Influence of surface topography attributes on settlement and adhesion of natural and synthetic species

Surface topographies of various sizes, shapes, and spatial organization abound in nature. They endow properties such as super-hydrophobicity, reversible adhesion, anti-fouling, self-cleaning, anti-glare, and anti-bacterial, just to mention a few. Researchers have long attempted to replicate these structures to create artificial surfaces with the functionalities found in nature. In this review, we decompose the attributes of surface topographies into their constituents, namely feature dimensions, geometry, and stiffness, and examine how they contribute (individually or collectively) to settlement and adhesion of natural organisms and synthetic particles on the surface. The size of features that comprise the topography affects the contact area between the particle and surface as well as its adhesion and contributes to the observed adsorptive properties of the surface. The geometry of surface perturbations can also affect the contact area and gives rise to anisotropic particle settlement. Surface topography also affects the local stiffness of the surface and governs the adhesion strength on the surface. Overall, systematically studying attributes of surface topography and elucidating how each of them affects adhesion and settlement of particles will facilitate the design of topographically-corrugated surfaces with desired adsorption characteristics.

Kirigami-Inspired Structures for Smart Adhesion

Spatially controlled layouts of elasticity can provide enhanced adhesion over homogeneous systems. Emerging techniques in kirigami, where designed cuts in materials impart highly tunable stiffness and geometry, offer an intriguing approach to create well-defined layouts of prescribed elastic regions. Here, we show that kirigami-inspired structures at interfaces provide a new mechanism to spatially control and enhance adhesion strength while providing directional characteristics for smart interfaces. We use kirigami-inspired cuts to define stiff and compliant regions, where above a critical, material-defined length scale, bending rigidity and contact width can be tuned to enhance adhesive force capacity by a factor of ∼100 across a spatially patterned adhesive sheet. The directional nature of these designs also imparts anisotropic responses, where peeling in different directions results in anisotropic adhesion ratios of ∼10. Experimental results are well-supported by theoretical predictions in which the bending rigidity and contact width of kirigami-inspired structures and interconnects control the adhesive capacity. These new interfacial structures and design criteria provide diverse routes for advanced adhesive functionality, including spatially controlled systems, wearable kirigami-inspired electronics, and anisotropic kirigami-inspired bandages that enable strong adhesive capacity while maintaining easy release.

Toughness amplification in copper/epoxy joints through pulsed laser micro-machined interface heterogeneities

This work addresses the mechanics of debonding along copper/epoxy joints featuring patterned interfaces. Engineered surface heterogeneities with enhanced adhesion properties are generated through pulsed laser irradiation. Peel tests are carried out to ascertain the effect of patterns shape and area fraction on the mechanical response. Experimental results are evaluated with the support of three-dimensional finite element simulations based on the use of cohesive surfaces. Results discussion is largely framed in terms of effective peel force and energy absorbed to sever the samples. It is shown that surface heterogeneities act as sites of potential crack pinning able to trigger crack initiation, propagation and arrest. Surface patterns ultimately enable a remarkable increase in the effective peel force and dissipated energy with respect to baseline homogeneous sanded interface.

A Review of the State of Dry Adhesives: Biomimetic Structures and the Alternative Designs They Inspire

Robust and inexpensive dry adhesives would have a multitude of potential applications, but replicating the impressive adhesive organs of many small animals has proved challenging. A substantial body of work has been produced in recent years which has illuminated the many mechanical processes influencing a dry adhesive interface. The especially potent footpads of the tokay gecko have inspired researchers to develop and examine an impressive and diverse collection of artificial fibrillar dry adhesives, though study of tree frogs and insects demonstrate that successful adhesive designs come in many forms. This review discusses the current theoretical understanding of dry adhesive mechanics, including the observations from biological systems and the lessons learned by recent attempts to mimic them. Attention is drawn in particular to the growing contingent of work exploring ideas which are complimentary to or an alternative for fibrillar designs. The fundamentals of compliance control form a basis for dry adhesives made of composite and “smart,” stimuli-responsive materials including shape memory polymers. An overview of fabrication and test techniques, with a sampling of performance results, is provided.

Nanometer smooth, macroscopic spherical cellulose probes for contact adhesion measurements

Cellulose spheres were prepared by dissolving cellulose fibers and subsequently solidifying the solution in a nonsolvent. Three different solution concentrations were tested and several nonsolvents were evaluated for their effect on the formation of spheres. Conditions were highlighted to create cellulose spheres with a diameter of ∼1 mm and a root-mean-square surface roughness of ∼1 nm. These solid spheres were shown to be easily chemically modified without changing the mechanical properties significantly. Contact adhesion measurements were then implemented with these spheres against a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) elastomer in order to quantify the adhesion. Using Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) theory, we quantified the adhesion for unmodified cellulose and hydrophobic cellulose spheres. We highlight the ability of these spheres to report more accurate adhesion information, compared to spin-coated thin films. The application of these new cellulose probes also opens up new possibilities for direct, accurate measurement of adhesion between cellulose and other materials instead of using uncertain surface energy determinations to calculate the theoretical work of adhesion between cellulose and different solid materials.
