Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents Based on Choline Chloride and Phenolic Compounds as Efficient Bioadhesives and Corrosion Protectors

Extraction, Characterization, and In Vitro Biological Activity of Polyphenols from Discarded Young Fig Fruits Based on Deep Eutectic Solvents

(1) Background: Discarded young fig fruits (DYFFs) result in a waste of resources, such as sparse fruits and residual fruits, and there has been no research on the relationship between phenolic compounds and biological activity in DYFFs (2) Methods: Different deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and 80% ethanol were used to prepare DYFF extracts, and polyphenol extraction efficiency and bioactivities in the DYFFs extracts were compared. (3) Results: More than 1700 phytochemicals were identified in DYFFs, and thirteen of these typical phenolic compounds were analyzed quantitatively; chlorogenic acid, rutin, luteolin 8-C-glucoside, and epicatechin are the main polyphenols in DYFFs, especially chlorogenic acid with 2720-7980 mg/kg. Ferulic acid, caffeic acid, epicatechin, (+)-catechin, luteolin 8-C-glucoside, rutin, hesperetin, and chlorogenic acid showed different degrees of correlation with in vitro antioxidant activity. Moreover, the highest total phenol content found in the extracts of ChCl-Ethylene glycol (Choline chloride:Ethylene glycol = 1:2) was 8.88 mg GAE/g DW, and all quantitatively analyzed phenolic compounds had high levels in various DESs and 80% ethanol. The 80% ethanol and Choline chloride (ChCl) solvent system showed the greatest antioxidant properties, and the Choline chloride-Urea (Choline chloride: Urea = 1:2) extract of DYFFs exhibited the highest inhibitory activity. (4) Conclusions: DESs have demonstrated potential as promising green solvents, especially the ChCl solvent system, which facilitates the extraction of polyphenols.

Freezing-Tolerant Supramolecular Adhesives from Tannic Acid-Based Low-Transition-Temperature Mixtures

Natural polyphenols like tannic acid (TA) have recently emerged as multifunctional building blocks for designing advanced materials. Herein, we show the benefits of having TA in a dynamic liquid state using low-transition-temperature mixtures (LTTMs) for developing freezing-tolerant glues. TA was combined with betaine or choline chloride to create LTTMs, which direct the self-assembly of guanosine into supramolecular viscoelastic materials with high adhesion. Molecular dynamics simulations showed that the structural properties of the material are linked to strong hydrogen bonding in TA-betaine and TA-choline chloride mixtures. Notably, long-term and repeatable adhesion was achieved even at -196 °C due to the binding ability of TA's catechol and gallol units and the mixtures' glass transition temperature. Additionally, the adhesives demonstrated injectability and low toxicity against fibroblasts in vitro. These traits reveal the potential of these systems as bioadhesives for tissue repair, opening new avenues for creating multifunctional soft materials with bioactive properties.

Imidazolium-Based Polymeric Ionic Liquids with Short Alkyl Chains as Green Corrosion Inhibitors for Mild Steel in 1 M HCl: Experimental and Theoretical Investigations

A novel polymeric ionic liquid (PDBA-IL-NH2) using imidazolium ionic liquids with short alkyl chains as monomers and two control ionic liquids (PDBA-IL-OH and PIL-NH2) were synthesized. Their inhibition properties and mechanisms were explored via surface analysis, weight loss tests, electrochemical studies, and adsorption isotherm analysis. The corrosion inhibition efficiency (CIE) of PDBA-IL-NH2 gradually increased with increasing concentration, and the largest efficiency was 94.67% at 100 ppm. At the same concentration (50 ppm), the corrosion inhibition abilities of inhibitors were in the order of PDBA-IL-NH2 > PDBA-IL-OH > PIL-NH2 > IL-NH2. Based on the experimental investigation, the synergistic effect of electrostatic interaction, protonation, and electron donor-acceptor interaction facilitated the intensive entanglement and coverage of PDBA-IL-NH2 with the reticulated form on the metal, and the generated densest films protected the metal from the corrosive media. Ultimately, the theoretical results of molecular dynamics simulations and quantum chemical study were in high agreement with the experimental data, which confirmed the proposed inhibition mechanisms on the microscopic scale. This study contributed valuable perspectives to the design of efficient and ecofriendly corrosion inhibitors.

