Abstract
The synthesis, thermolysis, and surface organometallic chemistry of thermolytic molecular precursors based on a new germanosilicate ligand platform, -OGe[OSi(OtBu)3]3, is described. Use of this ligand is demonstrated with preparation of complexes containing the first-row transition metals Cr, Mn, and Fe. The thermolysis and grafting behavior of the synthesized complexes, Fe{OGe[OSi(OtBu)3]3}2 (FeGe), Mn{OGe[OSi(OtBu)3]3}2(THF)2 (MnGe) and Cr{OGe[OSi(OtBu)3]3}2(THF)2 (CrGe), was evaluated using a combination of thermogravimetric analysis; nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies; and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD). Grafting of the precursors onto SBA-15 mesoporous silica and subsequent calcination in air led to substantial changes in transition metal coordination environments and oxidation states, the implications of which are discussed in the context of low-coordinate and low oxidation state thermolytic molecular precursors.

Abstract
In the present work, possible molecular models of the isolated manganese oxides and supported Mn3Ox/Al2O3 structures were built based on small clusters of passivated MnOx. The support was represented as a simplified model of the alumina tetramer cluster based on small fragments of AlOxHy. Combinations of MnOxHy and AlOxHy clusters were made to form both the isolated and supported manganese oxides clusters. The electronic structure of these systems was characterized by ab initio methods (DFT and CASPT2). It was observed that the vertical excitation energy of the isolated and supported Mn3OxHy clusters is significantly lower than that of the alumina cluster model, while both the isolated and supported Mn3OxHy wave function characters are qualitatively similar with respect to the ground state and electronic transition processes, suggesting that the alumina cluster behaves as an inert support, since there is little contribution of this component in the description of the low-lying electronic states. The present study also reports for the first time the spectroscopic parameters of several clusters containing the manganese transition metal atom.

Abstract
Well-defined organometallics supported on high surface area oxides are promising heterogeneous catalysts. An important design factor in these materials is how the metal interacts with the functionalities on an oxide support, commonly anionic X-type ligands derived from the reaction of an organometallic M-R with an -OH site on the oxide. The metal can either form a covalent M-O bond or form an electrostatic M+⋯-O ion-pair, which impacts how well-defined organometallics will interact with substrates in catalytic reactions. A less common reaction pathway involves the reaction of a Lewis site on the oxide with the organometallic, resulting in abstraction to form an ion-pair, which is relevant to industrial olefin polymerization catalysts. This Feature Article views the spectrum of reactivity between an organometallic and an oxide through the prism of Brønsted and/or Lewis acidity of surface sites and draws analogies to the molecular frame where Lewis and Brønsted acids are known to form reactive ion-pairs. Applications of the well-defined sites developed in this article are also discussed.

Abstract
Despite their importance there is little knowledge at the atomic scale on the interactions between fragments of SARS-CoV-2 and inorganic materials. Such knowledge is important to understand the survival of the virus at surfaces and for the development of antiviral materials. Here is reported a study of the interactions between glucoside monomers of the tip of the S1 subunit of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein with dry and wet surfaces of CuO and Cu, performed with dispersion corrected density functional theory—DFT. The three glucoside monomers that constitute the tip of S1: 6VSB, 6VXX and 6X6P, were adsorbed onto dry and wet CuO(111) and Cu(110) with different orientations and surface alignments. There are large differences—of up to 1.3 eV—in binding energies between these monomers and the surfaces. These differences depend on: the type of surface; if the surface is wet or dry; if the glucosidic O-atom points towards or away from the surfaces; and to a smaller extent on the surface alignment of the monomers. All monomers bind strongly to the surfaces via molecular adsorption that does not involve bond breaking in the monomers at this stage. 6VSB has the larger adsorption energies—that reach 2.2 eV—due to its larger dipole moment. Both materials bind the monomers more strongly when their surfaces are dry. At Cu(110) the bonds are on average 1 eV stronger when the surface is dry when compared to wet. The difference between dry and wet CuO(111) is smaller, in the order of 0.2 eV. Overall, it is here shown that the stability of the monomers of the tip of the spike protein of the virus is very different at different surfaces. For a given surface the larger binding energies in dry conditions could explain the differences in the surface stability of the spike protein depending on the presence of moisture.

Abstract
The fundamental goal of machine learning (ML) in physical science is to predict the physical properties of unobserved states. However, an accurate prediction for input data outside of training distributions is a challenging problem in ML due to the nonlinearities in input and target dynamics. For an accurate extrapolation of ML algorithms, we propose a new data-driven method that encodes the nonlinearities of physical systems into input representations. Based on the proposed encoder, a given physical system is described as linear-like functions that are easy to extrapolate. By applying the proposed encoder, the extrapolation errors were significantly reduced by 48.39% and 40.04% in n-body problem and materials property prediction, respectively.

