Exploring the Impact of Elements on the Reactivity of a Straightforward Procedure for Generating Vinyl-Carbazole Derivatives via a Frustrated Lewis Pair Mechanism

The effect of chemical element on the reactivity for carbazolation reaction of phenylacetylene utilizing G13(C6F5)3 (Lewis acid) and G15-carbazole (Lewis base) was theoretically investigated using density functional theory (M06-2X-D3/def2-TZVP), where G13 represents Group 13 elements and G15 represents Group 15 elements. Through activation strain model (ASM) analysis, it is apparent that the reactivity of the entire carbazolation reaction is chiefly governed by the structural strain energy of the alkyne fragment. In other words, if G13(C6F5)3 or G15-carbazole features an atomic radius that is either too small (e.g., B atom) or too large (e.g., Tl or Bi atom), it results in inadequate orbital overlap between the reactants due to the impact of steric effects. This, in turn, results in an elevation of the activation energy for such reactions, thereby impeding the alkyne from undergoing the carbazole catalytic reaction. In light of the above analyses, our theoretical findings suggest that, except for Tl(C6F5)3, the other four Lewis acid catalysts (B(C6F5)3, Al(C6F5)3, Ga((C6F5)3, and In((C6F5)3) demonstrate effectiveness in catalyzing the carbazolation reaction of alkyne alongside with N-carbazole. Additionally, it is anticipated that, among the five categories of G15-carbazole molecules studied, only N-carbazole can participate in the carbazolation reaction with alkyne catalyzed by B(C6F5)3, considering both kinetic and thermodynamic factors at room temperature. Our theoretical investigations, as outlined in this study, indicate that the carbazolation reaction of the alkyne, catalyzed by G13(C6F5)3 and G15-carbazole, follows Hammond's postulate. To put it more plainly, when the transition state of the chemical reaction occurs earlier, it results in a decrease in activation energy.

Multireference Ab Initio Calculations on Excited Electronic States of Carbazole-Based Organic Compounds for Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence

The emerging technology of organic light-emitting diodes takes advantage of the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) mechanism for improved efficiency. Carbazole-based organic molecules are suitable for TADF emission because of charge transfer excitations between the electron-donor carbazole and an electron-acceptor unit. Computational design of new TADF molecules with the desired properties is challenging because charge-transfer excitations cannot be predicted accurately by time-dependent density functional theory. Four groups of carbazole-based donor-acceptor molecules have been studied using multireference ab initio methods to understand the nature of excited electronic states. The state-averaged complete active space self-consistent field (SA-CASSCF) and the N-electron valence state perturbation theory (NEVPT2) were used to calculate energies and oscillator strengths for multiple excited electronic states. The number of active electrons and orbitals and the number of excited states included in state-averaged CASSCF were selected such that the accuracy of ab initio predictions could be improved systematically. The procedure introduced here for the calculation of multiple excited electronic states of TADF candidates can be used to accelerate the computational search for efficient TADF materials.

Access to 5-Methyl-5H-naphtho[2,3-c]carbazole-8,13-dione Derivatives via Copper-Catalyzed Intramolecular Isomerization

Carbazole-fused quinones are important compounds for their potential pharmacological activities and photophysical properties. Here, a novel copper-catalyzed intramolecular isomerization process to access a new class of naphtho[2,3-c]carbazole-8,13-dione derivatives via a furan isomerization/γ-H elimination and β-C elimination/6π-electrocyclization/aromatization cascade is reported. Furthermore, the preliminary photophysical properties of the functional 5-methyl-5H-naphtho[2,3-c]carbazole-8,13-dione derivatives have been studied.

Recent synthetic strategies for the construction of functionalized carbazoles and their heterocyclic motifs enabled by Lewis acids

This article demonstrates recent innovative cascade annulation methods for preparing functionalized carbazoles and their related polyaromatic heterocyclic compounds enabled by Lewis acid catalysts. Highly substituted carbazole scaffolds were synthesized via Lewis acid mediated Friedel-Crafts arylation, electrocyclization, intramolecular cyclization, cycloaddition, C-N bond-formations, aromatization and cascade domino reactions, metal-catalyzed, iodine catalyzed reactions and multi-component reactions. This review article mainly focuses on Lewis acid-mediated recent synthetic methods to access a variety of electron-rich and electron-poor functional groups substituted carbazole frameworks in one-pot reactions. Polyaromatic carbazole and their related nitrogen-based heterocyclic compounds were found in several synthetic applications in pharma industries, energy devices, and materials sciences. Moreover, the review paper briefly summarised new synthetic strategies of carbazole preparation approaches will assist academic and pharma industries in identifying innovative protocols for producing poly-functionalized carbazoles and related highly complex heterocyclic compounds and discovering active pharmaceutical drugs or carbazole-based alkaloids and natural products.

