Hybrid nanocomposites with tunable alignment of the magnetic nanorod filler

Goethite Nanorods: Synthesis and Investigation of the Size Effect on Their Orientation within a Magnetic Field by SAXS

Goethite is a naturally anisotropic, antiferromagnetic iron oxide. Following its atomic structure, crystals grow into a fine needle shape that has interesting properties in a magnetic field. The needles align parallel to weak magnetic fields and perpendicular when subjected to high fields. We synthesized goethite nanorods with lengths between 200 nm and 650 nm in a two-step process. In a first step we synthesized precursor particles made of akaganeite (β-FeOOH) rods from iron(III)chloride. The precursors were then treated in a hydrothermal reactor under alkaline conditions with NaOH and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to form goethite needles. The aspect ratio was tunable between 8 and 15, based on the conditions during hydrothermal treatment. The orientation of these particles in a magnetic field was investigated by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). We observed that the field strength required to trigger a reorientation is dependent on the length and aspect ratio of the particles and could be shifted from 85 mT for the small particles to about 147 mT for the large particles. These particles could provide highly interesting magnetic properties to nanocomposites, that could then be used for sensing applications or membranes.

Analyzing spinodal decomposition of an anisotropic fluid mixture

Spinodal decomposition leads to spontaneous fluctuations of the local concentration. In the early stage, the resulting pattern provides explicit information about the material properties of the mixture. In the case of two isotropic fluids, the static structure factor shows the characteristic ring shape. If one component is a liquid crystal, the pattern is typically anisotropic and the structure factor is more complex. Using numerical methods, we investigate how structure factors can be used to extract information about material properties like the diffusion constant or the isotropic and the anisotropic contributions to the interfacial tension. The method is based on momenta taken from structure factors in the early stage of the spinodal demixing. We perform phase field calculations for an isotropic and an anisotropic spinodal decomposition. A comparison of the extracted results with analytic values is made. The calculations show that linear modes dominate in the beginning of the growth process, while non-linear modes grow monotonously in the region of the k-space for which damping is predicted by the linearized theory. As long as non-linear modes are small enough, linearized theory can be applied to extract material properties from the structure factor.

One-dimensional fossil-like γ-Fe2O3@carbon nanostructure: preparation, structural characterization and application as adsorbent for fast and selective recovery of gold ions from aqueous solution

One-dimensional (1D) magnetic nanostructures with high thermal stability have important industrial applications, but their fabrication remains a big challenge. Herein we demonstrate a scalable approach for the preparation of stable 1D γ-Fe2O3@carbon, which is also applicable for other metal oxide-core and carbon-shell nanostructures, such as 1D TiO2@carbon. One-dimensional ferric oxyhydroxide (α-FeO(OH)) was initially prepared by a hydrothermal method, followed by carbon coating through hydrothermal treatment of the resulting metal oxide in glucose solution. After calcination in N2 gas at 500 °C and subsequent exposure to air, the initial carbon-coated 1D α-Fe2O3 was converted to 1D γ-Fe2O3@carbon, which was very stable without any observed changes even after 1.5 years of storage under ambient conditions. The materials were then used as adsorbents and found to be highly selective towards Au (III) adsorption, of which the maximum adsorption capacity is about 600 mg Au/g sorbent (1132 mg Au/g carbon). The spent sorbent containing Au after adsorption can be readily collected by applying a magnetic field due to the presence of the magnetic core, and the adsorbed Au particles are subsequently recovered after the combustion and dissolution of the sorbent. This work demonstrates not only a facile approach to the fabrication of robust 1D magnetic materials with a stable carbon shell, but also a possible cyanide-free process for the fast and selective recovery of gold from electronic waste and industrial water.

Programmable macroscopic supramolecular assembly through combined molecular recognition and magnetic field-assisted localization

Macroscopic supramolecular assembly is a promising bottom-up method to construct ordered three-dimensional structures in a programmable way because of its flexible tailoring features. To handle the challenges of precisely aligning the building blocks, we proposed the combination of magnetic field-assisted localization for the locomotion of building blocks and host/guest supramolecular recognition for their immobilization. By applying this strategy, we have realized the stepwise construction of microscale glass fibers into an ordered complex pattern. Furthermore, through the introduction of a competitive guest molecule to disassemble the assembled structure, we demonstrated that the interaction between the fibers and the substrate was supramolecular rather than nonselective stickiness. Multivalent theory was used to interpret the mechanism for the interaction process.