Abstract
Autonomous computations that rely on automated reaction network elucidation algorithms may pave the way to make computational catalysis on a par with experimental research in the field. Several advantages of this approach are key to catalysis: (i) automation allows one to consider orders of magnitude more structures in a systematic and open-ended fashion than what would be accessible by manual inspection. Eventually, full resolution in terms of structural varieties and conformations as well as with respect to the type and number of potentially important elementary reaction steps (including decomposition reactions that determine turnover numbers) may be achieved. (ii) Fast electronic structure methods with uncertainty quantification warrant high efficiency and reliability in order to not only deliver results quickly, but also to allow for predictive work. (iii) A high degree of autonomy reduces the amount of manual human work, processing errors, and human bias. Although being inherently unbiased, it is still steerable with respect to specific regions of an emerging network and with respect to the addition of new reactant species. This allows for a high fidelity of the formalization of some catalytic process and for surprising in silico discoveries. In this work, we first review the state of the art in computational catalysis to embed autonomous explorations into the general field from which it draws its ingredients. We then elaborate on the specific conceptual issues that arise in the context of autonomous computational procedures, some of which we discuss at an example catalytic system.

Abstract
The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has a key role in electrochemical water splitting. Recently a lot of attention has been dedicated to HER from single atom catalysts (SACs). The activity of SACs in HER is usually rationalized or predicted using the original model proposed by Nørskov where the free energy of a H atom adsorbed on an extended metal surface M (formation of an MH intermediate) is used to explain the trends in the exchange current for HER. However, SACs differ substantially from metal surfaces and can be considered analogues of coordination compounds. In coordination chemistry, at variance with metal surfaces, stable dihydride or dihydrogen complexes (HMH) can form. We show that the same can occur on SACs and that the formation of stable HMH intermediates, in addition to the MH one, may change the kinetics of the process. Extending the original kinetic model to the case of two intermediates (MH and HMH), one obtains a three-dimensional volcano plot for the HER on SACs. DFT numerical simulations on 55 models demonstrate that the new kinetic model may lead to completely different conclusions about the activity of SACs in HER. The results are validated against selected experimental cases. The work provides an example of the important analogies between the chemistry of SACs and that of coordination compounds.

Abstract
Chemical modification of insulating material surfaces is an important methodology to improve the performance of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). However, few redox-active self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been constructed on gate insulator film surfaces, in contrast to the numerous SAMs formed on many types of conducting electrodes. In this study, we report a new approach to introduce a π-conjugated organic fragment in close proximity to an insulating material surface via a transition metal center acting as a one-atom anchor. On the basis of the reported coordination chemistry of a catecholato complex of Pt(II) in solution, we demonstrate that ligand exchange can occur on an insulating material surface, affording SAMs on the SiO2 surface derived from a newly synthesized Pt(II) complex containing a benzothienobenzothiophene (BTBT) framework in the catecholato ligand. The resultant SAMs were characterized in detail by water contact angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The SAMs served as good scaffolds of π-conjugated pillars for forming thin films of a well-known organic semiconductor C8-BTBT (2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene), accompanied by the engagements of the C8-BTBT molecules with the SAMs containing the common BTBT framework at the first layer on SiO2. OFETs containing the SAMs displayed improved performance in terms of hole mobility and onset voltage, presumably because of the unique interfacial structure between the organic semiconducting and inorganic insulating layers. These findings provide important insight into creating new elaborate interfaces through installing coordination chemistry in solution to solid surfaces, as well as OFET design by considering the compatibility between SAMs and organic semiconductors.

Abstract
The spectra of RuS, OsS, CoS, RhS, IrS, and PtS have been recorded near their respective bond dissociation energies using resonant two-photon ionization spectroscopy. The spectra display an abrupt drop to baseline when the bond dissociation energy (BDE) is exceeded. It is argued that spin-orbit and nonadiabatic interactions among the myriad of states that result from the ground and low-lying separated atom limits cause the molecules to predissociate rapidly as soon as the ground separated atom limit is exceeded in energy. Thus, the observed sharp predissociation thresholds are assigned as the 0 K BDEs of the molecules. With this assumption, the BDEs are assigned as follows: 4.071(8) eV (RuS), 4.277(3) eV (OsS), 3.467(5) eV (CoS), 3.611(3) eV (RhS), 4.110(3) eV (IrS), and 4.144(8) eV (PtS). Using thermochemical cycles, the gas-phase enthalpies of formation at 0 K, ΔfH0 K°, were calculated to be 531.8(4.3) kJ mol-1 (RuS), 651.2(6.3) kJ mol-1 (OsS), 365.3(2.2) kJ mol-1 (CoS), 481.5(2.1) kJ mol-1 (RhS), 546.7(6.3) kJ mol-1 (IrS), and 438.9(1.5) kJ mol-1 (PtS). The ionization energies of RuS, CoS, and RhS were also calculated using data on the BDEs of the associated cations and were found to be 8.39(10) eV (RuS), 8.40(9) eV (CoS), and 8.46(12) eV (RhS). Combining these data with predissociation measurements of other transition metal sulfide BDEs, the periodic trends in the transition metal sulfide BDEs are discussed and the BDEs of the transition metal sulfides are compared to those of the corresponding selenides. The BDEs of the sulfides are found to be 15.4% greater than those of the corresponding sulfides.

