Abstract
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are a feasible alternative to traditional silicon-based solar cells because of their low cost, eco-friendliness, flexibility, and acceptable device efficiency. In recent years, solid-state DSSCs (ss-DSSCs) have garnered much interest as they can overcome the leakage and evaporation issues of liquid electrolyte systems. However, the poor morphology of solid electrolytes and their interface with photoanodes can minimize the device performance. The photosensitizer/dye is a critical component of ss-DSSCs and plays a vital role in the device's overall performance. In this review, we summarize recent developments and performance of photosensitizers, including mono- and co-sensitization of ruthenium, porphyrin, and metal-free organic dyes under 1 sun and ambient/artificial light conditions. We also discuss the various requirements that efficient photosensitizers should satisfy and provide an overview of their historical development over the years.

Abstract
"The Hagfeldt donor" is a bulky triarylamine building block with four alkyl chains in a 3-dimensional arrangement that is used with organic dyes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) in over 140 publications. Many of the highest performing DSC devices in literature make use of this group due to exceptional TiO2 surface protection properties, which slows recombination of electrons in TiO2 with the electrolyte. Importantly, record-setting cobalt and copper redox shuttle-based DSCs require exceptional surface protection to slow a facile recombination of electrons to these positively charged redox shuttles. Several syntheses have emerged for the Hagfeldt donor due to the need for iterative aryl-halide cross- coupling reactions complicating a straightforward route. Six synthetic strategies found in literature are described along with the challenges of each route. A recent method that has been put forward in the literature as a scalable, regioisomerically pure route is highlighted.

Abstract
The feasibility of the hybrid nanocomposites of the graphene quantum dot (GQD) and the phenoxazine-based dyes as the efficient sensitizer of the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is investigated. Based on the first principles density functional theory (DFT), the geometrical structures of the separate GQDs, the phenoxazine-based dyes, and their hybridized nanocomposites are fully optimized. The energy stabilities of the obtained structures are confirmed by harmonic frequency analysis. The optical absorptions of the optimized structures are calculated with the time-dependent DFT (TDDFT). The feasibility of the nanocomposites as the sensitizer of DSSC is examined by the charge spatial separation, the molecular orbital energy levels of the nanocomposites and the I-/I3- electrolyte, and the conduction band minimum of TiO2 electrode. The results demonstrate that three of the eight considered nanocomposites satisfy the requirement of DSSC. Among them, GQD4-POXB with large LHE, high Voc, and enhancement absorption becomes the most promising candidate as a feasible sensitizer. These findings are helpful for the design of the sensitizer of DSSC or the solar energy harvesting materials with the nanocomposites.

Abstract
We report four NIR photosensitizers employing a low-recombination donor and a thieno[3,4-b]thiophene (3,4-TT) π bridge for use in dye-sensitized solar cells. The inclusion of electron rich π spacers red-shifts the dye absorbance with solution absorption onsets reaching 700 nm. Dyes were found to have suitable energy levels for rapid electron transfers using cyclic voltammetry and UV/Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy. Computationally optimized ground-state geometries show an increased torsional angle between π spacer and π bridge brought about by an added alkyl chain. This results in a widened optical band gap and increased oxidation potentials owing to a weakening of the electron-accepting ability of 3,4-TT for solution-state measurements. Interestingly in terms of device parameters, the alkylated π spacer had a nearly identical incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) curve onset when compared to a non-alkylated analogue, suggesting more similar dye geometries on the surface of TiO2 . Elevated short-circuit current density (JSC ) values and comparable open-circuit voltage (VOC ) values were observed in the alkylated-π-spacer-dye-based devices with power conversion efficiencies up to 6.8 % observed with IPCE onsets exceeding 800 nm.

