Oligo(phenyleneethynylene)s: Shape-Tunable Building Blocks for Supramolecular Self-Assembly

Oligo(phenyleneethynylene)s (OPEs) have attracted widespread attention due to their remarkable (opto)electronic and photophysical properties, which have enabled numerous applications. The versatile functionalization possibilities of OPEs make them unique candidates to form various shape-persistent geometries, including linear, triangular, rectangular, hexagonal and macrocyclic. However, as a result of this structural variety, it is oftentimes challenging to correlate molecular design with self-assembly properties. In this minireview, we have classified OPEs based on their molecular shapes and correlated them with their self-assembly behavior in solution. Particularly, we provide important insights into the aggregation propensity of the different molecular shapes and how to tune the association strength using various non-covalent interactions. Our classification will enable a better understanding of the structure-property correlation in OPEs, which is key to develop supramolecular functional materials.

Palladium-Catalyzed Decarbonylative Sonogashira Alkynylation of Carboxylic-Phosphoric Anhydrides

We report the first palladium-catalyzed decarbonylative alkynylation of carboxylic-phosphoric anhydrides via highly selective C(O)-O bond cleavage. Carboxylic-phosphoric anhydrides are highly active carboxylic acid derivatives, which are generated through activating carboxylic acids using phosphates by esterification or direct dehydrogenative coupling with phosphites. Highly valuable internal alkynes have been generated by the present method, and the efficiency of this approach has been demonstrated through a wide substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance.

Transforming Hetera-Buckybowls into Chiral Conjugated Polycycles Incorporating Epoxycyclooctadiene: a Two-Step Approach

Chiral π-conjugated polycycles have garnered increasing attention due to versatile applications in optoelectronic materials and biological sciences. In this study, we report the synthesis of chiral π-conjugated polycycles incorporating a chiral epoxycyclooctadiene moiety. Our synthetic strategy capitalizes on the novel reactions of hetera-buckybowl triselenasumanene (TSS) and is achieved in two-step manner. Firstly, the TSS is regio-selectively transformed into its ortho-quinone form. Subsequently, the nucleophilic addition reactions of TSS ortho-quinone by phenylethynides are metal ion-dependent. When utilizing (phenylethynyl)magnesium bromide as the nucleophile, two phenylethynyls are furnished onto the edged benzene ring of TSS. When the nucleophile is (phenylethynyl)lithium, a cascade of nucleophilic addition, intermolecular electron-transfer, ring-opening, and tetradehydro-Diels-Alder (TDDA) reactions occur sequentially in one-pot, ultimately affording chiral π-conjugated polycycles featuring the epoxycyclooctadiene moiety as an integral part of their backbones. This work represents a step forward in the synthesis of chiral π-conjugated polycycles using TSS as synthon.

Structure-Property Relationship, Glass Transition, and Crystallization Behaviors of Conjugated Polymers

Conjugated polymers have gained considerable interest due to their unique structures and promising applications in areas such as optoelectronics, photovoltaics, and flexible electronics. This review focuses on the structure-property relationship, glass transition, and crystallization behaviors of conjugated polymers. Understanding the relationship between the molecular structure of conjugated polymers and their properties is essential for optimizing their performance. The glass transition temperature (Tg) plays a key role in determining the processability and application of conjugated polymers. We discuss the mechanisms underlying the glass transition phenomenon and explore how side-chain interaction affects Tg. The crystallization behavior of conjugated polymers significantly impacts their mechanical and electrical properties. We investigate the nucleation and growth processes, as well as the factors that influence the crystallization process. The development of the three generations of conjugated polymers in controlling the crystalline structure and enhancing polymer ordering is also discussed. This review highlights advanced characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and thermal analysis, which provide insights into molecular ordering and polymer-crystal interfaces. This review provides an insight of the structure-property relationship, glass transition, and crystallization behaviors of conjugated polymers. It serves as a foundation for further research and development of conjugated polymer-based materials with enhanced properties and performance.