Interpretable Deep-Learning Unveils Structure-Property Relationships in Polybenzenoid Hydrocarbons

In this work, interpretable deep learning was used to identify structure-property relationships governing the HOMO-LUMO gap and the relative stability of polybenzenoid hydrocarbons (PBHs) using a ring-based graph representation. This representation was combined with a subunit-based perception of PBHs, allowing chemical insights to be presented in terms of intuitive and simple structural motifs. The resulting insights agree with conventional organic chemistry knowledge and electronic structure-based analyses and also reveal new behaviors and identify influential structural motifs. In particular, we evaluated and compared the effects of linear, angular, and branching motifs on these two molecular properties and explored the role of dispersion in mitigating the torsional strain inherent in nonplanar PBHs. Hence, the observed regularities and the proposed analysis contribute to a deeper understanding of the behavior of PBHs and form the foundation for design strategies for new functional PBHs.

Small carbazole-based molecules as hole transporting materials for perovskite solar cells

In this study, six small carbazole-based molecules are investigated for usage as hole transport materials (HTMs) in perovskite solar cells. Among these compounds, two molecules based on 9-(4-(thiophen-2-yl)phenyl)-9H-carbazole thiophene-phenyle and carbazole (M₁ and M₂) were already synthesized, and four new molecules are designed by substituting carbazole, in positions 3,6 and 2,7, with methoxyphenyl (P₁ and P₂) and dimethoxyphenylamine (E₁ and E₂). Theoretical methods used in the calculations included density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory. FMOs of all under-probe molecules are well positioned to ensure accurate alignment and prevent charge recombination at the perovskite material interface. The molecules' absorbance in the area below 404 nm shows that HTMs cannot compete with perovskite materials in an inverted configuration of a device. Reorganization energies indicate that M₁, P_1,2 and E_1,2 are more favourable to be HTM, while M₂ shows a favourable electron transfer; it can be used as an electron transfer material (ETM). The results demonstrate that hole-electron couples can easily separate for any under-exanimated molecules, simplifying hole transport and enhancing the short-circuit (J_SC). Additionally, DMPA-based molecules (E_1,2) may display chemical instability because of their poor hardness and the local distribution of charge in electrostatic potential maps.

High-Performance Shortwave Infrared Detector Based on Multilayer Carbon Nanotube Films

Carbon nanotube (CNT) is an ideal candidate material for shortwave infrared (SWIR) detectors due to its large band gap tunability, strong infrared light absorption, and high mobility. Furthermore, the photodetectors based on CNT can be prepared on any substrate using a low-temperature process, which is conducive to three-dimensional (3D) integration. However, owing to the absorption limitation (<2%) of a single-layer network CNT film with low density, the photodetectors of CNT film show low photocurrent responsivity and detectivity. In this paper, we optimize the thickness of the high-purity semiconducting network CNT films to increase the photocurrent responsivity of the photodetectors. When the thickness of network CNT film is about 5 nm, the responsivity of the zero-bias voltage can reach 32 mA/W at 1800 nm wavelength. Then, using stacked CNT films and contact electrode design, the photodetectors exhibit a maximum responsivity of 120 mA/W at 1800 nm wavelength. The photodetectors with stacked CNT films and local n-type channel doping demonstrated a wide response spectral range of 1200-2100 nm, a peak detectivity of 3.94 × 10⁹ Jones at room temperature, and a linear dynamic range over 118 dB. Moreover, the peak detectivity is over 2.27 × 10¹¹ Jones when the temperature is 180 K. Our work demonstrates the potential of the CNT film for future SWIR imaging at a low cost.

