Facile synthesis of eco-friendly alginate-chitosan bio-adsorbent for critical raw materials adsorption: A comprehensive study

Sustainable management of critical raw materials is of paramount importance to ensure a steady supply and reduce environmental impact. The application of newly synthesized and environmentally friendly ALG@CS material as a bio-adsorbent for the effective rare earth elements removal from aqueous solution has been presented. The synthesized material underwent FTIR, XPS, EDX, and SEM analysis to determine its suitability for metal uptake. To evaluate the adsorption capacity of ALG@CS for rare earth elements several factors were taken into consideration. These factors included alginate:chitosan ratios, bead size, pH level, composite mass, interaction time, metal ion concentration, and temperature, being all varied during the batch mode evaluation process. Under the optimal conditions, the maximum adsorption capacities were found to be 145.90 mg La(III)/g, 168.44 mg Ce(III)/g, 132.51 mg Pr(III)/g, 128.40 mg Nd(III)/g, 154.36 mg Sm(III)/g, and 165.10 mg Ho(III)/g. The equilibrium data fits well with non-linear three-parameter Sips and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models. The PSO model finds the highest process suitability. The synthesized ALG@CS bio-adsorbent showed excellent regenerative capacity in ten cycles, making it a suitable adsorbent for rare earth elements uptake. The unique bio-adsorbents combination allows for efficient critical raw materials adsorption providing a promising solution for their recovery and recycling.

Exploring the potential applications of amphiphilic carbon dots based nanocomposite hydrogel in liquid chromatographic separations

BACKGROUND

Due to their excellent stability, low toxicity, flexible modification and adjustable functionality, carbon dots (CDs) have a promising application prospect in the field of chromatographic stationary phases. Hydrogels are new functional polymer materials with three-dimensional network structure that have excellent hydrophilicity, high porosity and unique mechanical properties, which are also good candidate materials for liquid chromatography. Nevertheless, a review of the literature reveals that CDs based nanocomposite hydrogels have not yet been reported as HPLC stationary phases.

RESULTS

In this work, amphiphilic CDs with multiple functional groups and polyacrylic acid hydrogel were grafted to the surface of silica gel by an in-situ polymerization method, and a CDs/polyacrylic acid nanocomposite hydrogel stationary phase (CDs/hydrogel@SiO2) was prepared. CDs act as the macroscopic cross-linking agents to form a cross-linked network with polyacrylic acid chains through physical cross-linking by hydrogen bonding and chemical cross-linking by amidation and esterification reactions, which not only improve the swelling property of the hydrogel but also increase its stability. Additionally, the introduction of CDs with multifunctional groups modulates the hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance of the hydrogel that also imparts good hydrophobicity to the composite hydrogel. Through the study of retention mechanism and influencing factors, it is certificate that the CDs/hydrogel@SiO2 has mixed-mode chromatographic performance. Furthermore, the CDs/hydrogel@SiO2 column shows great potential for the determination of organic contaminants in environmental water samples.

SIGNIFICANCE

This work confirms the potential application of CDs/hydrogel composite for the separation of various samples and provides the possibility of developing CDs based nanocomposite hydrogel in the field of liquid chromatography. Introducing CDs into hydrogel can open up a new way for nanocomposite hydrogels to be used in HPLC, which expands the advance of hydrogel and CDs in separation field.

Enhanced molecular recognition with longer chain crosslinkers in molecularly imprinted polymers for an efficient separation of TR active substances