Ring Expansion Alkyne Metathesis Polymerization

The synthesis, characterization, and preliminary activity of an unprecedented tethered alkylidyne tungsten complex for ring expansion alkyne metathesis polymerization (REAMP) are reported. The tethered alkylidyne 7 is generated rapidly by combining alkylidyne W(CtBu)(CH2tBu)(O-2,6-i-Pr2C6H3)2 (6) with 1 equiv of an yne-ol proligand (5). Characterized by NMR studies and nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy, complex 7 is a dimer. Each metal center contains a tungsten-carbon triple bond tethered to the metal center via an alkoxide ligand. The polymerization of the strained cycloalkyne 3,8-didodecyloxy-5,6-dihydro-11,12-didehydrodibenzo[a,e]-[8]annulene, 8, to generate cyclic polymers was demonstrated. Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and intrinsic viscosity (η) measurements confirm the polymer's cyclic topology.

NHC-mediated photocatalytic deoxygenation of alcohols for the synthesis of internal alkynes via a Csp3-Csp coupling reaction

NHC-mediated deoxygenation of alcohols under photocatalytic conditions is described. The process provides various alkyl radicals, which can react with 1-bromoalkyne via Csp3-Csp coupling to afford internal alkynes in moderate to good yields. The method offers a new and convenient approach to synthesize internal alkynes.

Synthesis, structure, and properties of switchable cross-conjugated 1,4-diaryl-1,3-butadiynes based on 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene

A set of novel 1,4-diaryl-1,3-butadiynes terminated by two 7-(arylethynyl)-1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene fragments was prepared via the Glaser-Hay oxidative dimerization of 2-ethynyl-7-(arylethynyl)-1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalenes. The oligomers synthesized in this way are cross-conjugated systems, in which two conjugation pathways are possible: π-conjugation of 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene (DMAN) fragments through a butadiyne linker and a donor-acceptor aryl-C≡C-DMAN conjugation path. The conjugation path can be "switched" simply by protonation of DMAN fragments. X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry are applied to analyze the extent of π-conjugation and the efficiency of particular donor-acceptor conjugation path in these new compounds. X-ray structures and absorption spectra of doubly protonated tetrafluoroborate salts of the oligomers are also discussed.

Design and synthesis of photostable triphenylamine based neutral AIE nano luminogens: specific and long-term tracking of mitochondria in cells

With the increasing dependence on fluorescence bioimaging, luminogens with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties have gained significant attention due to their excellent photostabilization, minimal photobleaching, high reliability, and superior biocompatibility. Since mitochondria are crucial subcellular organelles in eukaryotic cells with important biological functions, organelle-specific AIE emitters with distinct functions have been highly sought after, but with limited success using simple synthetic methods. Here, we describe a strategy for synthesizing two triphenylamine (TPA) based acrylonitriles, tethered to different donor groups, TPA and phenothiazine (PTZ), respectively, with superior AIE properties using Suzuki coupling. We conducted a systematic and detailed experimental analysis of the structural characteristics of both AIE luminogens, which exhibited excellent photostability, a large Stokes shift, and bright solid-state emission. A cell viability study carried out with F1 and F2 dyes revealed that both luminogens exhibited excellent biocompatibility. Based on fluorescence experiments, F2 displayed excellent AIE characteristics, permeability, biocompatibility, and photostability compared to rhodamine 123, allowing it to selectively stain and track mitochondria in cancer cells over an extended period of time. The Pearson correlation coefficient of F2 and rhodamine 123 was estimated to have an r-value of 0.99. Our findings are expected to provide insight into the synthesis of an extensive archive of AIE-based acrylonitriles with fascinating properties for mitochondrial staining.

Cu/Oxalic Diamide-Catalyzed Coupling of Terminal Alkynes with Aryl Halides

N¹-(2,6-Dimethylphenyl)-N²-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)oxalamide (DMPPO) was revealed to be a more effective ligand for copper-catalyzed coupling reaction of (hetero)aryl halides with 1-alkynes than previously reported ones. Only 3 mol % CuCl and DMPPO are required to make the coupling complete at 100 °C (for bromides) and 80 °C (for iodides). Both (hetero)aryl and alkyl substituted 1-alkynes worked well under these conditions, leading to the formation of internal alkynes in great diversity.