A Comprehensive Analysis of Diversity, Structure, Biosynthesis and Extraction of Biologically Active Tannins from Various Plant-Based Materials Using Deep Eutectic Solvents

This paper explores the emerging subject of extracting tannins from various plant sources using deep eutectic solvents (DESs). Tannins are widely used in the food and feed industries as they have outstanding antioxidant qualities and greatly enhance the flavor and nutritional content of a wide range of food products. Organic solvents are frequently used in traditional extraction techniques, which raises questions about their safety for human health and the environment. DESs present a prospective substitute because of their low toxicity, adaptability, and environmental friendliness. The fundamental ideas supporting the application of DESs in the extraction of tannins from a range of plant-based materials frequently used in daily life are all well covered in this paper. Furthermore, this paper covers the impact of extraction parameters on the yield of extracted tannins, as well as possible obstacles and directions for future research in this emerging subject. This includes challenges such as high viscosity, intricated recovery of compounds, thermal degradation, and the occurrence of esterification. An extensive summary of the diversity, structure, biosynthesis, distribution, and roles of tannins in plants is given in this paper. Additionally, this paper thoroughly examines various bioactivities of tannins and their metabolites.

Tracheal regeneration and mesenchymal stem cell augmenting potential of natural polyphenol-loaded gelatinmethacryloyl bioadhesive

Hydrogels incorporating natural biopolymer and adhesive substances have extensively been used to develop bioactive drugs and to design cells encapsulating sturdy structure for biomedical applications. However, the conjugation of the adhesive in most hydrogels is insufficient to maintain long-lasting biocompatibility inadequate to accelerate internal organ tissue repair in the essential native cellular microenvironment. The current work elaborates the synthesis of charged choline-catechol ionic liquid (BIL) adhesive and a hydrogel with an electronegative atom rich polyphenol (PU)-laden gelatinmethacryloyl (GelMA) to improve the structural bioactivities for in vivo tracheal repair by inducing swift crosslinking along with durable mechanical and tissue adhesive properties. It was observed that bioactive BIL and PU exhibited potent antioxidant (IC 50 % of 7.91 μg/mL and 24.55 μg/mL) and antibacterial activity against E. coli, P. aeruginosa and S. aureus. The novel integration of photocurable GelMA-BIL-PU revealed outstanding mechanical strength, biodegradability and sustained drug release. The in vitro study showed exceptional cell migration and proliferation in HBECs, while in vivo investigation of the GelMA-BIL-PU hydrogel on a rat's tracheal model revealed remarkable tracheal reconstruction, concurrently reducing tissue inflammation. Furthermore, the optimized GelMA-BIL-PU injectable adhesive bioink blend demonstrated superior MSCs migration and proliferation, which could be a strong candidate for developing stem cell-rich biomaterials to address multiple organ defects.

Recent Advances and Developments in Injectable Conductive Polymer Gels for Bioelectronics

Soft matter bioelectronics represents an emerging and interdisciplinary research frontier aiming to harness the synergy between biology and electronics for advanced diagnostic and healthcare applications. In this context, a whole family of soft gels have been recently developed with self-healing ability and tunable biological mimetic features to act as a tissue-like space bridging the interface between the electronic device and dynamic biological fluids and body tissues. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of electroactive polymer gels, formed by noncovalent intermolecular interactions and dynamic covalent bonds, as injectable electroactive gels, covering their synthesis, characterization, and applications. First, hydrogels crafted from conducting polymers (poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene) (PEDOT), polyaniline (PANi), and polypyrrole (PPy))-based networks which are connected through physical interactions (e.g., hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, hydrophobic interactions) or dynamic covalent bonds (e.g., imine bonds, Schiff-base, borate ester bonds) are addressed. Injectable hydrogels involving hybrid networks of polymers with conductive nanomaterials (i.e., graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, metallic nanoparticles, etc.) are also discussed. Besides, it also delves into recent advancements in injectable ionic liquid-integrated gels (iongels) and deep eutectic solvent-integrated gels (eutectogels), which present promising avenues for future research. Finally, the current applications and future prospects of injectable electroactive polymer gels in cutting-edge bioelectronic applications ranging from tissue engineering to biosensing are outlined.