Molecular imprinting technology has been widely studied as a technique to obtain molecular recognition by artificial means. Selecting functional monomers or polymerization conditions plays a key role to optimize molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) synthesis. To date, there have been few reports well exploiting the effect of crosslinkers. Here, in this study, we synthesized the MIPs using poly(ethyleneglycol) dimethacrylate with different units of ethylene oxide (n = 1 to 23) as crosslinkers to observe the molecular recognition abilities. The MIPs were attached to the surface of mono-dispersed polymer beads. The obtained spherical MIPs and non-imprinted polymers were filled in a column for high performance liquid chromatography. Then the retention selectivity toward TR active substances was evaluated. The result revealed that the recognition ability did not improve regardless of the amount of ethylene oxide. With the crosslinker (n = 9), extremely high retention selectivity was observed, which provides at most around ten times as large imprinting factors in comparison with other MIPs. Interestingly, we obtained the highest recognition ability at around polymerization temperature from the evaluation of the recognition ability toward temperature shift using the MIP (n = 9). In general, hydrogen bonding based on MIPs provides high recognition ability at low temperature, whereas, this study indicates that the use of flexible crosslinkers may enable the synthesis of MIPs that precisely memorize the conditions of polymerization. Lastly, we simultaneously analyzed the TR active substances using the column filled with MIPs (n = 9). The result showed relatively linear correlation between the retention strength of each substance and phycological activity toward TR obtained by yeast assay. Therefore, we can conclude that an induced fit like the receptor emerged by constructing the flexible molecular recognition field.

Environmental chemistry response of beryllium to diverse soil-solution conditions at a waste disposal site

This study evaluated how the variation in different sorption conditions of beryllium (Be) in soil-water systems (electrolytes; ionic strengths; competing, counter, and co-existing ions; concentrations of Be and soil; and temperature) affected Be's environmental behaviour. For this reason, potentially contaminated soil was collected from a legacy waste site near Sydney, Australia. The sorption-desorption plateau for Be was found at >12.5 g L^-1 (soil/solution), considering higher sorption and limited desorption. Variable surface charges developed by different added ions (competing ions, counter ions, and co-existence of all ions) were not always correlated with Be sorption. However, effects of added ions in Be sorption (increased by counter ions and decreased by competing ions) primarily occurred at low pH, with no noticeable changes at pH > 6 due to the hydration and precipitation behaviour of Be at higher pH. Both laboratory data and modelling indicated the substantial effect of counter ions on increased sorption of Be. Relatively higher amounts of sorption under the co-existence of all added ions were suggested from synergistic actions. Sorption was favourable (K_L > 0, and 0 < R_L < 1) across all concentrations and temperatures at pH 5.5, and high retention (84-97%) occurred after four desorption cycles indicated specific sorption. The sorption process was exothermic (ΔH > -43 kJ mole^-1), while desorption was endothermic (ΔH > +78.4 kJ mole^-1). All sorption-desorption reactions were spontaneous (ΔG = -Ve), and executed without any structural deformation (ΔS = nearly zero) of soil particles. However, the effect of temperature on desorption was influenced by the concentrations of Be. Higher retention and different sorption-desorption parameters (K_d-desorption > K_d-sorption; K_f-desorption > K_f-sorption; n_desorption/n_sorption < 1) indicate limited mobility of Be and the presence of desorption hysteresis in the studied soil under the experimental conditions.

Simultaneous effect of different chromatographic conditions on the chromatographic retention of pentapeptide derivatives (HGRFG and NPNPT)

Introduction: Oligopeptides exhibit great prospects for clinical application and its separation is of great importance in new drug development. Methods: To accurately predict the retention of pentapeptides with analogous structures in chromatography, the retention times of 57 pentapeptide derivatives in seven buffers at three temperatures and four mobile phase compositions were measured via reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The parameters ( k H A , k A , and p K a ) of the acid-base equilibrium were obtained by fitting the data corresponding to a sigmoidal function. We then studied the dependence of these parameters on the temperature (T), organic modifier composition (φ, methanol volume fraction), and polarity ( P m N parameter). Finally, we proposed two six-parameter models with (1) pH and T and (2) pH and φ or P m N as the independent variables. These models were validated for their prediction capacities by linearly fitting the predicted retention factor k-value and the experimental k-value. Results: The results showed that log k H A and log k A exhibited linear relationships with 1 / T , φ or P m N for all pentapeptides, especially for the acid pentapeptides. In the model of pH and T, the correlation coefficient (R²) of the acid pentapeptides was 0.8603, suggesting a certain prediction capability of chromatographic retention. Moreover, in the model of pH and φ or P m N , the R² values of the acid and neutral pentapeptides were greater than 0.93, and the average root mean squared error was approximately 0.3, indicating that the k-values could be effectively predicted. Discussion: In summary, the two six-parameter models were appropriate to characterize the chromatographic retention of amphoteric compounds, especially the acid or neutral pentapeptides, and could predict the chromatographic retention of pentapeptide compounds.

