On the Electronic Structure of H−Ng−Ng−F (Ng = Ar, Kr, Xe) and the Nonlinear Optical Properties of HXe2F

OBCN isomerization and noble gas insertion compounds of identical valence electron number species: stability and bonding

A series of new noble gas (Ng) insertion compounds of the general type XNgX, XNgY and XNgY+ has been theoretically studied using ab initio and DFT methods herein. We first studied the isomerization process of the OBCN compound, and then investigated the bonding properties and stability of the compounds formed by inserting Ng into the single bond of the three low energy isomers by high-level ab initio calculations. The OBNgCN compounds are thermochemically stable with respect to all dissociation channels except for the processes of releasing OBCN/OBNC and free Ng. Furthermore, the two dissociation processes OBNgCN → Ng + OBNC and OBNgNC → Ng + OBCN are kinetically prohibited by the relatively high free energy barrier ranging from 22.7 to 31.7 kcal mol-1 except for the OBKrCN and OBKrNC analogues. And the adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP) analysis indicated that chemical bonding in OBNgCN compounds is realized via a delocalized 3-center 2-electron (3c-2e) σ-bond in the B-Ng-C moiety and a totally delocalized 5-center 2-electron (5c-2e) σ-bond in the whole O-B-Ng-C-N. Natural bond orbital (NBO) theory, atoms-in-molecules (AIM) and energy decomposition analysis (EDA) based on the molecular wavefunction revealed that the B-Ng bond and Ng-C bond have some covalent character in OBNgCN. In addition, the calculation and detailed bonding analysis on a large number of neutral and monocationic compounds with identical valence electron numbers to OBNgCN demonstrate that the two bonds directly linked to the Ng atoms have covalent properties in neutral compounds, whereas Ng forms one typical covalent bond and one partial covalent and partial ionic bond with the neighboring atoms in the monocationic compounds.

Second hyperpolarizability of multimetallocenes [Cp–Mn–Cp] of Be, Mg and Ca

Multimetallocene complexes ( Cp – M n– Cp ) of Be , Mg and Ca have been considered for the theoretical study of static second hyperpolarizability using a number of DFT functionals. Owing to the cooperative effect in bonding, beryllium forms multiberyllocene complexes ( Cp – Be n– Cp ) which have sufficient thermal stability with respect to dissociation into neutral fragments up to n = 10. On the other hand, multimetallocene complexes of Mg and Ca are found to be stable for n ≤ 5 which may be due to the weaker covalent bonding interaction between the larger metal atoms. The rather small variation of linear and cubic polarizabilities of Cp – Be n– Cp complexes beyond n = 5 arises from the rather weaker charge transfer transitions. The difference in NLO property among the investigated metal complexes arises from the extent of charge transfer from the terminal metal atoms and the distance between them. The charge transfer at longer distances in the ground state of Mg and Ca complexes leads to more intense electronic transition — the spectroscopic parameters of which strongly favors the enhancement of second hyperpolarizability.

Third-order NLO property of beryllium-pyridyne complexes

Six pyridyne isomers and their complexes with beryllium have been considered for the theoretical study of the third-order polarizability. The NLO properties are calculated by employing the DFT functionals BLYP, B3LYP, BHHLYP, B3PW91, BP86 and B2PLYP for the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. The C - Be bond length in the complexes varies within 1.644 Å–1.771 Å indicating covalent interactions between the metal and pyridynes. The present investigation reveals that the magnitude of second-hyperpolarizability of pyridynes strongly enhances upon complex formation with beryllium. The maximum hyperpolarizability has been predicted for the 2,5-diberyllium pyridine complex. The lowest value of hyperpolarizability is obtained for the 2,3- and 3,4-diberyllium pyridine complexes. The chosen DFT methods predict almost identical pattern of variation of NLO property. The variation of second-hyperpolarizability has been satisfactorily explained by the excitation energy and transition dipole moment associated with the most dominant excited state.

A theoretical study of stabilities, reactivities and bonding properties of XKrOH (X = F, Cl, Br and I) as potential new krypton compounds using coupled cluster, MP2 and DFT calculations

DFT andAb initiocalculations were employed to disclose the conceivable existence of new noble gas molecules, XKrOH.

Beryllium-cyclobutadiene multidecker inverse sandwiches: electronic structure and second-hyperpolarizability

Beryllium forms stable sandwich and inverse sandwich complexes with the cyclobutadiene molecule. Two types of multidecker complexes are designed. Multidecker inverse sandwiches are found to be thermally more stable than the corresponding sandwich complexes. The average distance between two consecutive metals and the two consecutive cyclobutadiene rings increase gradually on increasing size of the chosen inverse sandwich complexes. The density functional theory functionals B3LYP, BHHLYP, BLYP, M06, CAM-B3LYP, and B2PLYP in conjunction with the 6-311++G (d, p) basis set have been employed for calculating the third-order electric response properties of the chosen beryllium-cyclobutadiene complexes and the results obtained for each functional are found to have a consistent trend. Compared to the normal sandwich compounds the second-hyperpolarizability of inverse sandwiches is predicated to be larger, which fairly correlates with the extent of ground-state polarization. The significant enhancement of cubic polarizability of higher-order multidecker inverse sandwiches arises from the strong coupling between the ground and the low lying charge transfer excited states. The rather strong enhancement of second-hyperpolarizability on increasing size of the beryllium-multidecker inverse sandwiches may provide a new route to design efficient nonlinear optical materials.

