Abstract
Catalytic conversion of cellulose into the novel platform molecule 2,5-hexanedione (HXD) is regarded as one feasible approach for high-value utilization of biomass resources. Here, we reported one efficient way of one-pot conversion of cellulose into HXD with high yield of 80.3% in H2O and tetrahydrofuran (THF) mixture within Al2(SO4)3 combined with Pd/C as a catalyst. In the catalytic reaction system, Al2(SO4)3 could catalyze the conversion of cellulose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and Pd/C combined with Al2(SO4)3 could catalyze the hydrogenolysis of HMF into furanic intermediates such as 5-methylfurfuryl alcohol and 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) without causing over-hydrogenation of these furanic intermediates. These furanic intermediates were finally transformed into HXD catalyzed by Al2(SO4)3. Besides, the H2O/THF ratio could significantly influence the reactivity of the hydrolytic furanic ring-opening of the furanic intermediates. The catalytic system also showed excellent performance on the conversion of other carbohydrates (glucose and sucrose) into HXD.

Abstract
5-Hydroxymethylfufural (HMF) is an intriguing platform molecule that can be obtained from biomasses and that can lead to the production of a wide range of products, intermediates, or monomers. The presence of different moieties in HMF (hydroxy, aldehyde, furan ring) allows to carry out different transformations such as selective oxidations and hydrogenations, reductive aminations, etherifications, decarbonylations, and acetalizations. This is a great chance in a biorefinery perspective but requires the development of active and highly selective catalysts. In this view, homogeneous catalysis can lead to efficient conversion of HMF at mild reaction conditions. This Review discussed the recent achievements in homogeneous catalysts development and application to HMF transformations. The effects of metal nature, ligands, solvents, and reaction conditions were reported and critically reviewed. Current issues and future chances have been presented to drive future studies toward more efficient and scalable processes.

Abstract
The hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has been carried out either under single (aqueous) phase or batch multiphase (MP) conditions using mutually immiscible aqueous/hydrocarbon phases, 5 % Ru/C as a catalyst, and both with and without the use of trioctylmethyl phosphonium bis-(trifluoro methane) sulfonimide ([P8881 ][NTf2 ]) as an ionic liquid (IL). Alternatively, the hydrogenation of HMF was explored in the continuous-flow (CF) mode with the same catalyst. By changing reaction parameters, experiments were optimized towards the formation of three products: 2,5-bis(hydroxy methyl)furan (BHMF), 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF), and 1-hydroxyhexane-2,5-dione (HHD), which were obtained in up to 92, 90, and 99 % selectivity, respectively, at quantitative conversion. In particular, the single (aqueous) phase reaction of HMF (0.2 m) carried out for 18 h at 60 °C under 30 bar of H2 , allowed the exclusive synthesis of BHMF from the partial (carbonyl) hydrogenation of HMF, while the MP reaction run at a higher T and p (100 °C and 50 bar) proved excellent to achieve only HHD derived from a sequence of hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis. It is worth noting that under MP conditions, the catalyst was perfectly segregated in the IL, where it could be recycled without any leaching in the aqueous/hydrocarbon phases. Finally, the hydrogenation of HMF was explored in a H-Cube® flow reactor in the presence of different solvents, such as ethyl acetate, tetrahydrofuran, and ethanol. At 100 °C, 50 bar H2 , and a flow rate of 0.1 mL min-1 , the process was optimized towards the formation of the full hydrogenation product BHMTHF. Ethyl acetate proved the best solvent.

Abstract
The depletion of fossil resources is driving the research towards alternative renewable ones. Under this perspective, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) represents a key molecule deriving from biomass characterized by remarkable potential as platform chemical. In this work, for the first time, the hydrogenation of HMF in ethanol was selectively addressed towards 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) or 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF) by properly tuning the reaction conditions in the presence of the same commercial catalyst (Ru/C), reaching the highest yields of 80 and 93 mol%, respectively. These diols represent not only interesting monomers but strategic precursors for two scarcely investigated ethoxylated biofuels, 2,5-bis(ethoxymethyl)furan (BEMF) and 2,5-bis(ethoxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BEMTHF). Therefore, the etherification with ethanol of pure BHMF and BHMTHF and of crude BHMF, as obtained from hydrogenation step, substrates scarcely investigated in the literature, was performed with several commercial heterogeneous acid catalysts. Among them, the zeolite HZSM-5 (Si/Al=25) was the most promising system, achieving the highest BEMF yield of 74 mol%. In particular, for the first time, the synthesis of the fully hydrogenated diether BEMTHF was thoroughly studied, and a novel cascade process for the tailored conversion of HMF to the diethyl ethers BEMF and BEMTHF was proposed.