Quantitative evaluation of reversed-phase packing material based on calcium carbonate microspheres modified with an alternating copolymer

Considering the vulnerability of silica gel to alkaline mobile phases, a highly alkaline stable stationary phase for HPLC is required to separate basic compounds with high separation efficiency. To address this issue, we have developed a high alkaline stable packing material (CaCO₃-PMAcO) based on mesoporous calcium carbonate microspheres modified with poly(maleic acid-alt-1-octadecene). In this study, we report further investigation of the separation performance of CaCO₃-PMAcO column by systematically evaluating the effects of particle size and chromatographic conditions. Based on the theory of the van Deemter equation, the separation efficiency was related to the size of CaCO₃-PMAcO particles (2.9 - 5.7 µm). The evaluation of thermodynamics of retention by changing the column temperature from 20 °C to 45 °C implied that the retention mode was dominated by hydrophobic interaction associated with the exothermic enthalpy changes (-11.1 to -12.5 kJ/mol). The results of column selectivity tests revealed that the CaCO₃-PMAcO column had hydrophobic selectivity comparable to C₁₈ silica gel columns (α_P/B; CaCO₃-PMAcO column: 1.53, C₁₈ column: 1.69), and higher shape/steric selectivity (α_Tri/Ter; CaCO₃-PMAcO column: 1.56, C₁₈ column: 0.955). In practice, the CaCO₃-PMAcO column could be applied to the separation of not only alkylbenzenes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, but also to basic tricyclic antidepressants by using an alkaline mobile phase (pH 12).

The Phonon Theory of Liquids and Biological Fluids: Developments and Applications

Among the three basic states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas), the liquid state has always eluded general theoretical approaches for describing liquid energy and heat capacity. In this Viewpoint, we derive the phonon theory of liquids and biological fluids stemming from Frenkel's microscopic picture of the liquid state. Specifically, the theory predicts the existence of phonon gaps in vibrational spectra of liquids and a thermodynamic boundary in the supercritical state. Direct experimental evidence reaffirming these theoretical predictions was achieved through a combination of techniques using static compression X-ray diffraction and inelastic X-ray scattering on deeply supercritical argon in a diamond anvil cell. Furthermore, these findings inspired and then led to the discovery of phonon gaps in liquid crystals (mesogens), block copolymers, and biological membranes. Importantly, phonon gaps define viscoelastic crossovers in cellular membranes responsible for lipid self-diffusion, lateral molecular-level stress propagation, and passive transmembrane transport of small molecules and solutes. Finally, molecular interactions mediated by external stimuli result in synaptic activity controlling biological membranes' plasticity resulting in learning and memory. Therefore, we also discuss learning and memory effects─equally important for neuroscience as well as for the development of neuromorphic devices─facilitated in biological membranes by external stimuli.

Ultra-High-Performance Micellar Liquid Chromatography Comparing Tween 20 and Tween 40 for the Determination of Hydroxycinnamic Acids

