Wireless Addressable Cortical Microstimulators Powered by Near-Infrared Harvesting

Versatile On-Chip Programming of Circuit Hardware for Wearable and Implantable Biomedical Microdevices

Wearable and implantable microscale electronic sensors have been developed for a range of biomedical applications. The sensors, typically millimeter size silicon microchips, are sought for multiple sensing functions but are severely constrained by size and power. To address these challenges, a hardware programmable application-specific integrated circuit design is proposed and post-process methodology is exemplified by the design of battery-less wireless microchips. Specifically, both mixed-signal and radio frequency circuits are designed by incorporating metal fuses and anti-fuses on the top metal layer to enable programmability of any number of features in hardware of the system-on-chip (SoC) designs. This is accomplished in post-foundry editing by combining laser ablation and focused ion beam processing. The programmability provided by the technique can significantly accelerate the SoC chip development process by enabling the exploration of multiple internal circuit parameters without the requirement of additional programming pads or extra power consumption. As examples, experimental results are described for sub-millimeter size complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor microchips being developed for wireless electroencephalogram sensors and as implantable microstimulators for neural interfaces. The editing technique can be broadly applicable for miniaturized biomedical wearables and implants, opening up new possibilities for their expedited development and adoption in the field of smart healthcare.

Evolution of Biotelemetry in Medical Devices: From Radio Pills to mm-Scale Implants

The advent of semiconductor technology in the mid-20th century created unprecedented opportunities to develop a new generation of small-scale wireless medical sensing devices that can support remote monitoring of patients' vital signs. The first radio pills were developed as early as the 1950's using only a few transistors. These swallowable capsules could sense and wirelessly transmit vital parameters from inside the human body. Since then we have witnessed the rapid progress of medical devices driven by the evolution of semiconductor technology, from single-transistor oscillators to complex mixed-signal multi-channel and multi-modal systems. This paper retraces the evolution of biotelemetry devices from their very early inception to the smart miniaturized systems of modern days, focusing on semiconductor-enabled sensing methods and circuits developed over the last six decades. The paper also includes the author's perspective on current and future trends in the development of CMOS-based biotelemeters, focusing on concepts of implant modularity, miniaturization and hybrid energy harvesting solutions.

New Era of Electroceuticals: Clinically Driven Smart Implantable Electronic Devices Moving towards Precision Therapy

In the name of electroceuticals, bioelectronic devices have transformed and become essential for dealing with all physiological responses. This significant advancement is attributable to its interdisciplinary nature from engineering and sciences and also the progress in micro and nanotechnologies. Undoubtedly, in the future, bioelectronics would lead in such a way that diagnosing and treating patients' diseases is more efficient. In this context, we have reviewed the current advancement of implantable medical electronics (electroceuticals) with their immense potential advantages. Specifically, the article discusses pacemakers, neural stimulation, artificial retinae, and vagus nerve stimulation, their micro/nanoscale features, and material aspects as value addition. Over the past years, most researchers have only focused on the electroceuticals metamorphically transforming from a concept to a device stage to positively impact the therapeutic outcomes. Herein, the article discusses the smart implants' development challenges and opportunities, electromagnetic field effects, and their potential consequences, which will be useful for developing a reliable and qualified smart electroceutical implant for targeted clinical use. Finally, this review article highlights the importance of wirelessly supplying the necessary power and wirelessly triggering functional electronic circuits with ultra-low power consumption and multi-functional advantages such as monitoring and treating the disease in real-time.

Injectable wireless microdevices: challenges and opportunities

In the past three decades, we have witnessed unprecedented progress in wireless implantable medical devices that can monitor physiological parameters and interface with the nervous system. These devices are beginning to transform healthcare. To provide an even more stable, safe, effective, and distributed interface, a new class of implantable devices is being developed; injectable wireless microdevices. Thanks to recent advances in micro/nanofabrication techniques and powering/communication methodologies, some wireless implantable devices are now on the scale of dust (< 0.5 mm), enabling their full injection with minimal insertion damage. Here we review state-of-the-art fully injectable microdevices, discuss their injection techniques, and address the current challenges and opportunities for future developments.