Lignin-Derivative Ionic Liquids as Corrosion Inhibitors

Corrosion is a significant problem that negatively affects a wide range of structures and buildings, resulting in their premature failure, which causes safety hazards and significant economic loss. For this reason, various approaches have been developed to prevent or minimize the effects of corrosion, including corrosion inhibitors. Recently, biobased inhibitors have gained a certain interest thanks to their unique properties, eco-friendliness, and availability. Among all the green precursors, lignin is of particular interest, being a natural polymer that can be obtained from different sources including agricultural residues. Corrosion inhibitors based on ionic liquids (ILs) also present interesting advantages, such as low volatility and high tunability. If combined, it may be possible to obtain new lignin-based ILs that present interesting corrosion inhibitor properties. In this work, the inhibition properties of new biobased lignin ILs and the influence of anions and cations on the corrosion of mild steel in an aqueous solution of 0.01 M NaCl were investigated by Potentiostatic Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (PEIS) and Cyclic Potentiodynamic Polarization (CPP). Moreover, the surface was characterized using SEM, EDS, and optical profilometry. The IL choline syringate showed promising performance, reducing the corrosion current after 24 h immersion in 0.01 M sodium chloride, from 1.66 µA/cm² for the control to 0.066 µA/cm² with 10 mM of the IL present. In addition to its performance as a corrosion inhibitor, both components of this IL also meet or exceed the current additional desired properties of such compounds, being readily available, and well tolerated in organisms and the environment.

Direct ink writing of PEDOT eutectogels as substrate-free dry electrodes for electromyography

Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) are a new class of ionic conductive compounds attracting significant attention as greener alternatives to costly ionic liquids. Herein, we developed novel mixed ionic-electronic conducting materials by simple mixing of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and various DES as additives. The DES addition induces the supramolecular assembly and gelification of PEDOT:PSS forming eutectogels triggered by extensive hydrogen bonding and charge stabilization. The eutectogels feature boosts the mixed ionic-electronic conductivity of PEDOT:PSS up to 368 S cm^-1, unveiling great potential as flexible bioelectronics. All the PEDOT:PSS/DES gels showed shear-thinning behavior and viscosity values ranging from 100 to 1000 Pa s. The eutectogels show good injectability with almost instantaneous elastic recovery, making them ideal materials for direct ink writing (DIW). As proof of that, PEDOT:PSS/DES (choline chloride:lactic acid) was 3D printed in different patterns, annealed at high temperature, and assembled into adhesive electrodes. This way tattoos-like electrodes, denoted as Eutecta2 were fabricated and placed in vivo on the forearm and the thumb of human volunteers for electromyography measurements. Eutecta2 hexagonal patterns showed excellent conformability, and their signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was higher than Ag/AgCl commercial electrodes for thumb motion measurements. Furthermore, forearm motion was measured after 14 days with similar values of SNR, demonstrating long-term stability and reusability. All in all, our findings revealed that DES could be used as inexpensive and safe additives to direct the self-assembly of PEDOT:PSS into supramolecular eutectogels inks for flexible bioelectronics.

Multifunctional Ionic Polymers from Deep Eutectic Monomers Based on Polyphenols

Herein we report a novel family of deep eutectic monomers and the corresponding polymers, made of (meth)acrylic ammonium salts and a series of biobased polyphenols bearing catechol or pyrogallol motifs. Phenolic chemistry allows modulating molecular interactions by tuning the ionic polymer properties from soft adhesive to tough materials. For instance, pyrogallol and hydrocaffeic acid-derived ionic polymers showed outstanding adhesiveness (>1 MPa), while tannic acid/gallic acid polymers with dense hydrogen bond distribution afforded ultratough elastomers (stretchability ≈1000% and strength ≈3 MPa). Additionally, phenolic polymeric deep eutectic solvents (polyDES) featured metal complexation ability, antibacterial properties, and fast processability by digital light 3D printing.

Bioadhesive eutectogels supporting drug nanocrystals for long-acting delivery to mucosal tissues

Eutectogels (Egels) are an emerging class of soft ionic materials outperforming traditional temperature-intolerant hydrogels and costly ionogels. Due to their excellent elasticity, non-volatile nature, and adhesion properties, Egels are attracting a great deal of interest in the biomedical space. Herein, we report the first example of adhesive Egels loading drug nanocrystals (Egel-NCs) for controlled delivery to mucosal tissues. These soft materials were prepared using gelatin, glycerine, a deep eutectic solvent (DES) based on choline hydrochloride and glycerol, and nanocrystallised curcumin, a model drug with potent antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities. We first explored the impact of the biopolymer concentration on the viscoelastic and mechanical properties of the networks. Thanks to the dynamic interactions between gelatin and the DES, the Egel showed excellent stretchability and elasticity (up to ≈160%), reversible gel-sol phase transition at mild temperature (≈50 ​°C), 3D-printing ability, and good adhesion to mucin protein (stickiness ≈40 ​kPa). In vitro release profiles demonstrated the ability of the NCs-based Egel to deliver curcumin for up to four weeks and deposit significantly higher drug amounts in excised porcine mucosa compared to the control cohort. All in all, this study opens new prospects in designing soft adhesive materials for long-acting drug delivery and paves the way to explore novel eutectic systems with multiple therapeutic applications.