As Fiber Meets with AIE: Opening a Wonderland for Smart Flexible Materials

Aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) have recently been developed at a tremendous pace in the area of organic luminescent materials by virtue of their superior properties. However, the practical applications of AIEgens still face the challenge of transforming AIEgens from molecules into materials. Till now, many AIEgens have been integrated into fiber, endowing the fiber with prominent fluorescence and/or photosensitizing capacities. AIEgens and fiber complement each other for making progress in flexible smart materials, in which the utilization of AIEgens creates new application possibilities for fiber, and the fiber provides an excellent carrier for AIEgens towards realizing the conversion from molecule to materials and an ideal platform to research the aggregate state of AIEgens in mesoscale and macroscale. This review begins with a brief summary of the recent advances related to some typical AIEgens with various functions and the technology for the fabrication of AIEgen-functionalized fiber. The most representative applications are then highlighted by focusing on energy conversion, personal protective equipment, biomedical, sensor, and fluorescence-related fields. Finally, the challenges, opportunities, and tendencies in future development are discussed in detail. This review hopes to inspire innovation in AIEgens and fiber from the view of mesoscale and macroscale.

Visible-Light-Mediated Deacylated Alkynylation of Unstrained Ketone

Deconstructive alkynylation of an unstrained ketone catalyzed by an organic photocatalyst under blue light irradiation is reported for the first time. A broad substrate scope with up to 63 examples, excellent functional group tolerance, and gram scale reaction demonstrated the practicality of this novel alkynylation method. The dihydroquinazolinone derivative of trifluoroacetophenone had been proved to have potential as a novel trifluoromethylation reagent after working well for the trifluoromethylation reaction with various alkynyl bromides.

Alkyne Polymers from Stable Butatriene Homologues: Controlled Radical Polymerization of Vinylidenecyclopropanes

Controlled polymerization of cumulenic monomers represents a promising yet underdeveloped strategy toward well-defined alkyne polymers. Here we report a stereoelectronic effect-inspired approach using simple vinylidenecyclopropanes (VDCPs) as butatriene homologues in controlled radical ring-opening polymerizations. While being thermally stable, VDCPs mimic butatrienes via conjugation of the cyclopropane ring. This leads to exclusive terminal-selective propagation that affords a highly structurally regular alkyne-based backbone, featuring complete ring-opening and no backbiting regardless of polymerization conditions.

Azaarenes: 13 Rings in a Row by Cyclopentannulation

Cyclopentannulation was explored as a strategy to access large, stable azaarenes. Buchwald-Hartwig coupling of previously reported di- and tetrabrominated cyclopentannulated N,N'-dihydrotetraazapentacenes furnished stable azaarenes with up to 13 six-membered rings in a row and a length of 3.1 nm. Their optoelectronic and semi-conducting properties as well as their aromaticity were investigated.

Fused diethynylbenzenes and phenanthrenes via arynes with alkynylsilanes

A method for the hydroalkynylation and catalytic cyclization reactions of hexadehydro-Diels-Alder-derived benzynes is described. Diethynylbenzene derivatives are generated in a one-step reaction via trimethylsilyl-alkyne groups with benzyne formed by heating the appropriate tetrayne substrate. Trimethyl(phenylethynyl)silane loses TMS and binds to the electron-deficient site on HDDA-derived benzynes, and then phenanthrene was synthesized under mild reaction conditions by transition-metal-free, base promoted intramolecular cyclization.

Amino-OPE glycosides and blue light: a powerful synergy in photodynamic therapy

Herein we report the synthesis and biological properties of sugar-conjugated oligophenylene ethynylene (OPE) dyes, used as novel photosensitizers (PSs) for photodynamic treatment (PDT) under blue light. The OPE-bearing glycosides at both ends are successfully prepared by a Pd-catalyzed Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction. The live-cell imaging studies have shown that these OPE glycosides (including glucose, mannose and maltose derivatives) efficiently penetrate the cytoplasm of cultured HeLa cancer cells. No dark toxicity was observed, but upon irradiating the cells under blue light an extraordinary photodynamic effect was observed at low concentrations (10^-6-10^-8 M). The localization studies indicate that OPE-glucose 1 and OPE-mannose 2 have Golgi patterns, whereas OPE-maltose 3 could be in lysosomes. The PDT and morphological studies in HeLa cells treated with sublethal doses of PS 1-3 revealed that cell death occurs by necrosis.

