Abstract
Increasing concerns have been raised about dangerous, yet nearly undetectable levels of nitrosamines in foods, medications, and drinking water. Their ubiquitous presence and carcinogenicity necessitates a method of sensitive and selective detection of these potent toxins. While the detection of two major nitrosamines─N-nitrosodimethylamine and N-nitrosodiethylamine─has seen success, low detection limits are scarcer for the other members of this class. One member, N-nitrosodiphenylamine (NDPhA), has had little progress not only in its detection in low quantities but also in its detection at all. NDPhA has unique difficulty in its identification due to its aromaticity, making it far more problematic to distinguish in the common GC-MS or LC-MS/MS methods used for nitrosamine sensing. Despite this detection barrier, it has been listed among the top 6 carcinogenic nitrosamines by the Food and Drug Administration as of 2023. Due to its evasive nature, a unique methodology must be applied to facilitate its sensitive identification. Herein, we describe the use of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for the first account of liquid-phase detection of NDPhA using cysteamine-functionalized gold nanostars and a portable Raman spectrometer. Our methodology requires no chemical modification to the nitrosated structure as well as the usage of two well-understood biocompatible materials: cysteamine and gold nanoparticles.

Abstract
Comparative reactivity of a series of new Zn(II) and Fe(II) compounds, [(Py2ald)M(ER)] (E = S, R = Ph: M = Zn, 1aZn; M = Fe, 1aFe; E = S, R = 2,6-Me2-C6H3: M = Zn, 1bZn; M = Fe, 1bFe; E = Se, R = Ph: M = Zn, 2Zn; M = Fe, 2Fe), and [(Py2ald)M]22+ (M = Zn, 5Zn; M = Fe, 5Fe) is presented. Compound 1aZn could react with nitrite (NO2-) to produce [(Py2ald)Zn(ONO)] (3Zn), which, upon treatment with thiols and PhSeH (proton source), could regenerate either 1aZn/5Zn and 2Zn respectively, along with the production of nitric oxide (NO) where the yield of NO increases in the order tBuSH ≪ PhCH2SH < PhSH < PhSeH. In contrast to this, 1aFe, 2Fe and 5Fe could affect the direct reduction of NO2- in the absence of protons to generate NO and [{(Py2ald)(ONO)Fe}2-μ2-O] (8Fe). Moreover, 8Fe could regenerate 5Fe and 1aFe/2Fe upon treatment with 4 and 6 equiv. of PhEH (E = S/Se), respectively, along with the generation of NO. Finally, a comparative study of the mononuclear Zn(II) and Fe(II) compounds for the transfer of the coordinated thiolate/selenolate and the generation and transfer of reactive sulfur/selenium species (RES-, E = Se, S) to a series of organic substrates has been provided.

Abstract
Photoresponsive nitric oxide (NO)-releasing materials (NORMs) enable the spatiotemporal delivery of NO to facilitate their potential applications in physiological conditions. Here two novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based photoactive NORMs achieved by the incorporation of prefunctionalized NO donors into the photosensitive Fe-MOFs via a postmodification strategy is reported. The modified Fe-MOFs display superior photoactivity of NO release when exposed to visible light (up to 720 nm). Significantly, the visible-light-driven NO release properties are further corroborated by their efficient antibacterial performance.

Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) is a ubiquitous messenger molecule playing a key role in various physiological and pathological processes. However, producing a selective turn-on fluorescence response to NO is a challenging task due to (a) the very short half-life of NO (typically in the range of 0.1-10 s) in the biological milieu and (b) false positive responses to reactive carbonyl species (RCS) (e.g., dehydroascorbic acid and methylglyoxal etc.) and some other reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS/RNS), especially with o-phenylenediamine (OPD) based fluorosensors. To avoid these limitations, NO sensors should be designed in such a way that they react spontaneously with NO to give turn-on response within the time frame of t1/2 (typically in the range of 0.1-10 s) of NO and λem in the visible wavelength along with good cell permeability to achieve biocompatibility. With these views in mind, a N-nitrosation based fluorescent sensor, NDAQ, has been developed that is highly selective to NO with ∼27-fold fluorescence enhancement at λem = 542 nm with high sensitivity (LOD = 7 ± 0.4 nM) and shorter response time, eliminating the interference of other reactive species (RCS/ROS/RNS). Furthermore, all the photophysical studies with NDAQ have been performed in 98% aqueous medium at physiological pH, indicating its good stability under physiological conditions. The kinetic assay illustrates the second-order dependency with respect to NO concentration and first-order dependency with respect to NDAQ concentration. The biological studies reveal the successful application of the probe to track both endogenous and exogenous NO in living organisms.

