Abstract
Improving the efficiency of tin-based perovskite solar cells (TPSCs) is significantly hindered by energy level mismatch and weak interactions at the interface between the tin-based perovskite and fullerene-based electron transport layers (ETLs). In this study, four well-defined multidentate fullerene molecules with 3, 4, 5, and 6 diethylmalonate groups, labeled as FM3, FM4, FM5, and FM6 are synthesized, and employed as interfacial layers in TPSCs. It is observed that increasing the number of functional groups in these fullerenes leads to shallower lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels and enhance interfacial chemical interactions. Notably, FM5 exhibits a suitable energy level and robust interaction with the perovskite, effectively enhancing electron extraction and defect passivation. Additionally, the unique molecular structure of FM5 allows the exposed carbon cage to be tightly stacked with the upper fullerene cage after interaction with the perovskite, facilitating efficient charge transfer and protecting the perovskite from moisture and oxygen damage. As a result, the FM5-based device achieves a champion efficiency of 15.05%, significantly surpassing that of the PCBM-based (11.77%), FM3-based (13.54%), FM4-based (14.34%), and FM6-based (13.75%) devices. Moreover, the FM5-based unencapsulated device exhibits excellent stability, maintaining over 90% of its initial efficiency even after 300 h of air exposure.

Abstract
The addition reaction of C60 with silylene 1, a silicon analog of carbene, yielded the corresponding bis-adduct 3. The structure of 3 was determined by single-crystal X-ray structure analysis, representing the first example of a crystal structure of a silirane (silacyclopropane) derivative of fullerenes. Electrochemical measurements confirmed that the redox potentials of 3 are shifted cathodically compared to those of the parent mono-adduct 2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided the basis for the electronic properties of compound 3.

Abstract
Designing and synthesizing fullerene bisadducts with a higher-lying conduction band minimum is promising to further improve the device performance of tin-based perovskite solar cells (TPSCs). However, the commonly obtained fullerene bisadduct products are isomeric mixtures and require complicated separation. Moreover, the isomeric mixtures are prone to resulting in energy alignment disorders, interfacial charge loss, and limited device performance improvement. Herein, we synthesized single-isomer C60- and C70-based diethylmalonate functionalized bisadducts (C60BB and C70BB) by utilizing the steric-hindrance-assisted strategy and determined all molecular structures involved by single crystal diffraction. Meanwhile, we found that the different solvents used for processing the fullerene bisadducts can effectively regulate the molecular packing in their films. The dense and amorphous fullerene bisadduct films prepared by using anisole exhibited the highest electron mobility. Finally, C60BB- and C70BB-based TPSCs showed impressive efficiencies up to 14.51 and 14.28%, respectively. These devices also exhibited excellent long-term stability. This work highlights the importance of developing strategies to synthesize single-isomer fullerene bisadducts and regulate their molecular packing to improve TPSCs' performance.

Abstract
Fullerene adducts have attracted attention in a variety of applications including organic optoelectronic devices. In this regard, we have designed a covalently linked donor-acceptor dyad comprising a fluorobenzothiadiazole-thiophene (BTF2-Th) unit with the electron acceptor fullerene in an Acceptor-Donor-Acceptor (A-D-A) molecular arrangement. We synthesized and characterized two new covalently bonded benzothiadiazole-based fullerene molecules, mono-adduct, 7 (benzothiadiazole : PC61BM = 1 : 1, anchored terminally via esterification reaction) and multi-adduct, 10-I (benzothiadiazole : PC61BM = n : 1, where n ≥ 1, attached directly to the fullerene core via the Prato reaction) using different synthetic strategies. A broadening of the UV-visible spectra of the modified fullerene derivative with strong absorption from 350 to 500 nm and at low wavelengths is observed as compared to PC61BM. A suitable bandgap, good electronic conductivity, and appreciable solubility in solvents suggest their utility in optoelectronic devices. The mono-adduct 7 showed two-order higher electron mobility as compared to bis-adduct 10-I due to retention of extended conjugation in fullerene, as in the case of PC61BM. Experimentally determined optical properties and energy levels of the fullerene adducts were found to be in good agreement and supported by theoretical calculations. The presence of BTF2 affects the ground state dipole moments as well as the absorption strengths, most noticeable in the case of two attached BTF2 moieties. The HOMO and LUMO levels are found to be localized on the fullerene cage with the extension of the HOMO to the BTF2 unit more and the same is noticed in ground state dipole moment in the side-chain functionalized structure. Such structural arrangement provides easy charge transfer between acceptor and donor units to allow a concomitant effect of favorable optoelectronic properties, energy levels of the frontier orbitals, effective exciton dissociation, and charge transport which may reduce processing complexity to advance single material-based future optoelectronic devices.

