Advanced Thermoelectric Textiles for Power Generation: Principles, Design, and Manufacturing

Self-powered wearable thermoelectric (TE) devices significantly reduce the inconvenience caused to users, especially in daily use of portable devices and monitoring personal health. The textile-based TE devices (TETs) exhibit the excellent flexibility, deformability, and light weight, which fulfill demands of long-term wearing for the human body. In comparison to traditional TE devices with their longstanding research history, TETs are still in an initial stage of growth. In recent years, TETs to provide electricity for low-power wearable electronics have attracted increasing attention. This review summarizes the recent progress of TETs from the points of selecting TE materials, scalable fabrication methods of TE fibers/yarns and TETs, structure design of TETs and reported high-performance TETs. The key points to develop TETs with outstanding TE properties and mechanical performance and better than available optimization strategies are discussed. Furthermore, remaining challenges and perspectives of TETs are also proposed to suggest practical applications for heat harvesting from human body.

Engineering of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks based on magnetic three-dimensional graphene as effective and reusable adsorbent to enhance the adsorption and removal of caffeine from tea samples

As more and more adverse health effects of caffeine are being discovered, decaffeinated drinks are receiving increasing attention. In this work, a magnetic imidazole zeolite backbone compounded with three-dimensional graphene was successfully synthesized as a solid adsorbent using a layer-by-layer self-assembly technique, which can rapidly and effectively adsorb caffeine from tea. Meanwhile, the structure and properties of caffeine in tea were investigated by various physicochemical characterization tools. The analytical data showed that Fe3O4@3DGA@ZIF-8 had a specific surface area of 162.9754 m2/g and an adsorption capacity of up to 19.57 mg/g with a maximum adsorption rate of 96.55%, which could be maintained with good adsorption repeated utilization three times. The adsorption isotherm and the adsorption kinetic better fit with the Langmuir model and the preudo-second order kinetic model, respectively. Therefore, Fe3O4@3DGA@ZIF-8 is a good magnetic adsorbent for the separation and the effective removal of caffeine from tea sample.

Highly Efficient Flame-Retardant and Enhanced PVA-Based Composite Aerogels through Interpenetrating Cross-Linking Networks

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (P)/alginate (A)/MMT (M) (PAM) composite aerogels was modified through interpenetrating cross-linking of methyltriethoxysilane (Ms) or γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (K) and calcium ion (Ca²⁺) as a cross-linking agent, respectively. The compressive moduli of the cross-linked PAM/MsCa and PAM/KCa aerogels greatly increased to 17.4 and 22.1 MPa, approximately 10.5- and 8.2-fold of that of PAM aerogel, respectively. The limited oxygen index (LOI) values for PAM/MsCa and PAM/KCa composite aerogels increased from 27.0% of PAM aerogel to 40.5% and 56.8%. Compared with non-cross-linked PAM aerogel, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) of PAM/MsCa and PAM/KCa composite aerogels dramatically decreased by 34% and 74%, respectively, whereas the PAM/KCa aerogel presented better flame retardancy and lower smoke toxicity than the PAM/MsCa aerogel because of the release of more inert gases and the barrier action of more compact char layer during the combustion. The highly efficient flame-retardant PAM-based composite aerogels with excellent mechanical properties are promising as a sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-based foams.

3D Graphene Materials: From Understanding to Design and Synthesis Control

Carbon materials, with their diverse allotropes, have played significant roles in our daily life and the development of material science. Following 0D C₆₀ and 1D carbon nanotube, 2D graphene materials, with their distinctively fascinating properties, have been receiving tremendous attention since 2004. To fulfill the efficient utilization of 2D graphene sheets in applications such as energy storage and conversion, electrochemical catalysis, and environmental remediation, 3D structures constructed by graphene sheets have been attempted over the past decade, giving birth to a new generation of graphene materials called 3D graphene materials. This review starts with the definition, classifications, brief history, and basic synthesis chemistries of 3D graphene materials. Then a critical discussion on the design considerations of 3D graphene materials for diverse applications is provided. Subsequently, after emphasizing the importance of normalized property characterization for the 3D structures, approaches for 3D graphene material synthesis from three major types of carbon sources (GO, hydrocarbons and inorganic carbon compounds) based on GO chemistry, hydrocarbon chemistry, and new alkali-metal chemistry, respectively, are comprehensively reviewed with a focus on their synthesis mechanisms, controllable aspects, and scalability. At last, current challenges and future perspectives for the development of 3D graphene materials are addressed.

Highly Flexible and Patternable Multiwalled-Carbon Nanotube/Nitrocellulose Hybrid Conducting Paper Electrodes as Heating Platforms for Effective Ignition of Nanoenergetic Materials

In this study, a highly flexible, patternable multiwalled-carbon nanotube (MWCNT) paper electrode was specially designed and fabricated. The addition of a nitrocellulose (NC) polymer binder at less than the critical amount (≤2 wt %) was found to be effective for maintaining both the flexibility and electrical conductance of the resulting MWCNT paper electrode. The fabricated MWCNT paper electrode was then employed as a heating platform to ignite Al/CuO nanoparticle-based nanoenergetic materials (nEMs). The nEM layer was drop-cast on the surface of the MWCNT paper electrode with specially patterned shapes using a plotter, and its ignition was evaluated by applying various voltages through the MWCNT paper electrode. To increase the adhesion between the nEM layer and MWCNT paper electrode and to decrease the sparking sensitivity of the nEM layer, it was essential to incorporate NC in the nEM matrix. However, the combustion and explosion properties of nEM layers deteriorated with the addition of NC, enabling the estimation of the optimum amount of NC to be incorporated. The fabricated igniter can be employed in various thermal engineering applications, such as in the ignition of explosives and propellants, and in pyrotechnics. To demonstrate this, a compact, flexible, and patternable igniter composed of the NC/nEM layer (NC/nEM = 2:8 wt %) on an MWCNT paper electrode was used to successfully ignite solid propellants for launching a small rocket.