Ligand-Dependant Selective Synthesis of Mono- and Dialkenylcarbazoles through Rhodium(III)-Catalyzed C-H Alkenylation

The C-H alkenylation of N-acetylcarbazoles proceeds smoothly at the C1-position in the presence of a cationic Cp*Rh(III) catalyst to produce 1-alkenylcarbazoles. The use of a cationic Cp^E Rh(III) catalyst enables further alkenylation to give 1,8-dialkenylcarbazoles. The direct alkenylation procedure in combination with the ready removal of the acetyl directing group provides a straightforward synthetic pathway to 1- and/or 8-alkenyl-N-H-carbazole derivatives. One of 1-alkenyl-N-H-carbazoles obtained by the present C-H alkenylation/deacetylation exhibits solvatochromism.

Assessing Carbazole Derivatives as Single-Electron Photoreductants

The electron-donating capabilities of carbazoles have stimulated interest in their use as photoinduced single-electron reductants. Due to the modularity of the carbazole, a further broadening and understanding of their reactivity could be achieved by manipulating the structure. Herein, eight carbazole derivatives were synthesized, characterized, and assessed as single-electron photoreductants in the hydrodehalogenation of aryl halides and the arylation of N-methylpyrrole.

Triarylamine/Bithiophene Copolymer with Enhanced Quinoidal Character as Hole-Transporting Material for Perovskite Solar Cells

Polytriarylamine is a popular hole-transporting materials (HTMs) despite its suboptimal conductivity and significant recombination at the interface in a solar cell setup. Having noted insufficient conjugation among the triarylamine units along the polymer backbone, we inserted a bithiophene unit between two triarylamine units through iron-catalyzed C-H/C-H coupling of a triarylamine/thiophene monomer so that two units conjugate effectively via four quinoidal rings when the molecule functions as HTM. The obtained triarylamine/bithiophene copolymer (TABT) used as HTM showed a high-performance in methylammonium lead iodide perovskite (MAPbI₃ ) solar cells. Mesityl substituted TABT forms a uniform film, shows high hole-carrier mobility, and has an ionization potential (IP=5.40 eV) matching that of MAPbI₃ . We fabricated a solar cell device with a power conversion efficiency of 21.3 % and an open-circuit voltage of 1.15 V, which exceeds the performance of devices using reference standard such as poly[bis(4-phenyl)(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)amine (PTAA) and Spiro-OMeTAD.

3,6-Carbazoylene Octaphyrin (1.0.0.0.1.0.0.0) and Its Bis-BF2 Complex

3,6-Carbazole precursors were used to prepare an octaphyrin. The conformation and electronic structure of the system could be modulated through trifluoroacetate (TFA) protonation and BF₂ complexation. The resulting nonaromatic macrocyclic complexes, 2-2TFA and 2-2BF₂, displayed noteworthy photophysical properties. For instance, the diprotonated species 2-2TFA showed a strong panchromic absorption up to 800 nm, while the bis-BF₂-chelated dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-like complex 2-2BF₂ exhibited an intense visible absorption feature (ε_535nm = 2.1 × 10⁵ M^-1 cm^-1), as well as a relatively red-shifted emission at 640 nm characterized by a large Stokes shift. It was found that 2-2BF₂ could be used to construct a high-quality organic microlaser that functions under optical pumping. The present study highlights the potential utility of expanded porphyrins as possible laser dyes.

Photoinduced Construction of a Benzothienopyridine-S,S-dioxide Framework Enabled by Polychloropyridyl Multifunctional Motifs

Reported herein is a visible-light-induced, catalyst-free intramolecular cyclization of 4-phenylsulfonyl-2,3,5,6-tetrachloropyridine, leading to rapid assembly of a series of unprecedented benzo[4,5]thieno[3,2-c]pyridine 5,5-dioxide scaffolds under mild conditions. The rational introduction of a perchloropyridin-4-yl module significantly facilitated this photoinduced process and offers a versatile platform for broad structural variation. Mechanistic studies revealed that a newly identified charge-transfer complex with carbonate is crucial to this photoinduced process.