Abstract
A self-consistent scheme combining the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and density functional theory (DFT) was recently proposed to incorporate the effects of the charge transfer and polarization of ions into non-poralizable force fields of ionic liquids for improved description of energetics and dynamics. The purpose of the present work is to analyze the detailed setups of the MD/DFT scheme by focusing on how the basis set, exchange-correlation (XC) functional, charge-fitting method or force field for the intramolecular and Lennard-Jones interactions affects the MD/DFT results of 1,3-dimethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide ( [C1mim][NTf2]) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium glycinate ( [C2mim][Gly]). It was found that the double-zeta valence polarized or larger size of basis set is required for the convergence of the effective charge of the ion. The choice of the XC functional was further not influential as far as the generalized gradient approximation is used. The charge-fitting method and force field govern the accuracy of the MD/DFT scheme, on the other hand. We examined the charge-fitting methods of Blöchl, the iterative Hirshfeld (Hirshfeld-I), and REPEAT in combination with Lopes et al.'s force field and general AMBER force field. There is no single combination of charge fitting and force field that provides good agreements with the experiments, while the MD/DFT scheme reduces the effective charges of the ions and leads to better description of energetics and dynamics compared to the original force field with unit charges. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
Designing supported well-defined bis(carbene) complexes remains a key challenge in heterogeneous catalysis. The reaction of W(≡CtBu)(CH2 tBu)3 with amine-modified mesoporous SBA15 silica, which has vicinal silanol/silylamine pairs [(≡SiOH)(≡SiNH2 )], leads to [(≡SiNH2 -)(≡SiO-)W(≡CHtBu)(CH2 tBu)2 ] and [(≡SiNH2 -)(≡SiO-)W(=CHtBu)2 (CH2 tBu). Variable temperature, (1) H-(1) H 2D double-quantum, (1) H-(13) C HETCOR, and HETCOR with spin diffusion solid-state NMR spectroscopy demonstrate tautomerization between the alkyl alkylidyne and the bis(alkylidene) on the SBA15 surface. Such equilibrium is possible through the coordination of W to the surface [(≡Si-OH)(≡Si-NH2 )] groups, which act as a [N,O] pincer ligand. DFT calculations provide a rationalization for the surface-complex tautomerization and support the experimental results. This direct observation of such a process shows the strong similarity between molecular mechanisms in homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. In propane metathesis (at 150 °C), the tungsten bis(carbene) tautomer is favorable, with a turnover number (TON) of 262. It is the highest TON among all the tungsten alkyl-supported catalysts.

Abstract
The design of novel heterogeneous catalysts with multiple adjacent functionalities is of high interest to heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we report a method to obtain a majority of bifunctional acid-base pairs on SBA15. Aniline reacts with SBA15 by opening siloxane bridges leading to N-phenylsilanamine-silanol pairs. In contrast with ammonia treated surfaces, the material is stable under air/moisture. Advanced solid state MAS NMR (2D 1H-1H double-quantum, 1H-13C HETCOR) experiments and dynamic nuclear polarization enhanced 29Si and 15N spectra demonstrate both the close proximity between the two moieties and the formation of a covalent Si-N surface bond and confirm the design of vicinal acid-base pairs. This approach was successfully applied to the design of a series of aniline derivatives of bifunctional SBA15. A correlation between the substituent effects on the aromatic ring (Hammett parameters) with the kinetics of a model Knoevenagel reaction is observed.

Abstract
![]()
Ruthenium complexes
of the general formula [Ru(CO)(H)(L2)(L′2)][PF6] (L2 = trans-2PPh3, L′ = η2-4,4′-dicarboxybipyridine
(1); L2 =trans-2Ph2PCH2CH2COOH, L′2 = bipyridine
(2); L2 = Ph2PCHCHPPh2, L′ = η2-5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline (3); L2 = trans-2PPh3, L′2 = η2-4-carboxaldehyde-4′-methylbipyridine
(4)) have been shown to have longer emission lifetimes
and higher quantum yields in solution compared with more symmetrical
molecules such as [Ru(bpy)3][Cl]2. Compound 4 is obtained as a mixture with the corresponding acetal, 4′. These less symmetrical complexes have been covalently
immobilized on the surface of silica polyamine composites, and their
photophysical properties have been studied. The surface-bound complexes
have been characterized by solid-state CPMAS 13C, 31P, and 29Si NMR, UV–vis, and FT-IR spectroscopies.
Excited-state lifetime studies revealed that, in general, the lifetimes
of the immobilized complexes are 1.4 to 8 times longer than in solution
and are dependent on particle size (300–500 μm versus
10–20 nm average diameter silica gels), polymer structure (linear
poly(allylamine) versus branched poly(ethylenimine)), and the type
of surface tether. One exception to this trend is the previously reported
complex [Ru(bpy)2(5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline)][PF6]2 (5), where only a slight increase
in lifetime is observed. Only minor changes in emission wavelength
are observed for all the complexes. This opens up the possibility
for enhanced heterogeneous electron transfer in photocatalytic reactions.