A simple and green ultra-high-performance micellar liquid chromatography (MLC) method was developed here, comparing Tween 20 and Tween 40 for the first time as the only mobile phase modifiers with a C18 column. Its application to the separation of nine hydroxycinnamic acid (HCA) derivatives (cinnamic, caffeic, ferulic, sinapic, o-, m-, p-coumaric, 3,4-dihydroxyhydrocinnamic, and chlorogenic acids) was made, due to their importance as antioxidants in a variety of natural beverages such as wine and coffee. The optimal conditions of 45 °C temperature (T), 1% surfactant in the mobile phase, and pH control with 2.5 mM sulfuric acid were determined and used to elucidate the analytical figures of merit. Although the effect of these conditions was insignificant between the two surfactants, the nine-component HCA mixture was separated faster—in about 15 min—and with less peak tailing using Tween 20 than with Tween 40. The linearity of the Van’t Hoff (lnk versus 1/T) plots was evident for Tween 20, indicating a single retention mechanism—but less so for Tween 40. The equilibrium constants of the analytes with the micelles and the stationary phase were calculated. The developed method was successfully used to analyze organic red wine, spiked organic red wine, and green coffee diet pills. The percent recoveries of the nine HCA compounds spiked in the organic red wine ranged from 90% to 107%. The green coffee extract diet pills showed the presence of a significant amount of chlorogenic acid.

CoolTip: Low-Temperature Solid-Phase Extraction Microcolumn for Capturing Hydrophilic Peptides and Phosphopeptides

Reversed-phase solid-phase extraction (SPE) techniques are commonly used for desalting samples before LC/MS/MS in shotgun proteomics. However, hydrophilic peptides are often lost during the desalting step under the standard SPE conditions. Here, we describe a simple protocol in which a stop-and-go extraction tip packed with a poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) copolymer disc is used at 4 °C during sample loading without any organic solvent. Using this method, which we designate as the CoolTip protocol, we identified 2.9-fold more tryptic peptides and 6.1-fold more tryptic phosphopeptides from HeLa lysates than the standard SPE protocol for hydrophilic peptides, with a mobile phase of less than 8% acetonitrile in LC/MS/MS. There was no decrease in the recovery of hydrophobic peptides. CoolTip also provided better quantitative reproducibility in LC/MS/MS analysis. We anticipate that this protocol will provide improved performance in many kinds of shotgun proteomics experiments.

Temperature dependence of the gas-particle partitioning of selected VOCs

The gas-particle partitioning coefficients for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are difficult to acquire because discriminating the small mass fraction of the VOCs in the aerosol particle relative to that in the gas phase is challenging. In this paper, we report the temperature dependence of the gas-particle partitioning coefficient (Kp) for n-butanol (n-BuOH) and trichloroethylene (TCE). Using the bench-scale system that we developed, we measured the Kp of surrogate VOCs, n-BuOH, and TCE onto inorganic (ammonium sulfate, Am Sulf) and organic (succinic acid, SA) aerosol particles at a fixed relative humidity (RH) of 35%. At this RH level and temperature range of 278.15-308.15 K, the ln Kp for TCE and n-BuOH partitioning on SA aerosol particles were -27.0 ± 0.70 to -27.9 ± 0.01 and -13.9 ± 0.03 to -17.4 ± 0.17. In contrast, the ln Kp for TCE and n-BuOH partitioning on Am Sulf aerosol particles ranged from -26.4 ± 0.70 to -27.4 ± 0.71 and -14.1 ± 0.03 to -17.1 ± 0.17, respectively. Results showed that TCE fitted well with the classic van't Hoff relationship. The enthalpy of desorption (ΔHdes) for TCE was constant over the temperature range of 278.15 K to 308.15 K, behaving similarly to 1,2-dichlorobenzene. At a similar temperature range, n-BuOH partitioning into both aerosol particles exhibited nonlinear temperature dependence. The minimum ratio of ΔHdes (Am Sulf:SA) for n-BuOH partitioning on each aerosol type was at ∼278.15 K. The magnitude of the entropy ΔSdes for all VOCs was <1 kJ mol-1.