Torsional disorder and planarization dynamics: 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene as a case study

Conjugated molecules with phenylethynyl building blocks are usually characterised by torsional disorder at room temperature. They are much more rigid in the electronic excited state due to conjugation. As a consequence, the electronic absorption and emission spectra do not present a mirror-image relationship. Here, we investigate how torsional disorder affects the excited state dynamics of 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene in solvents of different viscosities and in polymers, using both stationary and ultrafast electronic spectroscopies. Temperature-dependent measurements reveal inhomogeneous broadening of the absorption spectrum at room temperature. This is confirmed by ultrafast spectroscopic measurements at different excitation wavelengths. Red-edge irradiation excites planar molecules that return to the ground state without significant structural dynamics. In this case, however, re-equilibration of the torsional disorder in the ground state can be observed. Higher-energy irradiation excites torsionally disordered molecules, which then planarise, leading to important spectral dynamics. The latter is found to occur partially via viscosity-independent inertial motion, whereas it is purely diffusive in the ground state. This dissimilarity is explained in terms of the steepness of the potential along the torsional coordinate.

Synergistic catalysis for the synthesis of semiconducting polymers

Organic semiconductors have received much interest over the past few decades. As the field has progressed, so has the complexity of the molecular structures of organic semiconductors. Often, the highest-performing organic semiconductors (i.e., those with the highest charge mobility or those that provide the highest power conversion efficiencies in organic photovoltaics) involve complex syntheses, making them very challenging to synthesize, even by experienced synthetic chemists. In this focused review, we report on recent efforts in developing more efficient synthetic pathways. Specifically, the concept of synergistic catalysis, which involves the use of two or more catalysts with orthogonal reactivity to enable reactions that are not possible with the use of a single catalyst, is introduced. Synergistic catalysis allows for controlled polymerizations, room-temperature reactions, and/or polymerizations with greater regioselectivity, opening the door to more time-, labor-, cost-, and energy-saving methods for synthesizing semiconducting polymers.

Copper-catalyzed deacetonative Sonogashira coupling

A convenient Pd- and phosphine-free protocol for assembling internal alkynes from tertiary propargyl alcohols and (het)aryl halides has been developed. The proposed tandem approach includes the base-promoted retro-Favorskii fragmentation followed by Cu-catalyzed C(sp)-C(sp²) cross-coupling. The use of inexpensive reagents (e.g. a catalyst, additives, a base, and a solvent) and good functional group tolerance make the procedure practical and cost-effective. The synthetic utility of the method was demonstrated by a smooth alkynylation of vinyl iodides derived from natural steroidal hormones.

Dynamic Fluorescent Anti-Counterfeiting Labels Based on Conjugated Polymers Confined in Submicron Fibrous Membranes

Developing a new anti-counterfeiting strategy is of great significance to combating the global counterfeiting problem. Here we report the construction of a dynamic fluorescence response system for anti-counterfeiting by combining the photochromism induced by the ring-opening of spiropyran (SP) to merocyanine (MC) with the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the conjugated polymer and MC. After elucidating the design principle, a new conjugated polymer, PPETE-SP, consisting of a poly[p-(phenylene ethynylene)-alt-(thienylene-ethynylene)] (PPETE) backbone with pendant SP, was synthesized and characterized. With poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as the matrix, the PPETE-SP/PMMA fibrous membrane was prepared via electrospinning. Under the irradiation of UV light, the fluorescent color of the membrane dynamically changed from green to light green, then light pink, and finally pink, and this process was reversible under visible light. The fluorescence emission switch was examined for 10 cycles and proved to have good repeatability, indicating that the membrane can be directly used as an anti-counterfeiting label for multiple verifications. The FRET efficiency was found to be about 61% based on the FRET study with confocal laser scanning microscopy. The covalent bonding between PPETE backbone and SP, the confinement of PPETE-SP chains in the fibrous membrane, as well as employing PMMA as the matrix were demonstrated to be crucial in realizing the photochromism and the FRET. Different anti-counterfeiting modes were proposed, providing rich selections for operation of verification. Such facile-to-operate and hard-to-imitate dynamic fluorescent responsive materials are very promising for use in practical anti-counterfeiting applications.

