Synthesis of Magnetite-Based Polymers as Mercury and Anion Sensors Using Single Electron Transfer-Living Radical Polymerization

A Simplified and Efficient Method for Production of Manganese Ferrite Magnetic Nanoparticles and Their Application in DNA Isolation

A simplified, fast, and effective production method has been developed for the synthesis of manganese ferrite (MnFe₂O₄) magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). In addition to the wide applicability of MnFe₂O₄ MNPs, this work also reports their application in DNA isolation for the first time. An ultrasonic-cavitation-assisted combustion method was applied in the synthesis of MnFe₂O₄ MNPs at different furnace temperatures (573 K, 623 K, 673 K, and 773 K) to optimize the particles' properties. It was shown that MnFe₂O₄ nanoparticles synthesized at 573 K consist of a spinel phase only with adequate size and zeta potential distributions and superparamagnetic properties. It was also demonstrated that superparamagnetic manganese ferrite nanoparticles bind DNA in buffer with a high NaCl concentration (2.5 M), and the DNA desorbs from the MNPs by decreasing the NaCl concentration of the elution buffer. This resulted in a DNA yield comparable to that of commercial DNA extraction products. Both the DNA concentration measurements and electrophoresis confirmed that a high amount of isolated bacterial plasmid DNA (pDNA) with adequate purity can be extracted with MnFe₂O₄ (573 K) nanoparticles by applying the DNA extraction method proposed in this article.

SI-ATRP Decoration of Magnetic Nanoparticles with PHEMA and Post-Polymerization Modification with Folic Acid for Tumor Cells' Specific Targeting

Targeted nanocarriers could reach new levels of drug delivery, bringing new tools for personalized medicine. It is known that cancer cells overexpress folate receptors on the cell surface compared to healthy cells, which could be used to create new nanocarriers with specific targeting moiety. In addition, magnetic nanoparticles can be guided under the influence of an external magnetic field in different areas of the body, allowing their precise localization. The main purpose of this paper was to decorate the surface of magnetic nanoparticles with poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) by surface-initiated atomic transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) followed by covalent bonding of folic acid to side groups of the polymer to create a high specificity magnetic nanocarrier with increased internalization capacity in tumor cells. The biocompatibility of the nanocarriers was demonstrated by testing them on the NHDF cell line and folate-dependent internalization capacity was tested on three tumor cell lines: MCF-7, HeLa and HepG2. It has also been shown that a higher concentration of folic acid covalently bound to the polymer leads to a higher internalization in tumor cells compared to healthy cells. Last but not least, magnetic resonance imaging was used to highlight the magnetic properties of the functionalized nanoparticles obtained.

Theoretical and experimental studies on uranium(vi) adsorption using phosphine oxide-coated magnetic nanoadsorbent

In this study, novel Cyanex-923-coated magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4@Cyanex-923) were prepared, comprehensively characterized, and employed for uranium(vi) ion adsorption from aqueous solutions. FTIR and TGA data confirmed that Fe3O4 has successfully gained Cyanex-923 surface functionality. Particle size and morphological studies via DLS, HR-TEM, and SEM showed uniform-dispersed quasi-spherical nanoparticles with a mean diameter of ca. 44 nm. Magnetism measurement data revealed the superparamagnetic properties of the Fe3O4@Cyanex-923 nanoadsorbent. The effect of different experimental settings on the adsorption efficiency was studied to determine the best operational conditions. The experimental results were analyzed using Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherms; where the adsorption data obeyed the Langmuir model showing a theoretical adsorption capacity of 429.185 mg g-1 at 298 K. Kinetics data analysis revealed a fast adsorption process that could reach equilibrium within 60 min and is well-fitted to the pseudo-2nd-order model. Temperature affected the adsorption process and the thermodynamic data indicated that uranium(vi) adsorption was spontaneous and exothermic. Fe3O4@Cyanex-923 nanoparticles displayed a good regeneration behavior over three sequential adsorption-desorption cycles. The Fe3O4@Cyanex-923 nanoadsorbent showed a high uranium adsorption capacity, fast equilibration time, economic nature, good reusability, and easy separation; making it a promising candidate for uranium(vi) removal from nuclear waste streams.