Suzuki-Miyaura Catalyst-Transfer Polycondensation of Triolborate-Type Carbazole Monomers

Herein, we report the Suzuki–Miyaura catalyst-transfer polycondensation (SCTP) of triolborate-type carbazole monomers, i.e., potassium 3-(6-bromo-9-(2-octyldodecyl)-9H-carbazole-2-yl)triolborate (M1) and potassium 2-(7-bromo-9-(2-octyldodecyl)-9H-carbazole-2-yl) triolborate (M2), as an efficient and versatile approach for precisely synthesizing poly[9-(2-octyldodecyl)-3,6-carbazole] (3,6-PCz) and poly[9-(2-octyldodecyl)-2,7-carbazole] (2,7-PCz), respectively. The SCTP of triolborate-type carbazole monomers was performed in a mixture of THF/H₂O using an initiating system consisted of 4-iodobenzyl alcohol, Pd₂(dba)₃•CHCl₃, and t-Bu₃P. In the SCTP of M1, cyclic by-product formation was confirmed, as reported for the corresponding pinacolboronate-type monomer. By optimizing the reaction temperature and reaction time, we successfully synthesized linear end-functionalized 3,6-PCz for the first time. The SCTP of M2 proceeded with almost no side reaction, yielding 2,7-PCz with a functional initiator residue at the α-chain end. Kinetic and block copolymerization experiments demonstrated that the SCTP of M2 proceeded in a chain-growth and controlled/living polymerization manner. This is a novel study on the synthesis of 2,7-PCz via SCTP. By taking advantage of the well-controlled nature of this polymerization system, we demonstrated the synthesis of high-molecular-weight 2,7-PCzs (M_n = 5–38 kg mol⁻¹) with a relatively narrow Ð_M (1.35–1.48). Furthermore, we successfully synthesized fluorene/carbazole copolymers as well as 2,7-PCz-containing diblock copolymers, demonstrating the versatility of the present polymerization system as a novel synthetic strategy for well-defined polycarbazole-based materials.

Cascade annulative π-extension for the rapid construction of carbazole based polyaromatic hydrocarbons

A Brønsted acid catalyzed cascade benzannulation strategy for the one-pot synthesis of densely populated poly-aryl benzo[a]carbazole architectures is disclosed from easily affordable fundamental commodities. The efficacy of this technique was further validated via the concise synthesis of structurally unique carbazole based poly-aromatic hydrocarbons. Furthermore, the photo-physical properties of the synthesized compounds are thoroughly investigated.

Substrate-Controlled Regiodivergent Synthesis of Fluoroacylated Carbazoles via Friedel-Crafts Acylation

A general, efficient, and substrate-controlled regiodivergent trifluoroacetylation of carbazoles has been developed through Friedel-Crafts acylation. This strategy was applicable to a wide scope of readily available substituted carbazoles at air atmosphere without using a metal catalyst, affording the corresponding trifluoroacetylated carbazoles in up to 99% yield. The divergency of the products and the orientation rules have been illustrated based on different substituents on carbazole rings. This method could also be extended to the synthesis of chlorodifluoroacetylated and pentafluoropropionylated carbazoles, which have been achieved for the first time.

Theoretical design of low bandgap donor-acceptor (D-A) monomers for polymer solar cells: DFT and TD-DFT study

Endeavors have been made to construct new donor-acceptor (D-A) monomers utilizing 9 H-carbazole (CB) as electron donors and different electron acceptors. All estimations were finished using DFT and TD-DFT, and B3LYP level with a 6-311 G basis set in the gas and chloroform solvent. The impacts of the distinctive acceptors on the geometry of molecules and optoelectronic properties of these D-A monomers were discussed to dissect the connection connecting the molecular structures and the optoelectronic properties. Likewise, the HOMO - LUMO energies, atomic orbital densities are calculated theoretically. Notwithstanding the charge transfer measure between the carbazole electron donor unit and the electron acceptor one is upheld by breaking down the optical spectra of the acquired monomers and the restriction of involved HOMO and LUMO. The outcomes show that the D-A monomers, CB-ODP, CB-TDP, and CB-SDP, are acceptable for optoelectronic applications in organic solar cells like BHJ.