Precise Stepwise Synthesis of Donor-Acceptor Conjugated Polymer Brushes Grafted from Surfaces

Donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers are promising materials in optoelectronic applications, especially those forming ordered thin films. The processability of such conjugated macromolecules is typically enhanced by introducing bulky side chains, but it may affect their ordering and/or photophysical properties of the films. We show here the synthesis of surface-grafted D-A polymer brushes using alternating attachment of tailored monomers serving as electron donors (D) and acceptors (A) via coupling reactions. In such a stepwise procedure, alternating copolymer brushes consisting of thiophene and benzothiadiazole-based moieties with precisely tailored thickness and no bulky substituents were formed. The utilization of Sonogashira coupling was shown to produce densely packed molecular wires of tailored thickness, while Stille coupling and Huisgen cycloaddition were less efficient, likely because of the higher flexibility of D-A bridging groups. The D-A brushes exhibit reduced bandgaps, semiconducting properties and can form aggregates, which can be adjusted by changing the grafting density of the chains.

Photophysical and Electrochemical Properties of Push-Pull Oligo(ferrocenyl-phenyleneethynylene)s: Supramolecular Orders in Molecular Films

We report on the optoelectronic properties of a series of unsymmetrical π-conjugated phenyleneethynylene macromolecules bearing ferrocene (Fc) as the electron-donor group (D), (benzyl) benzoate (Bz) or benzoic acid (Ac) as the electron attractor group (A) and connected through 2,5-di(alcoxy) phenyleneethynylene(s) (nPE) with n = 1, 2, 3 as π-conjugated bridges. In the series, by increasing the distance between the electron-attracting and electron-donor groups, the push-pull effect decreases. The intramolecular charge transfer (D → π → A) was evaluated by static and dynamic spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and density functional theory (DFT) theoretical calculations. The longest oligomer Fc3PEBz formed the best optical quality films. A study at the atomic level by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) revealed that the molecules self-assemble on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) in domains with a short-range order. Films are mesoporous and the molecules arrange in a lamellar-like pattern, with an edge-on conformation with respect to HOPG, where the conjugated backbones lie parallel to the surface. Two different assemblies were identified in the monoatomic film, which depends on the ferrocene-ferrocene or benzyl-benzyl interactions.

Direct C-H Dehydrogenative Germylation of Terminal Alkynes with Hydrogermanes

A direct C(sp)-H germylation of terminal alkynes with triethyl germanium hydride is reported. The method is operationally simple and makes use of B(C₆F₅)₃ catalysis in combination with 2,6-lutidine as an organic base. Exclusive selectivity for dehydrogenative germylation of the alkyne over the competing hydrogermylation is observed.

Self-assembled organic and hybrid materials derived from oligo-(p-phenyleneethynylenes)

Oligo-(p-Phenyleneethynylenes) (OPEs) have garnered widespread interest over the past three decades due to their excellent opto-electronic properties. However, the chief focus has been on the use of mainly small molecules or polymeric systems for the study of their structural diversity in opto-electronic applications. Recently, researchers have started delving deeper into their utility in material applications. Purely organic materials such as supramolecular polymers, self-assembled nanostructures, nanostructured organogels and single-crystalline materials derived from OPEs have already been developed and researched. Chirality has also been introduced into these systems. Additionally, these have shown physical properties such as polymorphism, liquid crystallinity, melt formation, mechanochromism, etc. All these materials have also shown excellent luminescence properties with high quantum yield and some have even shown energy harvesting properties. There have also been sporadic reports on OPE linker based hybrid systems such as metallogels and metal-organic framework (MOF) structures where structural analysis reveals the origin of tunable emission in these materials. Furthermore, by innovative structural design, unexplored properties of OPEs such as water repellency, bioimaging, drug delivery, photocatalysis, energy transfer, nanomorphology control, photoconductivity, and colour tunability could be achieved. This feature article will, therefore, encompass a detailed discussion on the development of this field as well as the analysis of the properties realized in OPE derived self-assembled supramolecular materials. The main focus will be on the following classes of materials: soft supramolecular materials, crystalline supramolecular π-systems, nanoscale metal-organic frameworks (NMOFs) and bulk metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and how their application horizon has been expanded by integrating OPEs into their structures.