A thermodynamic study of capillary electrochromatographic retention of aromatic hydrocarbons on a lauryl acrylate porous polymer monolithic column with measured phase ratio

The phase ratio of a chromatographic system is an important measurement that has long been estimated or calculated, but rarely directly measured. This study utilized a nanoflow liquid chromatography instrument to more accurately measure the phase ratio for a lauryl acrylate porous polymer monolith. Direct measurement of the phase ratio, and its dependence on temperature, allows for a better understanding of the thermodynamics of retention of small analytes. This study investigates the retention of an alkyl benzene series, toluene to octylbenzene, via capillary electrochromatography. The phase ratio was determined to be 0.202 at 303 K and 0.213 at 333 K. Using the directly measured phase ratio, entropic contributions to retention can also be obtained. Therefore, the Gibbs free energy calculations from these measurements and methods can give insight to modes of retention. The free energy of retention for toluene is -3.97 kJ/mol at 303 K and -3.78 kJ/mol at 333 K. The trends for enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy of transfer show that retention is enthalpically driven in this capillary electrochromatography (CEC) porous polymer monolith system.

Comparison of the steric selectivity on hydrophilic interaction chromatography columns modified with poly(acrylamide) possessing different morphology

Poly(acrylamide) (PAAm)-modified hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) columns were prepared via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) and free radical polymerization (FRP) to generate brush-like and mushroom-like polymer chains on silica particles, respectively. The maltose homologues (MHs) and cyclodextrins (CDs) were chosen as analytes to evaluate steric selectivity by the different polymer morphologies in the ATRP-PAAm and the FRP-PAAm columns. The ATRP-PAAm exhibited superior retention than the FRP-PAAm and three commercial HILIC columns. The house-made PAAm columns provided significant hydrophilicity that enabled to analysis the oligosaccharides even in 60:40 mixture of acetonitrile-aqueous buffer. In the case of three ATRP-PAAm columns characterized by different polymer lengths and the density on the silica particles, those are different thickness of the water-enriched layer, and phase ratio φ, based on hydrophilicity of them columns. The logarithm of the retention factor (ln k) displayed a non-linear dependence on the inverse of the temperature (1/T, T = 278-333 K). Notably, a similar correlation was observed to exist between the logarithm of the phase ratio (ln φ), and 1/T. A van't Hoff plot was used to determine the thermodynamic parameters of the partition process for each MH. The values of the Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) for the analytes partition on the ATRP-PAAm columns were smaller than their counterparts measured for the FRP-PAAm columns; by contrast, the opposite trend was observed for the ΔG° values measured for CDs. The standard entropy ΔS° for MHs and CDs were comparable for the two types PAAm columns, while, the standard enthalpy, ΔH° displays significant difference between the ATRP and the FRP PAAm columns. These findings indicate that the differences between PAAm morphology and polymer densities on the stationary phase surface affect analyte differentiation on the basis of molecular steric factors. The higher selectivity for MHs and CDs displayed by ATRP-PAAm columns with respect to their FRP-PAAm and commercial amide columns will be useful for the fine separation of oligosaccharides.

Silver (I)-dimercaptotriazine functionalized silica: A highly selective liquid chromatography stationary phase targeting unsaturated molecules

Silver(I)-mercaptopropyl (Ag-MP) functionalized silica gel has demonstrated its effectiveness in separating various unsaturated organic compounds including unsaturated fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs), triglycerols (TAGs) and long-chain alkyl ketones (alkenones). While Ag-MP stationary phase displays many advantages over the conventional silver ion-impregnated silica gel (e.g., stability, high recovery, etc.), potential drawbacks of Ag-MP include relatively low retentions for unsaturated molecules, which could limit chromatographic resolutions under certain circumstances. In this study, we evaluate a new silver-thiolate stationary phase: silver(I)-dimercaptotriazine (Ag-DMT) functionalized silica gel targeting the separation of unsaturated compounds. We show Ag-DMT affords substantially higher retention factors, peak resolutions and capacities for TAGs and FAEEs than Ag-MP does. Ag-DMT also yields higher purity eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) from fish oil FAEE mixtures than Ag-MP. In addition, Ag-DMT resolves double bond positional and cis/trans-isomers of C_18:1 fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) as well as unsaturated methyl/ethyl alkenones with different number of double bonds. Based on van't Hoff plots, enthalpy changes during the adsorption of unsaturated FAEEs onto Ag-DMT are ~2 times higher than those on Ag-MP. Such difference may be attributed to the stronger electron-withdrawing effect of the thiol group on DMT, which results in more positively charged silver ions hence greater interactions with unsaturated molecules. The stronger interaction between double bonds and Ag-DMT is further corroborated by density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. Ag-DMT shows its high stability for repeated uses in the separation of TAGs over 319 runs, with peak resolutions decreasing by < 3%. Collectively, our data demonstrate the exceptionally high efficiency of Ag-DMT column for separating unsaturated molecules.