Click-Functionalization of a Poly(Tetrazine-co-Fluorene)-Conjugated Polymer with a Series of trans-Cyclooctene Derivatives

A soluble poly(tetrazine) polymer was prepared via Suzuki polycondensation of 3,6-bis(5-bromofuran-2-yl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine and a fluorene diboronate derivative. It can undergo efficient and quantitative post-polymerization inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder click reactions with a variety of trans-cyclooctene (TCO) derivatives. The resulting polymers were oxidized to convert dihydropyridazine rings into pyridazines. The absorption spectra of the product polymers, both before and after oxidation, showed hypsochromic shifts that correlated with steric hindrance of the appended side chains. They also exhibited a significantly enhanced fluorescence intensity relative to the original poly(tetrazine). While gel-permeation chromatography indicated that the product polymers exhibited longer retention times, NMR end-group analysis showed that the polymers retained relatively constant degrees of polymerization. Graft copolymers were easily prepared via reaction with TCO-functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) chains and a cross-linked foam was produced by reacting the poly(tetrazine) with a bis-TCO crosslinker.

Abdullah S, Brza MA, Abdulwahid RT. Influence of Fluorine Substitution on the Optical, Thermal, Electrochemical and Structural Properties of Carbazole-Benzothiadiazole Dicarboxylic Imide Alternate Copolymers

In this work four novel donor-acceptor copolymers, PCDTBTDI-DMO, PCDTBTDI-8, P2F-CDTBTDI-DMO and P2F-CDTBTDI-8, were designed and synthesised via Suzuki polymerisation. The first two copolymers consist of 2,7-carbazole flanked by thienyl moieties as the electron donor unit and benzothiadiazole dicarboxylic imide (BTDI) as electron acceptor units. In the structures of P2F-CDTBTDI-DMO and P2F-CDTBTDI-8 copolymers, two fluorine atoms were incorporated at 3,6-positions of 2,7-carbazole to investigate the impact of fluorine upon the optoelectronic, structural and thermal properties of the resulting polymers. P2F-CDTBTDI-8 possesses the highest number average molecular weight (Mn = 24,200 g mol-1) among all the polymers synthesised. PCDTBTDI-DMO and PCDTBTDI-8 show identical optical band gaps of 1.76 eV. However, the optical band gaps of fluorinated copolymers are slightly higher than non-fluorinated counterparts. All polymers have deep-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels. Changing the alkyl chain substituents on BTDI moieties from linear n-octyl to branched 3,7-dimethyloctyl groups as well as substituting the two hydrogen atoms at 3,6-positions of carbazole unit by fluorine atoms has negligible impact on the HOMO levels of the polymers. Similarly, the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels are almost comparable for all polymers. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) has shown that all polymers have good thermal stability and also confirmed that the fluorinated copolymers have higher thermal stability relative to those non-fluorinated analogues. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies proved that all polymers have an amorphous nature in the solid state.

Dearomatization-Rearomatization Strategy for Synthesizing Carbazoles with 2,2'-Biphenols and Ammonia by Dual C(Ar)-OH Bond Cleavages

Carbazole is an essential building block in various pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, natural products, and materials. For future sustainability, it is highly desirable to synthesize carbazole derivatives directly from renewable resources or cheap raw materials. Phenolic compounds are a class of degradation products of lignin. On the other hand, ammonia is a very cheap industrial inorganic chemical. Herein, an efficient dearomatization-rearomatization strategy has been developed to directly cross-couple 2,2'-biphenols with ammonia by dual C(Ar)-OH bond cleavages. This strategy provides a greener pathway to synthesize valuable carbazole derivatives from phenols.

Separation of Semiconducting Carbon Nanotubes Using Conjugated Polymer Wrapping

In the past two decades, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been explored for electronic applications because of their high charge carrier mobility, low-temperature solution processability and mechanical flexibility. Semiconducting SWNTs (s-SWNTs) are also considered an alternative to traditional silicon-based semiconductors. However, large-scale, as-produced SWNTs have poor solubility, and they are mixtures of metallic SWNTs (m-SWNTs) and s-SWNTs, which limits their practical applications. Conjugated polymer wrapping is a promising method to disperse and separate s-SWNTs, due to its high selectivity, high separation yield and simplicity of operation. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of the conjugated polymer wrapping method, and discuss possible separation mechanisms for s-SWNTs. We also discuss various parameters that may affect the selectivity and sorting yield. Finally, some electronic applications of polymer-sorted s-SWNTs are introduced. The aim of this review is to provide polymer chemist a basic concept of polymer based SWNT separation, as well as some polymer design strategies, influential factors and potential applications.