Abstract
Nitroorganics present a general concern for a safe environment due to their health hazards. However, some nitroorganics such as metronidazole (Mtz) and chloramphenicol (CAM) also possess medicinal value. Mtz and CAM can undergo reductive bioactivation presumably via their nitroso derivatives. We show, using UV-vis spectroscopy, that sperm whale myoglobin (swMb) and its distal pocket mutants retaining H-bonding capacity react with Mtz in the presence of dithionite to generate products with spectra suggestive of the Fe-bound nitroso (Fe-RNO; λmax ~420 nm) forms. We have crystallized and solved the X-ray crystal structure of an H64Q swMb-acetamide compound to 1.76 Å resolution; formation of this compound results from the serendipitous crystallographic trapping, by the heme center, of acetamide from the reductive decomposition of Mtz. Only one of the swMb proteins, namely H64Q swMb with a relatively flexible Gln64 residue, reacted with CAM presumably due to the bulky nature of CAM that generally may restrict its access to the heme site.

Abstract
Organic radical batteries (ORBs) with radical-branched polymers as cathode materials represent a valuable alternative to meet the continuously increasing demand on energy storage. However, the low theoretical capacities of current radical-contained compounds strongly hamper their practical applications. To address this issue, a chemically robust polynitrosoarene (tris(4-nitrosophenyl)amine) with a pronounced radical property is rationally designed as an efficient cathode for ORBs. Its unique multi-nitroso structure displays remarkably reversible charge/discharge capability and a superior capacity up to 300 mA h g-1 (93% theoretical capacity) after 100 cycles at 100 mA g-1 within a broad potential window of 1.3-4.3 V (vs Li+/Li). Moreover, the ultra-long cycle life is also achieved at 1000 mA g-1 with 85% preservation of the capacity after 1000 cycles, making it the best-reported organic radical cathode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract
N-nitrosamines are widespread cancerogenic compounds in human environment, including water, tobacco products, food, and medicinal products. Their presence in pharmaceuticals has recently led to several recalls of important medicines from the market, and strict controls and tight limits of N-nitrosamines are now required. Analytical determination of N-nitrosamines is expensive, laborious, and time-inefficient making development of simpler and faster techniques for their detection crucial. Several reports published in the previous decade have demonstrated that cobalt porphyrin-based chemosensors selectively bind N-nitrosamines, which produces a red shift of characteristic Soret band in UV-Vis spectra. In this study, a thorough re-evaluation of metalloporphyrin/N-nitrosamine adducts was performed using various characterization methods. Herein, we demonstrate that while N-nitrosamines can interact directly with cobalt-based porphyrin complexes, the red shift in UV-Vis spectra is not selectively assured and might also result from the interaction between impurities in N-nitrosamines and porphyrin skeleton or interaction of other functional groups within the N-nitrosamine structure and the metal ion within the porphyrin. We show that pyridine nitrogen is the interacting atom in tobacco-specific N-nitrosamines (TSNAs), as pyridine itself is an active ligand and not the N-nitrosamine moiety. When using Co(II) porphyrins as chemosensors, acidic and basic impurities in dialkyl N-nitrosamines (e.g., formic acid, dimethylamine) are also UV-Vis spectra red shift-producing species. Treatment of these N-nitrosamines with K2CO3 prevents the observed UV-Vis phenomena. These results imply that cobalt-based metalloporphyrins cannot be considered as selective chemosensors for UV-Vis detection of N-nitrosamine moiety-containing species. Therefore, special caution in interpretation of UV-Vis red shift for chemical sensors is suggested.

