Abstract
The construction of secondary building units (SBUs) in versatile metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represents a promising method for developing multi-functional materials, especially for improving their sensitizing ability. Herein, we developed a dual small molecules auxiliary strategy to construct a high-nuclear transition-metal-based UiO-architecture Co16-MOF-BDC with visible-light-absorbing capacity. Remarkably, the N3 - molecule in hexadecameric cobalt azide SBU offers novel modification sites to precise bonding of strong visible-light-absorbing chromophores via click reaction. The resulting Bodipy@Co16-MOF-BDC exhibits extremely high performance for oxidative coupling benzylamine (~100 % yield) via both energy and electron transfer processes, which is much superior to that of Co16-MOF-BDC (31.5 %) and Carboxyl @Co16-MOF-BDC (37.5 %). Systematic investigations reveal that the advantages of Bodipy@Co16-MOF-BDC in dual light-absorbing channels, robust bonding between Bodipy/Co16 clusters and efficient electron-hole separation can greatly boost photosynthesis. This work provides an ideal molecular platform for synergy between photosensitizing MOFs and chromophores by constructing high-nuclear transition-metal-based SBUs with surface-modifiable small molecules.

Abstract
A cationic surfactant containing a spiropyran unit is prepared exhibiting a dual‐responsive adjustability of its surface‐active characteristics. The switching mechanism of the system relies on the reversible conversion of the non‐ionic spiropyran (SP) to a zwitterionic merocyanine (MC) and can be controlled by adjusting the pH value and via light, resulting in a pH‐dependent photoactivity: While the compound possesses a pronounced difference in surface activity between both forms under acidic conditions, this behavior is suppressed at a neutral pH level. The underlying switching processes are investigated in detail, and a thermodynamic explanation based on a combination of theoretical and experimental results is provided. This complex stimuli‐responsive behavior enables remote‐control of colloidal systems. To demonstrate its applicability, the surfactant is utilized for the pH‐dependent manipulation of oil‐in‐water emulsions.

Abstract
The development of a responsive fluorescent probe for the detection of a particular biomolecule in a specific site at the desired moment is important in the fields of bioanalysis and imaging, molecular biology and biomedical research. In this work, we report the development of a remote-light activatable nanoprobe for the fluorescence detection of sulphite in pure aqueous solution and its imaging applications in living cells. The nanoprobe, Poly-Cm-SP, is fabricated simply by wrapping photochromic molecules (Cm-SP) into a polymer nanoparticle. Upon alternate UV/Vis light irradiation for several seconds, the Poly-Cm-SP nanoprobe exhibits red/blue fluorescence switch due to the inactive/active FRET processes from coumarins to the SP/MR isomers of the photochromic molecule. In the presence of sulphite, the specific reaction of sulphite with the electron deficit "CC" bond of the MR isomer occurs, resulting in an inefficient FRET process and thus exhibiting a constant "ON" blue channel fluorescence signal. After UV-light irradiation, the formation of activated Poly-Cm-MRin situ thus enables the detection of sulphite through recording the ratiometric changes of fluorescence signals at both blue and red channels. The Poly-Cm-SP nanoprobe possesses excellent biocompatibility and lysosome distribution capability, allowing it to be used for photochromic imaging and sulphite detection in the lysosomes of living macrophage cells. This work thus offers a new remote-light activatable nanoprobe for the detection and imaging of sulphite in biological systems.

Abstract
A visible-light-promoted aerobic hydroxyazidation of indole derivatives with TMSN3 is described. The reaction proceeded under photocatalyst-free conditions to furnish trans-2-azidoindolin-3-ols with high regioselectivity and stereoselectivity. The protocol is operationally simple, and the starting materials (e.g., 1-(pyrimidin-2-yl) indoles, azidotrimethylsilane, and air) are readily available. The proposed mechanism in which substrates act as photocatalysts upon excitation using blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) was supported by experimental studies.

Abstract
The application of molecular switches for the fabrication of multistimuli-responsive chromic materials and devices still remains a challenge because of the restrictions imposed by the supporting solid matrices where these compounds must be incorporated: they often critically affect the chromic response as well as limit the type and nature of external stimuli that can be applied. In this work, we propose the use of ionogels to overcome these constraints, as they provide a soft, fluidic, transparent, thermally stable, and ionic-conductive environment where molecular switches preserve their solution-like properties and can be exposed to a number of different stimuli. By exploiting this strategy, we herein pioneer the preparation of nitrospiropyran-based materials using a single solid platform that exhibit optimal photo-, halo-, thermo-, and electrochromic switching behaviors.

