Abstract
Photoanisotropic materials, in particular azodyes and azopolymers, have attracted significant research interest in the last decades. This is due to their applications in polarization holography and 4G optics, enabling polarization-selective diffractive optical elements with unique properties, including circular polarization beam-splitters, polarization-selective bifocal lenses, and many others. Numerous methods have been applied to increase the photoinduced birefringence of these materials, and as a result, to obtain polarization holographic elements with a high diffraction efficiency. Recently, a new approach has emerged that has been extensively studied by many research groups, namely doping azobenzene-containing materials with nanoparticles with various compositions, sizes, and morphologies. The resulting nanocomposites have shown significant enhancement in their photoanisotropic response, including increased photoinduced birefringence, leading to a higher diffraction efficiency and a larger surface relief modulation in the case of polarization holographic recordings. This review aims to cover the most important achievements in this new but fast-growing field of research and to present an extensive comparative analysis of the result, reported by many research groups during the last two decades. Different hypotheses to explain the mechanism of photoanisotropy enhancement in these nanocomposites are also discussed. Finally, we present our vision for the future development of this scientific field and outline its potential applications in advanced photonics technologies.

Abstract
Photoswitchable nanofibers and nanocomposite fibers containing plasmonic nanoparticles have attracted a great deal of interest in optical and plasmonic devices. Herein, photoswitchable poly(methyl methacrylate-co-vinylimidazole-co-spiropyran ethyl acrylate) (MVSP) and its copolymer with butyl acrylate (MBVSP) were prepared via emulsion polymerization, and the corresponding nanofibers (MVSP@NF and MBVSP@NF) and nanocomposite fibers (MVSP/Au@NF and MBVSP/Au@NF) containing AuNRs were fabricated through electrospinning. FTIR and 1H NMR analyses confirmed the progress of the copolymerization reaction. The morphology of the prepared nanofibers containing AuNRs with an aspect ratio of 2.5 was identified by SEM and TEM techniques. The inclusion of vinylimidazole into the copolymer chains resulted in well-dispersed AuNRs. Photoisomerization studies revealed a higher photochromic efficiency for MBVSP@F (reflective intensity of 37.4%) with respect to MVSP@NF (reflective intensity of 62.5%) because of the greater flexibility of the chains. In addition, the presence of AuNRs in the nanocomposite fibers with high absorptivity intensified the photochromic properties for both samples. The polarization-dependent plasmonic band of AuNRs was switched between 650 and 634 nm through the photoisomerization of nonpolar SP to polar MC reversibly for MVSP/Au@NF. This displacement was just 4 nm for MBVSP/Au@NF, owing to the limited coupling between AuNRs and MC isomers. Besides, the capability of both nanocomposite fibers for reversible optical patterning was investigated by fast write-erase cycles. Enhanced photofatigue resistance in those fibers and the photomodulation of the plasmonic band of AuNRs using SP to MC isomerization revealed their promising potential for optical patterning and on-demand real-time plasmonic devices.

Abstract
We report high refractive-index (RI) films composed of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (SSQ) matrices and various lanthanoid cations. The SSQ matrices were constructed from octaammonium SSQ by connecting with bipyridine dicarboxylic acid, which is expected to capture cations. By modulating the feed ratio between SSQ and dicarboxylic acid, the series of the SSQ matrices were obtained with variable cross-linking ratios among the SSQ units. Thin transparent films were able to be prepared through the drop-casting method with the aqueous mixtures containing SSQ matrices and various kinds of lanthanoid salts up to 40 wt %. From RI measurements, it was revealed that the increase of the amount of the metal ion can significantly lift up the RI values. In particular, critical losses of Abbe numbers, which theoretically have the trade-off relationship toward increases in RI values, were hardly detected. This effect could be obtained by cation assembly in local spots that are assisted by SSQ.

Abstract
We present a rational approach to fabricating plasmonically active hybrid polymer-metal nanomaterials with electrochemical tunability of the localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) of noble metal nanostructures embedded in an electroactive polymer matrix. The key requirement for being able to significantly modulate the LSPR band position is a close overlap between the refractive index change [Δn(λ)] of a stimuli-responsive polymeric matrix and the intrinsic LSPR bands. For this purpose, gold nanorods with a controlled aspect ratio, synthesized to provide high refractive index sensitivity while maintaining good oxidative stability, were combined with a solution-processable electroactive and electrochromic polymer (ECP): alkoxy-substituted poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) [PProDOT(CH2OEtHx)2]. Spectral characteristics of the ECP, in particular the Δn(λ) variation, were evaluated as the material was switched between oxidized and reduced states. We fabricated ultrathin plasmonic electrochromic hybrid films consisting of gold nanorods and ECP that exhibited a large, stable, and reversible LSPR modulation of up to 25-30 nm with an applied electrical potential. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations confirm a good match between the experimentally measured refractive index change in the ECP and the plasmonic response during electrochemical modulations.