Aggregation-Induced Fluorescence of Carbazole and o-Carborane Based Organic Fluorophore

Carbazole based fluorophores 9-butyl-3,6-bis-(phenylethynyl)-9H-carbazole (1) and 9-butyl-3,6-bis-(2-phenyl-o-carborane)-9H-carbazole (2) were synthesized via Sonogashira type cross-coupling reaction and followed by insertion with decaborane. Compound 1 exhibited far more intense fluorescence than 2 in THF solution, while in solid state 2 exerted stronger fluorescence than 1. The fluorescence quenching behavior of 2 in THF solution could be attributed to the intramolecular charge transfer of donor-acceptor system in 2, which was confirmed by electrochemical experiments and DFT calculations. The fluorescence enhancement of 2 in solid state can be ascribed to aggregational induced packing which was evidenced by crystallographic study. In addition, compound 2 showed typical aggregation induced emission (AIE) behavior.

Synthesis of N-Alkyl and N-H-Carbazoles through SN Ar-Based Aminations of Dibenzothiophene Dioxides

Alkyl amines have become available for the synthesis of diverse N-alkyl carbazoles through twofold S_N Ar aminations of dibenzothiophene dioxides by using alkali metal bases. Of particular importance is the choice of counter cations on alkali metal bases, that is, i) the use of Li base for the efficient intermolecular reaction and ii) the sequential addition of heavier alkali metal bases (Na, K, or Cs) to promote intramolecular cyclization in a one-pot manner. This protocol also enables the cascade synthesis of N-H-carbazoles by using 2-phenylethylamine by removal of the 2-phenethyl group from N-(2-phenethyl) carbazoles in a single operation.

Carbazole-containing porphyrinoid and its oligomers

A novel carbazole-containing porphyrinoid 4H and its oligomers 6H and 7H were synthesized for the first time via the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. The structures of 4H, 4Pd, 6H, and 6Zn were finally confirmed by X-ray analysis. The exciton coupling strength (628 cm^-1) in 4Zn, 6Zn, and 7Zn was found to be larger than that of the directly-linked porphyrin arrays (570 cm^-1), extending their absorption spectra to the NIR region as well as enhancing the extinction coefficients.

Blue-/NIR Light-Excited Fluorescence Switch Based on a Carbazole-Dithienylethene-BF2bdk Triad

The development of novel solid-state fluorescence switches, particularly triggered by visible light, is of increasing interest for the potential application in optical data storage and super-resolution fluorescence microscopies. In this study, two carbazole-dithienylethene-BF₂bdk triads CDB1 and CDB2, suspending carbazole and BF₂bdk moieties on both sides of dithienylethene unit, have been developed. They exhibit blue-/NIR light-controlled photochromism with solvent-dependent characteristics. Moreover, CDB1 (o) reveals blue-/NIR light-induced reversible fluorescent switching behaviors in toluene, chloroform, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film, and powder state, while its analogue CDB2 (o) in the powder state exhibits no fluorescence due to a strong intermolecular π-π stacking interaction, and the fluorescent switching performance is observed only in toluene and PMMA film. The density functional theory calculations further validate the differences in their optical properties in the solution and powder states.

Carbon nanotube fibers with enhanced longitudinal carrier mobility for high-performance all-carbon thermoelectric generators

With the increase in practical interest in flexible thermoelectric (TE) generators, the demand for high-performance alternatives to brittle TE materials is growing. Herein, we have demonstrated wet-spun CNT fibers with high TE performance by systematically controlling the longitudinal carrier mobility without a significant change in the carrier concentration. The carrier mobility optimized by CNT alignment increases the electrical conductivity without decreasing the thermopower, thus improving the power factor. On further adjusting the charge carriers via mild annealing, the CNT fibers exhibit a high power factor of 432 μW m-1 K-2. Based on the excellent TE performance and shape advantages for modular design of the CNT fiber, the all-carbon based flexible TE generator without an additional metal electrode has been fabricated. The flexible TE generator based on 40 pairs of p- and n-type CNT fibers shows the maximum power density of 15.4 and 259 μW g-1 at temperature differences (ΔT) of 5 and 20 K, respectively, currently one of the highest values reported for TE generators based on flexible materials. The strategy proposed here can improve the performance of flexible TE fibers by optimizing the carrier mobility without a change in the carrier concentration, and shows great potential for flexible TE generators.