Abstract
A new probe for precise and accurate bioimaging contributes significantly to advancing biomedical research for early disease diagnosis and treatment monitoring. Through wrapping a photochromic molecule (SP-Np-B) within a polymer nanoparticle, a new light-controlled multicolour fluorescence nanoprobe (Poly-SP-Np-B) is developed for precise fluorescence subcellular bioimaging. Poly-SP-Np-B shows an "OFF-ON" red-emitting fluorescence response upon alternate UV/Vis light irradiation. After activation by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a green-emitting Poly-SP-Np nanoparticle is generated, thus allowing light-controlled fluorescence response simultaneously, i.e., green and yellow switch upon alternate UV/Vis light irradiation for 10 and 20 s, respectively. Such a "blinking" fluorescence signal change is not possible by only using a photochromic molecule probe (SP-Np-B) with alternate UV/vis light irradiation for over 5 min. Poly-SP-Np-B has large isomerization kinetic constants (kSP-MR = 0.4543 s-1 and kMR-SP = 0.0809 s-1), excellent biocompatibility and lysosome distribution capability, enabling multicolour fluorescence imaging in live cells. With exo-/endogenous H2O2 activation in lysosomes, light-controlled "double-check" fluorescence imaging at the subcellular level is successfully achieved. More specifically, the change in fluorescence imaging is reversible in green, red and yellow channels in live cells upon excitation under alternate UV and visible light. This work thus provides a new strategy to develop switchable photochromic probes for precise fluorescence bioassay and bioimaging.

Abstract
Small changes in the pH gradient play a critical role in numerous biological and chemical pathways. Systems capable of monitoring and regulating these changes with high sensitivity and minimum photo-fatigue are in demand. Herein, we propose a visible light-triggered molecular system that allows for reversible regulation of acidity and fluorescence. This robust bi-functional system opens a new horizon towards novel studies that rely on small changes in acid-mediated controlled processes with high sensitivity. The two photosensitive compounds employed, a metastable-state photoacid (mPAH) and a boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivative, allow for consistent modulation of both fluorescence (based on the working principle of the inner filter effect) and pH (around a magnitude) over multiple cycles.

Abstract
Traditional optoelectronic devices without stretchable performance could be limited for substrates with irregular shape. Therefore, it is urgent to explore a new generation of flexible, stretchable, and low-cost intelligent vehicles as visual display and storage devices, such as hydrogels. In the investigation, a novel photochromic hydrogel was developed by introducing the negatively charged ammonium molybdate as a photochromic unit into polyacrylamide via ionic and covalent cross-linking. The hydrogel exhibited excellent properties of low cost, easy preparation, stretchable deformation, fatigue resistance, high transparency, and second-order response to external signals. Moreover, the photochromic and fading process of hydrogels could be precisely controlled and repeated under the irradiation of UV light and exposure of oxygen at different time and temperature. The photochromic hydrogel could be considered applied for artificial intelligence system, wearable healthcare device, and flexible memory device. Therefore, the strategy for designing a soft photochromic material would open a new direction to manufacture flexible and stretchable devices.

Abstract
Recent developments in super-resolution microscopy have significantly expanded the requirements for switchable dyes, leading to demand for specially designed molecular switches. We report the synthesis and characterization of a spironaphthoxazine photochromic switch (a derivative of palatinate purple) displaying high photoconversion (85-95%) under readily accessible 405 nm light, broad absorption in the visible, and excellent fatigue resistance. The indole substituent on this spironaphthoxazine is twisted out of conjugation with the naphthalene unit, yet it is crucial for activation with visible light. The open colored merocyanine form of the spironaphthoxazine reverts to the closed form with a lifetime of 4.7 s in dichloromethane at 20 °C; this thermal reversion is even faster in more polar solvents. The photochemical quantum yields for ring-opening and ring-closing are approximately 8% and 1%, respectively, in dichloromethane. The ring-opening and ring-closing reactions have been characterized by time-resolved infrared and transient absorption spectroscopies. Ring opening occurs rapidly (τ = 2.1 ns) and efficiently (∼90%) from the singlet excited state to form an intermediate (assigned as a cisoid merocyanine), which returns to the closed ground state (τ = 4.5 ns) in competition with relaxation to the transoid open form (τ = 40 ns). Photochemical ring closing is a faster and simpler process: the excited state proceeds to the closed spirooxazine with a time constant of 0.28 ns. This photochromic switch can be used in conjunction with commercial fluorescent dyes to create a small-molecule switchable fluorescent dyad that shows high contrast and good fatigue resistance in living cells. These properties make the dyads suitable for application in RESOLFT microscopy.