Abstract
Benzimidazole-branched bi-anchoring organic dyes that contained triphenylamine/phenothiazine donors, 2-cyanoacrylic acid acceptors, and various π linkers were synthesized and examined as sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells. The structure-activity relationships in these dyes were systematically investigated by using absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and density functional theory calculations. The wavelength of the absorption peak was more-heavily influenced by the nature of the π linker than by the nature of the donor. For a given donor, the absorption maximum (λmax ) was red-shifted on changing the π linker from phenyl to 2,2'-bithiophene, whilst the dyes that contained triphenylamine units displayed higher molar extinction coefficients (ϵ) than their analogous phenothiazine-based triphenylamine dyes, which led to good light-harvesting properties in the triphenylamine-based dyes. Electrochemical data for the dyes indicated that the triphenylamine-based dyes possessed relatively low-lying HOMOs, which could be beneficial for suppressing back electron transfer from the conduction band of TiO2 to the oxidized dyes, owing to facile regeneration of the oxidized dye by the electrolyte. The best performance in the DSSCs was observed for a dye that possessed a triphenylamine donor and 2,2'-bithiophene π linkers. Electron impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies revealed that the use of triphenylamine as the donor and phenyl or 2,2'-bithiophene as the π linkers was beneficial for disrupting the dark current and charge-recombination kinetics, which led to a long electron lifetime of the injected electrons in the conduction band of TiO2 .

Abstract
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have shown significant potential for indoor and building-integrated photovoltaic applications. Herein we present three new D-A-π-A organic sensitizers, XY1, XY2, and XY3, that exhibit high molar extinction coefficients and a broad absorption range. Molecular modifications of these dyes, featuring a benzothiadiazole (BTZ) auxiliary acceptor, were achieved by introducing a thiophene heterocycle as well as by shifting the position of BTZ on the conjugated bridge. The ensuing high molar absorption coefficients enabled the fabrication of highly efficient thin-film solid-state DSSCs with only 1.3 μm mesoporous TiO2 layer. XY2 with a molar extinction coefficient of 6.66 × 10(4) M(-1) cm(-1) at 578 nm led to the best photovoltaic performance of 7.51%.

Abstract
Fluorescent sensors are attractive and versatile tools for both chemical sensing and biological imaging. Herein, a novel pyrene derivative fluorophore, Py-Cy, possessing the monomer/excimer conversion feature, was synthesized; and the design rationale for this fluorophore is combination of extending conjugation length and incorporating donor-π-acceptor structure. The positively charged Py-Cy shows quite good water solubility and exhibits absorption in the visible-light range, and its monomer and excimer emit red light and near-infrared light respectively, which is extremely beneficial for biosensing or bioimaging. To explore the potential utilization of this new fluorophore, we choose hypochlorite as a model analyte, which can break the double bond in the molecular structure, thereby generating the water-insoluble pyrenecarboxaldehyde; this process correspondingly leads to fluorescence changes and thus affords the ratiometric fluorescent detection of hypochlorite in real samples and cell imaging. The approach offers new insights for designing other fluorophores which emit red or near-infrared light and for devising technically simple ratiometric fluorescent sensors.

Influence of the Terminal Electron Donor in D-D-π-A Organic Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: Dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole versus Bis(amine). ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES 2015; 7:22436-22447. Abstract
With respect to the electron-withdrawing acceptors of D-A-π-A organic dyes, reports on the second electron-donating donors for D-D-π-A organic dyes are very limited. Both of the dyes have attracted significant attention in the field of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). In this work, four new D-D-π-A organic dyes with dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole (DTP) or bis(amine) donor have been designed and synthesized for a investigation of the influence of the terminal electron donor in D-D-π-A organic dye-sensitized solar cells. It is found that DTP is a promising building block as the terminal electron donor when introduced in the dithiophenepyrrole direction, but not just a good bridge, which exhibits several characteristics: (i) efficiently increasing the maximum molar absorption coefficient and extending the absorption bands; (ii) showing stronger charge transfer interaction as compared with the pyrrole direction; (iii) beneficial to photocurrent generation of DSCs employing cobalt electrolytes. DSCs based on M45 with the Co-phen electrolyte exhibit good light-to-electric energy conversion efficiencies as high as 9.02%, with a short circuit current density (JSC) of 15.3 mA cm(-2), open circuit voltage (VOC) of 867 mV and fill factor (FF) of 0.68 under AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW cm(-2)). The results demonstrate that N,S-heterocycles such as DTP unit could be promising candidates for application in highly efficient DSCs employing cobalt electrolyte.
