Management of Grape Powdery Mildew with an Intelligent Sprayer and Sulfur

Wine grapes are an important agricultural commodity in the Pacific Northwest, where grape powdery mildew (GPM) is one of the main disease problems. The efficacy of various sulfur concentrations and output volumes from an air blast sprayer retrofitted with the Intelligent Spray System (ISS) were evaluated for the management of GPM. The ISS consists of a LiDAR sensor, Doppler speed sensor, embedded computer, flow controller, and individual pulse-width-modulation solenoid valves at each nozzle. GPM cluster severity ranged from 55 to 75% across all trials in the study when the ISS was used at its default spray rate of 62.5 ml/m³ with micronized sulfur at 6 g/liter, which was significantly higher than all other fungicide treatments but lower than nontreated controls. Similarly, leaf incidence values were highest on nontreated vines, followed by micronized sulfur at 6 g/liter applied at 62.5 ml/m³, with all other fungicide treatments being significantly lower in all trials. Using the ISS at the 62.5 ml/m³ rate and a rotation of locally systemic fungicides resulted in the lowest observed GPM leaf incidence and average cluster severity of 11% in both 2019 and 2020, the lowest cluster severity of all fungicide treatments tested. GPM control with the ISS and micronized sulfur was equivalent to a constant-rate air blast treatment at 6 g/liter when the spray rate of the ISS was increased to 125 ml/m³ or the concentration of sulfur was increased to 24 g/liter. In those cases, the amount of sulfur applied to vines was at or above the minimum label rate from bloom until the end of the season, or the entire season, respectively. This study has shown that sufficient disease control cannot always be expected when pesticides are mixed at the same rate as would be used for a constant-rate sprayer in a variable rate sprayer, especially when contact fungicides such as sulfur are used. With appropriate adjustments, the variable-rate ISS can be a useful tool to reduce pesticide quantities, water needed for mixing, and as a result labor, because fewer trips to refill for a given spray event are needed.

Effects of Three Pesticides on the Earthworm Lumbricus terrestris Gut Microbiota

Earthworms play a vital role in the terrestrial ecosystem functioning and maintenance of soil fertility. However, many pesticides, for example, imidacloprid, benomyl, and metribuzin that are world-widely used in agriculture, may be potentially dangerous to earthworms. At the same time, standard tests for pesticides acute and chronic toxicity do not reflect all aspects of their negative impact and might not be enough sensitive for effective assessment. In this paper, we studied the effects of non-lethal concentrations of imidacloprid, benomyl, and metribuzin on the gut bacterial community of Lumbricus terrestris using high-throughput sequencing approach. We found that pesticides reduced the total bacterial diversity in the earthworm's gut even at the recommended application rate. Under the applied pesticides, the structure of the gut prokaryotic community underwent changes in the relative abundance of the phyla Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria, Planctomyces, Verrucomicrobia, and Cyanobacteria, as well as the genera Haliangium, Gaiella, Paenisporosarcina, Oryzihumus, Candidatus Udaeobacter, and Aquisphaera. Moreover, the pesticides affected the abundance of Verminephrobacter-the earthworms' nephridia specific symbionts. In general, the negative impact of pesticides on bacterial biodiversity was significant even under pesticides content, which was much lower than their acute and chronic toxicity values for the earthworms. These results highlighted the fact that the earthworm's gut microbial community is highly sensitive to soil contamination with pesticides. Therefore, such examination should be considered in the pesticide risk assessment protocols.

Toxicity of fungicides to terrestrial non-target fauna - Formulated products versus active ingredients (azoxystrobin, cyproconazole, prothioconazole, tebuconazole) - A case study with Enchytraeus crypticus (Oligochaeta)

Despite the high usage of pesticides in current agricultural practices, its effects to humans and to the environment (non-target species) are a continuous concern. Soil dwelling organisms are among the first in line of exposure to pesticides, however their risks are often based on the pure active ingredient (a.i.) and not on the commercial formulated products (FPs) actually applied in the fields. In the present study, we investigated the effects of two fungicide FPs versus its a.i. (s): Amistar® XTRA and the respective a.i. (s) azoxystrobin and cyproconazole, and Prosaro® 250 EC and the respective a.i. (s) prothioconazole and tebuconazole, to the non-target soil oligochaete Enchytraeus crypticus. The standard Enchytraeid Reproduction Test was used to assess effects on survival and reproduction. Results showed that Amistar was more toxic than Prosaro, particularly for reproduction (EC₅₀ = 161 mg Amistar/kg soil, EC₅₀ = 350 mg Prosaro/kg soil). For both FPs, reproductive effects were mainly related to one of its a.i. (s) (azoxystrobin [EC₅₀ = 37 mg azosxystrobin/kg soil] for Amistar, and tebuconazole [EC₅₀ = 41 mg tebuconazole/kg soil] for Prosaro), while lethal effects were not predicted by the toxicity of its a.i. (s) (particularly in the case of Prosaro, which was more toxic than its a.i. (s)). These findings highlight the need to further explore the toxicity data of the FPs compared to the a.i. (s), aiming to predict a more realistic environmental hazard of pesticides.

Interaction of Chemical Pesticides and Their Formulation Ingredients with Microbes Associated with Plants and Plant Pests

Chemical pesticides and their formulation ingredients can have unintended effects on microbes associated with plants and plant pests. These effects can be due to direct effects on the microbes or to effects on crops or weeds that subsequently affect the microbes. In addition to fungicides, some insecticides, herbicides, and formulation compounds are toxic to plant pathogenic microbes, as well as to potentially beneficial microbes, such as those that infect insect pests. These chemicals, especially herbicides, can also indirectly affect microbes through their effects on crops and weeds. For example, glyphosate strongly impairs shikimic acid pathway-based plant defenses to microbial diseases in glyphosate-susceptible plants, significantly increasing its efficacy as an herbicide. Some herbicides induce plant defenses against plant pathogens. For a complete understanding of integrated pest management and overall cost/benefit of pesticide use, much more information is needed on microbial/pesticide interactions.