Abstract
The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior of metal nanoclusters has attracted much attention owing to their extensive application prospects in bio-imaging and chemical sensors. However, the intrinsic mechanism of metal nanoclusters' aggregation-induced emission is still not very clear. Herein, Cu nanoclusters S1 and Ag(i)-doped Cu/Ag nanoclusters S2 and S3 coated with d-penicillamine are designed and synthesized by a self-assembly strategy. S1-S3 show strong luminescence properties with luminescence quantum yields as high as 11.4%-14.2%. Moreover, their luminescence peak position shows an obvious hypsochromic shift from 615 (S1) to 570 nm (S3). With the introduction of Ag(i) ions, the assembly morphology also shows clear changes from the irregular assembly structure (S1) to large spherical particles with the average size of 0.18 μm for S2 and 0.47 μm for S3. A detailed investigation of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images, X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, ESI-TOF-mass spectra, UV-vis absorption spectra, photoluminescence spectra and luminescence lifetimes of Cu/Ag nanoclusters S2 and S3 indicates that Cu/Ag nanoclusters are actually a Cu/Ag alloy nanocluster superstructure and the microscopic arrangement of S2 and S3 is more compact and ordered relative to S1. The more compact and ordered Cu/Ag alloy nanocluster superstructure enhances the metal-metal interaction of inter-nanoclusters and intra-nanoclusters and facilitates the radiative transition of ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) and/or ligand-to-metal-metal charge transfer (LMMCT), which results in the aggregation-induced emission phenomenon. In addition, an enhanced metal-metal interaction increases the average metal-metal distance of the Cu/Ag nanocluster superstructure, leading to a hypsochromic shift of emission spectra. Furthermore, the Cu/Ag alloy nanoclusters show good stability and reversibility on pH cycling between pH = 3 and 7 and temperature cycling between 5 °C and 48 °C. The Cu/Ag alloy nanoclusters can be used as probes for Ag(i) ion and halide anion detection in real water samples by the ratiometric PL method (I570/I615).

Abstract
Studies on the following were reviewed: (1) the structure of spiropyrans and spirooxazines (two kinds of spiro compounds) under external stimuli and (2) the construction and applications of composite systems based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) with fluorescent materials. When treated with different stimuli (light, acids and bases, solvents, metal ions, temperature, redox potential, and so on), spiropyrans/spirooxazines undergo transformations between the ring-closed form (SP), the ring-opened merocyanine (MC) form, and the protonated ring-opened form (MCH). This is due to the breakage of the spiro C-O bond and the protonation of MC, along with a color change. Various novel, multifunctional materials based on photochromic spiropyrans and spirooxazines have been successfully developed because of the vastly differently physiochemical properties posssed by the SP, MC and MCH forms. Among the three different structural forms, the MC form has been studied most extensively. The MC form not only gives complexes with various inorganic particles, biological molecules, and organic chemicals but also acts as the energy acceptor (of energy from fluorescent molecules) during energy transfer processes that take place under proper conditions. Furthermore, spiropyran and spirooxazine compounds exhibit reversible physicochemical property changes under proper stimuli; this provides more advantages compared with other photochromic compounds. Additionally, the molecular structures of spiropyrans and spirooxazines can be easily modified and extended, so better compounds can be obtained to expand the scope of already known applications. Described in detail are: (1) the structural properties of spiropyrans and spirooxazines and related photochromic mechanisms; (2) composite systems based on spiropyrans and spirooxazines, and (3) fluorescent materials which have potential applications in sensing, probing, and a variety of optical elements.

