Comparative Study on the Formation and Oxidation-Level Control of Three-Dimensional Conductive Nanofilms for Gas Sensor Applications

A controllably fabricated polypyrrole nanorods network by doping a tetra-β-carboxylate cobalt phthalocyanine tetrasodium salt for enhanced ammonia sensing at room temperature

The morphology adjustment and functional doping optimization of polypyrrole (PPy) are of great significance in improving its gas sensing performance. Here, the PPy-0.5TcCoPc nanorods with a uniform dispersed 3-D network were prepared using one-step in situ polymerization using the electrostatic interaction between dopant counterion substituents in tetra-β-carboxylate cobalt phthalocyanine tetrasodium salt (TcCoPcTs) with larger space structure and pyrrole (Py) molecules, in which TcCoPcTs is not only used as a dopant molecule crosslinking PPy chains to obtain a 3-D network, thus improving the conductivity, but also as a sensor accelerator to improve the gas-sensing performance. The resulting PPy-TcCoPc hybrid exhibits superior NH3-sensing properties than PPy and tetra-β-carboxylate cobalt phthalocyanine (TcCoPc) under the same test conditions, especially the PPy-0.5TcCoPc sensor shows ultrafast response/recovery time to 50 ppm NH3 (8.1 s/370.8 s), low detection limit of 8.1 ppb and excellent gas selectivity at room temperature (20 °C). Besides, the PPy-0.5TcCoPc sensor also maintains superior response (49.3% to 50 ppm NH3), humidity resistance and conspicuous stability over 45 days. The excellent NH3-sensing performance of the PPy-0.5TcCoPc hybrid arises from the excellent gas selectivity of TcCoPc, the remarkable response mechanism between PPy and NH3, the high electrical conductivity, abundant active sites and good electron transport ability of the unique 3-D network with large specific surface area. The morphology regulation and functional doping optimization strategy of TcCoPcTs doped PPy broaden the research direction of ideal gas sensor materials.

Self-Assembled 2D Networks of Metal Oxide Nanomaterials Enabling Sub-ppm Level Breathalyzers

For extremely sensitive acetone sensors, here, we introduced an alcohol-assisted surfactant-free Langmuir-Blodgett process to rapidly assemble a single-layered two-dimensional (2D) network as a suitable percolation strategy of metal oxide semiconductor nanomaterials. The single-layered 2D network formation mechanism was investigated using zinc oxide (ZnO) nanobeads (NBs). Furthermore, the correlation between the response of the gas sensor and the average percolation number of the ZnO NBs, controlled by multi-stacking the 2D network, was investigated. It was inferred that a reduction in the number of percolations led to maximization of the response. Additionally, the versatility of the optimal percolation strategy was experimentally verified by confirming similar results to that achieved with ZnO NBs when utilizing different sizes, shapes, and compositions of metal oxides. Finally, the practical effectiveness of our extremely sensitive strategy was solidified by illustrating the response enhancement in a commercial exhalation diagnostic system that measures the amount of acetone in only 1 mL of exhalation.

Hollow Polypyrrole Composite Synthesis for Detection of Trace-Level Toxic Herbicide

In this work, we successfully demonstrated the fabrication of a chemical sensor for toxic 1,1-dimethyl-3-phenylurea (fenuron) by using a hollow polypyrrole composite film. Here, we studied the interaction between negatively charged phosphate anions enclosed in the film with positively charged nitrogen atoms present in the fenuron. The electrochemical response of the film was characterized by cyclic voltammetry in which, interestingly, we observed that the bigger alkyl aryl sulphonate ions were replaced by smaller phosphate ions with the creation of hollow/pore composite films. Confirmation for ion replacement in the film and porosity of the film were studied by elemental analysis and field emission scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The tuning of hydrophilic to hydrophobic nature of the hollow composite film was tested by the wettability test (contact angle measurement). The electrocatalytic materials, as well as the fenuron sensing conditions such as pH and film thickness, were wisely optimized on glassy carbon (GC) electrodes for better performance. We can enhance the fenuron sensitivity by over 5 times as compared to that on the GC substrate. To our knowledge, this is the first electrochemical fenuron sensor based on a hollow polymer film by differential pulse voltammetry which can detect lower concentrations and show quick response compared to other reports. This method has potential applications in the electrochemical sensing platform with good sensitive and selective analysis in agriculture groundwater samples.