Abstract
N-Nitrosamines are found in food, drugs, air, water, and soil. They pose a significant risk to human health because of their carcinogenicity; consequently, materials that can be used to selectively and sensitively detect nitrosamines are needed. In this work, we designed and synthesized two polymers bearing calix[4]arene or 4-tert-butylcalix[4]arene tungsten-imido complexes (PCalixH and PCalixtBu) as N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) receptors. The interaction between metallocalix[4]arene monomers/polymers and NDMA was confirmed by 1H NMR and IR spectroscopy. Single-crystal X-ray analysis further revealed that the host-guest interaction is based on binding of the terminal oxygen of NDMA to tungsten within the calixarene cavity. Gravimetric detection of NDMA was performed on a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) in air. Both polymers show responses to NDMA, with PCalixtBu exhibiting a low theoretical limit of detection of 5 ppb for NDMA. The sensor also shows high selectivity toward NDMA and moderate humidity tolerance. This work provides a sensitive sensor for detection of NDMA and also offers a class of new, selective, and efficient NDMA receptors for the future design of NDMA sensors and NDMA extraction materials.

Abstract
The activation of nitrosobenzene promoted by transition-metal complexes has gained considerable interest due to its significance for understanding biological processes and catalytic C-N bond formation processes. Despite intensive studies in the past decades, there are only limited cases where electron-rich metal centers were commonly employed to achieve the N-O or C-N bond cleavage of the coordinated nitrosobenzene. In this regard, it is significant and challenging to construct a suitable functional system for examining its unique reactivity toward reductive activation of nitrosoarene. Herein, we present a {Fe2S2} functional platform that can activate nitrosobenzene via an unprecedented iron-directed thiolate insertion into the N-O bond to selectively generate a well-defined diiron benzenesulfinamide complex. Furthermore, computational studies support a proposal that in this concerted four-electron reduction process of nitrosobenzene the iron center serves as an important electron shuttle. Notably, compared to the intact bridging nitrosoarene ligand, the benzenesulfinamide moiety has priority to convert into aniline in the presence of separate or combined protons and reductants, which may imply the formation of the sulfinamide species accelerates reduction process of nitrosoarene. The reaction pattern presented here represents a novel activation mode of nitrosobenzene realized by a thiolate-bridged diiron complex.

Abstract
The development and study of a simple copper-catalyzed reaction of nitroarenes with aryl boronic acids to form diarylamines that uses phenyl silane as the stoichiometric terminal reductant is described. This cross-coupling reaction requires as little as 2 mol % of CuX and 4 mol% of diphosphine for success and tolerates a broad range of functional groups on either the nitroarene or the aryl boronic acid with to afford the amine in good yield. Mechanistic investigations established that the cross-coupling reaction proceeds via a nitrosoarene intermediate and that copper is required to catalyze both the deoxygenation of the nitroarene to afford the nitrosoarene and C-NAr bond formation of the nitrosoarene with the aryl boronic acid.

Abstract
Primary hydroxylamines, RNHOH, decompose readily in the presence of transition metal ions. We show that this reactivity can be arrested by ligand design via an intramolecular hydrogen bond. Six metal complexes with an intact NHOH group were synthesized and crystallographically characterized. The Cu-hydroxylamine complexes can catalyze the aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols.

Abstract
Nitrosoarenes (ArNOs) are toxic metabolic intermediates that bind to heme proteins to inhibit their functions. Although much of their biological functions involve coordination to the Fe centers of hemes, the factors that determine N-binding or O-binding of these ArNOs have not been determined. We utilize X-ray crystallography and density functional theory (DFT) analyses of new representative ferrous and ferric ArNO compounds to provide the first theoretical insight into preferential N-binding versus O-binding of ArNOs to hemes. Our X-ray structural results favored N-binding of ArNO to ferrous heme centers, and O-binding to ferric hemes. Results of the DFT calculations rationalize this preferential binding on the basis of the energies of associated spin-states, and reveal that the dominant stabilization forces in the observed ferrous N-coordination and ferric O-coordination are dπ-pπ* and dσ-pπ*, respectively. Our results provide, for the first time, an explanation why in situ oxidation of the ferrous-ArNO compound to its ferric state results in the observed subsequent dissociation of the ligand.

