Abstract
Toxic mercury ions (Hg2+) can cause serious environmental pollution and accumulate in living organisms via the food chain. Therefore, monitoring Hg2+ is crucial in ensuring the safety of ecosystems and organisms. In this work, a novel ratiometric fluorescent probe CMT (5-(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)-1-(7-hydroxy-coumarin-3-yl)-4-pentene-1,3-dione) based on coumarin was developed for detecting Hg2+, which displayed obvious fluorescence changes, a low detection limit (2.24 × 10-7 M), good selectivity, and a large Stokes shift (255 nm). The CMT probe could detect Hg2+ in real environmental soil and water samples. Furthermore, the CMT probe enabled the naked-eye detection of Hg2+ using test paper experiments. CMT was also applied for fluorescence imaging in living zebrafish and plants. This work provides a highly efficient tool for monitoring Hg2+ in environmental samples and biological systems.

An in-situ strategy to construct uracil-conjugated covalent organic frameworks with tunable fluorescence/recognition characteristics for sensitive and selective Mercury(II) detection. Abstract
Previous researches of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have shown their potential as fluorescent probes, but the regulation of their optical properties and recognition characteristics still remains a challenge, and most of reports required complicated post-decoration to improve the sensing performance. In this context, we propose a novel in-situ strategy to construct uracil-conjugated COFs and modulate their fluorescence properties for sensitive and selective mercury(II) detection. By using 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-formylphenyl)pyrene (TFPPy) and 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)pyrene (TAPPy) as fundamental blocks and 5-aminouraci (5-AU) as the functional monomer, a series of COFs (Py-COFs and Py-U-COFs-1 to Py-U-COFs-5) with tunable fluorescence were solvothermally synthesized through an in-situ Schiff base reaction. The π-conjugated framework serves as a signal reporter, the evenly and densely distributed uracil acts as a mercury(II) receptor, and the regular pores (channels) make the rapid and sensitive detection of the mercury(II) possible. In this research, we manage to regulate the crystalline structure, the fluorescence properties, and the sensing performance of COFs by simply changing the molar ratio of precursors. We expect this research to open up a new strategy for effective and controllable construction of functionalized COFs for environmental analysis.

Abstract
A novel thionocarbonate-coumarin-thiourea triad-based probe with dual recognition sites for sensing mercury (Hg2+) ion was developed. The synthesized probe possessed both fluorogenic ("off-on") and chromogenic (from colorless to blackish brown) sensing performance towards Hg2+ ions. The fluorescence intensity was increased by 70 fold after the addition of Hg2+. As expected, the probe exhibited excellent selectivity and sensitivity for Hg2+ compared to other common competitive metal ions. The fluorescence intensity of the probe improved linearly with the increase of the concentration of Hg2+ (0-40 μM). Also, the minimum limit of detection (LOD) of the synthesized probe was 0.12 μM. Considering the importance of test feasibility in the harsh environment, the developed probe was applicable for detecting Hg2+ ions over a broad working pH range of 3-11. It is reliable and qualifies for the quantitative determination of Hg2+ concentrations in actual water samples. Finally, the probe achieved the bioimaging performance of Hg2+ in living cells and plants with good biocompatibility.

Abstract
Three fluorescent glycosyl-rhodamine probes with good selectivity and sensitivity toward Hg2+ were developed. The detection limit of the probes toward Hg2+ is as low as 94.6 nM, which can be used to detect trace Hg2+ in solution. 1 : 1 stoichiometry was the most possible recognition mode of the probes toward Hg2+, and the OFF/ON mechanism of the probes toward Hg2+ could be attributed to the closing or opening of the rhodamine spiral structure caused by Hg2+. The detection of Hg2+ is reversible, which is beneficial for the recycling of probes. Moreover, these low cytotoxic probes can be safely and selectively applied to monitor Hg2+ levels in hepatocytes, and the fluorescence response follows a trend of Rho-Gal > Rho-Lac > Rho-Glu in HepG2 cells because the galactose group in Rho-Gal can selectively recognize ASGPR overexpressed on HepG2 cells.

Abstract
Metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) is a powerful tool in the design of sensitive chemical sensors by improving brightness and photostability of target-responsive fluorophores. Compounding these advantages with the modest hardware requirements of fluorescence sensing compared to that of centralized elemental analysis instruments, thus expanding the use of MEF to the detection of low-level inorganic pollutants, is a compelling aspiration. Among the latter, monitoring mercury in the environment, where some of its species disseminate through the food chain and, in time, to humans, has elicited a broad research effort toward the development of Hg2+-responsive fluorescent sensors. Herein, a Hg2+-sensitive MEF-enabled probe was conceived by grafting a Hg2+-responsive fluorescein derivative to concentric Ag@SiO2 NPs, where the metallic core enhances fluorescence emission of molecular probes embedded in a surrounding silica shell. Time-resolved fluorescence measurements showed that the fluorophore's excited-state lifetime decreases from 3.9 ns in a solid, coreless silica sphere to 0.4 ns in the core-shell nanoprobe, granting the dye a better resistance to photobleaching. The Ag-core system showed a sizable improvement in the limit of detection at 2 nM (0.4 ppb) compared to 50 nM (10 ppb) in silica-only colloids, and its effectiveness for natural water analysis was demonstrated. Overall, the reported nanoarchitecture hints at the potential of MEF for heavy metal detection by fluorescence detection.

Abstract
A new near-infrared (NIR) probe based on a coumarinyl ligand (CL) was designed and synthesized. The probe CL can be used for simultaneous fluorescent turn-on and colorimetric detection of Hg2+ and Ag+ in ethanol/water medium. Colorless solution of probe CL changed to light yellow or dark yellow after addition of Hg2+ or Ag+ ions. Meanwhile the maximum absorption band shifted from 379 nm to 404 nm and the intensity increased enormously (for Hg2+) or moderately (for Ag+). Probe CL displayed an extraordinarily large Stokes shift of 316 nm and addition of Hg2+ or Ag+ to probe CL induced enhancement in the intensity of fluorescence emission at 695 nm by 15 or 8 fold. The detection limit of CL for Hg2+ and Ag+ ions is 0.83 and 8.8 μM, respectively. The applicable pH for sensing Hg2+ by probe CL is in a broad range of 2-12. Application of probe CL for in vitro U87MG cell imaging to detect Hg2+ ions was confirmed.

Abstract
Urinary mercury levels are the most reliable indicators of mercury exposure but identifying them requires complex techniques and heavy instruments. In this research, we reported a simple and convenient urinary mercury analysis method using a readily available office scanner. Probe MP-1 synthesized by the reaction of resorufin and dimethylthiophosphinoyl chloride revealed Hg2+-selective chromogenic and fluorescent signaling behavior. Signaling was realized through Hg2+-induced deprotection of the phosphinothioate protecting group in the resorufin-based probe MP-1 to yield the parent fluorochrome. A pronounced colorimetric response of color change from light yellow to pink alongside a turn-on type fluorescence enhancement was perceived exclusively toward Hg2+ ions over other metal ions and anions. The colorimetry provided a more advantageous ratiometric approach than the simple fluorometric analysis exhibiting an off–on type response, with a detection limit of 12 nM (2.4 ppb). The Hg2+ signaling of the MP-1 probe was not disturbed by the presence of coexisting metal ions and anions. The sensitive and convenient diagnosis of clinically important neurological symptoms and fatal inorganic mercury levels in urine was successfully demonstrated using a standard office scanner. A Hg2+ selective signaling probe, resorufin phosphinothioate, for the colorimetric diagnosis of clinically elevated mercury levels in urine samples using an office scanner was developed.![]()