Does phase ratio in reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography vary with temperature?

Phase ratio Φ for an high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) column is a parameter defined as the ratio between the volume of the stationary phase V_s and the void volume of the column V_m. Together with the equilibrium constant K of the separation process, phase ratio is part of the retention factor k (k = KΦ). Although a considerable number of studies have been dedicated to the evaluation of V_s and V_m with the goal of obtaining the value for Φ, there are still debatable results regarding the true value of Φ, which for a column with a specific stationary phase may vary with the composition of the mobile phase. One route for the evaluation of the value of Φ uses the measurements of retention factors k on a specific column and mobile phase for two or more hydrocarbons for which the octanol/water partition coefficients log K_ow are known. This procedure has been applied in the present study for the evaluation of Φ for three commercially available C18 columns and two mobile phase compositions water/acetonitrile, in the temperature range 20 °C to 50 °C. It was found that phase ratio does change depending on the temperature, its "effective value" decreasing as the temperature increases which is in accordance with the decrease of retention times in reversed phase HPLC when the temperature increases. Besides other factors that may affect the correct calculation of thermodynamic functions, the change of phase ratio with temperature has implications regarding the possibility to calculate the enthalpy and entropy values from van't Hoff plots of the variation of log k as a function of 1/T, even when the retention process is dominated by unique hydrophobic type interactions.

Liquid chromatography of short chain carboxylic acids using a glutamic acid surfactant coated C18 stationary phase

A C18 column was modified with the anionic amino acid surfactant lauroyl-l-glutamate (LLG) to facilitate the separation of ten short-chain aliphatic carboxylic acids (oxalic, tartaric, malic, malonic, lactic, acetic, maleic, citric, fumaric, and succinic). The developed method was proven to be fast, versatile, and environmentally friendly. After the coating of the column using 1% LLG solution and optimizing chromatographic conditions such as pH and temperature, near baseline resolution of the ten carboxylic acids within 4 min with excellent peak shape at pH = 1.8 using 100% H₂O acidified with sulfuric acid was possible. Although the design of this stationary phase, with the hydrophilic group at the end of the alkyl chain, seems to be in contrast to such columns designed for a totally aqueous mobile phase that have a polar (often amide) group embedded near the silica surface, no evidence of phase collapse was noted. Linear relationships of ln retention factor (k) versus 1/Temperature (T) (van't Hoff plots) were generated for all the acids indicating a single retention mechanism was likely. As the pH of the mobile phase decreased, the analyte retention factors increased due to the increase of the fraction of the analyte with neutral charge (alpha zero). The surfactant amide linkage, being electron donating, increased the pKa of the more acidic carboxyl group of glutamic acid so both carboxyl groups were protonated (neutral) at pH 1.8. The exact nature of the retention mechanism is uncertain but there certainly seems to be a pronounced hydrophobic component due to the large difference in retention of fumaric acid and methyl fumarate at pH 1.8. In addition, eleven beverage samples were analyzed for their aliphatic carboxylic acid contents. The results showed that malic, fumaric, and citric acids were the most common carboxylic acids in natural beverages with concentrations as high as 6432 ppm of malic acid in organic apple juice, 64 ppm of fumaric acid in organic concord juice, and 6543 ppm citric acid in strawberry lemonade juice.
