Effect of surface fluorination of TiO2 particles on photocatalitytic activity of a hybrid multilayer coating obtained by sol-gel method

A Super-Adhesive 2D Diamond Smart Nanofluid with Self-Healing Properties and Multifunctional Applications

Smart responsive materials are capable of responding to external stimuli and, compared to traditional materials, can be effectively reused and reduce usage costs in applications. However, smart responsive materials often face challenges such as the inability to repair extensive damage, instability in long-term performance, and inapplicability in extreme environments. This study combines 2D diamond nanosheets with organic fluorinated molecules to prepare a smart nanofluid (fluorinated diamond nanosheets, F-DN) with self-healing and self-adhesion properties. This smart nanofluid can be used to design various coatings for different applications. For example, coatings prepared on textured steel plates using the drop-casting method have excellent superhydrophobic and high oleophobic properties; coatings on titanium alloy plates achieve low friction and wear in the presence of lubricating additives of F-DN in perfluoropolyether (PFPE). Most impressively, coatings on steel plates not only provide effective corrosion resistance but also have the ability to self-heal significant damage (approximately 2 mm in width), withstand extremely low temperatures (-64 °C), and resist long-term corrosion factors (immersion in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution for 35 days). Additionally, it can act as a "coating glue" to repair extensive damage to other corrosion-resistant organic coatings and recover their original protective properties. Therefore, the smart nanofluid developed in this study offers diverse applications and presents new materials system for the future development of smart responsive materials.

Robust and Scalable In Vitro Surface Mineralization of Inert Polymers with a Rationally Designed Molecular Bridge

The artificial integration of inorganic materials onto polymers to create the analogues of natural biocomposites is an attractive field in materials science. However, due to significant diversity in the interfacial properties of two kinds of materials, advanced synthesis methods are quite complicated and the resultant materials are always vulnerable to external environments, which limits their application scenarios and makes them unsuitable for scalable production. Herein, we report a simple and universal approach to achieve robust and scalable surface mineralization of polymers using a rationally designed triple functional molecular bridge of fluorosilane, 3-[(perfluorohexyl sulfonyl) amino] propyltriethoxy silane (PFSS). In a two-step solution deposition, the fluoroalkyl and siloxane of the PFSS take charge of its adhesion and immobilization onto polymers by hydrophobic interaction and wrapping-like chemical cross-linking, and then the assembly and growth of inorganic nanoclusters for integration are achieved by strong chemical coordination of PFSS sulfonamide. The versatile mineralization of inorganic oxides (e.g., TiO₂, SiO₂, and Fe₂O₃) onto chemically inert polymer surfaces was realized very well. The resultant mineralized materials exhibit robust and multiple functionalities for hostile applications, such as hydrophilic membranes for removing oils in strong acidic and alkaline wastewaters, fabrics with advanced anti-bacteria for healthy wearing, and plates with strong mechanical performance for better use. Experimental results and theoretical calculations confirmed the homogenous distribution of the PFSS onto polymers via cross-linking for robust coordination with inorganic oxides. These results demonstrate a skillful enlightenment in the design of high-performance mineralized polymer materials used as membranes, fabrics, and medical devices.

Enhanced vapor transport in membrane distillation via functionalized carbon nanotubes anchored into electrospun nanofibres

To ascertain membrane distillation (MD) as an emerging desalination technology to meet the global water challenge, development of membranes with ideal material properties is crucial. Functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were anchored to nanofibres of electrospun membranes. Covalent modification and fluorination of CNTs improved their dispersibility and interfacial interaction with the polymer membrane, resulting in well-aligned CNTs inside crystalline fibres with superhydrophobicity. Consideration for the chemical/physical properties of the CNT composite membranes and calculation of their theoretical fluxes revealed the mechanism of MD: CNTs facilitated the repulsive force for Knudsen and molecular diffusions, reduced the boundary-layer effect in viscous flow, and assisted surface diffusion, allowing for fast vapor transport with anti-wetting. This study shows that the role of CNTs and an optimal composite ratio can be used to reduce the gap between theoretical and experimental approaches to desalination.

Fabrication of rod-like nanocapsules based on polylactide and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine for a drug delivery system

Rod-like nanocapsules were facilely fabricated based on a bio-based polymer via DOPA adhesion. The nanocapsules showed high drug-loading efficacies and controlled drug release depending on different pH buffer solutions.

Conjugated polymer/nanocrystal nanocomposites for renewable energy applications in photovoltaics and photocatalysis

Conjugated polymer/nanocrystal composites have attracted much attention for use in renewable energy applications because of their versatile and synergistic optical and electronic properties. Upon absorbing photons, charge separation occurs in the nanocrystals, generating electrons and holes for photocurrent flow or reduction/oxidation (redox) reactions under proper conditions. Incorporating these nanocrystals into conjugated polymers can complement the visible light absorption range of the polymers for photovoltaics applications or allow the polymers to sensitize or immobilize the nanocrystals for photocatalysis. Here, the current developments of conjugated polymer/nanocrystal nanocomposites for bulk heterojunction-type photovoltaics incorporating Cd- and Pb-based nanocrystals or quantum dots are reviewed. The effects of manipulating the organic ligands and the concentration of the nanocrystal precursor, critical factors that affect the shape and aggregation of the nanocrystals, are also discussed. In the conclusion, the mechanisms through which conjugated polymers can sensitize semiconductor nanocrystals (TiO2 , ZnO) to ensure efficient charge separation, as well as how they can support immobilized nanocrystals for use in photocatalysis, are addressed.