Abstract
2-Hexanol (2-HOL) is a versatile biomass-derived platform molecule for synthesis of liquid transportation fuels, lubricants, or detergents. Herein, a one-step preparation of 2-HOL using 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) as a substrate was reported for the first time. Several Au-based catalysts supported on different metal oxides were prepared to explore the relationship between carrier and catalytic activity. The results showed that the highest 2-HOL yield of 65.8 % was obtained at complete HMF conversion over the 5 %Au/ZrO2 catalyst. The 5 %Au/ZrO2 catalyst exhibited excellent durability after five consecutive recycling runs, while confirming its remarkable ring-opening hydrogenolysis on other biomass-derived furanics, furfural, with a total yield of 1-pentanol and 2-pentanol of 67.4 %. The distinguished ring-opening hydrogenolysis performance of the Au/ZrO2 catalyst originated from a synergistic effect between the interfacial Au-O-Zr oxygen vacancies-induced Lewis acidic sites (activating C-OH/C=O bonds) and metallic Au (activating H2 ). This work provides a possibility for producing 2-HOL from HMF with high yield, expanding the sustainable application of lignocellulosic biomass.

Abstract
The development of efficient biomass valorization is imperative for the future sustainable production of chemicals and fuels. Particularly, the last decade has witnessed the development of a plethora of effective and selective transformations of bio-based furanics using homogeneous organometallic catalysis under mild conditions. In this review, we describe some of the advances regarding the conversion of target furanics into value chemicals, monomers for high-performance polymers and materials, and pharmaceutical key intermediates using homogeneous catalysis. Finally, the incorporation of furanic skeletons into complex chemical architectures by multifunctionalization routes is also described.

Abstract
The development of sustainable energy solutions that reduce global carbon emissions, while maintaining high living standards, is one of the grand challenges of the current century. Transportation fuels are critical to economic development, globalization, and the advancement of society. Although ground vehicles and small aircraft are beginning a slow transition toward electric propulsion with energy sourced from solar radiation or wind, the extreme power requirements of jet aircraft require a more concentrated source of energy that is conveniently provided by liquid hydrocarbon fuels. This Review describes recent efforts to develop efficient routes for the conversion of crude biomass sources (e. g., lignocellulose) to cycloalkanes. These cycloalkanes impart advantageous properties to jet fuels, including increased density, higher volumetric heat of combustion, and enhanced operability. The combination of bio-based cycloalkanes and synthetic paraffinic kerosenes allows for the preparation of 100 % bio-based fuels that can outperform conventional petroleum-based fuels. In this Review methods are described that convert biomass-derived small molecules, including furfural, furfuryl alcohol, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, cyclic ketones, phenolics, acyclic ketones, cyclic alcohols, furans, esters, and alkenes to high-density cycloalkanes. In addition to describing the chemical transformations and catalysts that have been developed to efficiently produce various cycloalkanes, this Review includes summaries of key fuel properties, which highlight the ability to generate fuels with customized performance metrics. This work is intended to inspire other researchers to study the conversion of sustainable feedstocks to full-performance aviation fuels. An acceleration of this research is critical to reducing the carbon footprint of commercial and military aviation on a timescale that will help blunt the impacts of global warming.

Abstract
Recent decades have been marked by enormous progress in the field of synthesis and chemistry of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF), an important platform chemical widely recognized as the "sleeping giant" of sustainable chemistry. This multifunctional furanic compound is viewed as a strong link for the transition from the current fossil-based industry to a sustainable one. However, the low chemical stability of HMF significantly undermines its synthetic potential. A possible solution to this problem is synthetic diversification of HMF by modifying it into more stable multifunctional building blocks for further synthetic purposes.

Abstract
The development of a simple and durable catalytic system for the production of chemicals from a high concentration of a substrate is important for biomass conversion. In this manuscript, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was converted to 1-hydroxy-2,5-hexanedione (HHD) using the combination of commercial Pd/C and acetic acid (AcOH) in water. The influence of temperature, H2 pressure, reaction time, catalyst amount and the concentration of AcOH and HMF on this transformation was investigated. A 68% yield of HHD was able to be obtained from HMF at a 13.6 wt% aqueous solution with a 98% conversion of HMF. The resinification of intermediates on the catalyst was characterized to be the main reason for the deactivation of Pd/C. The reusability of the used Pd/C was studied to find that most of the activity could be recovered by being washed in hot tetrahydrofuran.

