Contactless and Simultaneous Measurement of Water and Acid Contaminations in Oil Using a Flexible Microstrip Sensor

Ultrahigh-sensitivity multi-parameter tacrolimus solution detection based on an anchor planar millifluidic microwave biosensor

To detect drug concentration in tacrolimus solution, an anchor planar millifluidic microwave (APMM) biosensor is proposed. The millifluidic system integrated with the sensor enables accurate and efficient detection while eliminating interference caused by the fluidity of the tacrolimus sample. Different concentrations (10-500 ng mL^-1) of the tacrolimus analyte were introduced into the millifluidic channel, where it completely interacts with the radio frequency patch electromagnetic field, thereby effectively and sensitively modifying the resonant frequency and amplitude of the transmission coefficient. Experimental results indicate that the sensor has an extremely low limit of detection (LoD) of 0.12 pg mL^-1 and a frequency detection resolution (FDR) of 1.59 (MHz (ng mL^-1)). The greater the FDR and the lower the LoD, the more the feasibility of a label-free biosensing method. Regression analysis revealed a strong linear correlation (R² = 0.992) between the concentration of tacrolimus and the frequency difference of the two resonant peaks of APMM. In addition, the difference in the reflection coefficient between the two formants was measured and calculated, and a strong linear correlation (R² = 0.998) was found between the difference and tacrolimus concentration. Five measurements were performed on each individual sample of tacrolimus to validate the biosensor's high repeatability. Consequently, the proposed biosensor is a potential candidate for the early detection of tacrolimus drug concentration levels in organ transplant recipients. This study presents a simple method for constructing microwave biosensors with high sensitivity and rapid response.

Contactless Sensing of Water Properties for Smart Monitoring of Pipelines

A key milestone for the pervasive diffusion of wireless sensing nodes for smart monitoring of water quality and quantity in distribution networks is the simplification of the installation of sensors. To address this aspect, we demonstrate how two basic contactless sensors, such as piezoelectric transducers and strip electrodes (in a longitudinal interdigitated configuration to sense impedance inside and outside of the pipe with potential for impedimetric leak detection), can be easily clamped on plastic pipes to enable the measurement of multiple parameters without contact with the fluid and, thus, preserving the integrity of the pipe. Here we report the measurement of water flow rate (up to 24 m³/s) and temperature with ultrasounds and of the pipe filling fraction (capacitance at 1 MHz with ~cm³ resolution) and ionic conductivity (resistance at 20 MHz from 700 to 1400 μS/cm) by means of impedance. The equivalent impedance model of the sensor is discussed in detail. Numerical finite-element simulations, carried out to optimize the sensing parameters such as the sensing frequency, confirm the lumped models and are matched by experimental results. In fact, a 6 m long, 30 L demonstration hydraulic loop was built to validate the sensors in realistic conditions (water speed of 1 m/s) monitoring a pipe segment of 0.45 m length and 90 mm diameter (one of the largest ever reported in the literature). Tradeoffs in sensors accuracy, deployment, and fabrication, for instance, adopting single-sided flexible PCBs as electrodes protected by Kapton on the external side and experimentally validated, are discussed as well.

Effect of Fe/Fe3O4 Nanoparticles Stray Field on the Microwave Magnetoresistance of a CoFeB/Ta/CoFeB Synthetic Ferrimagnet

The effect of the stray field of Fe/Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles on the angular dependence of the microwave absorption derivative in CoFeB/Ta/CoFeB synthetic ferrimagnetic structures and CoFeB films with perpendicular anisotropy is analyzed, and its application for sensor technology is proposed. The effective field of the "platform-particles" system controlled by the magnetic dipole interaction of the CoFeB-Fe/Fe₃O₄ system decreased to zero in areas where the platform was magnetostatically coupled with nanoparticles. Micromagnetic modeling demonstrated the distribution of magnetization and resistance in local areas of CoFeB/Ta/CoFeB structures under the nanoparticles. The microwave absorption derivative can be used as an indicator of local magnetization switching of the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) structure under scattering fields of NPs or magnetically labeled cells. The limiting sensitivity of the detection method was 2.4 × 10⁷ nanoparticles, which covered the spin-valve surface. We have proposed to combine the advantages of a GMR sensor with wireless technology of microwave reading of magnetoresistance for the detection of magnetically labeled cells.

Substrate-Integrated Waveguide Microwave Sensor for Water-in-Diesel Fuel Applications

A water-in-diesel microwave sensor based on a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) microwave applicator is designed and characterized in this study. The interaction between the microwave electromagnetic field and the diesel fuel contaminated with small concentrations of water is obtained via suitable radiating slots placed on the top of an SIW waveguiding structure. The SIW applicator working frequency is chosen by observing the behavior of the complex dielectric permittivity of the fuel–water blend based on a preliminary wide band investigation. The performances of the SIW microwave sensor are evaluated in terms of scattering parameter modulus |S21| as a function of the water concentration in ppm. The best sensitivity Δ|S21|Δρ=1.42 mdB/ppm is obtained at a frequency of f=9.76 GHz, with a coefficient of determination R2=0.94. The sensor is low-cost, low profile and ensures a good sensitivity for constant and real-time monitoring.

Nanostrip flexible microwave enzymatic biosensor for noninvasive epidermal glucose sensing

Microwave sensors based on microstrip antennas are promising as wearable devices because of their flexibility and wireless communication compatibility. However, their sensitivity is limited due to the reduced sensor size and the potential of biochemical monitoring needs to be explored. In this work, we present a new concept to enhance the microwave signals using nanostrip-based metamaterials. The introduction of the nanostrip structures was achieved by theory and simulations. Experiments prove their enhancement of the electric field and sensing response in the characteristic gigahertz (GHz) wave band. Ordered nanostrips were fabricated on a plastic substrate through a simple nanoscale printing approach. Glucose oxidase is directly doped into the nanostrips, which enables a flexible wearable enzymatic biosensor for glucose sensing. Sensing experiments demonstrated that the nanostrip biosensor gives excellent performance for glucose detection, including high sensitivity, fast response, low detection limit, high affinity, and low power consumption. The applicability of the nanostrip-based sensor as a wearable epidermal device for real-time noninvasive monitoring of glucose in sweat is verified as well.