A three-dimensional self-standing Mo2C/nitrogen-doped graphene aerogel: Enhancement hydrogen production from landfill leachate wastewater in MFCs-AEC coupled system

A hydrothermal-annealing method was adopted to form nitrogen-doped graphene aerogel-supported molybdenum carbide (Mo₂C/NGA) materials by using graphene oxide (GO), poly (propylene glycol) bis(2-aminopropyl ether) (D400 for short) and ammonium molybdate as precursors. The annealing temperature and GO/D400 wt ratio played an important role on the materials structure and electrocatalytic activity. When the annealing temperature reached to 800 °C, the Mo₂C was formed as an active component and improved obviously the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. After introducing the appropriate amount of D400, the Mo₂C/NGA material not only had a firm porous monolithic framework, but also presented an increasing HER activity. Further, the Mo₂C/NGA-based microbial fuel cells-ammonia electrolysis cell (MFCs-AEC) coupled system was constructed and operated for higher hydrogen production. The coupled system produced hydrogen of 198 mL g^-1_Mo2C/NGA in simulated ammonia-rich wastewater. As using the actual landfill leachate wastewater as substrate, there was 79.2 mL g^-1_Mo2C/NGA of hydrogen production. All of these were attributed to the porous structure with an interconnected network and the nitrogen-doped structure of the NGA.

Graphene Quantum Dot Reinforced Electrospun Carbon Nanofiber Fabrics with High Surface Area for Ultrahigh Rate Supercapacitors

High surface area, good conductivity, and high mechanical strength are important for carbon nanofiber fabrics (CNFs) as high-performance supercapacitor electrodes. However, it remains a big challenge because of the trade-off between the strong and continuous conductive network and a well-developed porous structure. Herein, we report a simple strategy to integrate these properties into the electrospun CNFs by adding graphene quantum dots (GQDs). The uniformly embedded GQDs play a crucial bifunctional role in constructing an entire reinforcing phase and conductive network. Compared with the pure CNF, the GQD-reinforced activated CNF exhibits a greatly enlarged surface area from 140 to 2032 m² g^-1 as well as a significantly improved conductivity and strength of 5.5 and 2.5 times, respectively. The mechanism of the robust reinforcing effect is deeply investigated. As a freestanding supercapacitor electrode, the fabric performs a high capacitance of 335 F g^-1 at 1 A g^-1 and extremely high capacitance retentions of 77% at 100 A g^-1 and 45% at 500 A g^-1. Importantly, the symmetric device can be charged to 80% capacitance within only 2.2 s, showing great potential for high-power startup supplies.

Experimental study on the thermal decomposition and combustion characteristics of nitrocellulose with different alcohol humectants

Although the thermal behaviors including thermal instability of nitrocellulose (NC) and its mixtures with some humectants have been comprehensively examined previously in the literature, their combustion characteristics have not been systematically studied. To address the issue, the combustion properties of NC with alcohol humectants are investigated by the means of the ISO 5660 cone calorimeter. Two kinds of NC-humectant mixtures with 30wt.% isopropanol and 30wt.% ethanol, respectively, were employed as samples. The tests were conducted under different external radiations, ranging from 0-15kW/m². The experimental results indicate that the external radiation positively influences the peak heat release rate (HRR) intensity and the maximum mass loss rate (MLR), while the total heat release (THR) decreases with the elevated external radiation. Comparatively, the sample with isopropanol exhibits a higher fire risk, characterized by the higher peak HRR, THR and maximum MLR. Auxiliary investigating methods, including Scanning Electron Microscopy and Differential Scanning Calorimeter-Thermal Gravimetric Analysis, were applied to examine the micro structure and thermal behavior of NC-humectant mixtures. The results helped to explain the burning characteristics observed in the cone calorimeter tests.

Combustion-Assisted Photonic Annealing of Printable Graphene Inks via Exothermic Binders

High-throughput and low-temperature processing of high-performance nanomaterial inks is an important technical challenge for large-area, flexible printed electronics. In this report, we demonstrate nitrocellulose as an exothermic binder for photonic annealing of conductive graphene inks, leveraging the rapid decomposition kinetics and built-in energy of nitrocellulose to enable versatile process integration. This strategy results in superlative electrical properties that are comparable to extended thermal annealing at 350 °C, using a pulsed light process that is compatible with thermally sensitive substrates. The resulting porous microstructure and broad liquid-phase patterning compatibility are exploited for printed graphene microsupercapacitors on paper-based substrates.

Functional Three-Dimensional Graphene/Polymer Composites

Integration of graphene with polymers to construct three-dimensional porous graphene/polymer composites (3DGPCs) has attracted considerable attention in the past few years for both fundamental studies and diverse technological applications. With the broad diversity in molecular structures of graphene and polymers via rich chemical routes, a number of 3DGPCs have been developed with unique structural, electrical, and mechanical properties, chemical tenability, and attractive functions, which greatly expands the research horizon of graphene-based composites. In particular, the properties and functions of the 3DGPCs can be readily tuned by precisely controlling the hierarchical porosity in the 3D graphene architecture as well as the intricate synergistic interactions between graphene and polymers. In this paper, we review the recent progress in 3DGPCs, including their synthetic strategies and potential applications in environmental protection, energy storage, sensors, and conducting composites. Lastly, we will conclude with a brief perspective on the challenges and future opportunities.
