Exploring the Gas Phase Synthesis of the Elusive Class of Boronyls and the Mechanism of Boronyl Radical Reactions under Single Collision Conditions

Reaction N(2D) + CH2CCH2 (Allene): An Experimental and Theoretical Investigation and Implications for the Photochemical Models of Titan

We report on a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the N(²D) + CH₂CCH₂ (allene) reaction of relevance in the atmospheric chemistry of Titan. Experimentally, the reaction was investigated (i) under single-collision conditions by the crossed molecular beams (CMB) scattering method with mass spectrometric detection and time-of-flight analysis at the collision energy (E _c) of 33 kJ/mol to determine the primary products and the reaction micromechanism and (ii) in a continuous supersonic flow reactor to determine the rate constant as a function of temperature from 50 to 296 K. Theoretically, electronic structure calculations of the doublet C₃H₄N potential energy surface (PES) were performed to assist the interpretation of the experimental results and characterize the overall reaction mechanism. The reaction is found to proceed via barrierless addition of N(²D) to one of the two equivalent carbon-carbon double bonds of CH₂CCH₂, followed by the formation of several cyclic and linear isomeric C₃H₄N intermediates that can undergo unimolecular decomposition to bimolecular products with elimination of H, CH₃, HCN, HNC, and CN. The kinetic experiments confirm the barrierless nature of the reaction through the measurement of rate constants close to the gas-kinetic rate at all temperatures. Statistical estimates of product branching fractions (BFs) on the theoretical PES were carried out under the conditions of the CMB experiments at room temperature and at temperatures (94 and 175 K) relevant for Titan. Up to 14 competing product channels were statistically predicted with the main ones at E _c = 33 kJ/mol being formation of cyclic-CH₂C(N)CH + H (BF = 87.0%) followed by CHCCHNH + H (BF = 10.5%) and CH₂CCNH + H (BF = 1.4%) the other 11 possible channels being negligible (BFs ranging from 0 to 0.5%). BFs under the other conditions are essentially unchanged. Experimental dynamical information could only be obtained on the overall H-displacement channel, while other possible channels could not be confirmed within the sensitivity of the method. This is also in line with theoretical predictions as the other possible channels are predicted to be negligible, including the HCN/HNC + C₂H₃ (vinyl) channels (overall BF < 1%). The dynamics and product distributions are dramatically different with respect to those observed in the isomeric reaction N(²D) + CH₃CCH (propyne), where at a similar E _c the main product channels are CH₂NH (methanimine) + C₂H (BF = 41%), c-C(N)CH + CH₃ (BF = 32%), and CH₂CHCN (vinyl cyanide) + H (BF = 12%). Rate coefficients (the recommended value is 1.7 (±0.2) × 10^-10 cm³ s^-1 over the 50-300 K range) and BFs have been used in a photochemical model of Titan's atmosphere to simulate the effect of the title reaction on the species abundance (including any new products formed) as a function of the altitude.

Photochemically triggered cheletropic formation of cyclopropenone (c-C3H2O) from carbon monoxide and electronically excited acetylene

For more than half a century, pericyclic reactions have played an important role in advancing our fundamental understanding of cycloadditions, sigmatropic shifts, group transfer reactions, and electrocyclization reactions. However, the fundamental mechanisms of photochemically activated cheletropic reactions have remained contentious. Here we report on the simplest cheletropic reaction: the [2+1] addition of ground state ¹⁸O-carbon monoxide (C¹⁸O, X¹Σ⁺) to D2-acetylene (C₂D₂) photochemically excited to the first excited triplet (T1), second excited triplet (T2), and first excited singlet state (S1) at 5 K, leading to the formation of D2-¹⁸O-cyclopropenone (c-C₃D₂¹⁸O). Supported by quantum-chemical calculations, our investigation provides persuasive testimony on stepwise cheletropic reaction pathways to cyclopropenone via excited state dynamics involving the T2 (non-adiabatic) and S1 state (adiabatic) of acetylene at 5 K, while the T1 state energetically favors an intermediate structure that directly dissociates after relaxing to the ground state. The agreement between experiments in low temperature ices and the excited state calculations signifies how photolysis experiments coupled with theoretical calculations can untangle polyatomic reactions with relevance to fundamental physical organic chemistry at the molecular level, thus affording a versatile strategy to unravel exotic non-equilibrium chemistries in cyclic, aromatic organics. Distinct from traditional radical-radical pathways leading to organic molecules on ice-coated interstellar nanoparticles (interstellar grains) in cold molecular clouds and star-forming regions, the photolytic formation of cyclopropenone as presented changes the perception of how we explain the formation of complex organics in the interstellar medium eventually leading to the molecular precursors of biorelevant molecules.

