Revisiting H2O Nucleation around Au+ and Hg2+: The Peculiar "Pseudo-Soft" Character of the Gold Cation

Coordination of Mercury(II) in Water Promoted over Hydrolysis in Solvated Clusters [Hg(H2O)1-6](aq)2+: Insights from Relativistic Effects and Free Energy Analysis

Understanding the nature of the interaction between mercury(II) ions, Hg2+, and water molecules is crucial to describe the stability and chemical behavior of structures formed during solvation, as well as the conditions that favor the Hg2+ coordination or inducing water hydrolysis. In our study, we explored exhaustively the potential energy surface of Hg2+ with up to six water molecules. We analyzed electronic and Gibbs free energies, binding, and nuclear magnetic resonance parameters. We used the zeroth-order regular approximation Hamiltonian, including scalar and spin-orbit relativistic corrections for free energy calculations and geometry optimizations to explore the interplay between electron correlation and relativistic effects. We analyzed intermolecular interactions with energy decomposition analysis, quantum theory of atoms in molecules, and natural bond orbital. Additionally, we used the four-component Dirac Hamiltonian to compute solvent effect on the magnetic shielding and J-coupling constants. Our results revealed that the water hydrolysis by Hg2+ requires a minimum of three water molecules. We found that the interaction between Hg2+ and water molecules is an orbital interaction due to relativistic effects and the most stable structures are opened-shape clusters, reducing the number of oxygen-mercury contacts and maximizing the formation of hydrogen bonds among water molecules. In these types of clusters, Hg2+ promotes the water hydrolysis over coordination with oxygen atoms. However, when we considered the change associated with the transfer of a cluster from the ideal gas to a solvated system, our solvation free energy analysis revealed that closed-shape clusters are more favorable, maximizing the number of oxygen-mercury contacts and reducing the formation of hydrogen bonds among water molecules. This finding suggests that, under room conditions, the coordination of Hg2+ is more favorable than hydrolysis. Our results have significant implications for understanding Hg2+ behavior in water, helping to develop targeted strategies for mercury remediation and management, and contributing to advancements in the broader field of environmental chemistry.

Metal Ionization in Sub-atmospheric Pressure MALDI Interface: A New Tool for Mass Spectrometry of Volatile Organic Compounds

A novel approach for the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) based on chemical ionization by Au⁺ ions has been proposed. The ionization is carried out in a commercially available dual sub-atmospheric pressure MALDI/ESI interface without any modifications. The Au⁺ ions are generated by laser ablation of a gold nanolayer with the MALDI laser, and VOCs are infused via the ESI capillary. The ultrahigh resolving power and sub-ppm mass accuracy of the employed mass spectrometer allow straightforward identification of the formed ion-molecule complexes and other products of Au⁺ interactions with VOCs in the gas phase. The performance of the technique is demonstrated on the analysis of various classes of organic molecules, namely, alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, aromatic compounds, carboxylic acids, ethers, or organosulfur compounds, expanding the portfolio of currently available methods for the analysis of VOCs such as secondary electrospray ionization, proton-transfer reaction, and selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry.

Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Investigation of the Electronic and Structural Stability of Anionic O2-(H2O)n, n = 1-16 Clusters

We report an ab initio molecular dynamics investigation of the electronic and structural stability of water molecules binding to a nucleation O₂^- particle, O₂^-(H₂O)_n with n = 1-16, to ascertain the factors that create particularly stable species. Our results compare well with previous experimental and theoretical reports for clusters with less water content, find three new geometries for species with 7, 9, and 10 water molecules, and determine that 8, 11, 13, and 15 water molecules form remarkably stable structures around O₂^-. These special clusters correspond to well-defined compact structures formed by cubes and four-member rings made of water's hydrogen bonds interacting with a negative kernel formed by O₂^- with five water molecules, O₂^-(H₂O)₅, in which the negative charge is localized in the first four water molecules, while the fifth molecule provides geometrical stability. We assess the clusters' energetic stability based on dissociation energies, analyze electron detachment energies to understand its geometrical evolution, and investigate its charge distribution based upon isosurfaces of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO). This research can help provide theoretical insight into the starting steps of nucleation of water clusters around ionic particles.

Noncovalent interactions determine the conformation of aurophilic complexes with 2-mercapto-4-methyl-5-thiazoleacetic acid ligands

The synthesis of three new gold(i) salts is reported. The intermolecular interactions stabilizing the aurophilic dimers are examined by several first principles interpretative techniques.
