Magnetic nanomaterials as an effective absorbent material for removal of fluoride concentration in water: a review

The rapid increases in industrialization and populations are significant sources of water contamination. The speed with which contamination of groundwater and surface water occurs is becoming a serious problem and poses a significant obstacle for water stakeholders. Heavy metals, organic, and inorganic contaminants in the form of suspended and dissolved materials are just a few of the contaminants that can be found in drinking water. One of the most common contaminants in the water is fluoride, which is responsible for numerous toxic diseases. Different traditional techniques, for example, coagulation, ion exchange, absorption, and membrane filtration are being used to dispose of fluoride from water. However, nanomaterials such as magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) are very efficient, reliable, cost-effective, and stable materials to replace traditional water treatment techniques. There has been an increase in interest in the application of nanomaterials to the purification of drinking water over the past few decades. The use of magnetic NPs, such as metal and metal oxide NPs, to remove fluoride ions and organic matter from water is highlighted in this review article. Also, this section also discusses the properties, benefits and drawbacks, and difficulties of utilizing magnetic NPs in the process of purifying drinking water.

Development of an automated colorimeter controlled by Raspberry Pi4

A low-cost new instrument to carry out automated colorimetric analysis has been developed. The device consists of a carousel sampler, built by a 3D-printer, and a Raspberry Pi4-controlled signal measurement module based on the RGBC (red, green, blue and clear) responses of a TCS34725 color light-to-digital converter with IR filter. The device has been tested with calibration standards of different food dyes (Tartrazine, Red Allure AC and Brilliant Blue FCF) and three food samples containing one of each food dye. The new device provides R² > 0.995 and a LOD of 1.1, 1.4 and 0.1 μmol L^-1 for each food dye, respectively. The results are statistically comparable to those obtained with a conventional benchtop spectrophotometer. The proposed device achieves a reduction in sample and waste volume and in analysis time, minimizes the use of energy, and allows in situ measurements, being an automated method it is safer for operators in comparison to the reference method, yielding similar analytical results and following the principles of green analytical chemistry.

Ultrasensitive colorimetric detection of fluoride and arsenate in water and mammalian cells using recyclable metal oxacalixarene probe: a lateral flow assay

Globally 3 billion people are consuming water with moderately high concentrations of fluoride and arsenic. The development of a simple point of care (PoC) device or home device for the detection of fluoride/arsenic ensures safety before consuming water. Till date, lateral flow assay (LFA) based PoC devices can detect nucleic acids, viruses and diseases. An aluminium complex of rhodamine B functionalized oxacalix[4]arene (L) was designed to execute the LFA-based PoC device. Initially, Al³⁺ and Fe³⁺ ions were involved in complexation with the rhodamine B functionalized oxacalix[4]arene (L), resulting C₁ (L-Al³⁺) and C₂ (L-Fe³⁺) complexes respectively. The receptor L, as well as the probes (C₁, C₂), were characterized thoroughly using mass spectroscopy, FTIR, NMR, and EA. C₁ and C₂ were further utilized as recyclable probes for the detection of aqueous fluoride (21 ppb) and arsenate (1.92 ppb) respectively. The computational calculation indicates that upon complexation, the spirolactam ring opening at the rhodamine B site leads to optoelectronic changes. The consistency of LFA-based portable sensing device has been tested with water samples, synthetic fluoride standards and dental care products like toothpaste and mouthwash with concentrations ≥ 3 ppm. Moreover, fixed cell imaging experiments were performed to ascertain the in-vitro sensing phenomena.

A free customizable tool for easy integration of microfluidics and smartphones

The integration of smartphones and microfluidics is nowadays the best possible route to achieve effective point-of-need testing (PONT), a concept increasingly demanded in the fields of human health, agriculture, food safety, and environmental monitoring. Nevertheless, efforts are still required to integrally seize all the advantages of smartphones, as well as to share the developments in easily adoptable formats. For this purpose, here we present the free platform appuente that was designed for the easy integration of microfluidic chips, smartphones, and the cloud. It includes a mobile app for end users, which provides chip identification and tracking, guidance and control, processing, smart-imaging, result reporting and cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) integration. The platform also includes a web app for PONT developers, to easily customize their mobile apps and manage the data of administered tests. Three application examples were used to validate appuente: a dummy grayscale detector that mimics quantitative colorimetric tests, a root elongation assay for pesticide toxicity assessment, and a lateral flow immunoassay for leptospirosis detection. The platform openly offers fast prototyping of smartphone apps to the wide community of lab-on-a-chip developers, and also serves as a friendly framework for new techniques, IoT integration and further capabilities. Exploiting these advantages will certainly help to enlarge the use of PONT with real-time connectivity in the near future.

Versatile Covalent Postsynthetic Modification of Metal Organic Frameworks via Thermal Condensation for Fluoride Sensing in Waters

Having access to safe drinking water is one of the 17 sustainable development goals defined by the United Nations (UN). However, many settlements around the globe have limited access to drinkable water due to non-anthropogenic pollution of the water sources. One of those pollutants is fluoride, which can induce major health problems. In this manuscript, we report on a post synthetic functionalization of metal organic frameworks for the sensing of fluoride in water. The proposed thermal condensation methodology allows for a high yield of functionalization using few steps, reducing reagent costs and generating minimal by-products. We identified a Rhodamine B functionalized Al-BDC-NH2 metal organic framework as one particularly suitable for fluoride detection in water.

The Long and Bright Path of a Lanthanide MOF: From Basics towards the Application

The development of portable, reliable, and low-cost sensors for assessing the quality of natural water sources is of high relevance in developing countries as they can serve as an intermediate solution prior to the building of permanent potable water distribution infrastructure. These sensors should be simple to operate by non-trained operators and easy to manufacture locally. Lanthanide-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a trustable platform due to their intense emission in regions of the visible spectra and their high sensitivity to fluorides in water. Cotton was chosen as a substrate due to its high hydrophilicity which, together with the highly porous nature of the MOF, allows for shorter reaction times. The modified cotton was characterized by XRD, SEM as well as XAFS, hence probing the presence of [Tb(BTC)₆ (H₂ O)] (Tb-BTC) attachment to cotton. Changes in the emission when Tb-BTC modified cotton was exposed to water and aqueous fluoride solutions were monitored as a function of time. Crystalline phase changes were identified that correlated to structural information. Finally, the Tb-BTC modified cotton was used to build a fluoride demonstrator sensor with a linear response of up to 10 mg L^-1 and a limit of detection of 0.8 mg L^-1 , making it suitable for drinking water analysis under international regulations.