Abstract
Multi-functionalization and isomer-purity of fullerenes are crucial tasks for the development of their chemistry in various fields. In both current main approaches-tether-directed covalent functionalization and supramolecular masks-the control of regioselectivity requires multi-step synthetic procedures to prepare the desired tether or mask. Herein, we describe light-responsive tethers, containing an azobenzene photoswitch and two malonate groups, in the double cyclopropanation of [60]fullerene. The formation of the bis-adducts and their spectroscopic and photochemical properties, as well as the effect of azobenzene photoswitching on the regiochemistry of the bis-addition, have been studied. The behavior of the tethers depends on the geometry of the connection between the photoactive core and the malonate moieties. One tether lead to a strikingly different adduct distribution for the E and Z isomers, indicating that the covalent bis-functionalization of C60 can be controlled by light.

Abstract
Ever since the discovery of fullerenes, their mono- and multi-functionalization by exohedral addition chemistry has been a fundamental topic. A few years ago, a topochemically controlled regiospecific difunctionalization of C60 fullerene by anthracene in the solid state was discovered. In the present work, we analyse the mechanism of this unique reaction, where an anthracene molecule is transferred from one C60 mono-adduct to another one, under exclusive formation of equal amounts of C60 and of the difficult to make, highly useful, antipodal C60 bis-adduct. Our herein disclosed dispersion corrected DFT studies show the anthracene transfer to take place in a synchronous retro Diels-Alder/Diels-Alder reaction: an anthracene molecule dissociates from one fullerene under formation of an intermediate, while undergoing stabilizing interactions with both neighbouring fullerene molecules, facilitating the reaction kinetically. In the intermediate, a planar anthracene molecule is sandwiched between two neighbouring fullerenes and forms equally strong 'double-decker' type π-π stacking interactions with both of these fullerenes. Analysis with the distortion interaction model shows that the anthracene unit of the intermediate is almost planar with minimal distortion. This analysis highlights the existence of simultaneous noncovalent interactions engaging both faces of a planar polyunsaturated ring and two convex fullerene surfaces in an unprecedented 'inverted sandwich' structure. Hence, it sheds light on new strategies to design functional fullerene based materials.

Abstract
The efficient and regioselective electrosynthesis of tetra- and hexa-functionalized [60]fullerene derivatives with unprecedented addition patterns has been achieved. The tetra-functionalized [60]fullerene derivative with an intriguing 1,2,4,17-addition pattern is regioselectively obtained by cyclization reaction of the dianionic species generated electrochemically from a [60]fulleroindoline with 1,2-bis(bromomethyl)benzene at 0 °C, and can be converted to the more stable 1,2,3,4-adduct at 25 °C. Furthermore, the hexa-functionalized [60]fullerene derivative with the 1,2,3,4,9,10-addition pattern displaying a unique "S"-shaped configuration can be synthesized by protonation of the electrochemically generated dianion of the obtained tetra-functionalized 1,2,4,17-adduct. The structures of the tetra- and hexa-functionalized products have been determined by spectroscopic data and single-crystal X-ray analysis.

Abstract
With the recent advance in chemical modification of fullerenes, electrosynthesis has demonstrated increasing importance in regioselective synthesis of novel fullerene derivatives. Herein, we report successively regioselective synthesis of stable tetra- and hexafunctionalized [60]fullerene derivatives. The cycloaddition reaction of the electrochemically generated dianions from [60]fulleroindolines with phthaloyl chloride regioselectively affords 1,2,4,17-functionalized [60]fullerene derivatives with two attached ketone groups and a unique addition pattern, where the heterocycle is rearranged to a [5,6]-junction and the carbocycle is fused to an adjacent [6,6]-junction. This addition pattern is in sharp contrast with that of the previously reported biscycloadducts, where both cycles are appended to [6,6]-junctions. The obtained tetrafunctionalized compounds can be successively manipulated to 1,2,3,4,9,10-functionalized [60]fullerene derivatives with an intriguing "S"-shaped configuration via a novel electrochemical protonation. Importantly, the stability of tetrafunctionalized [60]fullerene products allows them to be applied in planar perovskite solar cells as efficient electron transport layers.

Abstract
Efficient one-pot synthesis of new series of furylpyrazolino[60]fullerene derivatives was prepared by [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction mediated with (diacetoxyiodo)benzene (PhI(OAc)2) as an oxidant in o-dichlorobenzene (ODCB) under microwave irradiation. Different techniques have been used to confirm the structural identity including FT-IR, fast atom bombardment (FAB)-mass, NMR, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, in addition to investigating the photophysical properties and the electrochemical properties for the new compounds using UV-Vis spectra, fluorescence spectra, cyclic voltammetry, and square wave voltammetry. Three of these pyrazolino[60]fullerene compounds showed better electron affinity than the parent C60 in the ground state.

Abstract
Labile bis-triazoline adducts of C60 are supposed to be the precursors of bis-azafulleroids, but the formation mechanism is still unclear because of the incomplete isolation of the thermolized products and the lack of X-ray structures. A rigid-tethered reagent 1,2-bis(azidomethyl)benzene (1) was used to regioselectively synthesize the labile 1,2,3,4-bis(triazolino)[60]-fullerene (2), the structure of which was determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Further thermolysis of 2 produces four products (3 a-3 d), which were all characterized by X-ray crystallography. Although 3 a and 3 b have traditional bis-azafulleroid structures, as proposed previously, 3 c and 3 d show unprecedented structures with either the coexistence of [5,6]-open and [6,6]-closed patterns or an oxidized structure with an 11-membered ring on the cage. A thermolysis mechanism is proposed to clarify long-term confusion about the transformation process from bis-triazoline adducts to bis-azafulleroids of C60 .

