Compartmentalization of Alkaline-Earth Metals in Salen-Type Cu- and Ni-Complexes in Solution and in the Solid State

Carbon dots-facilitated on-demand dissolution of Ca-alginate hydrogel via site-specific mineralization for wound healing

On-demand dissolution of hydrogels has shown much potential in easy and pain-free removal of wound dressings. This work firstly describes a type of carbon dots (CDs) for dissolving Ca-alginate hydrogel via site-specific mineralization method. The CDs were characterized by two features, which included presence of primary/secondary amine groups and generation of calcium crystals with Ca2+. Especially, the amount of primary/secondary amine groups on CDs played key role in determining whether hydrogel could be dissolved. When there were sufficient primary/secondary amine groups, the mineralization occurred on CDs rather than alginates due to the hydrogen bond between primary/secondary amine and carboxyl of alginates. Thereby, this promoted the gel-sol transition through Ca2+ capture from the hydrogels. Moreover, antibacterial test revealed Ca2+ capture from cell walls, while in vivo test revealed hypoxia relief due to porous structures of the renewed hydrogels. Overall, CDs with sufficient primary/secondary amine groups could dissolve Ca-alginate hydrogel through site-specific mineralization method, accompanying by additional functions of antibacterial and hypoxia relief.

Synthesis of a Heterometallic [Zn2Ca] Pinwheel Array Stabilized by Amide-Amide Synthons

The rational design of heterometallic compounds bearing s-block metal ions have been a difficult task for chemists owing to their lack of preferential geometries. However, some strategies, such as the design of coordinating pockets with different sizes and/or donor atoms, have offered great results. In this work, this strategy has been tested using Ca(II) as an s-block metal ion and a compound previously obtained by our group with the formula [Zn3(μ-ACA)6(4-phpy)2], which contains tetrahedral N,O- and octahedral O-coordinating pockets as a model structure. From this work, the corresponding heterometallic compound with the formula [Zn2Ca(μ-ACA)6(4-phpy)2]·EtOH (1) has been successfully synthesized, and fully characterized, and its crystal structure has been elucidated. Furthermore, we have compiled all the crystal structures containing [Zn2M] pinwheel secondary building units (SBUs), where M stands for an s-block metal ion, and the observed tendencies, as well as the promising applications as template SBUs for the preparation of 1D–3D coordination polymers, have been discussed. Finally, solid-state UV-Vis and photoluminescence have been recorded and compared with the homometallic [Zn3(μ-ACA)6(4-phpy)2] compound.

Integrated Photoresponsive Alkaline Earth Metal Coordination Networks: Synthesis, Topology, Photochromism and Photoluminescence Investigation

Photoresponsive materials are a key part of the age of smart technology that have potential in a broad range of applications. Coordination networks (CNs) are widely used due to their designability and stability. In this work, three novel alkaline earth metal coordination networks (AEM-CNs): [Mg(CMNDI)(H₂ O)₂ ], [Ca(CMNDI)(H₂ O)₂ ]⋅H₂ O, and [Sr(CMNDI)(H₂ O)(DMF)] with fsl, cds, and scn topology nets were synthetized via N,N'-bis(carboxymethyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide (H₂ CMNDI); the scn net is not found in the Reticular Chemistry Structure Resource or ToposPro. The reusable and sensitive photochromic properties of the three CNs enable them to be used as secret inks or ultraviolet detectors. In addition, the CNs also exhibited reusable photoluminescent turn-off toward the drug molecules, balsalazide disodium (Bal.) and colchicine (Col.), with good limits of detection of 0.16 and 0.70 μM. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of a fluorescence sensor for Bal. Thus, the AEM-CNs provide a design idea for integrated photoresponsive materials that could be further improved in the near future by further study.