Abstract
One strong fluorescent Bodipy-containing derivative was synthesized and characterized using 1 H NMR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. Its electrochemical and photophysical properties were investigated. In addition, the Bodipy derivative could be used as an on-off fluorescent probe for the detection of Fe3+ ions based on the inner filter effect because the absorption band of the Fe3+ ion overlaps the excitation band of Bodipy very well upon irradiation with UV light. Furthermore, the Bodipy-based sensor has obvious advantages including simplicity, rapid response, high selectivity, sensitivity and a detection limit of 1.2 μmol/L, and has been demonstrated in real water samples including tap water, mineral water and water from Lake Tai. Moreover, the fluorescent probe could also be used as a probe for the determination of Fe3+ in cellular and bacterial imaging. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract
To study the effects of an extended bis-azo conjugated bridge with two different photochemical functions on a molecule in photochromic responses, a novel asymmetrical bifunctional bis-azo spiropyran photochromic dye was designed and synthesized. The obtained photoresponses were compared with symmetrical bifunctional bis-azo spiropyran analogues, and relative mono-azo and simple spiropyrans. Colourimetric behaviour, luminescence, and switching kinetics of all the dyes were studied. The largest molar absorption coefficient in merocyanine form, quickest response to light, and highest fluorescence quantum yield of the spiropyran form with a superior ratio of emission intensities of spiropyran to merocyanine form were achieved for the asymmetric bis-azospiropyran. Solvatochromic effect was studied to observe the solvent effects on non-irradiation colouration of the photochromic dyes. Furthermore, The molecular energy levels for optimized geometries of the synthesized bis-azospiropyrans and their probable photochemical products were obtained at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory.

Abstract
A novel multifunctional mechanically interlocked switchable [2]rotaxane R4 containing two molecular stations and rotaxane arms terminated with boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) fluorophores and its derivatives were synthesized for the first time by CuAAC click reaction. The shuttling motion of macrocycle between the dibenzylammonium and triazolium recognition sites and the distance dependent photoinduced electron transfer process of R4 is demonstrated by utilizing external chemical stimuli (acid/base). Interestingly, the reversible self-assembly process of R4 was recognized by the acid-base molecular switch strategy. Notably, two symmetrical triazolium groups acted as molecular stations, H2PO4(-) receptors, and H-bonded donors. Both [2]rotaxane R4 and thread R2 demonstrated excellent optical responses and high selectivity toward H2PO4(-) ion. The specific motion and guest-host interactions of mechanically interlocked machines (MIMs) were also further explored by quantum mechanical calculations. The thread R2 also demonstrated to enable the detection of H2PO4(-) in RAW 264.7 cells successfully.

Abstract
Dithienylethene (DTE)-2,6-diiodoBodipy triads were prepared with the aim to photoswitch the triplet excited state of the 2,6-diiodoBodipy moiety. Bodipy was selected due to its low T1 state energy level to avoid sensitized photocyclization of DTE, which is very often encountered in DTE photoswitches, so that the photochemistry of DTE and the organic chromophore can be addressed independently. This is the first time that DTE was covalently connected with an organic triplet photosensitizer. For the triad with DTE-o structure, selective photoexcitation into the diiodoBodipy part did not initiate photocyclization of DTE-o. Upon photoirradiation at 254 nm, thus the DTE-o → DTE-c transformation, the intersystem crossing (ISC) of 2,6-diiodoBodipy moiety was competed by the photoactivated resonance energy transfer (RET), with Bodipy as the intramolecular energy donor and DTE-c as energy acceptor. The fluorescence of Bodipy was quenched and the triplet state lifetime of Bodipy was reduced from 105.1 to 40.9 μs. The photoreversion is O2-independent, but can be greatly accelerated upon selective photoexcitation into the diiodoBodipy absorption band (at 535 nm). We concluded that ISC is not outcompeted by RET. The photoswitching of the triplet state was transduced to the singlet oxygen photosensitizing, as well as triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion.

Abstract
![]()
Luminescent materials are important
for imaging and sensing. Aromatic
difluoroboron β-diketonate complexes (BF2bdks) are
classic fluorescent molecules that have been explored as photochemical
reagents, two-photon dyes, and oxygen sensors. A series of BF2bdks with naphthyl and phenyl groups was synthesized, and
photophysical properties were investigated in both methylene chloride
and poly(lactic acid) (PLA). Polymer molecular weight and dye attachment
site along with bromide heavy atom placement were varied to tune optical
properties of dye–PLA materials. Systems without heavy atoms
have long phosphorescence lifetimes, which is useful for lifetime-based
oxygen sensing. Bromine substitution on the naphthyl ring resulted
in intense, clearly distinguishable fluorescence and phosphorescence
peaks important for ratiometric oxygen sensing and imaging.

Abstract
Here, we report for the first time on photoswitchable nanospheres containing spiropyran (Sp) for reversible release and uptake of metal ions. K(+) is used as a model ion to demonstrate the chemical principle of this approach. Valinomycin is incorporated in the nanospheres to stabilize K(+). Upon UV illumination, Sp transforms to the more basic ring-opened merocyanine form, which takes up H(+) from the surrounding aqueous solution and expels K(+) from the nanospheres. The process can be reversed by irradiation with visible light to reduce the surrounding K(+) concentration.
