Abstract
The enantioselective transformation of easily accessible 1,2-diketones represents a quick pathway towards enantioenriched molecules. Herein, we disclose a copper-catalyzed atroposelective formal [4+1] annulation of 1,2-diketones with vinyl cations, enabling the efficient and atom-economical construction of axially chiral arylpyrroles bearing 1,3-dioxole moieties with good to excellent enantioselectivities under mild reaction conditions. Importantly, this methodology constitutes the first enantioselective formal [4+1] annulation of 1,2-diketones.

Abstract
Novel regioselective hydrodeoxygenation of α-diketones with phosphites as the deoxygenation reagent was realized via visible-light photoredox catalysis. Broad substrate scope and high functional group compatibility were obtained. Unsymmetric α-diketones were selectively reduced at the carbonyls of higher electrophilicity. This unique regioselectivity compared with available methods makes it a practical complementary approach for the monohydrodeoxygenation of α-diketones.

Abstract
A catalyst-free one-pot three-component method of sulfoxonium ylides, nitrosoarenes, and alkynes for the synthesis of highly functionalized di-keto aziridines and alkenes is described. This strategy features the catalyst-free and additive-free approach, the employment of safe, more stable, and readily accessible sulfoxonium ylides, which bear a much wider substrate scope as starting materials. In terms of terminal alkynes, a cascade reaction of nitrone formation/1,3-diploar cycloaddition/Baldwin rearrangement is involved to afford a wide variety of di-keto aziridines. However, highly functionalized alkenes could be obtained instead of di-keto aziridines through the same nitrone formation/1,3-diploar cycloaddition and another different rearrangement reaction when internal alkynes are employed as starting materials.

Abstract
The preparation of protein-protein, protein-peptide, and protein-small molecule conjugates is important for a variety of applications, such as vaccine production, immunotherapies, preparation of antibody-drug conjugates, and targeted delivery of therapeutics. To achieve site-selective conjugation, selective chemical or enzymatic functionalization of proteins is required. We have recently reported biosynthetic pathways in which small, catalytic scaffold peptides are utilized for the generation of amino acid-derived natural products called pearlins. In these systems, peptide amino-acyl tRNA ligases (PEARLs) append amino acids to the C-terminus of a scaffold peptide, and tailoring enzymes encoded in the biosynthetic gene clusters modify the PEARL-appended amino acid to generate a variety of natural products. Herein, we investigate the substrate selectivity of one such tailoring enzyme, BhaC1, that participates in pyrroloiminoquinone biosynthesis. BhaC1 converts the indole of a C-terminal tryptophan into an o-hydroxy-p-quinone, a promising moiety for site-selective bioconjugation. Our studies demonstrate that BhaC1 requires a 20-amino acid peptide for substrate recognition. When this peptide was appended at the C-terminus of proteins, the C-terminal Trp was modified by BhaC1. The enzyme is sufficiently selective that only small changes to the sequence of the peptide are tolerated. An AlphaFold model for substrate recognition explains the selectivity of the enzyme, which may be used to install a reactive handle onto the C-terminus of proteins.

Abstract
A series of catecholato phosphonium ions, including the first stable bis(catecholato)-substituted derivatives, are isolated and fully characterized. The cations rank among the most potent literature-known Lewis acids on the Gutmann-Beckett and ion affinity scales. In contrast to halogenated or multiply charged phosphorus cations, Lewis superacidity is imparted by structural constraints, as disclosed by energy decomposition analysis. The modular access provides a tunable scaffold while maintaining extreme affinity, demonstrated by the synthesis of a chiral Lewis superacid. The combination of electrophilic phosphorus and basic oxygen substituents leverages new reactivity modes by phosphorus-ligand cooperativity. With this, a phosphorus-mediated C-H bond activation is accomplished.

Abstract
The transition-metal-catalyzed cyclopropanation of alkenes by the decomposition of diazo compounds is a powerful and straightforward strategy to produce cyclopropanes, but is tempered by the potentially explosive nature of diazo substrates. Herein we report the Mo-catalyzed regiospecific deoxygenative cyclopropanation of readily available and bench-stable 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds, in which one of the two carbonyl groups acts as a carbene equivalent upon deoxygenation and engages in the subsequent cyclopropanation process. The use of a commercially available Mo catalyst afforded an array of valuable cyclopropanes with exclusive regioselectivity in up to 90 % yield. The synthetic utility of this method was further demonstrated by gram-scale syntheses, late-stage functionalization, and the cyclopropanation of a simple monocarbonyl compound. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that phosphine (or silane) acts as both a mild reductant and a good oxygen acceptor that efficiently regenerates the catalytically active Mo catalyst through reduction of the Mo-oxo complexes.

