Abstract
The development of an efficient and straightforward method for cyanation of alcohols is of great value. However, the cyanation of alcohols always requires toxic cyanide sources. Herein, an unprecedented synthetic application of an isonitrile as a safer cyanide source in B(C6F5)3-catalyzed direct cyanation of alcohols is reported. With this approach, a wide range of valuable α-aryl nitriles was synthesized in good to excellent yields (up to 98%). The reaction can be scaled up and the practicability of this approach is further manifested in the synthesis of an anti-inflammatory drug, naproxen. Moreover, experimental studies were performed to illustrate the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
Abstract
In this review, we give a brief overview of recently developed montmorillonite-based heterogeneous catalysts used for efficient organic reactions. Cation-exchanged montmorillonite catalysts, metal catalysts supported on montmorillonite, and an interlayer design used for selective catalysis are introduced and discussed. In traditional syntheses, homogeneous acids and metal salts were used as catalysts, but the difficulty in separation of catalysts from products was a bottleneck when considering industrialization. The use of solid heterogeneous catalysts is one of the major solutions to overcome this problem. Montmorillonite can be used as a heterogeneous catalyst and/or catalyst support. This clay material exhibits strong acidity and a stabilizing effect on active species, such as metal nanoparticles, due to its unique layered structure. These advantages have led to the development of montmorillonite-based heterogeneous catalysts. Acidic montmorillonite, such as proton-exchanged montmorillonite, exhibits a high catalytic activity for the activation of electrophiles, such as alcohols, alkenes, and even alkanes. The montmorillonite interlayer/surface also functions as a good support for various metal species used for oxidation and carbon-carbon bond forming reactions. The use of an interlayer structure enables selective reactions and the stabilization of catalytically active species.

Abstract
An unprecedented Sc(OTf)3-catalyzed C2-selective cyanation/defluorination cascade of perfluoroalkylated 3-indolylmethanols with TMSCN is described, which provides a novel and practical strategy for the synthesis of structurally diverse 3-(2-cyano)-indolyl substituted gem-difluoroalkenes and β-fluoro-β-perfluoroalkylalkenes. The reaction features excellent regio- and stereoselectivity and broad substrate scope. Notably, the obtained gem-difluoroalkenes and β-fluoro-β-perfluoroalkylalkenes could be easily transformed into 3-fluoro(perfluoroalkyl)-β-carbolines with excellent efficiency simply by treating them with Grignard reagents or DIBAL-H under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract
Herein reported is a nickel-catalyzed isomerization/allylic cyanation of alkenyl alcohols, which complements current methods for the allylic substitution reactions. The specific diphosphite ligand and methanol as the solvent are crucial for the success for this transformation. A gram-scale regioconvergent experiment and formal synthesis of quebrachamine demonstrate the high potential of this methodology.

Abstract
Ligand-controlled palladium-catalyzed divergent synthesis of isonitriles and nitriles from benzylic carbonates and TMSCN has been developed. The BINAP- or DPEphos-ligated palladium catalyst selectively provides the corresponding benzylic isonitriles, whereas their regioisomers, benzylic nitriles, are formed exclusively under phosphine ligand-free conditions. Mechanistic studies reveal that isonitrile is the primary product under both conditions, but it is isomerized into nitrile in the absence of ancillary phosphine ligands.

Abstract
The metal-free-catalyzed synthesis of allyl nitriles from Csp2-Csp3 coupling between olefins and azobis was carried out. Key on this work was that the synthesis of allyl nitriles directly using olefin as a starting material was considered to be more efficient and economical than the alkyne, alkynyl carboxylic acid, or cinnamic acid used in previous works. Moreover, in this reaction, iodine served as the sole promoter, azobis served as a cyanation reagent, and N2 was the only nontoxic byproduct that could avoid the utilization of metal catalysts and virulent nitrile reagents and generation of toxic wastes. With an optimum condition in hand, more than 30 examples of desired products including aromatic and aliphatic nitriles have been synthesized in good to excellent yields. Based on control experiments and literature data, a plausible mechanism of cyanation was proposed.

Abstract
Secondary carbocations are rarely observed spectrometrically for prolonged durations at ambient temperatures because of their instability. In this study, when 4,4'-difluorobenzhydrol (1) was mixed with H-mordenite (H-Mor), the 4,4'-difluorodiphenylmethyl cation (2) was generated as the main product, identified by UV-vis and 13C-MAS NMR spectroscopies, and was preserved for over 1 week at ambient temperature. Surprisingly, the polymerization and disproportionation of 1 barely proceeded within the micropores of H-Mor. However, these side reactions prevailed in TfOH and formation of 2 was not observed. Preservation of other secondary carbocations from benzhydrol, 4,4'-dichlorobenzhydrol, and 9-fluorenol was also realized in H-Mor. It was confirmed that the generation of 2 from 1 was controlled by thermodynamic equilibrium rather than kinetic regulations. The equilibrium between 2 and 1 was accompanied by reversible chromism, which could be easily controlled by altering the moisture content in H-Mor. Moreover, novel insights into specific acid catalysis in zeolites densely populated with acid sites on the inner surface of micropores are described herein.