Structures and chemical bonding of boron-based B12O and B11Au clusters. A counterexample in boronyl chemistry

Boron oxide clusters have structural diversity and unique chemical bonding, and recent literature has shown that boronyl complexes dominate boron-rich oxide clusters. A counterexample in boronyl chemistry is presented in this work. Using global structural searches, electronic structure calculations, and chemical bonding analyses, we shall report on the computational design of two boron-based quasi-planar or planar clusters: B₁₂O and B₁₁Au. Contrary to expectation, the B₁₂O cluster has a circular quasi-planar shape with a peripheral B-O-B bridge, which resembles bare B₁₂ cluster. It does not contain a boronyl ligand. The isomeric boronyl complex turns out to be 10.32 kcal mol^-1 higher in energy at the single-point CCSD(T) level. In contrast, B₁₁Au cluster behaves normally with an elongated B₁₁ moiety and a terminal Au ligand. Chemical bonding analyses reveal three-fold π/σ aromaticity in circular B₁₂O cluster, including global 6π aromaticity, as well as spatially isolated inner 2σ aromaticity and outer 10σ aromaticity. The three-fold 6π/2σ/10σ aromaticity underlies the stability of B₁₂O cluster. This bonding picture is unknown for bare B₁₂ cluster and its derivatives. The elongated B₁₁Au cluster has conflicting π/σ aromaticity (with 6π versus 8σ electron-counting). The B₁₂O cluster is actually isoelectronic with bare B₁₂ cluster in terms of delocalized π/σ bonding, which inherits the structural and electronic robustness of the latter.

A Barrierless Pathway Accessing the C9H9 and C9H8 Potential Energy Surfaces via the Elementary Reaction of Benzene with 1-Propynyl

The crossed molecular beams reactions of the 1-propynyl radical (CH₃CC; X²A₁) with benzene (C₆H₆; X¹A_1g) and D6-benzene (C₆D₆; X¹A_1g) were conducted to explore the formation of C₉H₈ isomers under single-collision conditions. The underlying reaction mechanisms were unravelled through the combination of the experimental data with electronic structure and statistical RRKM calculations. These data suggest the formation of 1-phenyl-1-propyne (C₆H₅CCCH₃) via the barrierless addition of 1-propynyl to benzene forming a low-lying doublet C₉H₉ intermediate that dissociates by hydrogen atom emission via a tight transition state. In accordance with our experiments, RRKM calculations predict that the thermodynamically most stable isomer – the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) indene – is not formed via this reaction. With all barriers lying below the energy of the reactants, this reaction is viable in the cold interstellar medium where several methyl-substituted molecules have been detected. Its underlying mechanism therefore advances our understanding of how methyl-substituted hydrocarbons can be formed under extreme conditions such as those found in the molecular cloud TMC-1. Implications for the chemistry of the 1-propynyl radical in astrophysical environments are also discussed.

Boron-based inorganic heterocyclic clusters: electronic structure, chemical bonding, aromaticity, and analogy to hydrocarbons

