Abstract
Herein, we report the enantioselective phosphine-catalyzed β,γ-annulation of electron-poor allenes with bifunctional malonates. The reaction exploits a 2C phosphonium synthon that when accessed using (R)-SITCP gives 23 cyclopentanes with high stereoselectivity (most >95:5 er and >9:1 dr) and yield. In addition to the (3+2) annulation, a one-pot three-component variant to give the same cyclopentanes and a (3+2) annulation/Dieckmann cyclization cascade, along with mechanistic studies, are reported.

Abstract
Organocatalytic asymmetric desymmetrization of prochiral cyclohexane-1,3-diones has been demonstrated through the merging of iminium and enamine activation. The tandem annulation reaction proceeds through a sequential oxa-Michael addition/intramolecular aldol reaction/[1,3]-amino oxetane rearrangement pathway. Mechanistic study using an 18O-water experiment suggests oxetane rearrangement instead of direct dehydration. The formation of other competing Rauhut-Currier products via alkoxy-elimination was not observed.

Abstract
A highly diastereo- and enantioselective phosphinative cyclization of ketone-enamides with secondary diarylphosphines enabled by copper catalysis is reported, providing a range of chiral tertiary cyclohexylphosphines bearing three contiguous stereogenic centers in high yields. This asymmetric phosphination-aldol cyclization protocol can also be extended to desymmetrization of dione-enamides to create four contiguous stereogenic centers in a highly selective manner.

Abstract
A novel aza-Piancatelli rearrangement triggered cascade reaction has been developed by utilizing methyl furylacrylates as a new type of functionalized furanoxonium ion precursor, permitting rapid and flexible construction of diverse cyclopenta[b]pyrrolidinone derivatives. The unprecedented and highly efficient bicyclic γ-lactam product formation is originated from an unusual retro-aza-Piancatelli rearrangement of the major cis-fused multifunctionalized cyclopentenone to the minor trans-fused one followed by a lactamization reaction.

Abstract
An efficient rhodium-catalyzed protocol for the synthesis of cyclopentenones based on a three-component reaction of acrylic acids, formaldehyde, and malonates via vinylic C-H activation is reported. Exploratory studies showed that 5-alkylation of as-prepared cyclopentenones could be realized smoothly by the treatment of a variety of alkyl halides with a Na2CO3/MeOH solution. Excess formaldehyde and malonate led to a multicomponent reaction that afforded the multisubstituted cyclopentenones through a Michael addition.

Abstract
An efficient and convenient synthesis of 2,4-disubstituted cyclopentenones has been achieved through a Au(III)-catalyzed isomerization-A3-coupling/cyclization cascade. A possible mechanism involving an initial Au(III)-catalyzed isomerization, A3-type coupling, and cyclization via an enol intermediate is postulated.

Abstract
Substituted and stereochemically dense carbacycles can be prepared by sequential dipolar cycloaddition and reductive cleavage from enals and hydroxylamines. The reaction sequence proceeds with high efficiency for a wide variety of enals and hydroxylamines. The reaction is regio- and diastereoselective for the initial formation of a bridged bisisoxazolidine intermediate, which then undergoes quantitative double N-O cleavage to produce carbacycles as single diastereomers.

Abstract
A novel transformation from rhamnose-type C-glycosides to 2-cyclopentenones is described. With the promotion of fluoroboric acid, C-glycosides underwent ring opening and subsequent Nazarov cyclization to afford 2-cyclopentenones in good to excellent yields. The solvent and the concentration of acid are crucial to the yield of this transformation.

Abstract
Substituted α-alkylidene cyclopentenones are formed in up to 93% yield by the intramolecular capture of vinyl cations with pendent alkenes. An increased level of substitution at the β-position of the β-hydroxy-α-diazoketone starting material changed the course of the reaction to instead give a lactone product. A reaction path that involves bond reorganization via an acylium ion intermediate is proposed to explain these results. Substrate scope studies showed that more stable vinyl cations gave higher α-alkylidene cyclopentenone yields. This study provides a mild and efficient method to form α-alkylidene cyclopentenones that complements C-H insertion and Nazarov cyclization strategies.