Abstract
N-Nitrosamines are a class of compounds notorious both for the potent carcinogenicity of many of its members and for their widespread occurrence throughout the human environment, from air and water to our diets and drugs. Considerable effort has been dedicated to understanding N-nitrosamines as contaminants, and methods for their prevention, remediation, and detection are ongoing challenges. Understanding the chemistry of N-nitrosamines will be key to addressing these challenges. To facilitate such understanding, we focus in this Perspective on the structure, reactivity, and synthetic applications of N-nitrosamines with an emphasis on alkyl N-nitrosamines. The role of N-nitrosamines as water contaminants and the methods for their detection are also discussed.

Abstract
Redox noninnocent ligands enhance the reactivity of the metal they complex, a strategy used by metalloenzymes and in catalysis. Herein, we report a series of copper complexes with the same ligand framework, but with a pendant nitrogen group that spans five different redox states between nitro and amine. Of particular interest is the synthesis of a unprecedented copper(I)-arylhydroxylamine complex. While hydroxylamines typically disproportionate or decompose in the presence of transition metal ions, the reactivity of this metastable species is arrested by the presence of an intramolecular hydrogen bond. Two-electron oxidation yields a copper(II)-(arylnitrosyl radical) complex that can dissociate to a copper(I) species with uncoordinated arylnitroso. This combination of ligand redox noninnocence and hemilability provides opportunities in catalysis for two-electron chemistry via a one-electron copper(I/II) shuttle, as exemplified with an aerobic alcohol oxidation.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) activates and deoxygenates nitrosoarene (ArNO) to afford arylnitrene (ArN), thereby portraying a fundamental route connecting two 6e- species. A combination of spectroscopic and computational studies suggests that the interaction of ArNO with NHC affords a transient 2,2'-diamino imine-N-oxide as a key intermediate in ArNO deoxygenation.

Abstract
The use of functional groups as internal ligands for assisting C-H functionalization, termed the chelation assisted strategy, is emerging as one of the most powerful tools for construction of C-C and C-X bonds from inert C-H bonds. However, there are various directing groups which cannot be either removed after functionalization or require some additional steps or reagents for their removal, thereby limiting the scope of structural diversity of the products, and the step and atom economy of the system. These limitations are overcome by the use of the traceless directing group (TDG) strategy wherein functionalization of the substrate and removal of the directing group can be carried out in a one pot fashion. Traceless directing groups serve as the most ideal chelation assisted strategy with a high degree of reactivity and selectivity without any requirement for additional steps for their removal. The present review overviews the use of various functional groups such as carboxylic acids, aldehydes, N-oxides, nitrones, N-nitroso amines, amides, sulfoxonium ylides and silicon tethered directing groups for assisting transition metal catalyzed C-H functionalization reactions in the last decade.

Abstract
A series of copper/nitrosoarene complexes was created that mimics several steps in biomimetic O2 activation by copper(I). The reaction of the copper(I) complex of N,N,N',N'-tetramethypropylenediamine with a series of para-substituted nitrosobenzene derivatives leads to adducts in which the nitrosoarene (ArNO) is reduced by zero, one, or two electrons, akin to the isovalent species dioxygen, superoxide, and peroxide, respectively. The geometric and electronic structures of these adducts were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, vibrational analysis, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, NMR, electrochemistry, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The bonding mode of the NO moiety depends on the oxidation state of the ArNO moiety: κN for ArNO, mononuclear η2-NO and dinuclear μ-η2:η1 for ArNO•-, and dinuclear μ-η2:η2 for ArNO2-. 15N isotopic labeling confirms the reduction state by measuring the NO stretching frequency (1392 cm-1 for κN-ArNO, 1226 cm-1 for η2-ArNO•-, 1133 cm-1 for dinuclear μ-η2:η1-ArNO•-, and 875 cm-1 for dinuclear μ-η2:η2 for ArNO2-). The 15N NMR signal disappears for the ArNO•- species, establishing a unique diagnostic for the radical state. Electrochemical studies indicate reduction waves that are consistent with one-electron reduction of the adducts and are compared with studies performed on Cu-O2 analogues. DFT calculations were undertaken to confirm our experimental findings, notably to establish the nature of the charge-transfer transitions responsible for the intense green color of the complexes. In fine, this family of complexes is unique in that it walks through three redox states of the ArNO moiety while keeping the metal and its supporting ligand the same. This work provides snapshots of the reactivity of the toxic nitrosoarene molecules with the biologically relevant Cu(I) ion.