This Perspective article deals with recent computational and experimental findings in boron-based heterocyclic clusters, which focuses on binary B-O and B-S clusters, as well as relevant ternary B-X-H (X = O, S, N) species. Boron is electron-deficient and boron clusters do not form monocyclic rings or linear chains. Boron-based heterocyclic clusters are intuitively even more electron-deficient and feature exotic chemical bonding, which make use of O 2p, S 3p, or N 2p lone-pairs for π delocalization over heterocyclic rings, facilitating new cluster structures and new types of bonding. Rhombic, pentagonal, hexagonal, and polycyclic clusters are discussed herein. Rhombic species are stabilized by four-center four-electron (4c-4e) π bonding, that is, the o-bond. An o-bond cluster differs from a typical 4π antiaromatic system, because it has 4π electrons in an unusual bonding/nonbonding combination, which takes advantage of the empty 2p_z atomic orbitals from electron-deficient boron centers. A variety of examples (notably including boronyl boroxine) possess a hexagonal ring, as well as magic 6π electron-counting, making them new members of the inorganic benzene family. Pentagonal clusters bridge rhombic o-bond systems and inorganic benzenes, but they do not necessarily favor 6π electron-counting as in cyclopentadienide anion. In contrast, pentagonal 4π clusters are stable, leading to the concept of pentagonal o-bond. One electron can overturn the potential energy landscape of a system, enabling rhombic-to-hexagonal structural transition, which further reinforces the idea that 4π electron-counting is favorable for rhombic systems and 6π is magic for hexagonal rings. The bonding analogy between heterocyclic clusters and hydrocarbons goes beyond monocyclic species, which allows rational design of boron-based inorganic analogs of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, including s-indacene as a puzzling aromatic/antiaromatic system. Selected linear B-O clusters are also briefly discussed, featuring dual 3c-4e π bonds, that is, ω-hyperbonds. Dual ω-hyperbonds, rhombic or pentagonal o-bond, and inorganic benzenes share a common chemical origin. The field of boron-based heterocyclic clusters is still in its infant stage, and much new chemistry remains to be discovered in forthcoming experimental and theoretical studies.

Elucidation of the Formation Mechanisms of the Octahydrotriborate Anion (B3H8-) through the Nucleophilicity of the B-H Bond

Boron compounds are well-known electrophiles. Much less known are their nucleophilic properties. By recognition of the nucleophilicity of the B-H bond, the formation mechanism of octahydrotriborate (B₃H₈^-) was elucidated on the bases of both experimental and computational investigations. Two possible routes from the reaction of BH₄^- and THF·BH₃ to B₃H₈^- were proposed, both involving the B₂H₆ and BH₄^- intermediates. The two pathways consist of a set of complicated intermediates, which can convert to each other reversibly at room temperature and can be represented by a reaction circle. Only under reflux can the B₂H₆ and BH₄^- intermediates be converted to B₂H₅^- and BH₃(H₂) via a high energy barrier, from which H₂ elimination occurs to yield the B₃H₈^- final product. The formation of B₂H₆ from THF·BH₃ by nucleophilic substitution of the B-H bond was captured and identified, and the reaction of B₂H₆ with BH₄^- to produce B₃H₈^- was confirmed experimentally. On the bases of the formation mechanisms of B₃H₈^-, we have developed a facile synthetic method for MB₃H₈ (M = Li and Na) in high yields by directly reacting the corresponding MBH₄ salts with THF·BH₃. In the new synthetic method for MB₃H₈, no electron carriers are needed, allowing convenient preparation of MB₃H₈ in large scales and paving the way for their wide applications.

Structural Trends in Monoboronyl Compounds: Analysis of the Interaction of Second-Row Elements with BO

A theoretical study of the monoboronyl compounds of second-row elements, [XBO] (X = Na, Si, P, S, Cl), has been carried out. It is observed that the preference for the XBO arrangement is higher when moving to the right of the period. In the case of sodium monoboronyl three minima were characterized, all lying rather close in energy: linear NaBO, linear NaOB, and an L-shaped structure. Linear NaBO and the L-shaped structure are nearly isoenergetic, whereas linear NaOB is located 2.11 kcal/mol above linear NaBO. The barrier for the conversion of the L-shaped structure into linear NaBO is about 5.1 kcal/mol, suggesting that both species could be potential targets for experimental detection. For silicon monoboronyl, two minima, linear SiBO and linear SiOB, are found, the latter lying about 13 kcal/mol above SiBO. The barrier for the isomerization of SiOB into SiBO is estimated to be 11.4 kcal/mol. For phosphorus, sulfur, and chlorine monoboronyls the linear XBO isomer is clearly the most stable one, and the barriers for the conversion into XOB species are relatively high, suggesting that quite likely the linear XBO isomer should be the main experimental target. All studied monoboronyls are relatively stable, with dissociation energies increasing from left to right of the second-row (69.8 kcal/mol for NaBO and 118.98 kcal/mol for ClBO). An analysis of the bonding for second-row monoboronyls has been carried out, emphasizing the different characteristics of the X-B and X-O bonds along the second row.