Abstract
A 1,2-dicarbonyl moiety on a cage-opened fullerene skeleton is one of suitable building blocks for the further derivatization. Herein, we discuss the chemical transformation of a 1,2-dicarbonyl compound into β-oxo-phosphorus ylide, acid anhydride, and α-methylene carbonyl derivatives. Despite possessing a sterically small methylene unit in the last one, the release of an encapsulated water molecule was significantly supressed whereas the β-oxo-phosphorus ylide bearing three bulky p-tolyl groups on the P-atom enabled the faster insertion/release dynamics, implying the flexibility of the phosphonium substituent. The replacement of the carbonyl group with phosphorus ylide and methylene units largely varied electrochemical properties of the fullerene skeleton, likely arising from the anionic charge delocalized over the entire molecule and removal of an electron-withdrawable carbonyl group, respectively.

Abstract
An unprecedented reductive [2 + 1] annulation of α-keto esters with alkynones mediated by P(NMe2)3 is described. Although this nonmetal cyclopropenation is a nucleophilic process, attributed to the ester migration via a formal [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of Kukhtin-Ramirez adducts and alkynones followed by a fragmentation, cyclopropenes with an unbiased alkene scaffold are formed in good to excellent yields, thus providing a promising complementarity to electrophilic metal-catalyzed cyclopropenation.

Abstract
By nucleophilic addition of phosphite P(OMe)3 to a cage-opened C60 derivative, α-hydrophosphate and enol phosphate were obtained as kinetic and thermodynamic products, respectively. Different from classical Abramov products bearing a phosphorus-carbon bond, these products have a phosphorus-oxygen bond. The observed anomaly originates from the fully conjugated π system, which significantly stabilizes zwitterionic intermediates bearing a phosphorus-oxygen bond. The thus formed enol phosphate was found to exhibit an intense absorption band that extended to 730 nm, reflecting the intramolecular charge-transfer transitions. We also report domino phosphorylation reactions, which gave a cage-opened C60 derivative bearing a direct P-C bond.

Counter to the expected trigonal bipyramidal geometry, the luminescent hypervalent dithienophospholes exhibit square pyramidal geometry with inherently Lewis acidic phosphorus center that is stabilized via supramolecular π-stacking interactions in the solid state and in solution. Due to their Lewis-acid character, the compounds react with nucleophiles, suggesting their potential as mediator in organic transformations. The new species thus present an intriguing structural plaform for the design of neutral P(v) Lewis acids with useful reactivities.

Abstract
Examples of chelating ligands that incorporate P-O donors are seldom encountered. Herein, a series of novel bridging diphosphate ligand supported bimetallic Zr(iv), V(iii) and Ni(ii) complexes have been derived from reactions of the oxyphosphorane (C6Cl4O2)P(OEt)3 with the corresponding metal halides. The mechanism is probed and shown to involve elimination of ethyl halide, and ring opening affording the chelating phosphate-catecholate ligands.

Abstract
A growing number of organopnictogen redox catalytic methods have emerged-especially within the past 10 years-that leverage the plentiful reversible two-electron redox chemistry within Group 15. The goal of this Perspective is to provide readers the context to understand the dramatic developments in organopnictogen catalysis over the past decade with an eye toward future development. An exposition of the fundamental differences in the atomic structure and bonding of the pnictogens, and thus the molecular electronic structure of organopnictogen compounds, is presented to establish the backdrop against which organopnictogen redox reactivity-and ultimately catalysis-is framed. A deep appreciation of these underlying periodic principles informs an understanding of the differing modes of organopnictogen redox catalysis and evokes the key challenges to the field moving forward. We close by addressing forward-looking directions likely to animate this area in the years to come. What new catalytic manifolds can be developed through creative catalyst and reaction design that take advantage of the intrinsic redox reactivity of the pnictogens to drive new discoveries in catalysis?

Abstract
Oxidative coupling (OC) through o-quinone intermediates has been established as an efficient and site-selective way to modify protein N-termini and the unnatural amino acid p-aminophenylalanine (paF). Recently, we reported that the tyrosinase-mediated oxidation of phenol-tagged cargo molecules is a particularly convenient method of generating o-quinones in situ. The coupling partners can be easily prepared and stored, the reaction takes place under mild conditions (phosphate buffer, pH 6.5, 4 to 23 °C), and dissolved oxygen is the only oxidant required. Here, we show an important extension of this chemistry for the activation of tyrosine residues that project into solution from the N or C-termini of peptide and protein substrates. Generating the o-quinone electrophiles from tyrosine allows greater flexibility in choosing the nucleophilic coupling partner and expands the scope of the reaction to include C-terminal positions. We also introduce a new bacterial tyrosinase enzyme that shows improved activation for some tyrosine substrates. The efficacy of several secondary amines and aniline derivatives was evaluated in the coupling reactions, providing important information for coupling partner design. This strategy was used to modify the C-termini of an antibody scFv construct and of Protein L, a human IgG kappa light chain binding protein. The use of the modified proteins as immunolabeling agents was also demonstrated.

