Isoindigo-Containing Molecular Semiconductors: Effect of Backbone Extension on Molecular Organization and Organic Solar Cell Performance

Panchromatic Organoboron Molecules with Tunable Absorption Spectra

Panchromatic molecules, e. g. organic small molecules with wide absorption spectra, are very desirable for solar energy-related applications. Here, we report the development of a series of organoboron compounds composed of an organoboron core unit, two π-bridging units and two electron-withdrawing end-capping units. All seven molecules have the HOMO localized on the core unit and the LUMO delocalized on the whole conjugated backbone. They exhibit wide absorption spectra consisting of two strong absorption bands with the full width at half maximum of ca. 280 nm. These panchromatic compounds can be used as electron acceptors in organic solar cells. We elucidate the relationship between the chemical structures and opto-electronic properties of these organoboron panchromatic compounds. Increasing the electron-withdrawing capability of the core units results in a downshifted HOMO level as well as blueshifted long-wavelength absorption band with increased extinction coefficient. Extending the π-bridging units causes an increased HOMO level and blueshifted long-wavelength absorption band with increased extinction coefficients. Weakening the electron-withdrawing capability of the end-capping units leads to an upshifted LUMO level and blueshifted long-wavelength absorption peak with decreased extinction coefficient. This work provides insight into the absorption spectrum manipulation of panchromatic molecules and would pave the way for the development of solar energy-related applications.

Butterfly architecture of NIR Aza-BODIPY small molecules decorated with phenothiazine or phenoxazine

Thiadizoloquinoxaline-Based N-Heteroacenes as Active Elements for High-Density Data-Storage Device

A novel thiadiazoloquinoxaline (TQ)-based donor-acceptor (D-A)-type N-heteroacene (Py-1-TQ) has been demonstrated for promising applications in organic multilevel resistive memory devices. Compared with its counterparts (Py-0-TQ and Py-2-TQ), which show flash-type binary memory behaviors, Py-1-TQ exhibits excellent nonvolatile write-once-read-many-times-type ternary memory effects with high ON2/ON1/OFF current ratios (10^5.8:10^3.4:1), which can be attributed to the different electron-withdrawing abilities between the pyrazine unit and TQ species that can induce stepwise D-A charge-transfer processes. These results suggest that TQ-based N-heteroacenes can be potentially useful in ultrahigh-density data-storage devices through the rational D-A tuning.

Graphene nanoplatelet doping of P3HT:PCBM photoactive layer of bulk heterojunction organic solar cells for enhancing performance

Hybrid organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells based on conjugated polymer photoactive materials are promising candidates for flexible, high-performance and low-cost energy sources owing to their inexpensive materials, cost-effective processing and ease of fabrication by simple solution processes. However, the modest PV performance obtained to date-in particular the low power conversion efficiency (PCE)-has impeded the large scale deployment of OPV cells. The low PCE in OPV solar cells is mainly attributed to the low carrier mobility, which is closely correlated to the transport diffusion length of the charge carriers within the photoactive layers. The 2D graphene material could be an excellent candidate for assisting charge transport improvement in the active layer of OPV cells, due to its huge carrier mobility, thermal and chemical stability, and its compatibility with the solution process. In this work, we report on the improvement of the optoelectronic properties and photovoltaic performance of graphene nanoplatelet (GNP)-doped P3HT:PCBM photoactive blended layers, integrated into a bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic-photovoltaic-based device, using PEDOT:PSS on an ITO/glass substrate. First, the light absorption capacity was observed to increase with respect to the GNP content, while the photoluminescence showed clear quenching, indicating electron transfer between the graphene sheets and the polymeric matrix. Then, the incorporation of GNP into the BHJ active layer resulted in enhanced PV performance with respect to the reference cell, and the best PV performance was obtained with 3 wt.% of GNP loading, with an open-circuit voltage of 1.24 V, a short-circuit current density value of 6.18 mA cm^-2, a fill factor of 47.12%, and a power conversion efficiency of about 3.61%. We believe that the obtained results contribute to the development of organic photovoltaic devices and to the understanding of the impact of sp²-bonded carbon therein.

Self-Assembled Spheres, Flowers, and Fibers from the Same Backbone and Similar Side Chains

Rylene imides (RIs) self-assemble into various nanostructures. Often, the synthesis of unsymmetrical RIs (URIs) is required to achieve nanostructures. However, the synthesis of URIs is nontrivial. Thus, a structurally similar alternative is desirable. iso-Indigo (i-indigo) has a π core and lactam rings that are structurally similar to the RIs. Unsymmetrical iso-indigo (i-indigo) can be easily synthesized by condensing oxindole and isatin. We have synthesized a series of unsymmetrical i-indigo molecules. In these molecules, the π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals interactions are in operation. Because of these, the molecules self-assemble into spheres, fibers, and dahlia flower morphologies. If the hydrogen bonding interaction is disrupted, then all of them form fibers. Control experiments indicate that the complete absence of hydrogen bonding is deleterious to self-assembly. We also show that the lower analogs of i-indigo are not sufficient to form self-assembled nanostructures.

Naphthodithiophene-Based Conjugated Polymer with Linear, Planar Backbone Conformation and Strong Intermolecular Packing for Efficient Organic Solar Cells

Two donor-acceptor copolymers, PBDT and PNDT, containing 4,8-bis(2-ethylhexyloxy)benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b']dithiophene (BDT) and 4,9-bis(2-ethylhexyloxy)naphtho[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (NDT), respectively, as an electron-rich unit and 5,6-difluoro-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (2FBT) as an electron-deficient unit, were synthesized and compared. The introduction of the NDT core into the conjugated backbone was found to effectively improve both light harvesting and the charge carrier mobility by enhancing chain planarity and backbone linearity; the NDT copolymer has stronger noncovalent interactions and smaller bond angles than those of the BDT-based polymer. Moreover, the introduction of the NDT core brings about a drastic change in the molecular orientation into the face-on motif and results in polymer:PCBM blend films with well-mixed interpenetrating nanofibrillar bulk-heterojunction networks with small-scale phase separation, which produce solar cells with higher short-circuit current density and fill factor values. A conventional optimized device structure containing PNDT:PC71BM was found to exhibit a maximum solar efficiency of 6.35%, an open-circuit voltage of 0.84 V, a short-circuit current density of 11.92 mA cm(-2), and a fill factor of 63.5% with thermal annealing, which demonstrates that the NDT and DT2FBT moieties are a promising electron-donor/acceptor combination for high-performance photovoltaics.

Branched and linear A2–D–A1–D–A2isoindigo-based solution-processable small molecules for organic field-effect transistors and solar cells

A₂–D–A₁–D–A₂type small molecules were synthesized, providing a solar cell efficiency of 1.9% and hole mobility of 3.7 × 10⁻³cm²V⁻¹s⁻¹.

Photon assisted conducting atomic force microscopy study of nanostructured additives in P3HT:PCBM

P3HT:PCBM demonstrates an enhanced current with additives (Ag NPs and Gr ). Continuous conducting paths attribute the Gr additives with an order of higher magnitude than the Ag NPs. The results are consistent and were studied using photon assisted conducting microscopy.

A narrow band gap isoindigo based molecular donor for solution processed organic solar cells

Organic photovoltaics devices with 3.2% PCE were demonstrated using an isoindigo small molecule donor: fullerene acceptor active layer.