On the vibrational linear and nonlinear optical properties of compounds involving noble gas atoms: HXeOXeH, HXeOXeF, and FXeOXeF

The vibrational (hyper)polarizabilities of some selected Xe derivatives are studied in the context of Bishop-Kirtman perturbation theory (BKPT) and numerical finite field methodology. It was found that for this set of rare gas compounds, the static vibrational properties are quite large, in comparison to the corresponding electronic ones, especially those of the second hyperpolarizability. This also holds for the dc-Pockels β(-ω;ω,0), Kerr γ(-ω;ω,0,0) and electric field second harmonic generation γ (-2ω;ω,ω,0) effects, although the computed nuclear relaxation (nr) vibrational contributions are smaller in magnitude than the static ones. HXeOXeH was used to study the effects of electron correlation, basis set, and geometry. Geometry effects were found to lead to noticeable changes of the vibrational and electronic second hyperpolarizability. A limited study of the effect of Xe insertion to the nr vibrational properties is also reported. Assessment of the results revealed that Xe insertion has a remarkable effect on the nr (hyper)polarizabilities. In terms of the BKPT, this is associated with a remarkable increase of the electrical and mechanical anharmonicity terms. The latter is consistent with the anharmonic character of several vibrational modes reported for rare gas compounds.

Neutral noble gas compounds exhibiting a Xe-Xe bond: structure, stability and bonding situation

The structure and stability towards decomposition of eight novel noble gas compounds having a Xe-Xe bond, which have not been experimentally observed so far, have been studied computationally. In addition, the nature of the Xe-Xe interaction has been analysed by a combination of the most popular methods to study the bonding situation of molecules, i.e. Natural Bond Orbital, Atom in Molecules and Energy Decomposition Analysis methods. Two related series of compounds have been considered: HXeXeX (X = F to I) and RXeXeR' (R = halogen atom). Our calculations indicate that the replacement of the fluorine atom by a heavier group 17 congener in the HXeXeX series leads to a less stable compound, thus making more difficult its experimental observation. The same effect occurs in the RXeXeR' series, but these species are more kinetically protected against the decomposition reaction and therefore, their experimental detection is more likely.

Structural Characteristics and Large Non-Linear Optical Responses of New Alkaline Earth-Based Alkalides

A series of M2+(H5Aza222)–M′– (M = Be, Mg, Ca; M′ = Li, Na, K) alkalides that contain alkaline earth metal cations complexed by the H5Aza222– cage have been investigated using the CAM-B3LYP method. These alkaline earth-based alkalides not only present unusual structural features but also exhibit extraordinarily large static first hyperpolarizabilities (β0) up to 1.98 × 105 au. By comparing the β0 values among alkalides with various complexants, the Aza222 cage is found to be preferable to the previously investigated calix[4]pyrrole and n6adamanzane (n = 2, 3) complexants in enhancing the first hyperpolarizabilities of alkalides. In addition, the relationships between the β0 values of M2+(H5Aza222)–M′– and the atomic number of the M′– anion, the atomic number of the M2+ cation, and the M–M′ distance are explored.

On the stability, electronic structure, and nonlinear optical properties of HXeOXeF and FXeOXeF

The electronic ground state, stability, and linear and nonlinear optical properties of HXeOXeF and FXeOXeF have been studied theoretically by employing complete active space valence bond (CASVB), multistate complete active space perturbation theory (MS-CASPT2), and coupled cluster methods. It is shown that the oxygen inserted between the two Xe atoms significantly modifies the ground-state electronic configuration of the formed derivative by increasing the closed-shell contribution (σ(2)) and removing the diradicaloid character observed in HXe(2)F. The electronic charge distribution has been analyzed by employing the atoms-in-molecules (AIM) method. The dissociation channels of HXeOXeF and FXeOXeF have been studied in detail. It was found that these compounds are metastable, protected by substantial energy barriers and, thus, they can be prepared under appropriate conditions. Both two- and three-body dissociation reactions have been considered. The effects of inserting O in HXe(2)F and substituting H (HXeOXeF) by F, leading to FXeOXeF, on the energy barriers are discussed. The significant effects of the inserted oxygen on the polarizability and even more on the first hyperpolarizability have been computed and rationalized.