Abstract
The reaction of (E)-(2-oxo-1,2-dihydroindol-3-ylidene)acetic acid esters (1) with methyl ethyl ketone in the presence of morpholine as a catalyst gave 4-oxo-2-(2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indole-3-yl)hexanoic acid esters, a diastereomeric mixture of two isomers (2A and 2B). Using aluminium oxide as a catalyst for the above reaction led to the formation of 4-oxo-3-methyl-2-(2-oxo-2,3-dihydro–1H-indole-3-yl)-pentanoic acid esters as a mixture of three isomers 3A, 3B and 3C, which upon methylation with methyl iodide in acetone and in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate yield the corresponding methylated products. The structural assignments of the new compounds are based on their chemical and spectroscopic properties. The stereochemical structures of 5aA, 5bB and 5aC are identified by X-ray analysis.

Abstract
Herein, we report a chemoselective P(NMe2)3-mediated reductive epoxidation of α-dicarbonyl compounds such as isatins, α-keto esters, and α-diketones with aldehydes and ketones, leading to an efficient synthesis of a wide range of highly functionalized unsymmetrical epoxides in moderate to excellent yields and diastereoselectivities. The Kukhtin-Ramirez adduct, which is exclusively generated in situ from an α-dicarbonyl compound and P(NMe2)3, plays a key role in governing the chemoselectivity. It represents the first practical synthesis of unsymmetrical epoxides via direct reductive epoxidation of two different carbonyl electrophiles and also complements the existing methods of generating epoxides.

Abstract
A dimethyl phosphite-mediated addition of α-keto N-tert-butanesulfinyl imidates to nitrosoarenes was developed. Nitrosoarenes were successfully used as electrophiles to trap aza-enolate intermediates that were generated from nucleophilic addition of deprotonated phosphite to α-keto N-tert-butanesulfinyl imidates and following phospha-Brook rearrangement, allowing efficient construction of ketonitrones with excellent (Z)-geometries.

Abstract
Reaction of 3,6-disubstituted-1,2,4,5-tetrazines with water and PEt3 forms the corresponding 1,4-dihydrotetrazine and OPEt3 . Thus PEt3 , as a stoichiometric reductant, reduces water, and the resulting two reducing equivalents serve to doubly hydrogenate the tetrazine. A variety of possible initial interactions between electron-deficient tetrazine and electron-rich PR3 , including a charge transfer complex, were evaluated by density functional calculations which revealed that the energy of all these make them spectroscopically undetectable at equilibrium, but one of these is nevertheless suggested as the intermediate in the observed redox reaction. The relationship of this to the Mitsunobu reaction, which absorbs the components of water evolved in the conversion of alcohol and carboxylic acid to ester, with desirable inversion at the alcohol carbon, is discussed. This enables a modified Mitsunobu reaction, with tetrazine replacing EtO2 CN=NCO2 Et (DEAD), which has the advantage that dihydrotetrazine can be recycled to tetrazine by oxidation with O2 , something impossible with the hydrogenated DEAD. For this tetrazine version, a betaine-like intermediate is undetectable, but its protonated form is characterized, including by X-ray structure and NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract
A commercial phosphorus-based reagent (P(NMe2)3) mediates umpolung alkylation of methyl aroylformates with benzylic and allylic bromides, leading to either Barbier-type addition or ylide-free olefination products upon workup. The reaction sequence is initiated by a two-electron redox addition of the tricoordinate phosphorus reagent with an α-keto ester compound (Kukhtin-Ramirez addition). A mechanistic rationale is offered for the chemoselectivity upon which the success of this nonmetal mediated C-C bond forming strategy is based.

Abstract
The base-mediated formation of a bridgehead double bond in a bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane system (anit-Bredt molecules) is described. The synthesis of exocyclic norbornyl enones by Wittig reaction of α-diketones is reported. These enones and their Michael adducts are used as substrates for the generation of transient bridgehead enones and their trapping with MeOH and H2 O. Bridgehead alcohols are easily synthesized from norbornyl enones and are exploited for the diversity oriented synthesis of frameworks of natural and unnatural products.