Autonomous Visualization of Damage in Polymers by Metal-Free Polymerizations of Microencapsulated Activated Alkynes

The development of autonomous materials with desired performance and built-in visualizable sensing units is of great academic and industrial significance. Although a wide range of damage indication methods have been reported, the "turn-on" sensing mechanism by damaging events based on microcapsule systems, especially those relying on chemical reactions to elicit a chromogenic response, are still very limited. Herein, a facile and metal-free polymerization route with an interesting reaction-induced coloration effect is demonstrated. Under the catalysis of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO), the polymerizations of difunctional or trifunctional activated alkynes proceed very quickly at 0 °C in air. A series of polymers composed of stereoregular enyne structure (major unit) and divinyl ether structure (minor unit) are obtained. Both the catalyst and monomers are colorless while the polymerized products are deep-colored. This process can be applied for the damage visualization of polymers using the microencapsulation technique. Microcapsules containing the reactive alkyne monomer are prepared and mixed in a DABCO-dispersed polymer film. Both the external and internal damage regions of this composite film can be readily visualized once the reaction is initiated from the ruptured microcapsules. Moreover, the newly formed polymer automatically seals the cracks with an additional protection function.

Manipulating the Self-Assembly of Phenyleneethynylenes under Vibrational Strong Coupling

The chemical and physical properties of molecules and materials are known to be modified significantly under vibrational strong coupling (VSC). To gain insight into the effects of VSC on π-π interactions involved in molecular self-assembly, themselves sensitive to vacuum electromagnetic field fluctuations, the aggregation of two structural isomers (linear and V-shaped) of phenyleneethynylene under cooperative coupling was investigated. By coupling the aromatic C═C stretching band, the assembly of one of the molecules results in the formation of spheres as opposed to flakes under normal conditions. As a consequence, the electronic absorption and emission spectra of the self-assembled structures are also modified significantly. The VSC-induced changes depend not only on the type of vibration that is coupled but also on the symmetry of the phenyleneethynylene isomer. These results confirm that VSC can be used to drive molecular assemblies to new structural minima and thereby provide a new tool for supramolecular chemistry.

Microwave-assisted, Copper-free Sonogashira Coupling Between Aryl Halides and Terminal Alkynes Using Recyclable Ionic Liquid and Catalyst

An efficient method for the Sonogashira coupling reaction between aryl halides and terminal alkynes has been developed. The reaction was performed in ionic liquid 1-butyl-3- methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Bmim][BF4]) under microwave irradiation. High yields of products were obtained in a very short reaction time. Moreover, the medium and catalyst could be recovered and reused three times without considerable decrease in reaction yields.

Leveraging the 1,3-azadiene-anhydride reaction for the synthesis of functionalized piperidines bearing up to five contiguous stereocenters

A modular and scalable strategy, which remodels 3-methylglutaric anhydride to 2-oxopiperidines bearing at least three contiguous stereocenters is described. The approach relies on the chemoselective and stereocontrolled annulation of 1,3-azadienes with the anhydride component. The resulting acid-tethered allylic 2-oxopiperidines are then engaged in several selective fragment growth processes, including catalytic denitrative alkenylation, halolactonization, and Vilsmeier–Haack functionalization.

A modular and scalable strategy, which converts 3-methylglutaric anhydride to 2-oxopiperidines bearing at least three contiguous stereocenters is described.

Aggregation-Induced Emission-Active Poly(phenyleneethynylene)s for Fluorescence and Raman Dual-Modal Imaging and Drug-Resistant Bacteria Killing