Abstract
An enantioselective primary amine-catalyzed total N-selective nitroso aldol reaction (N-NA) was achieved through the oxidation of primary aromatic amines to the corresponding nitrosoarenes catalyzed by selenium reagents and 30% H2O2. This protocol provides a facile and highly efficient access to α-hydroxyamino carbonyls bearing chiral quaternary centers under exceedingly mild and green reaction conditions with high chemo- and enantiocontrol.

Abstract
The reactions of nitrosoarenes with transition-metal species are fundamentally important for their relevance to metal-catalyzed transformations of organo-nitrogen compounds in organic synthesis and also the metabolization of nitroarenes and anilines in biology. In addition to the well-known reactivity of metal-mediated N-O bond activation and cleavage of nitrosoarenes, we present herein the first observation of a nitrosoarene C-N bond oxidative addition reaction upon the interaction of a three-coordinate cobalt(0) species [(IPr)Co(vtms)2] with 2,4,6-tri( tert-butyl)-1-nitroso-benzene (Ar*NO). The reaction produces a cobalt nitrosyl aryl complex, [(IPr)Co(Ar*)(NO)] (1), with a bis(nitrosoarene)cobalt complex, [(IPr)Co(η2-ONAr)(κ1- O-ONAr)] (2), as an intermediate. Spectroscopic characterizations, DFT calculations, and kinetic studies revealed that the redox non-innocence of nitrosoarene induces a stepwise pathway for the C-N bond oxidative addition reaction.

Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) exerts multiple functions in many life processes and was of great significance in a variety of biomedical scenarios. However, the mismatches between releasing locations and NO active sites seriously limited the available NO at areas of interest and greatly dampen the overall efficiency of delivery systems. Therefore, in the present study, a NO donor was developed to achieve intracellular delivery and release of NO to overcome the aforementioned challenges. Enhanced uptake and effective intracellular release of NO were realized via β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) mediated endocytosis and high level glutathione (GSH) inside cells, respectively. We demonstrated that intracellularly delivered NO would exert stronger bioeffects than premature release of NO outside targeted cells. Besides, β-CD assisted cellular uptake proved indispensable in maximizing the influence of NO in modulating cellular behavior. These results demonstrated the significance of intracellular delivery and release of NO in improving its bioutilization. The carrier could efficiently inhibit proliferation of SMCs, while promoting the growth of ECs. Such cell-type-differed physiological effects were advantageous in re-endothelialization and might hold great potential in cardiovascular applications.

Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) is used as a substrate analogue/spectroscopic probe of metal sites that bind and activate oxygen and its derivatives. To assess the interaction of superoxide with the Ni center in Ni-containing superoxide dismutase (NiSOD), we studied the reaction of NO+ and NO with the model complex, Et4N[Ni(nmp)(SPh-o-NH2-p-CF3)] (1; nmp2- = dianion of N-(2-mercaptoethyl)picolinamide; -SPh-o-NH2-p-CF3 = 2-amino-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzenethiolate) and its oxidized analogue 1ox , respectively. The ultimate products of these reactions are the disulfide of -SPh-o-NH2-p-CF3 and the S,S-bridged tetrameric complex [Ni4(nmp)4], a result of S-based redox activity. However, introduction of NO to 1 affords the green dimeric {NiNO}10 complex (Et4N)2[{Ni(κ2-SPh-o-NNO-p-CF3)(NO)}2] (2) via NO-induced loss of nmp2- as the disulfide and N-nitrosation of the aromatic thiolate. Complex 2 was characterized by X-ray crystallography and several spectroscopies. These measurements are in-line with other tetrahedral complexes in the {NiNO}10 classification. In contrast to the established stability of this metal-nitrosyl class, the Ni-NO bond of 2 is labile and release of NO from this unit was quantified by trapping the NO with a CoII-porphyrin (70-80% yield). In the process, the Ni ends up coordinated by two o-nitrosaminobenzenethiolato ligands to result in the structurally characterized trans-(Et4N)2[Ni(SPh-o-NNO-p-CF3)2] (3), likely by a disproportionation mechanism. The isolation and characterization of 2 and 3 suggest that: (i) the strongly donating thiolates dominate the electronic structure of Ni-nitrosyls that result in less covalent Ni-NO bonds, and (ii) superoxide undergoes disproportionation via an outer-sphere mechanism in NiSOD as complexes in the {NiNO}9/8 state have yet to be isolated.

Abstract
S-nitrosocaptopril (CapNO) possesses dual capacities of both Captopril and an NO donor with enhanced efficacy and reduced side effects. CapNO crystals are difficult to make due to its unstable S-NO bond. Here, we report a novel stable S-nitrosocaptopril monohydrate (CapNO·H2O) that is stabilized by intermolecular five-membered structure, where one H of H2O forms a hydrogen bond with O- of the stable resonance zwitterion Cap-S+=N-O-, and the O in H2O forms the dipole-dipole interaction with S+ through two unpaired electrons. With the chelation and common ion effect, we synthesized and characterized CapNO·H2O that is stable at 4 °C for 180 days and thereafter without significant degradation. Compared to Captopril, CapNO showed direct vasorelaxation and beneficial effect on PAH rats, and could be self-assembled in rat stomach when Captopril and NaNO2 were given separately. This novel CapNO·H2O with low entropy paves an avenue for its clinical trials and commercialization.

Abstract
Removal of chloride from CoCl2 with TlPF6 in acetonitrile, followed by addition of excess nitrosobenzene, yielded the eight-coordinate cobalt(II) complex salt [Co{Ph(O)NN(O)Ph}4](PF6)2, shown by single-crystal X-ray analysis to have a distorted tetragonal geometry. The analogous treatment of the bipyridyl complex Co(bpy)Cl2 yielded the mixed-ligand cobalt(II) complex salt [Co(bpy){Ph(O)NN(O)Ph}2](PF6)2, whose single-crystal X-ray structure displays a trigonal prismatic geometry, similar to that of the iron(II) cation in the previously known complex salt [Fe{Ph(O)NN(O)Ph}3](FeCl4)2. The use of TlPF6 to generate solvated metal complex cations from chloride salts or chlorido complexes, followed by the addition of nitrosobenzene, is shown to be a useful synthetic strategy for the preparation of azodioxide complex cations with the noncoordinating, diamagnetic PF6 - counteranion. Coordination number appears to be more important than d electron count in determining the geometry and metal-ligand bond distances of diphenylazodioxide complexes.

Abstract
The highly enantioselective totally N-selective hydroxyamination reaction of α-aryl-α-cyanoacetates with 2-nitrosopyridines was realized by using a chiral N,N'-dioxide/Mg(OTf)2 complex as catalyst, which enriches the nitroso chemistry. A variety of 2-cyano-2-[hydroxyl(pyrydin-2-yl)amino]acetates with quaternary stereocenters and potential antibacterial activities were obtained in excellent yields with good to excellent ee values under as low as 0.05 mol % catalyst loading. The products could be easily transformed to useful α-amino amides and 1,2-diamines. Besides, a possible transition state model was proposed to elucidate the origin of the chirality induction.

Abstract
Well-defined diazotates are scarce. Here we report the synthesis of unprecedented homoleptic palladium(II) diazotate complexes. The palladium(II)-mediated nitrosylation of 2-aminopyridines with NaNO2 results in the formation of metal-stabilized diazotates, which were found to be cytotoxic to human ovarian cancer cells.