Abstract
A formal [4+1]-annulation strategy between sulfur ylides and 1,3-dienes was developed to afford functionalized cyclopentanoids. The process consists of a stereoselective cyclopropanation reaction followed, in situ, by a stereospecific MgI2 -catalyzed vinylcyclopropane-cyclopentene rearrangement. The use of chiral sulfur ylides provided cyclopentanoids with excellent enantiocontrol. A combined experimental and computational mechanistic study showed that the stereospecificity of the rearrangement could be accounted for by a double SN 2 reaction mechanism involving iodide.

Abstract
The imino-Nazarov cyclization of the polysubstituted pentan-1,4-diene-3-imines was realized. To this aim, a one-pot procedure involving reductive alkenyliminylation of α,β-unsaturated secondary amides with potassium organotrifluoroborates, followed by acid-catalyzed imino-Nazarov cyclization of the polysubstituted pentan-1,4-diene-3-imine intermediates, was studied systematically. This mild, operationally simple, flexible, and high-yielding protocol efficiently affords polysubstituted pentan-1,4-diene-3-imines, cyclopentenimines, and α-amino cyclopentenones, which are useful scaffolds in organic synthesis. The substituent effect at the C2 position of the polysubstituted pentan-1,4-diene-3-imines was studied by means of density-functional theory calculations. Results suggested that the electron-donating group facilitates the imino-Nazarov cyclization process.

Abstract
We report a Lewis acid catalyzed reaction sequence involving a 1,2-shift and subsequent C-H insertion that gives monocyclic and fused bicyclic cyclopentenone products. This reaction sequence, which is initiated by treating β-hydroxy-α-diazo ketones with a Lewis acid, proceeds through vinyl cation intermediates that insert at non-activated gamma C-H bonds. This reaction represents an alternative strategy to exploit the diazo functional group in an intramolecular C-H insertion, and can provide products not accessible by transition metal catalyzed C-H insertions. This remote C-H activation process provides good yields of bicyclic cyclopentenone products that contain 7- and 8-membered rings, and monocyclic prostaglandin analogs.

Abstract
We describe an unusual net [2+2] cycloaddition reaction between boron alkylidenes and unactivated alkenes. This reaction provides a new method for the construction of carbocyclic ring systems bearing versatile organoboronic esters. Aside from surveying the scope of this reaction, we provide details about the mechanistic underpinnings of this process, and examine its application to the synthesis of the natural product aphanamal.

Abstract
The cyclopentane core framework 23 of pactamycin (1) was synthesized in 14 steps from symmetric cyclohexadiene 11. Our synthetic strategy features Rh-mediated catalytic desymmetrization of 10 via aziridination and then regioselective ring-opening reaction of sulfonylaziridine 9 with NaN3, ring-contraction of cyclohexene 14 by ozonolysis followed by intramolecular aldol reaction, and stereoselective construction of the sequential tetrasubstituted carbons by dihydroxylation and methylation reaction. Stereospecific incorporation of amine on tetrasubstituted carbon was achieved by Curtius rearrangement and subsequent carbamide formation.

Abstract
The bicyclo[4.3.0]nonane scaffold, commonly known as a hydrindane, is a common structural motif found in many terpenoid structures and one that remains a challenge for synthetic chemists to elaborate with appropriate regio- and stereo-selectivity. Over the course of the study of terpene natural products, the elaboration of the hydrindane structure has seen progress on the utilization of both old and newer methods to achieve the desired outcomes. This review seeks to serve as a general overview of these methods, and detail specific examples.

Abstract
The use of l-sorbose in the synthesis of functionalized cyclopentene derivatives was accomplished. These cyclopentene derivatives are related to those found in naturally occurring jatrophane frameworks and in other bioactive compounds. The formation of allyl α-l-sorbopyranoside was a key synthetic step. Regioselective introduction of protecting groups was followed by the hydrolysis of the allyl glycoside to furnish a fully protected acyclic l-sorbose derivative. This acyclic intermediate was subsequently used to give an orthogonally protected polyhydroxylated cyclopentene, which has potential for further synthesis of bioactive compounds. The protected cyclopentene itself showed a clear cytotoxic activity when tested against a panel of human cancer cell lines (HT29, LS174T, SW620, A549, and HeLa cells).
