buffer (pH 10.7) as a supporting electrolyte. After optimization, the linearity range was from 0.2 to 950 μg/L, and the limits of detection were 0.05-0.2 μg/L. The relative standard deviation varied from 6.1 to 8.7% (C = 1 μg/L) and from 2.9 to 3.5% (C = 500 μg/L). The determination of phenols is complicated in eutrophic water and spring water with a high content of humic and fulvic acids.