Poly(phenyleneethynylene) (PPE) is a widely used functional conjugated polymer with applications ranging from organic optoelectronics and fluorescence sensors to optical imaging and theranostics. However, the fluorescence efficiency of PPE in aggregate states is generally not as good as their solution states, which greatly compromises their performance in fluorescence-related applications. Herein, a series of PPE derivatives with typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties is designed and synthesized. In these PPEs, the diethylamino-substituted tetraphenylethene units function as the long-wavelength AIE source and the alkyl side chains serve as the functionalization site. The obtained AIE-active PPEs with large π-conjugation show strong aggregate-state fluorescence, interesting self-assembly behaviors, inherently enhanced alkyne vibrations in the Raman-silent region of cells, and efficient antibacterial activities. The PPE nanoparticles with good cellular uptake capability can clearly and sensitively visualize the tumor region and residual tumors via their fluorescence and Raman signals, respectively, to benefit the precise tumor resection surgery. After post-functionalization, the obtained PPE-based polyelectrolyte can preferentially image bacteria over mammalian cells and possesses efficient photodynamic killing capability against Gram-positive and drug-resistant bacteria. This work provides a feasible design strategy for developing functional conjugated polymers with multimodal imaging capability as well as photodynamic antimicrobial ability.

Butterfly-Like Triarylamines with High Hole Mobility and On/Off Ratio in Bottom-Gated OFETs

Highly π-extended butterfly-shaped triarylamine dyads with aryleneethynylene spacer were constructed using an efficient synthetic route. These aryleneethynylene-bridged dyads are highly fluorescent and exhibited high HOMO levels, and low bandgaps, which are suitable for high-performance p-type OFETs. The field-effect transistors were fabricated through a solution-processable method and exhibited promising p-type performance with field-effect mobility up to 4.3 cm² /Vs and high I_on/off of 10⁸ under ambient conditions.

Developments in Synthesis and Potential Electronic and Magnetic Applications of Pristine and Doped Graphynes

Doping and its consequences on the electronic features, optoelectronic features, and magnetism of graphynes (GYs) are reviewed in this work. First, synthetic strategies that consider numerous chemically and dimensionally different structures are discussed. Simultaneous or subsequent doping with heteroatoms, controlling dimensions, applying strain, and applying external electric fields can serve as effective ways to modulate the band structure of these new sp2/sp allotropes of carbon. The fundamental band gap is crucially dependent on morphology, with low dimensional GYs displaying a broader band gap than their bulk counterparts. Accurately chosen precursors and synthesis conditions ensure complete control of the morphological, electronic, and physicochemical properties of resulting GY sheets as well as the distribution of dopants deposited on GY surfaces. The uniform and quantitative inclusion of non-metallic (B, Cl, N, O, or P) and metallic (Fe, Co, or Ni) elements into graphyne derivatives were theoretically and experimentally studied, which improved their electronic and magnetic properties as row systems or in heterojunction. The effect of heteroatoms associated with metallic impurities on the magnetic properties of GYs was investigated. Finally, the flexibility of doped GYs' electronic and magnetic features recommends them for new electronic and optoelectronic applications.

Topology-Controlled AIEE of Iminocoumarin Luminophores

Aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) is an unusual phenomenon where luminophores show a higher photoluminescence efficiency in the aggregated and solid state. We report the design and synthesis of a series of luminophores 1-4 with imine functionality at 6 position of coumarin and studied their AIE propensities on self-assembly. The effect of the topology of the phenolic hydroxyl group on the emission behaviour of the luminophores has been investigated. The imines show significant solvatochromism with high emission in non-polar solvents, whereas the emission gets quenched in the polar solvent. The fluorescence in the toluene-hexane mixture arises due to the aggregation of fluorophores and falls under the category of AIEE. Not only the solution state emission of the isomeric iminocoumarin luminophores is notably varied, but also their solid-state emission found to be significantly different from each other. Moreover, the iminocoumarin 1 selectively recognizes Fe(III) over Fe(II) with a prominent color change. In situ oxidation of Fe(II) with H₂ O₂ exhibits the same effect like Fe(III) and developed a chemical combinational logic gate.

Pd nanoparticles loaded on modified chitosan-Unye bentonite microcapsules: A reusable nanocatalyst for Sonogashira coupling reaction

This work investigates the preparation of a catalytic complex of palladium nanoparticles supported on novel Schiff base modified chitosan-Unye bentonite microcapsules (Pd NPs@CS-UN). The complex has been characterized by FT-IR, EDS, XRD, TEM, HRTEM, Raman, ICP-OES and elemental mapping analyses. Pd NPs@CS-UN was used as a catalyst for Sonogashira coupling reactions between aryl halides and acetylenes, employing K₂CO₃ as the base and EtOH as a green solvent under aerobic conditions in which it showed high efficacy. Pd NPs@CS-UN was regenerated by filtration after the completion of the reaction. This catalytic process has many advantages including simple methodology, high yields, and easy work-up. The catalytic performance does not notably change even after five consecutive runs.