Abstract
Endohedral and exohedral assembly of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) recently gave birth to a large body of new hybrid nanomaterials (MNPs-CNTs) featuring properties that are otherwise not in reach with only the graphitic or metallic cores themselves. These materials feature enhanced magnetically guided motions (rotation and translation), magnetic saturation and coercivity, large surface area, and thermal stability. By guiding the reader through the most significant examples in this Concept paper, we describe how researchers in the field engineered and exploited the synergistic combination of these two types of nanoparticles in a large variety of current and potential applications, such as magnetic fluid hyperthermia therapeutics and in magnetic resonance imaging to name a few.

Abstract
We have synthesized and isolated two C2-symmetric enantiomerically pure trisadducts of C60 with an inherently chiral trans-3,trans-3,trans-3 addition pattern with the aid of an enantiopure cyclo-tris-malonate tether. An unexpected stereoisomerism was observed which was attributed to the spatial arrangement of spacers in the tether.

Abstract
C60 bis-adduct containing a mixture of regio-isomers with different LUMO energy levels and steric geometries could greatly affect the morphological and bulk properties. To investigate the regio-isomer effect on solar cell performance, we have successfully designed and synthesized a regio-selective 4-acetatephenyl-4'-methylphenylmethano C60 bis-adduct (S-APM-CBA) by "tether-directed remote functionalization" strategy and a random 4-acetatephenyl-4'-methylphenylmethano C60 bis-adduct denoted as R-APM-CBA by traditional cyclopropanation. The dramatic reduction in the number of regio-isomers in S-APM-CBA is confirmed by the (1)H NMR and HPLC measurements and theoretical calculation. Compared to the R-APM-CBA-based device with a Jsc of 6.63 mA/cm(2), an FF of 44.3% and a PCE of 2.46%, the device using S-APM-CBA yielded a much lower Jsc of 1.48 mA/cm(2), an FF of 32.2%, and a PCE of 0.38%. Consistently, the electron-only device using S-AMP-CBA exhibited lower electron mobility than the R-AMP-CBA-based device. These results imply that the electronic shallow-trap effect ascribed to the LUMO energy variations turned out to be insignificant in the AMP-CBA system. The lower efficiency and mobility of S-AMP-CBA might due to the assumption that the most probable trans-4-III isomer in S-AMP-CBA prevents the intermolecular facial contact of fullerenes, thereby hindering the electron transporting. Furthermore, the nanomorphology of S-AMP-CBA and R-AMP-CBA active layers could be different because of their different three-dimensional structures. This research demonstrated that steric effect of regio-isomers in a given C60 bis-adduct is more crucial than electronic shallow-trap effect.

Abstract
A regiospecific bis-adduct of C70 with anthracene was prepared with unusually high yield (68%) by the Diels–Alder reaction in the absence of solvent (melt). The structure of the bis-adduct was an unexpected 12 o'clock isomer, as determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and spectroscopy.

Abstract
The CuCl2-mediated three-component reaction of C60 with amines and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate afforded the fulleropyrrolines in moderate yields. Furthermore, the CuCl2-mediated oxidative [2 + 1] reaction of C60 with aromatic amines bearing a strong electron-withdrawing group provided the aziridinofullerenes and the selective cis-1-bisaziridinofullerenes.

Abstract
Similar yet different: A one-step regio- and diastereoselective synthesis of three new bis(pyrrolidine)[60]fullerenes, one cis-1 and two unprecedented cis-2 diastereoisomers, is reported. The compounds are easily purified using simple chromatographic techniques, and were fully characterized by spectroscopic techniques and X-ray crystallography. A mechanism for the isomeric conversion observed is proposed.

Abstract
Polymer solar cells (PSCs) have drawn great attention in recent years for their simple device structure, light weight, and low-cost fabrication in comparison with inorganic semiconductor solar cells. However, the power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs needs to be increased for their future application. The key issue for improving the PCE of PSCs is the design and synthesis of high-efficiency conjugated polymer donors and fullerene acceptors for the photovoltaic materials. For the acceptor materials, several fullerene-bisadduct acceptors with high LUMO energy levels have demonstrated excellent photovoltaic performance in PSCs with P3HT as a donor. In this Focus Review, recent progress in high-efficiency fullerene-bisadduct acceptors is discussed, including the bisadduct of PCBM, indene-C60 bisadduct (ICBA), indene-C70 bisadduct (IC70BA), DMPCBA, NCBA, and bisTOQC. The LUMO levels and photovoltaic performance of these bisadduct acceptors with P3HT as a donor are summarized and compared. In addition, the applications of an ICBA acceptor in new device structures and with other conjugated polymer donors than P3HT are also introduced and discussed.
