Electron Attachment to Diselenides Revisited: Se–Se Bond Cleavage Is Neither Adiabatic nor the Most Favorable Process

Addition-Elimination or Nucleophilic Substitution? Understanding the Energy Profiles for the Reaction of Chalcogenolates with Dichalcogenides

We have quantum chemically explored the mechanism of the substitution reaction between CH3X(-) and the homo- and heterodichalcogenides CH3X'X″CH3 (X, X', X″ = S, Se, Te) using relativistic density functional theory at ZORA-OLYP/TZ2P and COSMO for simulating the effect of aqueous solvation. In the gas phase, all substitution reactions proceed via a triple-well addition-elimination mechanism that involves a stable three-center intermediate. Aqueous solvation, in some cases, switches the character of the mechanism to double-well SN2 in which the stable three-center intermediate has become a labile transition state. We rationalize reactivity trends and some puzzling aspects of these elementary reactions, in particular, vanishing activation energies and ghost three-center intermediates, using the activation strain model (ASM).

Electron capture by the thiyl radical and disulfide bond: ligand effects on the reduction potential

The effect of non-polar and polar ligands and of monovalent cations on the one-electron reduction potential of the thiyl radical and the disulfide bond was evaluated. The reduction potentials E° for the CH3S(.)-nL/CH3S(-)-nL and CH3SSCH3-L/CH3SSCH3(.-)-L redox couples were calculated at the B3LYP, M06-2X and MP2 levels of theory, with n=1, 2 and L=CH4, C2H4, H2O, CH3OH, NH3, CH3COOH, CH3CONH2, NH4(+), Na(+), K(+) and Li(+). Non-polar ligands decrease the E° value of the thiyl radical and disulfide bond, while neutral polar ligands favour electron uptake. Charged polar ligands and cations favour electron capture by the thiyl radical while disfavouring electron uptake by the disulfide bond. Thus, the same type of ligand can have a different effect on E° depending on the redox couple. Therefore, properties of an isolated ligand cannot uniquely determine E°. The ligand effects on E° are discussed in terms of the vertical electron affinity and reorganization energy, as well as molecular orbital theory. For a given redox couple, the ligand type influences the nature of the anion formed upon electron capture and the corresponding reorganization process towards the reduced geometry.

Electron capture dissociation of disulfide, sulfur-selenium, and diselenide bound peptides

To examine the electron capture dissociation (ECD) behavior of disulfide (S-S), sulfur-selenium (S-Se), and diselenide (Se-Se) bonds-containing peptides, a series of free cysteine (Cys) and selenocysteine (Sec) containing peptides were reacted to form interchain S-S, S-Se, and Se-Se bonds, and then studied using ECD with Fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometry (FTICR MS). These results demonstrate that the radical has higher tendency to stay at selenium rather than sulfur after the cleavage of Se-S bonds by ECD. In addition, -SH (-33), -S (-32), and -S + H (-31) small neutral losses were all observed from the cleavage of C-S bonds of a disulfide bound peptide. Similar, but minor, fragments were also detected in S-Se bound peptides. In contrast, the cleavage of C-Se bonds of the Se-Se species mainly forms fragments with neutral loss of -Se + H (-78.90868), and the radical tends to stay on the selenium of its corresponding complementary pair. Although the electron affinities of S atom (2.07 eV) and Se atom (2.02 eV) are very close; they have very different reactivity towards electrons. The replacement of sulfur with selenium greatly increases the electron affinities of S-Se and Se-Se bonds comparing to S-S bonds (with an increase of electron affinity by about 0.20 eV by replacing a sulfur with a selenium) (Int J Quantum Chem 110:513-523, 2010), which in turn leads to different ECD fragmentation behavior and mechanisms. Our results are in good agreement with previously published ab initio calculations on Se-Se compounds by other groups.