Chromatic Conductive Polymer Nanocomposites of Poly (p-Phenylene Ethynylene)s and Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

We report on dispersions and thin films of chromatic conductive nanocomposites of poly(p-phenylene ethynylene)s (PPEs) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) generated via solution mixing. The linear, conjugated PPEs with dialkyl- and dialkyloxy-side chain groups are shown to debundle and disperse high concentration (up to 2.5 mg/mL) SWNTs in various organic solvents. The solubilization of SWNTs and PPE wrapping is accompanied with the change in the solution color. Ultraviolet visible absorption spectra of nanocomposite solutions demonstrate a new absorption peak at a higher wavelength, supporting the observed chromatism. Fluorescence spectra of nanocomposite solutions display significant quenching of the fluorescence intensity and the Stern–Volmer model is used to analyze fluorescence quenching. Electron microscopy of the chromatic solid films of high mass fraction PPE/SWNT nanocomposites obtained by vacuum filtration reveals the debundled SWNTs in the PPE matrix. The tensile strength and Young’s modulus of these PPE/SWNT nanocomposite films are as high as 150 MPa and 15 GPa, respectively. The composite films exhibit remarkably high conductivities, ranging from ~1000 S/m to ~10,000 S/m for 10 wt% and 60 wt% SWNT nanocomposites, respectively.

A Portrait of the OPE as a Biological Agent

Oligophenylene ethynylenes, known as OPEs, are a sequence of aromatic rings linked by triple bonds, the properties of which can be modulated by varying the length of the rigid main chain or/and the nature and position of the substituents on the aromatic units. They are luminescent molecules with high quantum yields and can be designed to enter a cell and act as antimicrobial and antiviral compounds, as biocompatible fluorescent probes directed towards target organelles in living cells, as labelling agents, as selective sensors for the detection of fibrillar and prefibrillar amyloid in the proteic field and in a fluorescence turn-on system for the detection of saccharides, as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy (due to their capacity to highly induce toxicity after light activation), and as drug delivery systems. The antibacterial properties of OPEs have been the most studied against very popular and resistant pathogens, and in this paper the achievements of these studies are reviewed, together with almost all the other roles held by such oligomers. In the recent decade, their antifungal and antiviral effects have attracted the attention of researchers who believe OPEs to be possible biocides of the future. The review describes, for instance, the preliminary results obtained with OPEs against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Highly Stable, Nondestructive, and Simple Visualization of Latent Blood Fingerprints Based on Covalent Bonding Between the Fluorescent Conjugated Polymer and Proteins in Blood

Latent blood fingerprints (LBFPs) can provide critical information of foul play and help identify the suspects at violent crime scenes. The current methods for LBFP visualization are still not satisfactory because of the low sensitivity or complicated protocol. This study demonstrates a simple and effective LBFP visualization strategy by integrating a new amphiphilic fluorescent amino-functionalized conjugated polymer with the cotton-pad developing protocol. LBFPs on various substrates are visualized by simply covering them with the polymer solution-soaked cotton pads. The images display clear fingerprint patterns, ridge details, and sweat pores, even on very challenging substrates such as painted wood and multicolored can. The gray value analysis confirms semiquantitatively the enhancement of the contrast between ridges and furrows. Even LBFPs with various contaminations or aged for more than 600 days are effectively developed and visualized. The developed fingerprint images show superior stability over long storage time and against solvent washing. Moreover, the polymer causes no degradation of DNAs in the blood, suggesting the possibility of further DNA profiling and identification after development. The mechanistic investigation suggests that the formation of positive or inverted images can be attributed to the synergistic effects from the affinity between polymer and blood, and the affinity betwen polymer and substrate, as well as the slight quenching of polymer fluorescence by blood. Furthermore, the covalent bonding between the protonated primary amino group and proteins in blood endows the stability of the developed fingerprints. The result rationalizes the molecular design of the fluorescent polymer and sheds new light on the future strategies to effective LBFP visualization in practical applications.