Abstract
The limits to the supply of fossil resources and their ever increasing use forces us to think about future scenarios for fuels and chemicals. The platform chemical 5-hydroxymethyl-furfural (HMF) can be obtained from biomass in good yield and has the potential to be converted in just a few steps into a multitude of interesting products. Over the last 20 years, the conversion of HMF to 1-hydroxyhexane-2,5-dione (HHD) has been studied by several groups. It is possible to convert HMF into HHD by hydrogenation/hydrolytic ring opening reaction in aqueous phase using various heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts. This review addresses both the state of the art of HHD synthesis, including mechanistic aspects of its formation, as well as the recent progress in the application of HHD as a building block for many useful chemicals including pyrroles, cyclopentanone derivatives and triols.

Abstract
A series of cationic half-sandwich cyclopentadienyl-ruthenium(II)-pyridylamine complexes, [(η5-C5H5)Ru(κ2-L)(PPh3)]+ (L = Namine-substituted pyridylamine ligands) ([Ru]-1-[Ru]-6), along with the analogous cyclopentadienyl-ruthenium(II)- N-isopropylpyridylimine complex [(η5-C5H5)Ru(κ2-L)(PPh3)]+ (L = N-isopropylpyridylimine) ([Ru]-7), have been synthesized in good yields. Structural identities of all the complexes have been authenticated by 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR, mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography. The synthesized complexes exhibited high catalytic activity for the transformation of the bio-derived furans, 2-furfural (furfural), 5-methyl-2-furfural (5-MF), and 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural (5-HMF) to levulinic acid (LA) and the diketones, 3-hydroxyhexane-2,5-dione (3-HHD), 1-hydroxyhexane-2,5-dione (1-HHD), and hexane-2,5-dione (HD) in water. Efficient transformation of furfural to LA over a range of η5-Cp-Ru-pyridylamine complexes is substantially affected by the Namine-substituents, where a η5-Cp-Ru- N-propylpyridylamine complex ([Ru]-2) exhibited higher catalytic activity in comparison to other η5-Cp-Ru-pyridylamine and η5-Cp-Ru-pyridylimine complexes. The relative catalytic activity of the studied complexes demonstrated a substantial structure-activity relationship which is governed by the basicity of Namine, steric hindrance at Namine, and the hemilabile nature of the coordinated pyridylamine ligands.

Abstract
A series of renewable C9 -C12 triketones with repeating [COCH2 CH2 ] units were synthesized in high carbon yields (ca. 90 %) by the aqueous-phase hydrogenation of the aldol-condensation products of 5-hydroxylmethylfurfural (HMF) and ketones over an Au/TiO2 catalyst. Compared with the reported routes, this new route has many advantages such as being environmentally friendly, having fewer steps, using a cheaper and reusable catalyst, etc. The triketones as obtained can be used as feedstocks in the production of conducting or semi-conducting polymers. Through a solvent-free intramolecular aldol condensation over solid-base catalysts, the triketones were selectively converted to diketones, which can be used as intermediates in the synthesis of useful chemicals or polymers. As another application, the tri- and diketones can also be utilized as precursors for the synthesis of jet-fuel range branched cycloalkanes with low freezing points (224-248 K) and high densities (ca. 0.81 g mL-1 ).

Abstract
We report the synthesis of bis(hydroxylmethylfurfuryl)amine (BHMFA) from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) by reacting 5-HMF with primary amines in the presence of homogeneous Ru(II) catalysts having sterically strained ligands. BHMFA is a group of furan-based monomers that offer great potential to form functional biopolymers with tunable properties. A range of primary amines, such as aliphatic and benzyl amines, are readily converted with 5-HMF to form the corresponding BHMFA in good yields. The reaction proceeds through reductive amination of 5-HMF with primary amine to form secondary amine, followed by reductive amination of 5-HMF with in situ generated secondary amine to produce BHMFA.

Abstract
The highly selective hydrogenation/hydrolytic ring-opening reaction of 5-hydroxymethylfuraldehyde (5-HMF) was catalyzed by homogeneous Cp*Ir(III) half-sandwich complexes to produce 1-hydroxy-2,5-hexanedione (HHD). Adjustment of pH was found to regulate the distribution of products and reaction selectivity, and full conversion of 5-HMF to HHD with 99 % selectivity was achieved at pH 2.5. A mechanistic study revealed that the hydrolysis/ring-opening reaction of 2,5-bis-(hydroxymethyl)furan is the important intermediate reaction step. In addition, an isolated yield of 85 % for HHD was obtained in a 10 g-scale experiment, and the reaction with fructose as the starting material also led to a 98 % GC yield (71.9 % to fructose) of HHD owing to the excellent tolerance of the catalyst under acidic conditions.
